Human Kinetics recognizes that health education may be challenging to fit into your busy schedule. That is why we developed the World of Wellness Health Education series (WOW!):

• With WOW! you can deliver top-quality health education within the limited hours of the school day, promote health literacy, help meet the mandates of No Child Left Behind legislation, and enhance your efforts to achieve the objectives of the overall school curriculum that you work so hard to implement.

• WOW! is designed to develop strong and compelling links between what students should know and what they should be able to do in the areas of reading and writing.

• With multicultural sidebars and its diverse cast of characters, WOW! embraces ethnic and cultural diversity.

• Finally—but no less importantly—WOW! emphasizes the importance of physical activity and nutrition throughout the health education strands.

Through careful design and execution, a coordinated approach, and consideration for real students and teachers in real school settings, WOW! not only helps you meet the challenge, but does so in a way that appeals to kids of all ages.

Meet the Challenge of ComprehensiveHealth Education in Elementary School

Fun. Easy. Complete. The World of Wellness Health Education series enables you to teach your students the importance of leading an active and healthy life through conceptually grounded, context-based lessons. What’s even more exciting is that while your students are learning, they’ll become acquainted with a very special group of friends who will take them on a wellness journey throughout the school year. Ruby, Cody, T.J., Sydney, and others will help your students learn about health while strengthening their abilities in reading, writing, and other cross-curricular topics.

WOW! functions as a group of kits—without the cost of kits! Ancillaries other publishers might make you pay extra for are included with the teacher’s guides for each level of the WOW! series

at a very affordable price. Plus, few supplies are need for delivering the dynamic lessons found in WOW!, and the few little things you might need for activities or demonstrations are inexpensive and easily found in a school or discount store. That means that you can deliver WOW! content expertly, smoothly, and affordably with very little prep time!

Introducing Cody, Ruby, Sydney, and T.J.

These images, and the others throughout the brochure, are found in the WOW! student texts.

Today’s child needs an updated, multifaceted approach in order to achieve health literacy, or the ability to make choices that will enhance personal health and well-being now and in the future. For many years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have promoted the key to children’s health and well-being through their Coordinated School Health Model. This model encompasses eight interactive areas:

1. Health education2. Physical education3. Health services4. Nutrition services5. Counseling, psychological, and social

services6. Healthy school environment7. Health promotion for staff 8. Family and community involvement

WOW! Delivers Coordinated School HealthWith concern rapidly growing about childhood obesity, inactivity, and other health risks such as type 2 diabetes, states and municipalities are now responding by passing laws requiring coordinated school health. The WOW! Health Education series meets these needs by providing the four components that are most frequently required:

1. Health education core content meeting the relevant national standards

2. Physical education helping students meet the national standards

3. Parent involvement newsletters provided per unit and per grade level, in both English and Spanish 4. Nutrition education and services for students and parents alike.

Professional development opportunities are available through the authors to support each essential component.

This Is How WOW! Works

Each level of The World of Wellness Health Education series consists of the following:

• a teacher’s guide• a teacher’s resource CD-ROM• a student book (available in paperback

and hardback) that corresponds to the students’ levels

For kindergarten students, the student book is a big book, a large colorful book for the teacher to read to the group; first- through fifth-grade students have their own books. In addition, an abridged first-grade student book is available in big book format.

Color CodingAcross the series, kindergarten through fifth grade, WOW! uses a color-coded system to denote grade levels. This allows you the additional flexibility of using a lower level to meet the needs of students with academic challenges or a higher level to challenge gifted students.

In today’s world of tight budgets and increasing demands on school resources, rest assured that the WOW! student books are not intended to be used as workbooks. Rather, they include extra heavy paper and are meant to last multiple years while still being cost-effective. This complies with the directives of most school districts not to purchase student consumables.

WOW! offers flexibility and easily adapts to your students’ levels.

WOW! Student Books Make Reading Fun! Your students will be introduced to an entire school year of health and wellness education topics while taking a memorable journey with Ruby, T.J., Cody, Sydney, and others. The student books present the information in a story format that keeps kids interested.

The WOW! series offers flexibility through its student books. Material from the student book can be read out loud in a large group, independently by each student, or in small groups or learning teams.

Each level of the student book is divided into six units that correspond with the lesson plans and background information from the teacher’s guide (see pages 8–11). The book is further broken down into 36 lessons. The class reads each numbered lesson before you introduce the matching lesson from the teacher’s guide.

Reading to Learn Lesson by LessonThe lessons in the student book introduce the material in an engaging story format that promotes reading skills while piquing students’ interest. Throughout the student books your students will also find sidebars with factual and fun information. These pieces of information enhance the story and can usually be used as part of the lessons. The number and variety of sidebars increase with each grade level. Together, these sidebars enhance the overall depth of the series and make learning more fun and interesting for both reluctant and enthusiastic learners.

Nature fact sidebars relate to the story line and provide solid connections to the elementary science curriculum.

Health sidebars, some including kid-friendly medical art, are based on the content background in the teacher’s guide and can be used for teaching specific health facts.

Physical activity sidebars are placed throughout the student books to enhance the kinesthetic elements in the series.

Riddles appear as humorous additions to the story text.

Multicultural sidebars embrace ethnic diversity and are interesting and informative observations about diverse cultures that are relevant to the lesson.

Substance Abuse Prevention education is also included.

WOW! Optional Teaching Materials Help You Customize Delivery to Meet Local Mandates

The WOW! Health Education series has several options to make it easy for you to tailor teaching materials to your local mandates and needs. Foremost, the main lesson content teaches the topics thoroughly and accurately without touching on potentially controversial topics. The teacher’s guides include a separate Optional Materials section for those districts and schools who wish to share more information about

• growth and development, • body systems, • health promotion, • disease prevention related to HIV and AIDS, • sexuality education, and • substance abuse prevention.

Optional Materials by GradeKindergarten Through Third Grade: Optional Health Connections

These materials are provided in teacher’s guides only, under the Optional Materials tab. They briefly outline additional related comments that could be made in addition to the main lesson. For example, in lesson 23 of the yellow level (second grade), Germs, Germs, Germs, the optional materials provide the following additional comment:

You may wish to add a comment such as, “Knowing how to avoid spreading germs [pathogens] is the beginning of learning how to prevent more serious illnesses such as HIV and AIDS.”

Fourth and Fifth Grade Optional Components

The fourth and fifth grade teacher’s guides include these components:• Complete discussion guides with booklets of optional student information and simple but accurate

medical art• Additional optional background information for teachers

Only the fifth grade teacher’s guide includes these components:• Complete lesson plans and reproducible text (which does not appear in the student book). These additional

pages have the same characters as in the fifth grade student book with black-and-white art for easy photocopying.• Sexuality education in an easy-to-use discussion guide format (fifth grade teacher’s guide only).

NO optional topics are mentioned in the student books or big books, and the optional topics can easily be removed from the printed teacher’s guides without damaging them.

WOW! covers sensitive topics in a way that is• customizable,• thorough, • accurate,• age appropriate, and• straightforward.

No optional material is included or cross-referenced in the student books, and the optional student materials allow district or school administrators to easily keep or remove printed optional materials before distributing the series.
