Introduction This distance learning programme is based on the wide experience in on-site academic education provided by 13 editions of the Master’s Degree in Health Economics and Health Care Management given at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), which in its early years was taught in conjunction with the University of Barcelona. This inter- national distance learning programme also takes advan- tage of the experience provided by the various editions of the Spanish online course taught since 2002. The materials for the distance modules have been pre- pared by researchers of renowned international prestige working at the UPF Research Centre on Economics and Health (CRES) and teaching staff of the Department of Economics and Business and the Department of Health Sciences of Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain), together with other collaborators, all with proven academic and professional experience. The content of the various courses combines the explanation of the me- thodological foundations with the use of the instruments, based on the publications of the faculty and collaborators and the discussion of case studies taken from the specia- lised literature. UPF and the Continuing Education Institute (IDEC) of Pompeu Fabra University provide all the necessary infor- mation technology infrastructure and other resources for the smooth running of the course. The UPF The UPF (Pompeu Fabra University) is a young public uni-versity, born on 1990, that is innovative and seeks excellen-ce. These objectives are reflected in the model of its studies, the use of advanced technology, and a special attention to students and other members of the university community. Pompeu Fabra was the first Spanish university to structure the academic year in three-months terms and required an intensive dedication of its students. The syllabuses place great importance on practice. The University is also innovative with respect to its model of geographical location. Placed in the heart of Barcelona, the university and the city interrelate with and enhance one another. The Department of Economics and Business of Pompeu Fabra University has been quoted by The Wall Street Jo-urnal (WSJ) as being one of the top centres in economics in Europe.

ObjectivesTo provide specialised training in the economics and management of health services and pharmaceutical products (Health Economics and Pharmacoecono-mics).

The concept of management in the health sector and the pharmaceutical sector is understood in the broadest sense of the term and includes public sector services, centres and services belonging to health care institutions at any level of care, pharmaceutical service providers, agencies for the evaluation of drugs and medical technologies, together with the pharmaceuti-cal industry, pharmaceutical distributors, insurance companies and consultancy and advisory firms.

The programme is of special relevance for professio-nals and graduates related to the health sector who are interested in the issues of health economics, phar-macoeconomics, and the design and management of quality programmes.

The programme is aimed especially at these graduates and health sector professionals, and offers an acade-mic training with a high reputation on the market.Participants are not required to have previous knowledge of economics.

This International Master’s Degree in Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics meets the needs and requirements both of experienced professionals and of recent graduates who wish to increase their knowledge of these areas.

The programme is addressed to professionals who, wherever in the world they live, wish to follow a dis-tance course with the characteristics we have outlined above. It is conducted entirely online, and at no time it is necessary to attend face-to-face sessions. The international edition of this programme is conducted entirely in English.

To date, the Spanish and the International edition of this online training programme has been followed by over 500 participants in several European, African, Asian and Latin-American countries.

MethodologyThe course will be taught entirely online, in distance format. This involves a specific teaching methodology, with intensive use of the virtual classroom and appro-priate evaluation mechanisms.

The virtual classroom where the course will be taught is based on the following elements: All the documents used will be available throughout the course in the form of web pages that can be consulted on the Inter-net. Participants will also be able to download the print version of the content of the teaching units. In this way, they will be able to do most of the course work off-line if they wish.

Communication between teachers and participants will be based on debates and the private course e-mail. The teaching method used during the course will be based on case studies and participation in discussion forums. All the topics in the programme will feature a number of tests consisting of self-assessed multiple-choice questions.

The Continuing Education Institute (IDEC)IDEC (Continuing Education Institute), a private founda-tion which was the result of the commitment towards con-tinuing education on the part of Pompeu Fabra University and a group of leading companies and institutions, was founded in 1993, with a global vocation and local roots. IDEC acts as a link between the Pompeu Fabra Univer-sity and society and is instrumental in relations with the world of business, professionals and society in the field of specialisation, updating of knowledge and professional re-cycling. In line with UPF’s own objectives as a public university in terms of teaching and research, IDEC offers lifetime training services in accordance with social needs in the required form, place and time.

Research Centre on Economics and Health (CRES-UPF)The Research Centre on Economics and Health (CRES) is a research centre of Pompeu Fabra University officially founded on July 1996.Born with a strong academic research interest, CRES objectives are focused on the analysis of the health care system, today being a key reference for research and tea-ching on health economics and health care management in Spain and internationally. CRES is created with an strong multidisciplinary vocation. It’s for that reason that CRES members are professors either from the Department of Economics and Business or the Department of Experimental, Health and Technolo-gical Sciences Department. Moreover, all of them with a significant experience (both in research and teaching) in the distinct Health Economics and Management fields.

The international projection of CRES has led its members to participate in several networks (such as Bertelsmann Foundation network or the Basket Network within the VIth European Comission Research Program), to be awar-ded with the Merck Foundation grant and to host the 5th International Health Economics Association Conference (IHEA).

Introduction

This distance learning programme is based on the wide experience in on-site academic education provided by 13 editions of the Master’s Degree in Health Economics and Health Care Management given at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), which in its early years was taught in conjunction with the University of Barcelona. This inter-national distance learning programme also takes advan-tage of the experience provided by the various editions of the Spanish online course taught since 2002.

The materials for the distance modules have been pre-pared by researchers of renowned international prestige working at the UPF Research Centre on Economics and Health (CRES) and teaching staff of the Department of Economics and Business and the Department of Health Sciences of Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain), together with other collaborators, all with proven academic and professional experience. The content of the various courses combines the explanation of the me-thodological foundations with the use of the instruments, based on the publications of the faculty and collaborators and the discussion of case studies taken from the specia-lised literature.

UPF and the Continuing Education Institute (IDEC) of Pompeu Fabra University provide all the necessary infor-mation technology infrastructure and other resources for the smooth running of the course. Taking advantage of the new possibilities offered by the information technologies, this course will be taught entirely online, combining the use of web technology, hypertexts and e-mail to allow continual teacher/participant and participant/teacher interaction.
