He is the scientific principal investigator of the joint NIDA/FDA Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, a nationally representative longitudinal study of more than 40,000 persons age 12+ to assess and inform FDA tobacco policy regulations. Neighbors focuses on the social and motiva-tional influences in the etiology, prevention and treatment of health and risk behaviors. He has applied his research toward better under-standing and alleviating problems related to alcohol and substance abuse, intimate partner violence, problem gambling, body image and eating disorders, and aggressive driving. Support for this research has been provided by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Mental Health, and the Department of Defense and the National Center for Responsible Gaming.

Improving the Quality of Addiction Treatment through Payment Strategies

Horgan’s work is focused on how alcohol, drug and mental health services are financed, organized and delivered in the public and private sectors and what approaches can be used to improve the quality and effectiveness of the delivery system. She leads the Brandeis/Harvard Center to Improve System Perfor-mance of Substance Use Disorder Treatment funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and has led studies for organizations including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institutes of Health (NIMH, NIAAA and NIDA), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, state gov-ernments and foundations, including Robert Wood Johnson.

Dating it Safe: Longitudinal Study of the Risk and Protective Factors of Dat-ing Violence (and the Necessary Evil of Conducting School-Based Research)

Jeff Temple, PhDAssociate ProfessorDirector of Behavioral Health and Research, Department of Obstet-rics & Gynecology University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

Temple’s research focuses on interpersonal relationships, with a particular focus on teen dating violence. His research has been fund-ed through the National Institute of Justice, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. He has nearly 100 schol-arly publications in a variety of high-impact journals including JAMA, JAMA Pediatrics, Journal of Youth and Adolescence, Pediatrics, and the Journal of Adolescent Health. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Primary Prevention, and is on the editorial boards of five other scientific journals.

RIA’s annual Seminar Series brings to Buffalo national experts in the fields of alcohol, drugs and related issues to present research results to policymakers, clinicians, other researchers, students and the general public.

Fall seminars will take place at 10 a.m. on the dates noted, in room 132 of RIA. They are free and open to the public.
