SISTER’S CORNERSISTER’S CORNER

Are you Making Progress…

in your life, either at work, at home, and in your Spiritual life?

“ His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness. For this very rea-son, make every effort to add to your faith goodness.” 2 Peter 1: 3 and 5

Christians, too have a way to measure their progress, or growth. God wants to see his children grow to be more like Jesus, and who among us does not want to have the characteristics of Je-sus increasingly evident in our lives?

Many things our day to day life is done by habit from the time we get up till we go to bed. Also we can get into the habit of taking a few minutes to pray for a short time daily. Turn off or unplug your phone, or other items for five minutes and just have silence in your life.

St. Peter writes that we should make every effort to “add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge and to knowledge, self-control, and to self-control, perseverance, and to perseverance. Godliness, and to godliness, mutual affection, and to mutual affection, love.”

In your effort to increase and grow in the love of your God, one needs to take time in your daily life to spend five minutes of time in prayer, and see if you can increase it from time to time. Don’t used the excuse that you are too busy. By getting in the habit of spending a few quiet minutes each day, you will feel that God provides much more. He “has given us every-thing we need for life and godliness. The Apostle Paul writes, “ God is at work within you, helping you want to obey him and then helping you do what he wants.” (Philippians 2:13)

Father, thank you for providing everything we need to grow spiritually, as well as profes-sionally . Forgive us for too often being satisfied with the status quo, or measuring ourselves by others. Amen.

Your Chaplain, Sister Mary Agnes Pastoral Care Department

Compliance and Ethics

•Another way of making sure St. Aloisius Medical Center does business in a legal and ethical manner.

–CMS says we must comply with federal regulations regarding fraud, abuse and waste.

–Must not bill for services not rendered.

–Need to follow rules and regulations regarding ethical and pa-tient centered care.

–SAMC follows the Catholic Healthcare Directives.

If you see something that doesn’t look right, email Marian at [email protected] or call 701.399.9486. You can also write a note, seal it in an envelope and put it in Marian’s mailbox in the Administrative Secretary’s (Nancy’s) office.

Read your Employee Handbook—lots of information on Compli-ance and Ethics, expected employee behavior is in there!

Fire Safety

Responding to a fire alarm—do not call the switchboard to find out where the fire is. Wait for the announcement!

The switchboard person is busy figuring out where the “fire” is, and cannot take time away from the job of announcing the alarm to answer the phone.

The fire alarm is sounding—go to your safe place and wait for the announcement, sign the form.

Formation Minute

You will never appreciate enough the happiness of having your own chapel.” -Mother Ste. Therese de Jesus (SMP History, Vol. 1)

As SMP Health System, we often refer to our work as “fulfilling the healing mission of Jesus.” It is for this reason that we consider our work to be more than just a job—it’s a ministry. Further-more, we extend the use of the term ministry beyond what we do to where we do it. We refer to our facilities as “ministries.” By doing this, we understand not only the work we do as sacred, but also the place where this work takes place as sacred. When we fulfill the healing mission of Je-sus, we make Him present in a real way. This meeting of the human and divine is what makes our work sacred and where this takes place is then a sacred space. While all of this is true, there is also the reality that some moments and places are more sacred than others, even within our ministries. Take for example a room where a patient or resident is dying. Death is a significant moment in everyone’s life, and as such has a very spiritual and sa-cred character. And this sacredness is something that, I think, we all naturally understand. We conduct ourselves in a different way when we’re around someone who is dying—we speak softly and walk quietly. We even have special rooms in some of our ministries to accommodate the sa-credness of this time. In our ministries, there is also another way in which the human and divine meet, outside of the work that we do. In each of our ministries we have a chapel—a sacred space set aside specifically for worshiping and encountering God. As a Catholic ministry, we also believe that in our chap-els, Jesus lives in a unique way in the Blessed Sacrament contained within the tabernacle (the lit-tle, gold box with a red candle near it). This adds a certain concreteness to our understanding of our chapels as places where we meet God. Just as we conduct ourselves differently in other areas of heightened spiritual significance, we ought to conduct ourselves accordingly when in our chapels. For Catholics, this means genu-flecting when crossing in front of the tabernacle; and for all of us, it means keeping idle chatter to a minimum, and when we do speak, using a lower voice. This holds true anytime one is in the chapel area regardless of whether a service is being conducted or not, because, as stated earlier, the sacredness of this space has to do with God’s presence, not what is happening. (If your par-ticular ministry has a chapel which is attached to a multi-purpose room, this holds true for the entire space when the chapel area is not partitioned off.) We are privileged to be able to bring Christ’s healing to others in our ministries, and as we daily go about doing this, perhaps we might take time to acknowledge God’s presence both in what we do, as well as in a particular way in our sacred spaces.
