SHARING THE DETAIL AND THE BIGGER PICTURE WITH OUR COMMUNITY

Last year’s Sixth Form and Year 11 students proved that hard work pays off by achieving an excellent set of outcomes in their final examinations. At a time when the government are bringing more rigour to the examination system, we are delighted to report our continuing trend of improving results. Huw Christianson with his A grade in Computer Science alongside B grades in Maths and Physics will be off to York University to read Computer Sciences.

Rebecca Turnbull who achieved A in Creative Writing, and B grades in Spanish and Psychology, will now be going to Leicester University to study Languages.

I always feel a little guilty singling out specific students for notice as it’s not all about achieving the highest grades. We are just as proud of those students whose grades may be lower but who have triumphed over adversity of one kind or another in the run up to their exams. So well done to absolutely everyone who sat their exams this summer and good luck in whatever the next stage of your careers may be whether that is at Sir Frederic Osborn or beyond! Finally can I thank all parents for sending our students back looking so smart? With very few exceptions, our young people are looking exceptionally well turned out for the start of this new academic year and we absolutely appreciate all your support with this. Do enjoy this edition of Insight and please enjoy all the photos of the students on results day.

We want your child’s life to be a success! We do not want your child to fail! We are sure that as a parent you want exactly the same things for your child. How can we work together and make it happen? Children should come to school every day. Our

school’s attendance target is 96% but children should always aim for 100%

We WANT children to learn so that they have the opportunity to go to college or university, take up an apprenticeship/training and find a good job.

If your child is not in school, missing odd days he/she is falling behind and it’s harder to catch up with school work.

If your child is genuinely ill please provide the school with a note so that the absence can be authorised. Please ensure you ring the school in the morning to inform us of the absence.

Please try wherever possible to book medical appointments outside of school hours. If the appointment has to be during the school day please send your child to school before and after the appointment where possible.

If you are having problems getting your child to school please talk to us.

If your child takes one day off every week, at the end of the school year it will give a total of nearly 8 weeks off school!

Alongside attendance is punctuality. It is imperative that your child is punctual to school. Registration in the morning is 8.30am therefore your child needs to be lined up outside their Form Room at 8.30am and not arriving to school at this time. The back gate will be locked at 8.30am every morning; if your child uses this entrance please ensure that they leave for school in plenty of time so they arrive before the gates are locked.

Welcome back! I would firstly like to welcome all of our students back after you have hopefully had a brilliant summer holidays and a well deserved break. Of course a new academic year means a new Year 7 group joining us. A huge welcome to all our new students, now a week into their new school, and we must say you have made a brilliant choice with the school you have chosen to attend for at least the next 5 years. The Leadership Academy will be working closely with Year 7 students this year. We are linked strongly with the PE department and collate the PE department’s extra curricular clubs lists. We urge all students to make the most of the vast and wonderful opportunities that are given to them. This is just one of the tasks the leadership academy has to help ease Year 7 into their new school to make it the best experience possible. Introducing the Leadership Academy The Leadership Academy, now in its third year provides leadership opportunities to Year 8 students all the way up to Sixth Form, whether that is representing Sir Frederic Osborn School as a Sports Ambassador or a Sports Leader. Sports Ambassadors complete a two year course in which they participate in two Young Ambassador Days, of leadership training. The Ambassadors start this process in Year 9 through to Year 10 and are then able to pick up the opportunity if and when they join Sixth Form. Year 9 Silver Sports Ambassadors work in Primary Schools leading sports sessions and sports days. Year 10 Gold Sports Ambassadors focus on in-school leadership, leading clubs and assisting with the Year 9 Silver Ambassadors as well as Young Ambassador Day. Students will meet our Gold Ambassadors when leading clubs, assemblies and on posters around the school. Sports Leaders also help with sports sessions and sports days, with the Ambassadors supporting them throughout. The Academy aims to give all students a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities which serves as a fantastic respite from, day to day lessons. This includes an extensive range of extra curricular clubs offering, leadership opportunities and representing Sir Frederic Osborn School as a team.

I, Regan Carolan, oversee leadership in our school, including our School Games Mark, Young Ambassador Day, leader progress, team management and much more. I aim to be a ‘friendly face’ around the school which students can look up to. Our key motto is ‘Champions of Change.’ We aim to change and improve leadership and teams within our school, which has seen a vast improvement since forming. Not to mention, making an incredible public image for the school while at events. Meet the Year 10 Gold Ambassadors

Sir Frederic Osborn School Awarded The Gold School Games Mark 2016/2017 We are delighted to announce that Sir Frederic Osborn School, have achieved the Gold School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year. A significant improvement from 2013 when we were awarded the Bronze, to Silver in 2016 and then to Gold in 2017. Showing momentous development and proving we are #championsofchange. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
