WELCOME BACK TO TERM 3 It seems a little belated that I am welcoming every- one back when you will receive this in week 4. We have had a fast paced term so far and the end will be upon us before we know it. A spe- cial welcome to the new students who have joined us this term and their families and I hope you will settle in well and take the opportunity to par- ticipate in all the school has to offer. STAFF We welcomed our new male GAP staff, Sullivan Beamish, Jaron Furhmann, Thorben Hasse and Bastian Baetge, to the school and they have already as- sisted in all the athletics carnivals. Congratulations to Karen and David Storey on the birth of her daughter Phoebe, a little sister for Mason and to Mr and Mrs Shannon Lee on their wedding. GROUNDS UPDATE At the end of last term, I men- tioned some of the projects we hoped to complete over the break. Despite the rain, we did manage to install air conditioners in the music room and internet into Halse Hall. Exterior painting was commenced in Junior School with the roof areas to be completed at a later date. Some less than glam- ourous work in the kitchen replac- ing the grease trap was also com- pleted. The visit by the air condi- tioning engineer took place and he is preparing his report for us regarding air conditioning dorms. Mattingley Park was levelled which will assist drainage and has had irrigation installed. There was some unexpected entertainment when a blow out in the fire hy- drant provided a giant water fea- ture which extended above Mr Riddle’s house. Congratulations to Karen and David Storey on the birth of her daughter Phoebe, a little sister for Mason and to Mr and Mrs Shannon Lee on their wedding.

GROUNDS UPDATE At the end of last term, I men-tioned some of the projects we hoped to complete over the break. Despite the rain, we did manage to install air conditioners in the music room and internet into Halse Hall. Our Cattle Club students with some of their winnings from the Charters Towers Show. This year they were awarded ‘BEST OVERALL SCHOOL’.

Many thanks to Lionel Hartig (Left) and Glenysis Stralow (Right) for all the hard work you put into our students.

Rockhampton for Confraternity Football and QISSN Netball, sailing from Airlie Beach to Cairns on a tall ship, in the UK studying at Oxford University and closer to home, at-tending careers camp at James Cook University. The students con-ducted themselves in an exemplary manner and were a credit to them-selves and the school. I will not “steal their thunder” with my own report but will let them report back on their exploits. A big thank you to those staff that helped organise these events and to the staff, parents and past students for their support of the students.

TERM DATES 2017 Please find a copy of the 2017 term dates on Page 14 of this edition of Phoenix Rising. ATHLETICS CARNIVALS I really enjoyed watching the stu-dents compete in the Inter-House Athletics Carnival on the 27th and 28th of July. Students were very en-couraging of each other and there was plenty of friendly rivalry. Con-gratulations to the age champions and runners up and to the winning Houses.

Thank you to the members of the P & F for catering, the grounds staff for their tireless work in preparing for the carnival and the staff for as-sisting on the day. A huge amount of work goes into the organisation of the event and then co-ordinating the days so that everything runs seamlessly. From the whole school community, we thank Miss Pia Tay-lor and Miss Natasha Meyer for their work preparing and co-ordinating the days.

We now move into training for the Inter-School Carnivals that are com-ing up in the next few weeks.

CHARTERS TOWERS SHOW The school had a strong presence at the Show again this year in a range of areas such as cattle showing, equestrian, choirs and bands, Junior School display and entries in the art/craft and cooking judging. Con-gratulations to the students involved

and thank you to the staff that of-fered their support and assistance.

FROM FROMELLES TO POZIERES-WE REMEMBER During the last weeks in July, our nation remembered those who served the country 100 years ago in the battle of Fromelles. We just cannot comprehend over 5000 cas-ualties in a single night of fighting. I was very pleased to receive this link from Mrs Clayton, a Gabes Past Student and President of the Bris-bane Old Girls Association, to a speech delivered by Dr Brendan Nelson, the Director of the Australi-

an War Memorial, at the National Press Club.

I encourage all to take the time to listen to the speech, especially those who are travelling to Europe next year.

FORMAL Events such as the Formal provide an opportunity to see our young men and women all dressed up in their finery. I trust everyone had an enjoyable night mixing with the seniors from the other schools. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank Columba Catholic College for organising and hosting the event and thank our own staff for attending. Darren Fleming Headmaster

Sam Kelly On the downhill run now. This is a busy term (again) for the School – as I write this we are in week 3 and in the last week we have had: Maths Competition Science Competition Inter-House Athletics The Charters Towers Show Gold and Silver Duke of Edin-

burgh Combined Schools Formal These are only the “big ticket” events. There are plenty more, such as Debating and Less Talk More Art. This shows how dedicat-ed our staff are in providing a range of opportunities for students. I would also like to thank the par-ent helpers that support our pro-grams. Parent-Teacher interviews are al-ways a great time to catch up to discuss students. As I have always said, communication is the key to a successful partnership in schooling. I trust that all parents have sat down with their children to view their report cards, praise the posi-tives and set goals for Term 3. Should you believe that there is an error on your child’s report, please contact me to discuss and we will investigate and issue a new report, should this be required. I have also been viewing the report data. As is tradition, at the beginning of each

Semester, we celebrate success through the Headmaster’s List and the Academic Achievement listing. On the flipside to this, I start to meet with students that are expe-riencing difficulties. Year 12 are my priority during the first week with regards to strategies to support them to achieve their potential. I have already had some discussions with parents regarding support. A reminder that we do not give end of Term 3 reports. The next “report” that the Year 12’s receive will be their Senior Statement is-sued by the QCAA. There are ap-proximately 14 weeks left until Speech Day and Valedictory Dinner and there is a lot between now and then e.g. QCS test, more as-sessments, QTAC applications, job applications. Staff are aware that now is the time to give extra sup-port to students. However, if you feel that your son/daughter needs extra or there is something that we are not aware of, please do not hesitate to either e-mail or pick up the phone. Sometimes a minute on the phone saves a week of frustra-tion. Talking about Speech Day and awards nights. We have two days of formally celebrating success – Preliminary Prize Giving and Speech Day. Speech Day is held on the last day for the Year 12s. This year it is on Friday the 18th of No-vember at the World Theatre at 10am. More details about the lo-gistics will be forthcoming, but es-

sentially that day we celebrate ac-ademically the top student in each subject in Senior and the top stu-dent overall in each year level (Dux). We also have special awards e.g. Scholarships, most in-volved Year 7 boarder, and, of course, major sporting awards e.g. Pierre deCoubertin. The Day generally concludes at about 12.30pm with the P & F tra-ditionally providing refreshments at Henry’s after the event. The Preliminary Prize giving is tra-ditionally done the afternoon be-fore (Thursday the 17th of No-vember at about 1pm) and we cel-ebrate success by acknowledging excellence in academics e.g. VHA’s in subjects, sporting e.g. best players, most improved, and our special acknowledgements e.g. VET certificates. On the 2017 Europe trip front (no pun intended), participants start to research their fallen this week. If students do not have a family member that has fallen overseas, an Australian fallen from a north-ern region will be selected. Foot-age from 2013 and 2015 trips will be available on USB for past stu-dents during the reunion week-end. I am at the stage of request-ing specific permission from past participants. Thank you for your continued sup-port.

Dean of School

Ian Dietrich A Busy Beginning The first three weeks of this term have come and gone in a flurry of activity. Week one included students again descending upon the campus eager to share stories of their holi-days with each other, and of course begin all of the classwork and activ-ities of the term. Students have since been involved in a range of activities (proudly displayed on our Facebook page and no doubt show-cased in this publication). Activities have included students in Years 9 & 10 enjoying a visit to the Dalrymple Trade Training Centre Careers and

PAGE 4 ISSUE NO 10/2016 5 AUGUST 2016

Opportunities Day; completion of the rain delayed Inter-House Ath-letics Carnival; the second last In-ter-School Debating Round for the season; completion of the Australi-an Mathematics Competition; Year 10 students completing a ‘Superfly Filming Workshop’; students in Years 11 & 12 enjoying the glitz and glamour of the Combined Schools Senior Formal; Cattle Club, Horse Club, Music and Visual Art students successfully representing the School at the Charters Towers Show; Gold and Silver Duke of Ed-inburgh International Award candi-dates completing a Cycling Expedi-tion; Sporting and Cultural Photos; and a small number of Year 10 stu-dents attending the NQ Maths Camp on Magnetic Island this

weekend! Wow – how did we pack it all in? On that very topic; this term is full of events taking students and staff out of normal curriculum time. The events are valuable for a full and round education of the mind, body and spirit; however, we need to be cautious. I am very aware that the loss of school curriculum time, and the disruption to out of school hours with events, does mean that it is hard for students (and staff) to get into a productive study routine. We all need to mindful to use valuable classroom and prep time effectively so that the pressure is not so great when we reach the ‘pointy-end’ of the term.

HEADMASTER’S LIST – RESULTS FROM SEMESTER 1, 2016

The following students have been successful in gaining a place on the Headmaster’s List. The criteria were that the successful students in Semester One, 2016 Reports must receive Effort Ratings of 1

in at least half of their subjects and no Effort Rating of more than a 2.

Page 5: Headmaster Contents - All Souls St Gabriels School · 2016-08-29 · & F for catering, the grounds staff for their tireless work in preparing for the carnival and the staff for as-sisting

Uniforms A document listing PE and Khaki uniform days for secondary stu-dents has been produced and dis-tributed. Tutor Teachers are using this document to monitor the wear-ing of the correct uniform on the correct day (according to a regular timetable). Again, with all of the events taking place so far this term, it has been difficult to get into rou-tine in this area. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appre-ciated. If you would like a copy of the Senior School Uniform Days’ document to post on the fridge, please ring or email the school. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Tutor Teacher should you need clarification of any uni-form requirements.

Parent Contact It was pleasing to see a number of parents take the opportunity to meet with their children’s teachers at the Parent-Teacher Interviews on Travel Day. By the end of the week, you should have received contact from each of your child’s teachers (either via email or phone call) to update you with what is happening in their classes this term. You can also check their assessment re-quirements for the term on the as-sessment schedules on the ASSG website, or received via email. Please do not hesitate to contact your children’s teachers should you have any queries regarding content or their progress in any subject. A list of teacher email addresses ap-pears below. For those planning to make it to the Inter-School Athletics Carnival (Thursday and Friday, 18 and 19 August, hosted by BTC), I wish you safe travels. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment on these days and will miss witnessing the great spirit and successes of our team. I look forward to catching up with many of you at one of the other school events in the coming months. Enjoy the term.

Dean of Students

Shannon Lee Welcome back, it is only week three but it feels like we’ve had a term’s worth of events already. I trust you had an enjoyable break, I know I did, probably the best break ever! Miss Pimm and I got married. The day was perfect, Bec and I would like to thank eve-ryone in the school community of for their support and best-wishes. I’ve also included a couple of pho-tos of the day.

Duke of Edinburgh – Year 10 At the end of last term I was lucky enough to go on the DoE expedi-tion to Lake Tinaroo with the Year 10 students. I have to congratu-late all the students who were in-volved, it was great to see stu-dents challenge themselves both individually and as a team. I was really pleased with the mature ap-proach shown by most, it was an enjoyable way to finish the term. Long Tan Thank you to all the students who took the time to submit an appli-cation. The recipients of these awards will be announced at Speech Day.

Cattle Club Congratulations to all the students who were involved with Cattle Club at the show. Max Alling-ham, Logan Guldbransen and I went along to support. It was the first time I have ever witnessed any type of competition like this. Fortunately for Logan and I, Max was able to talk us through each of the events and what we should be looking for. A special mention to Lionel, Ceelena Lawrence and Matthew Finger who do a fantastic job of leading this group. To all the students who were in-volved congratulations you did yourself and the school proud. Student Voice During week four there will be an opportunity for all secondary stu-dents and some of the older jun-ior students to be involved in gathering important information about the school from a student’s perspective. This information will be used in the next phase of our strategic planning process. I would like to thank those who have volunteered their time to be involved. Especially the Year 12 students who will be conducting the student interviews. I look for-ward to analysing the data gath-ered. It is exciting to think the in-formation gathered from students will help shape the future of the school.

Br Nathan-James SSF Confirmation Reminder A reminder that Confirmation prep-aration will take place this semester for those wanting to be Confirmed in Term 4. Please leave your name with Flo email me: [email protected] AAFC Junior General Service Training (JGST) Camp During the Term 2 holidays nine of our students, along with students from BTC and CCC, attended the AAFC Junior General Service Train-ing (JGST) Camp in Townsville for a week. They joined nearly 200 Ca-dets from across North Queens-land. The JGST Camp is for Cadets in their first year of service. The aim of the camp is to give Cadets an introduction to Service life. This is an opportunity for them to expe-rience living and working on a De-fence establishment.

During the week Cadets participat-ed in a number of activities de-signed to get them up close and personal with a range of working units within the ADF. Cadets stayed at Lavarack Army Barracks where they had to learn to adapt to the routines of Service life and work as a member of a team. During the day Cadets visited a number of units and squadrons on both Lava-rack Barracks and RAAF Townsville. The visits included demonstrations by the Military Working Dogs, Fire Fighters, Board of Meteorology and Security Forces. Cadets were able to climb on and through Defence vehicles and aircraft including Land Rovers, trucks, retrieval vehicles, a

PAGE 6 ISSUE NO 10/2016 5 AUGUST 2016

MH70 helicopter and a visiting PC-3 Orion. They were also given oppor-tunity to handle (not fire) some of the weapons currently used in De-fence. There were visits to muse-ums including collections by Austral-ia’s famous 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Cadets were given an introduction to Firearm’s Safety and got to try their hand at a .22 LR Bruno Rifle and an intro-ductory aircraft flight. All was not just being the tourist. Cadets were expected to conduct themselves in the manner reflective of the ADF. This meant preparing rooms to inspection standard, eat-ing appropriately in the Mess, prac-tising and perfecting their Drill and Ceremonial and following the orders and instructions of senior cadets and adult staff. The week concluded with the Cadets all participating in a Passing Out Parade attended by over 250 parents, siblings and friends. From all reports our Cadets (students) enjoyed the experience and many are looking forward to a two week GST camp over the Term 3 – 4 holidays which will see them stay, and experience life, in RAAF Richmond and RAAF Williamtown (NSW) and the Defence Establish-ment in Fairburn (ACT) which con-cluded with a National Parade and Dinner at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Anyone interested in joining the Air Force Cadets is encouraged to speak with me; we have limited va-cancies opening up for our second semester recruit intake.

Z-Club Report

Zoe Godfrey Secretary

Last term our St Gabes Z-Club took on the project of creating pamper packs for women struggling in the drought. This has been hugely successful so far, all thanks to our Z-Club teachers and to Gayleen Lawrence, who con-ducted all the organising and preparation of the pamper packs. A very spe-cial thanks is also owed to all of the Z-Club members who gave up their time to help us all sort through each and every pamper pack, examining them to check that nothing had leaked, cleaning them all out and then put-ting them back together and writing out inspirational notes and cards.

This term the club has hit the ground running, as our first meeting took place in the second week and we were happily greeted by a special visit from Jeanie Brooks and Bernie Taylor, who are ambassadors for Uniting Care. They gave us a quick briefing about the kind of work they conduct and how that relates to us. We were also delighted to know that our pam-per packs were being put to good use, as Jeanie and Bernie were taking them out to the Hughenden and the Ewan School of Distance Education Outreach’s to be given to all the parents and guardians suffering from drought.

We need Underpants This term our sole focus will be on ‘Days for Girls’ and after a refreshing holiday all of our Z-Club members are keen for a new challenge, a new term and a new project. Follow this link to see what is involved http://www.daysforgirls.org/

Our aim is to make these for the 165 girls at the Knapor Junior High School where our Cambodia Service Project is based. If you are able to buy packs of size 6 – 8 underpants that are brightly coloured (but no animal patterns) t h i s

JCU Uni Experience Over the holidays, 2 Year 11 students and 9 Year 12 students chose to attend the JCU Uni Experience from Mon 11th to Wed 13th July. All found the experience worthwhile. The days were spent learning about the different courses each could study and the evenings spent enjoying Townsville activities and John Flynn Residential College. Darren and Wendy Fleming gave up three days of their holiday to accompany the students, for which I and the students that went are very, very grateful! This is what some of the students had to say about the experience…

Jacob Logan – I got a lot out of the experience. I pretty much de-cided what I wanted to do, which has inspired me to study harder and brought my goals into realisation. The college experience showed me the fun side of uni as we had a great time with our friends.

Teana Rafter – The uni experience gave me an outlook on what I’d like to do. It was so worthwhile and I learnt many new things about courses and life at uni. It showed me uni can be fun with all the night time activities. Aby Phillipson – The experience was definitely worthwhile. It gave me a real insight into what it is going to be like at uni. The lecturers and student ambassadors made sure you knew what you were in for. It was good that we could follow our own interests and I made new friends from other schools. The residential college was really good, with the rooms set out well and the food was awesome. I loved bowling and laser tag too. Katie Core – I thought that getting a feel for what the lectures and the teachers would be like the most worthwhile. I like that we got to do practical activities related to each of the courses which made it more interesting. I also realised that staying at a residential college will be very different to being a boarder. Breanna Kent – I found it worthwhile because of the variety of courses to choose from which broadened my perspective and has helped me decide on my career. I’d be the first in my family to at-tend uni and it was great to learn you can have fun as well as study, and that residential college would be a great way to make friends when first starting at uni. Courtney Teece – I now have some goals for courses I’d like to study. I enjoyed meeting people from other schools and exploring the whole campus. It really showed me there is a fun side to uni and residential college life would be great. Rhys Donaldson – I am clearer about what I’d like to study because we got to see lectures and find out more about the different courses, including the practical side like seeing the things they make in electrical engineering. The social side was good too! Liam Durrington – I liked it because they told you all you need to know to do that course. While it was educa-tional, most activities were fun as well. I totally love the idea of staying on college!

DTTC Careers Expo Both Year 9 and 10 students attended the DTTC Career Expo last week. As Jake Wilson from Year 9 reported, “I was pleased to learn more infor-mation about potential careers, found the people very helpful and support-ive of my decisions.” The students also had fun with the variety of activi-ties available. A big thank you from all those who attended to Jacq Baum-garten, the Centre Manager at the Dalrymple Trade Training Centre, who made sure there were so many exhibitors for the students to learn from.

Natasha Meyer Acting Sports Co-ordinator

Welcome back to Term 3. It is already shaping up to be a very hectic term and the boy’s Tennis and girl’s Softball season is still 3 weeks away. I am sure you have read elsewhere in the Phoenix about the success of our Confrater-nity Netball and Rugby League teams so I won’t waste paper providing a second recount. I would like, however, to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the students and coaching staff who travelled away to the Confra-ternity carnivals as ultimately they get 5 days of glory for a year (or in many cases, 2 or 3) of training, hard work and preparation, the vast majority of which happens outside School hours. So, to all students in the Confraternity Netball and Rugby League teams and the staff who have been responsible for their success, Congratulations on a job very well done!

The annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival was post-poned from Week 1 due to weather but went ahead in Week 2; taking advantage of some glorious weather. Under near perfect conditions the carnival quickly proved it would be an amazing day. Congratulations to all the students who attended competed and broke personal best records on the day. A lot of time and effort goes into the smooth running of an Athletics Carnival. Thank you very much to all our staff who ran their events efficiently and effectively, allowing students the opportunity to compete and also to spectators who were involved in making the carnival one of wonderful sportsmanship and athletic excellence.

The Spirit of the Carnival Award is an inaugural award that was introduced at this year’s carnival. This honour was and will be honoured to an athlete who may not necessarily be the strongest, fittest or fastest on the day. But ra-ther they display a level of commitment towards their house and encompass the essence of participation and hav-ing a go and giving it your all. The 2016 Spirit of the Carnival award was presented to Rachel Hall for her tremen-dous efforts over the two days and the way in which she always competed with a smile. Confraternity Netball ReportConfraternity Netball Report

Kiara Henry-Nash - Captain

While everyone was enjoying their first week of holidays our 1st Net-ball Team were travelling down to Rockhampton to participate in the QISSN Carnival for 2016.

The whole team was excited and a bit nervous for the coming week of hard netball. To start off our journey, we all got out of bed and hit the road to Rockhampton at 5:30 in the morning. Everyone seemed to have slept most the way down, but in between sleeping and food breaks, we had some entertaining sing offs along the way.

Once we arrived in Rockhampton we checked in and got ourselves settled into our rooms. To have a bit of fun, we were off to join the boys at dinner. After enjoying our meals and getting to meet some of the Past Students of All Souls, we were ready to get back to our motel and get some sleep.

After a bit of a sleep in on Sunday, we got prepared for one last training session. The training session involved a lot of running and a lot of falling over, but after the hard work was done we were ready to hit the markets and do a bit of shop-ping. After the shopping, everyone went back and had a bit of down time before we headed off to The Cathedral College for the Opening Ceremony. Even on holidays we still got to participate in a Chapel Service which was interesting for eve-ryone. After the Opening Ceremony had concluded, we headed back and waited for Georgie and Dianne to cook us din-ner. Everyone seemed to enjoy their chicken stir-fry. Once dinner was over, everyone went back to their rooms to get pre-pared for the next day.

Monday was an early wake up with us having to play 4 games for the day. Our first game was against Marist College. Our first quarter came and we were not ready for the game that was happening. After having a team talk and everyone wak-ing up, we came back in the second only losing by 5 points. Our next game was against St. Andrews. Winning our first game for the week by 3 points gave us a bit of confidence. After our first win, the girls were ready to play Holy Spirit next, with the game being a tight hard fought contest. We came away with a 2 point loss. Everyone was looking forward to our last game for the day, with Souls having a great win; 27 to 4 against Saint Mary’s Catholic College. After day 1 of netball was done, the girls were looking forward to dinner and bed, with Sarah and Danielle cooking some great spaghet-ti.

With another early morning on Tuesday, the girls were excited to get to the courts. After having 3 games of netball, we came away winning all 3 games against St Augustine, St Mary’s College and St Joseph. These games were hard fought wins and the girls were happy to be in the second day of the carnival, having won 4 games. Once netball was over, every-one was eager to get back for taco Tuesday made by Breanne and Jacklenn, before heading off to see Finding Dory. Find-ing Dory was the highlight of our week, with some big fans being Tayla Davidson, Danielle Milton and Sarah Santo, all wearing Finding Dory tights. They sure did get a lot of attention. Once the movie was over it was time to get back to the motel to discuss our tactics for the finals coming up.

We woke up the next morning, after enjoying a nice sleep in and pancakes for breakfast. After breakfast, we all got ready to hit the shops with the trend being socks and sandals. After a long day of shopping and spending all our money, we were ready to get back and eat some yummy chicken carbonara made by Hollie and Kiara. After dinner, everyone headed to bed excited to head into the semi-finals the next morning, with the team moving up a division.

It was semi-finals day, with us having to play 2 games. Our first game was against Chanel College. This was a hard close game right down to the very end, with an unfortunate loss by only 1 goal. We were excited to have our Rugby League boys there to support us and cheer us on. After having a bit of break and a team talk everyone got there head up and played another game of netball winning by 10 points against Rockhampton Girls Grammar. Once our game was over, we all headed back and hopped into the nice cold pool to relax our muscles. After the pool was done we all went and did some bonding watching Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, whilst waiting for Tayla and Annabel to cook some pizzas. After pizza, we were all ready for bed and the last day of netball.

It was the last day of the carnival – Finals Day. Our last game was against Xavier Catholic College. This was another close, hard fought and physical game, and we came away with a 1 goal loss right on the buzzer. This left us to finish 6th in Divi-sion 5. We all were very happy with this result, as we finished higher then we have hoped.

I would like to congratulate Sarah Santo for being awarded Best and Fairest for the Carnival. I would like to thank all the parents and supporters who came along and encouraged us throughout the week. A special thank you goes to Miss Taylor and Miss Meyer for being our mums and putting up with us and dealing with us for the week. And we would like to thank Mrs Storey for preparing us and getting us ready for the past year.

Cattle Club

Mickala Gough Year 11

As we kick off semester three; while the majority of our club members were off on holidays a couple of our mem-bers had attended the Malanda and Atherton Showing circuit. Here Karina Osswin, year 11, and female supervisor Glenysis, Jack and Jayna Stralow; worked alongside Kelly Williams and her Droughtmaster Stud Kel-lee. While showing these cattle our members gained valuable and new knowledge; they would like to thank Kel-lee and every-one who made it possible.

Charters Towers Show has approached us in the blink of an eye this semester but we still managed to keep our cool come out looking like champions. On Saturday 30th of July our members came down to the yards to prep and ready the cattle before taking them to the show grounds. On the Sunday numerous members of the club attended the weighing over at Columba with all beasts weighing in higher than expected; they then went over and got them settled into the pavilion for the night.

Monday morning everyone had a bright and early start to prep and ready the cattle for the big day ahead. At 9am we began the led classes taking out various places in the stud and commercial weight classes. Once this section was finished we moved onto the young paraders’ class here we received multiple blue and red ribbons with the ex-ception of a few whites. Once the cattle handling was completed we took the cattle up and bedded them down for a relaxing afternoon. Soon after we jumped right back into the ring for the young judge’s section once again taking out top prizes’ our students were thrilled to be there and did extremely well. Everyone was then sent to have a well-earned rest while points were being tallied. Once the scores were totalled we made our way down for presenta-tions; we were then presented with various awards including first prize in the overall Inter-School shield. With the happiest students there a couple of photos were taken our agricultural prefect Celeena Lawrence said a few words to thank the organisers and the other schools for their participation.

We are very pleased with the club and their efforts and thank Lionel for all his help and that extra push when we needed it most. We would also like to thank the Finger family for all their donations this year. Now the showing seasons are over we look forward to a peaceful club as we continue to work with the cattle and complete various jobs around the yards. Our next event remaining will be the ASSG fete where we will show our cattle and give the audience more information on who we are, we look forward to seeing you there.

Junior School

Tina Akers Head of Junior School

Welcome back to Term 3 The term has started smoothly and I would like to take this op-portunity to welcome the new families to the Junior School.

We have taken some great steps forward in all aspects of learning so far this year. School routines are well established and the stu-dent’s confidence continues to grow providing a strong platform for sustained success. Term 3 will be busy and productive as it is a crucial time in our School calendar with much learning and consolida-tion of prior knowledge. Along with our focused commitment to the core subjects we have a jam packed calendar of events and ac-tivities this term. We have a lot to look forward to: Inter-School Ath-letics Carnival, Australian Mathe-matics Competition, the Charters Towers Show, ICAS English, Char-ters Towers Eisteddfod and the Year 6 trip to Canberra, just to name a few.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival At ASSG we value perseverance and students striving for their per-sonal best in all areas. The Athlet-ics Carnival is one of the many events in our School calendar where we recognise our students for their outstanding athletic en-deavour, great sportsmanship and team spirit. It was great to see so many parents, grandparents and friends join us for the two days.

Congratulations to all of the stu-dents who participated. Wednes-day morning was action packed with students competing in the field events. Our Pre-prep, Prep and Little Souls children had a great time having a go at the vari-ous mini-challenges and working collaboratively to complete a rota-tion of developmentally appropri-ate ‘field events’. Great fun was had by all; the children, staff and parents.

PAGE 17 ISSUE NO 10/2016 5 AUGUST 2016

students who achieved their per-sonal best.

We wish all our athletes all the very best for their events at the 2016 Primary Inter-School Athlet-ics Carnival on Friday 5 August.

Super fly Film Workshops The Year 5 and 6 students were fortunate to work with Jed Cahill from the Qld Travelling Film Fes-tival to produce a short film called ‘A Bad Day Off”. Addition-ally, the Year 4 students learnt how the ‘Green Screen’ is used in film making to insert special ef-fects. This fantastic opportunity was part of the Super Fly Film-Making Workshop sponsored by the Charters Towers Council. Keep an eye out on the School’s Facebook page for the preview of the ghoulish Time Off School

Thank you, Miss Taylor and Miss Meyer for the planning and prepa-ration that went into the 2-day pro-gram. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Grounds and Maintenance staff for their efforts in preparing the ovals for the track and field events. Thanks to the Junior School staff and Gap staff for their energy, en-thusiasm and assistance over the two glorious days. A special men-tion and thanks must also go to the Year 6 and senior students who as-sisted JS staff with the running of the field events on Wednesday.

Over the two days we saw some courageous performances on the track and field and it was fantastic to see many records broken. Con-gratulations to Feetham and Beck-et, the 2016 Age Champions and all

film. Judging from the laughter, screams and cheers of excitement coming from the classroom during the filming, I am sure it will be very entertaining. Charters Towers Show Displays I would like to thank the JS stu-dents and teachers for the effort they have put into preparing the posters, samples of handwriting and art pieces and well done to everyone who had their work on display in the ASSG School exhibi-tion.

Year 6 Canberra Trip Our Year 6 students are on the countdown to their trip to Can-berra (Week 7). This trip is linked to the Australian Curriculum and is an amazing opportunity for the students. It will provide them with a stimulating, real-life expe-rience that will reinforce the con-tent that is taught in the Year 6 Civics and Citizenship, History, Science and the Arts curriculum. This educational excursion has been planned to also incorporate many and varied cultural institu-tions in the National Capital. Going Forward The JS staff are committed to providing quality teaching in our classrooms by offering a rich and diverse array of educational op-portunities and to enhance stu-dent learning and well-being. Throughout the term, we will have many conversations about professional practice and partici-pate in a number of professional learning opportunities. Through self and peer-facilitated reflection and feedback, we will continue to work together to provide every student with the opportunity to develop academically, physically and socially to their full potential. Ours is a unique and exceptional school because it has students who are interested in learning, staff who strive for excellence and a supportive community. We look forward to sharing the many aspects of the students’ learning and celebrating their successes with you throughout the term. Always learning, Serving others, Staying Safe and Going forward.

Thank you Mrs McGuire, Miss Browne, Mrs Polsen and Mrs Flem-ing for organising the All Souls St Gabriels display and our Mainte-nance staff for their assistance. Extra-Curricular Photo Day The photographers will be back in the School on Monday 8 August to take the group and extra-curricular group photos. All students are asked to wear their ‘day uniform’ for these photographs.

Welcome back for Semester 2. We have had a great start to the term and all of our kids are now back on deck and raring to go. Miss Meyer might disagree with me, consider-ing she had to postpone the Inter-house athletics for a week, but hav-ing a few days rain and wet fields is definitely the best reason to put it back. Our Year 11 and 12 students spent the first couple of weeks of term colour co-ordinating outfits and pre-paring for their Combined Schools Formal. As always this involves un-told shopping trips, suit fittings, make-up, manicures and hair ap-pointments prior to the night, and that was just the boys. All the time, effort and money was certainly worth it and all the parents should be extremely proud of their children because every one of them looked terrific on the night. Athletics It might have been a week late but the Inter-house athletics carnival was again one of the really great days on our school calendar. From our junior school kids up to our

senior students everyone gives their very best every time they compete and you can see how much they all love representing their House.

The spoils of victory were certainly spread around this year with Page winning the boys, Alban the girls and Becket/Feetham the com-bined. Well done to those houses on the results but congratulations also to everyone who competed, you all played a part in making the day so special. We now only have a couple of weeks to prepare for the Interschool carnival so there won’t be too much rest time for our athletes.

Show As I write this report our Horse and Cattle Club students are over at the show grounds competing in their chosen events. Lionel and Sally have had our kids working towards this for most of the year and I know how much they have been looking forward to it so I have my fingers crossed they all do well.

That’s it for now.

We are into the second half of the year and this term sees us into the athletics. We have just had the ath-letics carnival for Inter-House and as usual the students put on a great display. The sportsmanship and competitive drive shown is a credit to the culture we have amongst our students at All Souls St Gabriels. Page House did very well winning the boys competition outright and we also had two Age Champions from Page Dormitory. Darby Godfrey and Kade Banset both won their respective age groups with some great perfor-mances. Well done to everyone who competed for their house and now the training for the Inter-School athletics begins. We also have a lot of boys in Page Dormitory who have some Rugby League and Rugby Union games left this term. This will be the end of a long season of Club Sport and a great level of commitment shown by the boys involved. We are sure to have some boys involved in the Finals of the Rugby Union as well. We have a new boarder this Se-mester and I would like to extend a warm welcome to Brayden Richer who joins our Year 11 contingent. Brayden has made a great start and has already willingly involved himself in the athletics carnival as well as attending the Formal. Wel-come Brayden. Please contact me with any con-cerns you have about your son in boarding.

Ramsay House

Brenden Travers Senior Resident We’re back and we are into it. Term three has gotten off to a fly-ing start and we couldn’t be hap-pier here in Ramsay Dorm. First event in the calendar was the 2016 Inter-House athletics. Unfor-tunately Ramsay were unable to amass enough points to threaten the leader board, however, the ef-fort was extremely commendable. The highlight was House Captain Logan Guldbransen’s record break-ing shotput throw. Logan has bro-ken or threatened the shotput rec-ord every year he has competed and this year obliterated the open boy’s shotput record which, coinci-dentally, belonged to previous Ramsay House Captain, Tim Carter. Logan’s new shotput record is 14 plus metres and is unlikely to be broken any time soon. Also winning their shotput events for their age groups were Zac Steven-son and Lachlan Lathwell. Well done boys. Not all victories come in the form of ribbons, with Ramsay competi-tors Cody Sibson, Dan Rabuka and William Sibson impressing on the day with great efforts. William toiled away all day for a number of second and thirds in an age group with an immense amount of

Feetham House

Jake Diery Senior Resident I hope everyone had a great holi-day and enjoyed having the boy’s home for a well deserved few weeks. A lot of the boys got an ex-tra week with all the rain around which caused some of the roads to be closed. I didn’t hear any com-plaining about it but. The boys all love the fact that this term is only a 9 week one. They have told me that the last one was just too long and they normally get the same re-sponse from me about it, “well boys I guess you will just have to suck it up”. I must say but the boys had a great 2nd term even though it was so long and full on with sports. Well done guys. We have just had our Inter-House athletics day and the Feetham boys should all be very proud of the way they competed and cheered for their mates. Feetham won the combined with Becket House and also had a lot of boys walk away with runners up or age champion credits at the end of the day. So to Jimmy Mann, Tom Mar-shall, Tim Ievers, Brent Marshall and Max Allingham I would like to say a big congratulations. There were many more boys out there that tried their hearts out and nev-er gave up. Jimmy McDowall really impressed me with his efforts and his never give up attitude. To all that made the team make sure you go to training and all the best in 2 weeks time against the other schools. We also have the Charters Towers Show on this week and I know there will be a lot of broke boys at the end of it. I hope you all have fun guys and don’t spend too much money. With the show here I have been reminding the boys that there are a lot more colds and oth-er flus going around at the mo-ment so washing their hands and keeping their hands to themselves

talent and thoroughly deserves congratulations for his efforts. Co-dy and Dan shone in their throw-ing events but then also backed up with efforts in their less favoured running events so that Ramsay could be competitive. House spirit is built on these efforts and Ram-say will have a bright future if they continue to see leadership like Co-dy and Dan showed on the day. After the Athletics always comes the show. Once again this year Ramsay’s strong cattle club contin-gent will be representing the school with Mathew Finger, Harri-son Finger, Robert Lawrence, Ca-sey Hopf, Brandon Finger, Camden Finger, Lachlan Lathwell and Aiden Powell all competing in the cattle leading and judging competitions. As I write this they are making their final preparations and will un-doubtedly do a fantastic job repre-senting the school. Last weekend I was lucky enough to be able see the U14 Bulls com-pete against the competition lead-ers, Teachers West. I have been watching this team play all year and have been thoroughly im-pressed by the improvement they have shown. At the beginning of the year the boys were on the back end of a few 50 point losses yet their commitment has not waned. They have continued to toil away all year and only narrow-ly went down against Teachers af-ter dominating field position for most of the game. Ramsay players Albert Luke, Kane Whiting and Matt Franettovich were particularly impressive and deserve to be con-gratulated for their efforts. I am certain that the hard work they have been doing will soon begin to reap rewards. Keep up the good work gents. That’s all from Ramsay for now, as always, if you would like to get in contact please feel free to do so any time via email or phone.

Alban House

Narelle Kelly Senior Resident

Term 3 has commenced and we have welcomed back all of our Al-ban girls after a refreshing 3-week holiday. The girls all seemed very happy to catch up with their friends and have told us plenty of exciting stories from their holidays. The term has begun busily with sport and other extra-curricular activities. Last week the inter-house Athletics took place on Wednesday and Thursday and we were very excited to see Alban House come out as the overall girls WINNERS! Special mention to the senior girl’s relay team; consisting of Tayla Davidson, Sarah Santo, Aby Philipson and Jes-se Whiting, who bought Alban home strong with a great win at the end of the day. Also, the intermedi-ate girls, Chelsea Mosch, Tara Yung, Hannah Fraser and Camryn Guldbransen, who came second. All the Alban Girls tried their best and maintained a strong house spirit throughout the carnival; whilst hav-ing heaps of fun of course.

On Friday night last week most of the Alban year 11 and 12s, includ-ing myself, were involved in the In-ter-School Formal. After the panic of finding the right dress, rushing around for spray tans, hair and make-up appointments, it finally all payed off on the night as everyone looked amazing and had a great time.

As the show is underway, the girls involved in Cattle Club, Horse club and other cultural activities have been kept busy. These Students have been doing a great job and certainly represent the school with pride. The boarders are also very excited to head off to the show on Monday night for a look around at the displays and of course, the show rides.

With only 7 weeks to go (including this week) the term is underway and the girls are getting busy quick-

ly with academics, sport and other activities and I’m sure that while everyone is busy the term will be over quicker than we realise. – Katie Core- Year 12

This edition the girls have some things to write about what they got up to over the holidays. So enjoy their writings.

April Dixon, Year 7 - The last school holidays June/July my dad told me to get ready for a hard working holiday. I arrived home on Thursday our travel day, as the next day was the start of our annual Gregory Downs Camp Draft, in which I was competing in the gym-khana and the junior camp draft. I felt like I had a rough start as I hadn’t ridden my horse since the previous holidays and therefore I only had 24 hours to practice not to mention how nervous I felt. Satur-day came and I competed in the Gymkhana which included barrel racing, figure of 8, bending, flags and the walk trot lead on my horse “Angel”. We did good and I had a great time. On Sunday, I was a competitor 8 in the junior draft, this was my first time competing in the draft and I got a score of 18 in the camp, I was very pleased with my run. Monday came and I was off to an early start checking bores with dad as well as trucking all the inter-nal cattle after mustering. I also had a trip to MT Isa to go to the dentist and a trip to Cloncurry to take the cattle truck for its yearly road inspection. During the last week of the holidays, I managed to help mum for 2 days, butchering, we cut up beef, crumbed steak and did some mincing. We also had a BBQ to watch the last state of origin at the main Station and not to men-tion the yummy feed of rib bones and to catch up with the crew.

Chloe Frohloff, Year 8 - On the first weekend of the holidays, I went to a luncheon at Winchester Downs. We got back that Sunday. On Monday and throughout the week we did some mustering until Thursday. On Thursday we left to go down to Twin Hills with some

New Gap Staff Mac Horne Gap Staff Co-ordinator The School welcomes four new young men who will be here for almost one year. They are: Bas-tian BAETGE, Jaron FUHRMANN, Thorben HASSE - all from Ger-many, and Sullivan BEAMISH from Canada. They arrived in Australia a week before coming to Charters Tow-ers, for orientation about our country and its ways, in Mel-bourne. They have settled in well and are already popular among staff and students. They like our winter weather and the green country-side. They are not keen about vegemite and I have told them that it is an acquired taste to out-siders, and popular in Australia. They have seen one NRL game and will, I think, stick to their be-loved game of soccer. They will be assisting in a variety of ways at the School, as teach-er's aides, in the laundry and kitchen, at School sporting events, and on some excursions. We wish them well during their time here at ASSG.

other people. At Twin Hills we ro-tated around with different people to learn a thing or two on the right and wrong way to ride a horse and what you should do when you are camp drafting. On Sunday there was the camp draft. On the second week of holidays we did not do much because it was raining most of the time. Last week we helped Dad because the Kids and Mum went back to school.

Charlee Keleher, Year 9 - On the holidays my Sum, Sister and I went to New Zealand for 16 days to visit family. For the first week we were in the North Island with mum’s best friend and then my sister and I went to my aunties to see some of our cousins. We spent most of the time sitting in front of the fire but did plenty of tourism related activities. We went to the shearing sheds and seen the sheep get sheared and scanned for lambs. The next week we flew to the South Island to Queenstown to visit Granddad. With heaps of bus tickets, we did heaps of shop-ping and managed to make it to ice-skating, the Remarkable and the gondolas. The only disappoint-ment was that it snowed after we had been up to the Remarkable, just before we left to come home.

Tayla Davidson, Year 12 - On the first week of holidays I had the privilege to travel down to Rock-hampton to play netball with the Gabes Inferno team. It was defi-nitely an experience to remember. After a week of netball and having fun with the girls it was time to head home to Richmond ready for a relaxing holiday. My holidays consist of sleeping, riding the mo-torbike, feeding the cows and catching up with family and friends. I enjoyed my holidays but it's always good to come back to school and see your friends!

Thank you Girls for your insight in-to your holidays.

Please ring should you have any concerns.

Becket House

Teneil Smale Senior Resident Recharged and off to a flying start. The dorm has been abuzz with for-mal preparations and talk of the Charters Towers Show. Bringing home the Ribbons Becket boarders are very proud of our Horse Club girls, as I write this they are preparing to represent All Souls at the Charters Towers Show. A word from Katie Jones - Senior 2016 Thank you to everyone involved in organising the Formal, a special thank you to Gully who spent sever-al days running students to ap-pointments and our parents who continue to make our senior year one to remember. Everyone looked stunning, even the boys managed to scrub up pretty well after athlet-ics day. The big surprise of the evening..., who knew All Souls had so many great dancers? Back to normal With the show and formal behind us, we will be able to settle back in-to routine. As staff, we will be fo-cusing on ensuring our girls get the vital rest needed to be at their best.
