Community Counts As our next community event is approaching, the Year 7 and 8 hockey tournaments on the 12th and 19th of May respectively, we thought you would like an update on scores on the doors in this year’s race to be crowned Learning Community Champions!

S Band have secured the lion’s share of the points so far with 3068 points...but it’s close! G Band are on their heels with 2893 points, only 175 points behind! I Band aren’t out of the race yet...last year’s winners are on 2454 points and could still make up the difference with the remaining points on offer.

With Year 9 and 10 rounders, sports day, individual year group events and the final certificate round up there are still plenty of events for students to get involved in to

help secure their community teams’ final positions.

Attendance and Reporting Absence from School Good attendance and punctuality matter. Our expectations are that students will achieve at least 95% attendance, unless there are exceptional medical circumstances. Even 95% allows for two weeks' absence.

It goes without saying that there is a very high correlation between school achievement and good attendance, and we monitor this very closely and ask for you to work in partnership with us in seeing your child make the very best of school life. Please encourage your child to be punctual; it is obviously very good training for future life. Our school gates close at 8.30 as registration starts and open again at 3.05pm when school finishes. Any student arriving to school late must sign in at Reception with a note or planner comment explaining their lateness. If your child is ill or unavoidably absent, please telephone the school explaining the absence before 8.45 am. This must be done on each day of absence, followed by a letter of explanation when your child returns to school. It will only be in extremely exceptional circumstances that any leave of absence of more than 5 days will be granted. Medical and dental appointments should be noted in your son or daughter’s planner and shown to their tutor and as to reception as they leave. All Key Stage 3 and 4 students must sign out at the main Reception and sign back in at reception on their return. Key Stage 5 students must report to the Post 16 Office before leaving and sign in/out using their registers near reception.

Who are England’s Top Sixth Form Subject Performers? Each year Oxford Analytical Research carry out a comprehensive study of the performance of sixth forms throughout the country, celebrating sixth form excellence. Last year, this popular analysis was viewed over 150,000 times. There is a variety of information available concerning overall institutional performance but this is the only national comparative analysis at subject level, which considers student progress in preference to student outcomes. It seeks to shine a light on examples of excellence and celebrate what is often invisible (and uncelebrated) in headline performance table measures. Each year they look at a different perspective. For this year’s analysis, they considered academic (school sixth-forms) and vocational (all providers) performance in 2015 and it has to be said...we did rather well!

Ilkley Grammar School PTA Needs You! Our next Car Boot Sale is approaching and we need volunteers for set-up on Saturday 14th May (between 2-4pm) and on the day itself, Sunday 15th May (between 7am - 1pm).

If you could help, for just a couple of hours, it would be a great help. The boot sales are a big generator of funds for the school and it was unfortunate that the first one of the season had to be cancelled because of the state of the pitch. Leeds University Half Term Maths Challenge Leeds University received a total of over 650 entries to the February Half-term Maths Challenge Competitions from schools around the region and were very impressed both by the quality of the answers and the effort put in by the pupils. Some of our IGS students did particularly well and have been invited to a special prize giving evening on 18th May at Leeds University. As well as Jacob Cooke (10MWC), Nathan Foster (10MWC), Nathaniel Richardson (9PB), Matthew Hunter (8MH), Iona Lee-Wardell (8ASH) and Alex Harlen (8LNR) being awarded merits, Sophia Richards (10JB) won 1st prize overall. This is the second time that Sophia has been the overall winner, she won 1st prize in the Junior Half-term Challenge back in 2014, so special congratulations to her!

Congratulations to our Year 10 football team: Cameron Shankland (10MEK); Adam Hayes (10CW); Joe Haigh (10LV); Ben Knight (10MEK); Max Turner (10JPC); James Silson (10MWC); Tom Archer (10KL); James Hudson (10MEK); Ben Bearpark (10LV); Christian Farrar (10JK); George Dey (10MWC); Tom Millen (10CW); Jack Harrison (10JK) and Ralph Atkinson (10CW) who have secured their place in the final of the Leeds Champion’s Cup. The team played Cardinal Heenan last Friday in the semi-final and won the match 3 - 2.

Christian Farrar scored 2 goals and after coming on as a substitute, Ralph Atkinson scored the winner with his first touch with about 10 minutes to go.

Good luck in the final boys!

Well done and good luck to Ruby Sugden (9HED) and Ella Shouler-Harris (9SL) who have been selected for West Yorkshire County Netball Trials in September. This is a fantastic achievement for the girls and we wish them the very best of luck!

Bravo to Lucy Carter (13JLI) who has achieved tremendous success with the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT). Founded in 1976, the NYMT offers exceptional opportunities in pre-professional, musical theatre training for talented young people aged 10 to 23 years through skills workshops, master classes and residential courses led by industry professionals. These opportunities exist for stage performers, musicians, technicians and stage crew and, through their Creative Team Mentorship programme, for aspiring directors, musical directors, choreographers and designers.

The NYMT represents the very best in work with young people through musical theatre, enabling thousands of youngsters across the UK to develop both their creative and personal potential, leading Andrew Lloyd Webber to dub it “the finest youth music theatre in the world”.

In January, Lucy travelled to Birmingham for a first round of auditions for the well renowned theatre. Auditions take place in many locations throughout the country and attract auditionees in the thousands. Having been successful in this audition she was invited for a second round in London during February half term and was delighted then to be cast in one of this year's shows, ’Brass’ which will be performed at the Hackney Empire in London in August.

Heart-breaking and uplifting, Brass tells the story of a group of men from a Leeds-based brass band who sign up to fight as part of the Leeds Pals Battalion. In their absence, their women folk, all munitions workers at the infamous Barnbow factory, decide to learn the instruments the men have left behind in the hope of playing triumphantly for them on their return from war.

Lucy travelled to Sevenoaks to spend a week of the Easter holidays rehearsing for Brass. As part of the experience she will also travel to France to film a short piece for the BBC and there are plans for other commemorations involving NYMT as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Many of you will remember that Lucy played a very charismatic ‘Fagin’ in our school production of Oliver and is a veteran of many Upstagers' pantomimes and musicals.

Watch out for Lucy’s name in lights in the future...definitely one to look out for!

Well done to Ethan Whiteside (9PDH) who competed in the U15 British Schools’ Cycling Association National Mountain Bike Championship on Sunday 1st May and won! The cycling event took place at Penistone Hill Country Park, near Haworth. The riders were not only up against the elements with cold and windy conditions for much of the day, but also with the terrain. Although a beautiful backdrop the race made the most of the gruelling moors which are currently doubling up as the film set for the forthcoming drama documentary of the early years of the Bronte family. The event was set on a challenging course on the same moorland that Wuthering Heights was set.

Congratulations and thank you to our Year 7 avid readers who spent their recent Easter holidays with their noses in books. They weren't just reading for enjoyment but also for money! Students were sponsored to read as many books as possible for Readathon. The money raised by this amazing charity provides children's hospitals with regular storyteller visits, plus a mobile bookcase jam-packed full of brand new books which are replenished every six weeks. The year group raised a fantastic £1344.17...well done Year 7!

Skipton Parkrun last weekend. Skipton Parkrun is a free weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 9:00am in Aireville Park, Skipton. It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and is an opportunity for all the local community to get together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active.

Although Oscar didn’t achieve a PB this time, he did come home in 3rd position!

Congratulations to Sociology student Rebecca Wenmoth (13AH) who recently sent a response to the Guardian article below, asking people to comment after MPs voted against offering sanctuary to Syrian child refugees. Rebecca’s response, the youngest student to be included, was published in the Guardian! You can read the full article here.

University of Aberdeen Summer School The University of Aberdeen is delighted to be hosting a fully-funded 4 day summer school this year, Monday 25th – Thursday 28th July, to give students a flavour of studying in Scotland. The programme will be relevant to a student’s subject interests, it is free of charge and all those who attend will receive a £100 travel bursary. Kumon Opportunities Kumon Ilkley Study Centre are looking for Class Assistants. The work is Thursdays and Fridays 3.45pm to 5.45pm. Assistants help with the administration and study development of children at the Ilkley Study Centre based at Christchurch. The children range in age from 5 to 15, most studying the Kumon Maths programme but some studying English as well. The main responsibilities are: to give assistance to students in consultation with the Instructor; to mark and record work as necessary and to help with the setting up of class if necessary. The position would be ideally suited to A Level Maths or English students. Training in relevant aspects of the Kumon method and procedures will be given, pay is £6.00 per hour. Apprenticeships – Learn as you Earn! The BBC is launching a new pilot local apprenticeship across BBC English Regions that offer a career pathway into Broadcast and Communication Operations. On May 8th the applications for the 2016 Broadcast Operator (BOA) Apprenticeship close. They are looking for those aged 17+ and interested in Camera/Sound Operation to work at one of their local Radio/TV stations whilst gaining a qualification to support the newsgathering, radio and current affairs content creation their local editorial teams produce each and every day. They also have a new 4 year degree based Software Developer apprenticeship based up in Salford, North West Eng-land. Year 12 Humanities Event - Facets of Classics - 12th July 2016 The University of Leeds are inviting Year 12 students to Facets of Classics, an event introducing a series of workshops which aim to open up the study of Classics at university to students of other humanities subjects, as well as those already studying Classics. The event, which will take place on Tuesday 12th July, aims to give students an experience of the university campus while raising their awareness of a subject open for them to study at university which they may or may not already have considered. This is a particularly timely opportunity as Year 12 students begin to think seriously about applying to university and consider what subject(s) they may wish to study. Facets of Classics workshops are structured around A-Level Philosophy, Language, Literature, History subjects in order to empower students to use skills from other disciplines to study classical material. The workshops are primarily aimed at non-classicists to apply their skills from other disciplines to studying classical material for the first time. However, they also encourage Classics A-Level students to consider the breadth of the discipline beyond their curriculum as a taste of what’s on offer at university level. The day aims to engage students from different disciplines and backgrounds in classical studies, to ultimately offer them a better understanding as to the variety of subjects that classics both encompasses and complements. For more information on the content of the workshops, please visit their webpage here. Students will be able to attend two academic workshops as well as meet a number of researchers and students from the Classics department in order to find out about the many aspects of studying Classics. Morning refreshments will be provided but you will need to take a packed lunch. Places can be requested by completing the booking form (available from the Post 16 Office) with student details, including what relevant A Levels they are studying (as this will help them understand who is attending and allocate students to workshops) and return it to [email protected] by Friday 27th May.
