Matthew Spencer (8JP) Anne Hindle Golf Competition winner

Post 16 Tennis tournament: Tom Knapton and Matt Newell final score finished 6-3 to Tom.

Community Sports Day 2014 Our Community Sports Day took place this week and students were able to choose between traditional sports, the golf tournament, creative activities (the catapult challenge, egg drop, origami were just some of the choices) and fun sports (Gladiator, obstacle course and tug of war). The activities certainly brought out the competitive nature of our students, pitting communities against each other to secure Learning Communities points. With the final tally still being worked out you will have to read next week’s Headline to find out who won team and individual prizes.

Congratulations to Sophie Tarring (7SP) who has been awarded the Headteacher’s Commendation certificate for achieving 40+ credits above Platinum!

Sophie is the first student in the school this year to achieve this – it is rare for any student to achieve so much in a year and this award has been received very few times.

Well done to our Year 7,8 and 10 rounders team who were all presented with their medals and trophies from the Bradford School League finals. All three winning teams...great effort girls!

Congratulations to Harry Hunt (9AHF) who came a very creditable fourth in the BSCA (British Schools’ Cycling Associate) Grass Track Championship at Roundhay Park in Leeds last Saturday. The event took the form of an omnium with three races counting to the overall positions. The three races were a one lap sprint with heats and a final, a pursuit and then a scratch race.

Congratulations to our Year 8 cricket team who are looking forward to taking part in the Yorkshire Post Competition final at Headingley for a third year running. They played valiantly in the semi-final on Thursday 3rd July against Morley Academy. Despite being 30 for 5 after 10 overs the Year 8 team managed to dig deep and beat their opposition in the semi-final of the Yorkshire Post Competition. Ilkley batted first and managed to score 109 after 20 overs. Captain Oliver Burton was the pick of the batsman with 50 from 50 balls. The team bowled and fielded superbly and restricted Morley to 97 for 8 after 20 overs. This is a fantastic achievement for the team!

Headingley...here we come!

The quiz began on Tuesday the 22nd of April ended on Friday the 20th of June. There were 8 weekly rounds, focusing on the Yorkshire, Lille, Nancy, Mulhouse, Grenoble, Pau/Lourdes, Nimes/Carcassonne and Paris/Ile de France étapes respectively. Teams from all over the country were invited to compete. 17 schools started the TDF journey, 14 teams finished after covering 3,664km. The team answered 59 questions, posted 32 comments, completed 7 creative tasks and viewed 4,809 web pages...phew!

They all attended a prize giving ceremony at York University on July 3rd where they were awarded the overall team prize and Laura King won the individual poster prize.

Well done to ‘Les Roulers Fous’: Catherine Boyle (10ACD), Laura King (10FV), Milly Horn (10AJH), Sarah Yorke (10ALS), Ethan Thompson (10VEB) and Nathan Spiller (10VEB) who won the TDF Language Competition. York University organised the Tour de France quiz which included a batch of questions/activities released once a week for 8 weeks.

Bloomin’ Marvellous We have really enjoyed the transformed garden (at the front of the building) this year. Throughout the seasons we have had something to look at: the decorated Christmas tree in winter, the flowers in spring and now it has been turned into a kitchen garden for summer. Following the recent addition of fruit trees and a willow arch, the garden has welcomed our mosaics this week.

The mosaics were created by Natasha Cheater (8ADM), Jake Broughton (8GPS), Georgie Varley Lambert (9JLF), AJ Johnson (8GPS) and Penny Burns (8CW/SF) along with a little help from Sheila Woodhead, a local artist and musician. Two members of our Nell Bank team, Levi Ali-Jones (10ACD) and Ethan Russell (10ALS), helped install the mosaics — all in all a real team effort.

The Gardening Club have also ensured our school kitchen reap the rewards of a well stocked garden. They have supplied salad vegetables that have been used in school meals ...in exchange for biscuits and juice for our hardworking team! The mutually beneficial relationship will continue next year, so our students can look forward to more garden fresh produce appearing in their meals.

It has been said before, but our garden has never looked so lovely!

On Wednesday evening we held our Transition Parents’ Evening where we welcomed our new Year 7 students and their families. This alongside today’s Transition Sports Day are the final events in the transition calendar. The sport’s event is a great opportunity for the students to mix with students from other Primaries and start to form new friendships and begin to recognise the odd friendly face.

The Welcome Evening is a fantastic opportunity for new students to have one final look around school, before September, for parents to meet tutors, speak to our uniform suppliers, school health team, music service and catering company. Our PTA were also on hand to encourage new parents to sign up and join in! Our current Year 7 students provided both music and drama for our visitors entertainment, and two students even volunteered to be models, showing the IGS uniform at it’s best.

All new Year 7 students will join school on Tuesday 9th September, along with Years 12 and 13. The remainder of school will start their new academic year on Wednesday 10th September.

Transition Complete!

Lizzie Gurney (7LAM), Dominic Fisher (7LG) and Sam Evans (7LG) provided the music for the evening

The Year 7 Drama group displayed their acting talents.
