The more resistant rock is left sticking out
into the sea called a headland.
The softer rock is eroded by the sea-
forming a bay.
This area is now more sheltered, this
encourages deposition and beaches are
formed.

Surrounded by deep water and exposed to
the full force of the waves- the headlands
are eroded.
The shallower waters in the bay continue to encourage deposition.

This is a chalk headland.
Because chalk is a sedimentary rock, lines of weakness run throughout
the headland.
Hydraulic action will exploit these weaknesses.
![Page 8: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Between low and high tide, waves will attack the
base of the headland.
HT
LT
The process of corrasion will undercut the base of the cliff, forming a wave
cut notch.
![Page 9: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The undercutting by corrasion will make the
cliff unstable.
HT
LTThis creates small caves which are enlarged over
time by erosion.
![Page 10: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Caves develop on either side of the headland.
HT
LT
These caves erode back through the headland and
meet, forming an arch.
![Page 11: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Continued erosion at the base of the arch will cause
the roof to become unstable.
HT
LTIt may collapse leaving a stack.
![Page 12: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Continued erosion of the base of the stack may lead to its collapse, resulting in
a stump.

1
You need your template. This will represent a chalk
headland.
![Page 15: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
2
Using a blue crayon- shade the outside horizontal strips- these represent the sea.
![Page 16: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
3
Using a green crayon- shade the middle horizontal strip-
this represents the top of the headland- exposed to
weathering.
![Page 17: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
4 Just above the horizontal
blue lines- shade a grey line-
make sure it reaches the top
of the wave-cut notch. This
represents wave action
between high and low tide.

5
Carefully cut out all the black areas on the template- with the exception of the wave-
cut notch.
Don’t cut off your stump!

6
It should look like this...
![Page 20: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
7 Using a ruler, carefully fold the horizontal lines.
![Page 21: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
8Like this...
![Page 22: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
9 Glue along the two blue horizontal strips- on the reverse!
![Page 23: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
10
Position the green strip over the centre of your book. Gently glue down the blue horizontal strip- the one with the stump.- Practice your positioning first.
![Page 24: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
11
Carefully practice folding the
model... are the folds the
right way?
![Page 25: Headland Erosion Stack Formation](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062513/555714d2d8b42a067f8b458d/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
12Finally, glue the final blue strip down. Practice the
positioning first...

13 Gently close your book...
