NEWSLETTER FOR APRIL 1979
As predicted in the March NewsLetter, Last month was indeed a month of change. A new Cormrittee was duLy eLected at the AnnuaL GeneraL Meeting heLd on 26th February and appointments nnde by the new committee are given on page two this issue. The resignation of John Davis took effect on 21st February, thus, foLLowing the appointment of a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Treasurer the new committee immediateLy addx>essed itseLf to the pressing probLem of the appointment of a Manager, which is being vigorousLy pursued.
In the absence of a Manager the roLe of the committee is necessariLy =de more arduous, members chairing the various sub-committees having not onLy to formuLate generaL poLicy but aLso to attend to day-to-day controL and allministration of the CLub's affairs.
One of the Less important probLems has been the production of the NewsLetter, abLy edited for the Last . three years by John Davis. We apoLogise here for any shortcomings in the present issue but hope that in future increased famiLiarity with sources of information and production technique wiLL enabLe us to produce, on time, an interesting and readabLe NewsLetter, eagerLy awaited by Members and wives and not Left on the desk or consigned unopened to the wastebasket.

ONE-DAY SNOOKER TOURNAME.VT
A one-day snooker tournament held on Monday, 12 March came to an exciting conclusion with three players scoring three wins and one loss. In the last game of the evening, "venerable" Les Collings eked out a win over Bill Sennett, 48-36, and had the distinction of being the highest point s scorer on the night. With the pink and the black still on the table, Bill had a chance to draw the game, and emerge the over-all winner. But sharp-eyed Les was having none of that; he took the pink to secure the win, and left the black to Bill.
Five people entered the tournament, an aU-pLay-aU format, with the number of red balls reduced to ten. Play ran from about 7 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., and there were some close scores. Young Alan Sennett beat Les 56-54, and John Laird 35-32.

GOLF SECTION
.Sunday 25th February saw the section tee-off at 8 a.m. at the Don Muang "Cobra" aOUT'se in the monthly medal aompetition. Thlenty-six players turned out to do vnttle with the course whiah was in good condition, with plenty of water hazards strategically placed. M2gnus Stirling obviously benefitting trom being released from the worries of being Section Secretary had a good round and earned the silver salver with a net 66. Close on his heels was Ernie Jurgens with a 67, whilst the ever consistent Julien Wells picked-up third prize with a 70. Aating Captain, Mike Neville with a net 36 had the best outward nine whilst his partner Derek Pott came home in 34 which placed him ahead of the rest of the field.
John Lenaghan had the best low gross with a very sound 84.
Dunlop Trophy
In conjunction with the monthly medal, two matches in the Dunlop Trophy were also played. In a Preliminary Round, Mike Neville and Derek Pott played Sheila Neville and Noeleen Coulson. The ladies with Sheila giving strokes, played very well and for most of the match led the men . However, coming to the 18th the men were one up but Sheila and Noeleen undaunted Won the 18th to square the match.
However with Noeleen departing on leave to Australia before the next round is due to be played, the ladies offered to concede victory to the men, and just to show that the days of chivalry are not over, Mike and Derek acaepted gratefUlly.
In the second match the Quinns, Dennis and Anne had a dingdong battle with John Lenaghan and David Frost and at the 14th hole Dennis and Anne were two up. However John and David, always happy to acaept odds, fought back and after the 17th the match was all square. The 18th green was where the match was decided and Anne and Dennis playing very steadily won the hole and thereby the match to go forward into the semi-final. On their present form, Dennis and Anne must assume the mantel of favouri t es.

GoLf Report
The Section had their Last outing at the Rose Garden and the event was an 'IndividuaL StalJLeford' Competition. On the day we had the biggest turn-out of members todate, with 37 Club members participating and in addition, we had 7 golfers [rom Abu Dhabi joining us for the day. Conditions were rather hot but Rupert Jameson managed to shake off the effects of the heat and came home with 41 points which earned him first prize which was a LoveLy siLver cigarette box. Second on 39 points was Ken Boughton, who coLlected a silver tankard for his sound performance . Julien WeLls won the third prize, which was a silver ashtray, with 38 points, winning after a countback [rom David Frost. However, David did not go away empty handed as opening his shouLders he collected the prize for the longest drive. Nearest the pin went to Leon Van der Watt, who rrakes a habit of coLlecting such prizes.
At the Rose Garden, three further matches in the quarterfinal of the Dunlop Trophy were played and in the first one Mike Neville and Derek Pott no doubt thought they were home and dry when with five hoLes to play, against Iain Brown and Jacques Morin, they were lying four up. However, the FrancoScottish pairing pulled themselves together and arrived at the 18th tee with the match aLL square. Holes were halved at the 18th, 19th and 20th and finally on the 21st Iain and Jacques completed a remarkable recovery by winning the match. It was obviously disappointing for Mike and Derek but they both took the loss very sportingly. In the second match, Dai Fravit and Peter Adcock found themselves trailing to Tarrmy Madar and Jeremy Watson but in the end managed to puLl back from the deficit and won the match 2 and 1. In the third match, Margaret Miller partnered by Peter Speed took on Derek Watson, alone as for the first 9 hoZes he was minus his. partner, Scot Younger. This handicap was too much and Margaret and Peter came home easy winners at 6 and 5, to book themselves a place in the semi-finals.

Tuesday and Thursday afternoons still see Zo children ~imming up and d~ the pool, adding metres to their tallies and improving strokes and times. We arrff' very appreciative of the time given us by Doug Whittaker, ~hose excellent knowledge of strokes is helping the kids a great deal . After our meeting ~ith 5 other clubs last month at Kasetsart University pool, the realization came to all the kids that their speeds ~ere slow and would not improve till their strokes did-hence the emphasis bei ng lifted tram distance ~ each night to stroke and speed. We took Zo s~immers to Kasetsart and found over ZOO others there. Our group all ~am their best and all bettered their own previous times in one or all strokes . We were ~imming against Thailand's fastest juniors and didn't bring home many prizes. The 11 and 12 year old girls' relay team ~on third place, Alexandra Weymouth gained 5th place in Back stroke and butterfly and Graham Walsingham gained 5th place in backstroke. TENNIS SECTION
The Annual Club Championships were oonoluded at the end of February. Chairman of the Club, Peter Adoook, presented trophies and prizes to winners and runners-up following tea on finals day. Not exaotly Wimbledon, but a very pleasant event. The results are on the next page of this bulletin, but speoial mention must be made here of John Cox's wins in all three events, and Graoe White's two wins - with a very near miss in the mixed doubles final where she and husband John . lost 6-3, 6-4 to (you've guessed it) John Cox and Charmian Roux. Heartiest thanks to all those oonoerned, players and organisers, as well as to the Dunlop Sports oompany for their support and supply of balls, and to Tessa Wells for organising all the prizes eto.
Maintenance and repairs of the oourts oontinues. Courts Nos. 1 & 2, following returfing of base lines, are baok in play and work has started to bring oourts Nos. 3 & 4 up to standard. Obviously until all four oourts are baok in good oondition restriotions will have to oontinue on oourt usage. The present system will therefore be oontinued through April with all oourts oompletely olosed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Two oourts will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2.00 p.m. onwards, and a minimum of two oourts all day Saturday and Sunday. To ensure you are not disappointed please reserve your oourts in advanoe - the booking sohedule, indioating whioh oourts are open, and when, is by the swimming pool bar. Bookings may not be made more than 6 days in advanoe.

Sinoe the mid-season report in February the oontinued to improve and are among the favourites the Cup Final style play-off between the top two oompletion of the League Championship.
The last four results have been:

V Cosmos W 4-0 Cobbett, Lenaghan, Brown, Balme v Ruam Rudee D 0-0 v Soandinavians W 1-0 Winter
Both matches against T.S.D. and Cosmos found the team in top gear, and with the defenae playing better than at any time during the season, opponents are finding life very difficult in sooring against us. The only goal reaenHy aonoeded arising trom a wayward alearance and aonsequently presenting a 'gift' to a T.S.D. forward. Three aonsecutive matches sinoe then showing a blank sooresheet testifies to our defensive improvements. Mid-field and Forwards too have been oombining very well, yet our last two matahes found the opponents defending aourageously aLso.
Our most reoent matah against the Saandinavians deserves speoial mention, sinae neither team aould afford to Lose without being virtuaUy eliminated from the finaL ahampionship run-in. Both teams pLayed oautiousLy in the first-haLf, yet several ohances were areated at both ends. One particuLar save by our new sensation in goal, Bill Appleyard, was reminisaent of Banks at his best. Several fine saves by the giant Soandinavian goalkeeper and a further speatacular effort by Appleyard, resulted .in the 0-0 half time saore.

Sparked by John Lenaghan and Dave Wallaae in mid-field the
team were more purposeful in the seaond half and it was no
surprise when, after several near misses we took the lead.
A ball aleverly played from defenae by Col Cobbett, followed
by swift interpassing in mid-field, eventually found leading
goal soarer Roger Winter, who without any hesitation shot
under the advanoing goalkeeper.
',' with four matches to play the Championship is wide open, with
aU our forthcoming opponents having a mathematioal ohanoe of
reaohing the final.
