Key things to consider when you start a HCI deployment

1. Design to HCL

2. Firmware/drivers up to date

3. Storage Class Network Switches; I.e. 25Gbps NICs

4. Choose appropriate Storage Policy and No. of Nodes

5. Design for resilience and performance

Achieve the Best Performance from HCI

1. Don’t oversubscribe – use NIOC on vDS

2. Right Size Disk groups and select NVMe for Cache and Capacity

3. Dedicated Controllers for Disk Groups

4. Enable only required services –Encryption, Deduplication and Compression t

5. Mirror vs Erasure Coding

Storage and Networking devices and configurations are key

Capacity for object components

Slack for component movement (~30%)

Cluster Capacity

Hot spare capacity (e.g. N+1)

1. Use the appropriate Storage Policy

2. Slack space considerations –30 % recommended

3. Hot Spare Capacity - N + 1 or N + 2 (beyond slack space needs)

4. Monitor usable capacity via vSAN capacity views

5. Add capacity by scaling out or up

Maintenance Considerations

1. Ensure vSAN Health Checks are green during regular maintenance

2. Choose the correct Maintenance Mode

3. Leverage vSphere Update Manager (VUM)

4. Avoid Parallel remediation of vSANNodes

5. Perform Proactive Disk rebalancing

Enhanced VUM integration is very popular

Key Troubleshooting Tips

1. Perform vSphere, vSANand Hardware Health Checks

2. Configure “Persistent” logging for performing RCA

3. Enable vSANPerformance services and vSAN Support Insight (CEIP)

4. Leverage VMware Skyline for vSphere and vSANHealth and Best Practices notifications
