MARCH 2020
A Mixed Bag of Messages from the Pastor
Stunned
On February 16th I was totally surprised by the
coffee fellowship marking the 13th anniversary of
my installation as your pastor at Haven Lutheran Church. I had
lost sight of that date but, God bless Kristin Andrews, she had not.
Kristen, her family and Marge Cunningham provided such a deli-
cious and fine fellowship. I was not only surprised but grateful.
Can you believe it? Thirteen years? What has God been up to at
Haven? I am forever curious and eager to see where the Spirit will
lead us. What do you see God doing? I would enjoy hearing what
you think.
Lessons from Surgery, Part II
Last month I mentioned in my newsletter article that God was al-
ready at work teaching me faith lessons as I approach surgery. My
first lesson was the undeniable, priceless value of being part of a
faithful, loving church community.
Those of you who have gone through surgery, will have already
guessed some of the other lessons I came to embrace. 1) Humble-
ness -- There is no other way to deal with a hospital gown that
opens in the back and the need to ask someone to escort you to
the bathroom. 2) Patience -- As you wait for someone to come to
escort you to the restroom, as staff have to come all hours (cont.)
HAVEN MISSION STATEMENT (adopted 2/26/06 by Haven Church)
“To honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the community
and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

of the day and night to check vitals, draw blood and do therapy, and as you face the illusion of ever
"being in control". 3) Humility -- It is the only way to respond when so very many people are gra-
cious in so many big and small ways. Such love and kindness just blew me away. 4) Laugh at yourself
and don't stress over the small stuff. When you can't bend, lift or twist you find yourself in some
downright awkward, silly and humiliating situations. Thank goodness God gave us humor. It is a
great band-aid for the awkward, silly and humiliating. 5) Healing is tiring and takes more time than
we would like. The body has its way of slowing you down when you need to heal. Happier the person
who listens. Last but not least 6) Joy comes disguised in many ways -- surprises, food, kindnesses,
notes and cards, a good night's sleep. How important it is to notice and celebrate each and every
glimmer of God's grace. Now, Lord, help me hold on to these gems you shared with me.
A Lenten Prayer
I offer you this prayer by Macrina Wiederkehr. Pray it with me during this Lenten season, fully trust-
ing in the goodness and love of our Lord, the Potter.
Prayer to the Potter
Dear Potter,
The lump of clay that I am
keeps crying for some form
day by day
I yearn for you to mold me.
This is a trust-song, Lord
I am in your hands like clay
I am ready to be transformed:
I expect
to be molded
I expect
to be beautiful
I expect
to be loved.
And if by chance
someone should drop me
as your apprentices sometimes do,
I expect
to be hurt.
I’m just trying to say
I have surrendered
to your dream for me
I am in your hands
like clay.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M Alessandri
EASTER FOOD BASKETS — With the arrival of Ash Wednesday, we start to think
about collecting food for the Food baskets we give to families at Fountaindale who
may need a little help. The “Giving Tree” with its branches full of items will appear
March 8, and we will collect food through Palm Sunday. The distribution will be
help on Wednesday, April 8th. As always, we will need volunteers to help pack, and
distribute. We also need a few people who could volunteer to deliver to those who
cannot get to the church- usually because of work hours or illness. More information
will appear in the weekly bulletins.
HOLLY PLACE is a non-profit organization that aims to provide senior residents with the best pos-
sible care in a “home-like” setting. In the month of March we will be collecting Toilet Paper and Dis-
infecting Wipes. Collecting these items as well as contributing our $100 monthly pledge, is what
helps keep Holly Place running. Please place your donated items in the bin provided in the narthex.
HAVEN’S BOOK CLUB — On Thursday, March 19, 2:00 pm we meet in the Parlor
to discuss THE WORLD THAT WE KNEW by Alice Hoffman. This novel is a hymn to
the power of resistance, perseverance & enduring love in dark times (Berlin,
WWII). Plan now to join us for tea & conversation. Joan Schupp
P.S. In April we will be reading ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN by Lisa See.
LADIES NIGHT OUT — After a few months of meeting for lunch in these dark win-
ter months, Ladies Night Out will be back actually getting together “at night” in March.
They will meet on Tuesday March 24, 6 pm at Cafe del Sol for dinner. Please watch for
a signup sheet in the Narthex

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY — Women will meet for scripture study & discus-
sion on Thursday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor. We will be studying Session
3 of "We Are Called" in which we take the "callings" of various people in the Bible and
consider how their stories and examples might be applied to our own "callings." The
study may be found in the March issue of "Gather" magazine. Copies will be available
on the mobile message board.
SCHOOL SUPPLY ITEMS NOW BEING ACCEPTED — As we re-
ported following the Block Party last August, the response to our School
Supply Giveaway was pretty phenomenal. We are almost completely out
of school supplies, and we will need many of them for this year's Givea-
way. So now that Christmas is over, be on the lookout for sales of school
supplies whenever and wherever they may occur and pick up a few
things to donate to this outreach. A box labeled " School Supplies" will
be in the vestibule.
Have a Joy-full Lent
While the season of Lent is rather somber, it is not intended to be joyless. It is just that joy may look
differently.
Reading the Lenten Devotional every day? Each time you open the booklet, imagine the Lord say-
ing your name and "I'm so glad you're here. I love our time together."
Choosing to fast (refrain) from something? Look for the lessons. Discover other enjoyable things to
fill the space. Look for the unexpected circumstance that helps you avoid a temptation. Ask God to
help.
Choosing sacrificial giving to the less fortunate? Relish the rush and freedom that comes with let-
ting go of resources for the good of another. Ask God to help you be a cheerful giver.
Deciding to add a good habit to during Lent? (ex. walk more, get more sleep, eat more fruit and
vegetables) Make it fun. Ask God to help. What is it you learn?
Above all else, whatever it is you choose as your Lenten practice, do it for the glory of God. Enter the
Lenten season seeking to draw near to the Lord and fully expect to be blessed in a variety of unex-
pected ways. Happy Lent!

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE SEPT. 13 FOR “GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.” SUNDAY,
THE ELCA’S DEDICATED DAY OF SERVICE.
Since 2013, “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday has inspir ed people of all ages to put
their faith in action through service projects that share God’s love with all of God’s people. As we
gather together in service to our neighbors, we are reminded of one of our most basic convictions
as Lutherans: All of life in Jesus Christ — every act of service, in every daily calling, in every cor-
ner of life — flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Will Haven do something
this year?

THANK YOU NOTES
My Dear Haven Family and Friends,
From the first announcement of my January 21 surgery and continuing through my recovery, you
have been only supportive, generous and kind. Thank you for the prayers that truly surrounded me
each day. I thank you for the get well cards, calls and gifts. I thank you for the soups and suppers. I
thank you for the offers for rides, errands, cat care and silly things like picking up fallen items when I
couldn't. God's love lives at Haven in each of you. I give thanks to God for each and every one of you.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M Alessandri
P.S. In case you did not hear the news, everything removed during surgery was benign. God is good.
All the time. All the time. God is good.

Pastor Dave Kaplan and Haven members,
Thank you Pastor Dave and the Haven congregation for your support with ‘Souper Bowl Sunday.
The Chiefs may have won the game but the big winner of Souper Bowl Sunday is St. Mark’s Food
Bank. Haven collected $18 dollars and 127 cans for the Food Bank. WAY TO GO HAVEN!
Dear Members of Haven Evangelical Lutheran Church, It is so heartening w hen w e re-
ceive a gift from a generous donor that allows us to say “yes” to one more child, family, or deserving
adult who needs the assistance of St, Mark’s Food Bank. More people than ever need the support of
outside organizations and because of your generosity, individuals and families continue to benefit
from the food we can provide them. We gratefully accept your recent giving of $221.50. It is clear
that you understand the importance of the ministry at St. Mark’s Food Bank. Through your contri-
bution, we are able to accomplish the mission God set in motion for us. “For I was hungry and you
gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Mat-
thew 25:35. You are helping us to make a difference in the lives of so many people. Thank you again
for your generous support! Sincerely, Pastor G. Stanley Steele, Julie Stouffer, Coordinator
Dear Friends of Holly Place, In behalf of the residents, staff, and the Board of Direc-
tors of Senior Living Alternatives, Inc. I would like to thank you. We received your generous dona-
tion of $229, $20, $100 to Holly Place, and it means the world to us and will help us reach our
matching grant of $20,000.00. Because of you, we can continue to serve at risk seniors, and provide
them a loving, safe, affordable place to call home. We are so fortunate to have you as a donor. Thank
you for investing in our organization and in the seniors we serve…
Sincerely, Melanie J. Davis, Ex. Director
Dear Friends at Haven Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thank you for your $100 dona-
tion to Reach of Washington County. Your generosity and compassion are a blessing to our commu-
nity. We are pleased to announce that our 2019 match campaign raised a grand total of $63,156.64!
We are so touched by the generous response to the campaign. This support helps us assist those in
need through our programs ranging from safety-net to independence; which include the Cold Weath-
er Shelter for the homeless adults, Case Management, the Day Resource Center, financial assistance
to serve those facing crises and Financial Literacy classes. We are excited to share that we launched
our newest program, Bridge to change in July. Together, we are changing lives! We assist approxi-
mately 3,500 Washington County residents annually with a staff of thirteen and over 1,600 volun-
teers; all working together to serve those in need in our county. During the last shelter season , we
had 225 individuals aged 19-80 sleep in the shelter; which totaled 6,818 bed nights. Over the last
fiscal year, we assisted 323 households with a variety of crisis needs; including eviction prevention,
getting into independent housing, emergency lodging placements, utility bills, ID’s Birth Certificates
and other imminent needs. We are grateful for the 1,600 volunteers who donate an estimated
15,000 hours of service to the Reach programs annually. This, in addition to the financial support of
many in the Washington County area, allows us to minister to individuals through the calendar year.
We recognize that without your partnerships we would be unable to continue our programs, result-
ing in countless people having to look elsewhere to have emergency needs met. Perhaps, they would
never be met at all. Your continued support will help us assist more people, ensuring more needs of
our community are met. Thank you for partnering with us in our endeavors to help those in need in
Washington County. Please follow us on Facebook or visit our website www.reachofwc.org for more
information about our programs, current needs and volunteering with us.
In Faith, Dana Jenkins, Executive Director
(letters in their entirety are posted in the narthex on the bulletin board)
I Wonder . . . Why do we get ashes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday?
And what does it have to do with the 40 days of Lent?
When we participate in the receiving of ashes, we are told “Remember, from dust
you came and dust you shall return.” I think these words are used to remind us
that we are nothing without God.
There are many times in the Bible where ashes are used to show mourning, repentance and sorrow.
In Genesis 18:27, Abraham reminds himself that though he has spoken to the lord, he is but dust and
ashes.
Jeremiah 6:26, Jonah 3:6, Esther 4:1—3
During these forty days of reflection, make an effort to look at the times you have hurt others and ask
God to forgive you, then think of a way you can act differently when you are tempted the next time.
If there is something you see that is unjust, think of something you can do to change the situation.
Even if it is just taking one bag of lunch to someone you know is hungry. You could also join one of
the many activities at Haven helping others, to make this a more just world.
These are just two ideas. I am sure you can think of many others.
I Wonder what you look forward to doing this Spring? Write about it or draw a
picture. Put your answer somewhere where you can see it often to remind you of
your WONDER-ful ideas!
