As I write this article, our COVID cases in Michigan are on the rise, the media has declared a new President Elect, the President is filing lawsuits claiming election fraud, and it is dark at 6:00 p.m. It is an odd confluence of events, but I have confidence we will get through this together. With record voter turnout, there remains a lot of division in our nation. As a poll watcher, I had a positive experience with the opposition party reviewing voters trying to cast their ballots. I felt that a lot of the animosity nationally was not reflected in this small local forum, the polling place. It is my hope that we will remind ourselves that as Ameri-cans we can come together for the common good.In writing this article, I decided to look at the historical events surrounding Hanukkah. Strangely, it seems that politi-cal and religious discord is not unique to 2020. Back in 165 BCE, you had Traditionalists, the Maccabees, being persecuted by Antiochus and the Seleucid Empire, intrigue with High Priests, Hellenists versus Traditional Jews, as-similation versus tradition, religious freedom versus intolerance, it’s all in there. As we celebrate Hanukkah, it is my

hope that as we strive to keep our Jewish traditions, we show tolerance for others of different faiths, races, and political beliefs. By doing that, I believe we can better understand the true meaning behind our celebration of Hanukkah. With so few opportunities to gather, please join us for Havdala and Hanukkah on Saturday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. We will light the menorah in the parking lot, enjoy hot chocolate and suf ganiyot, and listen to live music. It will be great.Keep safe and Happy Hanukkah,

Sisterhood & Men’s Club

Shalom Chaverim! We hope you are doing well. Thanks to all of you who already sent in your Sisterhood dues! Your support of Sisterhood allows us to be a gateway to connect members of our congregation. It is not too late to send in your dues and support your Sisterhood! You can submit your dues payment by mailing a check to the shul, attention Beth Ahm Sisterhood, or via Venmo or PayPal. If you have questions please reach out to us via the email address below.

On October 18, Sisterhood sponsored an exercise event via Zoom. It was an energizing way to start the New Year! We want to thank Shelley Rubinstein and Erica Gold-Spink for leading us in a great morning of exercise.

We also want to thank Sharona Shapiro for organizing an important event with Officer James Pettinato from the West Bloomfield Police Department on how to avoid scams. We all could use these reminders as the scammers are everywhere! And a big thank you to Officer Pettinato and the West Bloomfield Police Department for keeping our shul community safe.

We have a couple of unique virtual programs coming up this winter. We are teaming up with The Men’s Club for a night of comedy on January 21. We are also going to travel to Israel for a tour that will highlight the not so usual sights and sounds.

Please keep an eye out for information about Sisterhood’s third annual Purim fundraiser. This is our major fundraiser of the year, and we would love for this one to be the most successful yet! Your generosity has allowed Sisterhood to sponsor a fund to help Jewish youth attend Shabbatonim and other youth group events. Sisterhood also donates to Mazon in honor of every B’nai Mitzvah teen. These meaningful con-tributions could not happen without your support!

Your Sisterhood is always looking for new faces and fresh ideas. If you have a programming idea, please email us and let us know. Sisterhood is FOR YOU!

May you all stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,Marni Foster and Nancy [email protected]

Dear Friends,I hope your family is doing well during these unusual times.

Shortly after the pandemic began, we stopped using the synagogue building for daily minyan. We began gathering evenings, as well as Monday and Thursday mornings, through Zoom. While it does not allow for the same intimacy that being together in the Tauber Chapel does, it still allows us to stay connected to our Beth Ahm community. More importantly, it provides the opportunity for those who are observing the yahrzeit of a loved one to say Kaddish. To those of you who have been “zooming in,” I say “thank you.” If you have not been, give it a try. You will not even have to leave the comfort of your own home.

At some point, in-person davening will return to Tauber Chapel. When it does, my hope is that if you were a member of the minyan team prior to the pandemic, you will continue in that same role. If you had not been engaged before, I hope you will consider joining us.

If you have any questions about minyan, please contact me.

Remember, it’s not how often one comes to minyan, but that one makes the commitment.

Rabbi Steven [email protected]

2020 Counts TooA tradition like ours is prepared for anything and everything—even 2020.

I write this as we approach Parashat Toledot and the birth of Jacob. Even before his birth, Jacob’s life was unsettled. He and his twin, Esau, are already quarrelling in Rebecca’s womb. And in many respects Jacob’s life remains unsettled throughout. Near the end of his life, when he travels down to Egypt to be reunited with his son Joseph, Pharaoh inquires of Jacob’s age. He responds, ‘few and hard have been the years of my life.’ Our commentaries have much to say about Jacob’s response and I want to focus on just one. Sforno (Italy, 16th century) understands Jacob’s response this way – “years in which a person has major troubles do not even count as ‘years of his life’.”

I struggle with Jacob’s response and with Sforno’s comment. It feels alien to me to dismiss parts of our lives because there are difficulties. It feels ungrateful to reject parts of our lives, to not ‘count’ those days or years. But this year allows me to hear these comments differently than I did previously. I empathize with Jacob more than ever. I have seen many people joking about 2020---after all, joking can sometimes ease the pain. People wish we had gone from 2019

straight to 2021, skipping over the problems of this year. We have missed so much of what 2020 was envisioned to be that it doesn’t feel like the year happened at all; too many events missed - simchas, visits, meals, school days, summer plans, winter plans…. Of course, the flip side is true; we have very much lived through 2020.

Instead of dismissing these difficult days, here are a few ways we can respond to the challenges of this year and to what is still ahead:

Do GoodWe all know from experience the feeling that comes from helping others. When we respond to someone who needs our help, we dislodge our own troubles from our focus. Many people in our society need help on a variety of levels and if you are in a position to help, now is the time. They will benefit, and there is a side benefit to you as well in recognizing your ability to make change in a world which sometimes feels beyond your ability to impact.

RejoiceRebbe Nachman of Bretzlov was famous for his statement that ‘it is a great mitzva to always be happy.’ Rebbe Nachman was not Pollyannaish; he recognized the gloom that could drag us down because he seems to have had a tendency to experience it himself. The rejoicing that he encourages is thoughtful and intentional even in the face of challenge. He doesn’t ignore our pain; he reminds us to transform our pain into joy and happiness however we can – by recognizing blessings in our lives, by focusing our attention on the good, and even by silliness (something which he might not otherwise endorse, I suppose.) For us, we have the Festival of Hanuka coming up shortly. Even without all of the celebrations that we might normally be a part of, the holiday provides us with a great opportunity for happiness.

ConnectContinue to connect with the people in your life. You haven’t been doing much? Not much to report? That’s ok. Send emails, make phone calls, get on Facetime or Zoom. So many of us are realizing how much we depended on running into people at synagogue, in the school parking lot, at the grocery store. There are a lot of people we have not seen in months. Be in touch—it makes a difference in your life and in everyone’s life.

This year is a year that will be counted. You get to decide how to use the remaining days to shape it.
