This edition of the Hauraki News is little bit on the thin side., unfortunately my normal source of stories is not available. The articles from the Kia Kaha are out of sequence with our edition, so we are unable to include then. As the Hauraki News is the main means of communication with members it is essential it is kept to schedule, regarding the mailing out date.

Your committee has been continuing the task of building the Hauraki Museum, with the addition of another cabinet.

The Garrison is still opening every Friday, but the cash turnover is down from last year, due to the lower turnouts on Friday nights and the lower number of training weekends resulting in a subsequence smaller patronage. The Hauraki Battalion Group UPF had also ran the bar its self a couple of times.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Christmas Function at Daniels on Sunday 10 t h December. Do try and attend it's a great time to meet up with old friends.

Your committee has constructed another cabinet for museum displays. The cabinet was assembled in time for the Rhodesian Forces RV, held over the Labour Weekend. The Rhodesians used the cabinet to great effect to show of their memorabilia to their members.

They were impressed with the cabinet and have generously donated towards its cost.

The Cabinet will need slight modifications before it is filled with Hauraki memorabilia.

Tony Fraser has returned from a tour of military museums in the USA. Tony has gained many ideas that he can incorporate into our Hauraki Museum.

IIIIIIW Brian Schinkel has loaned to the Hauraki Museum a bayonet that his son found at Gallipoli, whilst on a recent tour. With Brian carpentry skills, he has turned a rusty old bayonet into an impressive display complete with New Zealand Ensign. Thanks Brian

"Redeye", Alan Reading has given more display pieces of his varied and colourful life, in particular his service with the US Marines, in the Islands, during WWII. His contributions including the United States Flag are on loan to the Hauraki Museum, and his family may wish to have them returned to their care at a later date.

SAS historian and archivist Wayne Holah visited the Garrison Club and Museum and put on a selection of SAS video pieces. He also has 17,000 photos from which he

was able to extract individuals or subjects of choice. For the number of members and friends who attended the evening it was a worthwhile evening. Some of us were able to see photos we had not previously seen.

The Rhodesians organised a BBQ for the evening, for which Bob Mankelow was the chief cook. A generous donation was give to the Association from all that attended the evening.

The video material included: Wm Waiouru and Malaya 1955/57 Thailand 1962 Memorial dedication 1984 Parachute Training Unit 2003

Marian has been busy placing historical photos and documents on to CD/DVD. Your committee has also had videos & photos placed onto DVD.

If you have some photos or videos you would allow the committee to place onto DVD, please contact me so I can arrange it. We are using a professional person for this task. Your photos or videos will not be damage and will be return ASAP.

Books, DVDs and videos have been donated to the Association. They are now in the new book case in the bar area. The books and video can be loaned out. Please sign in the book and please return when finished.

Marian has completed cataloguing the 58 x videos & 8 x DVD's and has nearly

If you would like to donate any videos, DVDs or books, please contact a committee member.

The Garrison Club depends up volunteers to operate. The Bar managers are Bob Mankelow, Marion Kareko, Hugh Bomford, Kevin Hayden & Des Anderson.

The Garrison Club without doubt has the lowest prices around. We believe that we are not there to make a large profit, but for the comradeship within the Hauraki family and friends.

With happy bar staff, cheap prices and a friendly atmosphere: all that is needed to complete the equation is YOU. The Garrison is open on Friday from 1600hrs. See you there.

To assist with compiling a notification list so you may wish to attend the "Last Post" of a fellow member or a "Hauraki", please forward your email your address to me. My system is a little out of date, 2002. Everyone seems to change email addresses on a regular basis. My email address is des.anderson(a)actrix.co.nz. Unfortunately we have missed notifying members in the past. A problem we have also experienced is being advised of the passing of a Member or a Hauraki in a timely manner. Please advise if you have information relating to any Members/Hauraki passing.

A SOLDIERS' CHRISTMAS!

T'was the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one bedroom house, made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney, with presents to give, And to see just who, in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight did I see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures, of far distance lands, With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, A sober thought, came through my mind. For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, I'd found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor, in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not how I pictured, a New Zealand soldier. Was this the hero, of whom I'd just read? Curled up in a poncho, the floor for a bed? I realised the families, that I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers, who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, the children would play, And grown ups would celebrate, a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed freedom, each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder, how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. The very thought brought, a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakened, and I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, this life is my choice; I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more;

Page 8: HAURAKI NEWS - tauranga.kete.net.nztauranga.kete.net.nz/documents/0000/0000/0499/No...24th Friday 1600 hrs Garrison Club Finger Food December ... life, in particular his service with

My life is my God, my country, my corps." The soldier rolled over, and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, And we both shivered, from the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave, on that cold, dark night, This guardian of honour, so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, Whispered, "Carry on Santa, it's Christmas day, all is secure." One look at my watch, and I knew he was right. "Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night."

Social Stories

A good muster at the Forta Lesa. Good food, good wine and good conversation. I was a little disappointed only one person ordered a chocolate dessert!

Everyone got picked up, so the transport system does work. Maybe the Secretary's influence had some thing to do with that!!

|News from the Regiment!

Major Roger Earp received a rare honour from the US Army when he was presented with the prestigious award of the Bronze Star, which recognises heroic or meritorious acts. The US Ambassador William McCormick, at a ceremony in Wellington, presented the medal.

He stated "In everything I hear about the tremendous work being done by the New Zealand Defence Forces, it is clear that the New Zealand troops have an extraordinary ability to establish relationships with the Afghan people". The Ambassador when on to say "I am reminded of the words of Abraham Lincoln when he said" I destroy my enemies by making them my friends."

Seventeen NZDF personnel were presented awards, for service in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
