Rabbi Cutler

Shalom

The high holiday reviews have been coming in over the past several weeks. It is almost like waiting for the

reviews from Variety after the opening of a show. As in years past, there are those who thought that the

choir was excellent and found them to be very inspiring and there were some who are not fans of choir mu-

sic and those who like the traditional type of chazzan. Some walked away from the service feeling very in-

spired and some thought the focus was too negative. There were some who thought my Kol Nidre sermon

was pessimistic and others who thought it offered a realistic assessment and challenge. There were some

who liked the cantorial soloist and others not so much. Many people found the discussions meaningful and

others thought it added time to the service. This sounds familiar. As many people have told me: “You can’t

always please everyone.” People’s response is based on individual tastes and where people are in their lives

at that moment.

Therefore, how does one define a successful high holiday service? This is something that has eluded me

since I was ordained as a rabbi. How does one define “success” in the context of a high holiday service?

The first question to ask is: What is the purpose of the high holiday service? The second question is tied to

the first: What is the criteria to determine a successful high holiday service? Is a successful high holiday

service driven solely by an individual’s satisfaction or is it determined communally? Is the high holiday

service tied into the mission and ideology of the congregation?

There are many purposes for a high holiday service. I would like to focus on one and how it relates to the

overall mission of Beth Israel. One of the main purposes of the high holiday service is to get as many con-

gregational members engaged in the service by getting individual congregants to participate in some aspect

of the high holiday service and events. Therefore, one of the markers of success is how many members of

Beth Israel participated. Stop and think for a moment how many people were involved with high holidays

in one form or another? I figured over 50 people. This is 50 plus people who gave of their time and energy.

I am not going to name individuals because I would forget to mention someone, but I will name the groups

of people who participated. First, were the members of the Sisterhood who cooked, baked and setup for the

kiddush luncheon and break-the-fast. Second, were members of the Men’s Club who did the physical labor

of setting up tables, removing the back panel of the sanctuary, building the choir loft and putting up and

taking down the Sukkah. Third, were the choir members and musicians who put in so many hours of prac-

tice every Wednesday. Fourth, were those who organized the tickets, gave out the honors, and did all the

administrative work. Fifth, were those who chanted and read Torah and haftarah and blew shofar. Sixth,

and not least, were the confirmation students who read Torah, and led parts of the service. I am especially

proud of them because of the time and commitment they put into the service. And because they now feel

part of the greater community of Beth Israel. It not only keeps them involved, it also makes them feel inte-

gral to the future of Beth Israel and the Jewish community and empowered as adult members of the com-

munity.

The sign of success is the number of volunteer hours that so many people gave to ensure the high holidays

services and events would happen. How many hours were volunteered? One cannot even begin to count.

We need to focus on so many people giving of their time, supporting these events, and supporting Beth Is-

rael. As expected, few people who attend services realize the massive amount of time and energy that it

takes to have high holiday services and events. Individuals gave their time and energy because of their

commitment and love for Beth Israel. In this light, as compared to previous years, I felt this year’s high

holiday season and events were successful because more people volunteered than in the past few years. The

result of this once-a-year event is that people are going to feel more inclined to be involved and invested in

Beth Israel in the coming year.

In time, people will forget what I spoke about on the high holidays but those who participated will not for-

get their experiences, and that is what is everlasting. They will feel positive about their involvement and

will want to make future commitments to the synagogue and to the Jewish community. This is one of the

major criteria that should be used to determine the “success” of the high holidays when over 50 plus people

gave of their time, effort and energy – volunteering --- to ensure that high holidays services and events

would take place. That is the mission of Beth Israel, to build community by having more and more lay in-

volvement and investment.

Shalom to you all.

How to donate to Beth Israel and save on tax expense

We want to inform you about how you can potentially save money twice on your federal taxes

while donating to Beth Israel. We have opened a brokerage account at Scottrade where you

can donate stock. By transferring your stock that has appreciated over time to our brokerage

account, you do not have to pay any capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation. If you

itemize deductions, you can also take the total value of the transfer as a charitable donation.

Depending on your tax bracket, this could be a substantial tax savings. One caveat is that the

stock must be held for more than one year. We hope that you will consider Beth Israel since it

is a win-win for all of us. Please contact Stuart Miller for details at [email protected]

Learn, Live, Teach Judaism………L’Dor va Dor. Last Sunday, the Halpern Lecture Series presented renowned political commentator, Michael Smerconish. His lecture, “Divided We Stand“, engaged the audience in a thoughtful consideration of the current political scene. Our thanks go to the committee for doing all the work necessary to present this lecture and to our benefactors, sponsors, and ticket purchasers who made this event possible. We are thrilled to announce that Cissie Halpern, of blessed memory, has ensured that we will be able to continue to present outstanding speakers by bequeathing to Beth Israel a substantial sum to fund a perpet-ual endowment for The William S. and Sylvia C. Lecture Series. Thank you to the Halpern family. Lesley, Edward, and Francine, you will always be part of the Beth Israel family. Welcome to our new members who have joined since the start of this fiscal year: Terry and Ony Myers; Kimberly Ticefelt; Margaret Coleman; Jason and Amanda Silverman; Erin and Jason Orso; David and Laney Spear; Leah and Stephen Schmidt, Barry and Sandy Milberg (who have returned as full members after be-ing associate members); Donn Selkowitz; Elisha and Todd Wolstenholme; Martin and Meg Schachter; Sara Glassman and Alex Friedman. At the Semi- Annual Congregation meeting in October, the Board of Directors authorized the establishment of a Capital Improvement Fund. It is our intention to pay for improvements to our building and grounds from a dedicated fund, rather than the operating budget. The surplus funds from the sanctuary carpet drive will be deposited into this account, as well as your ongoing contributions specifically designated for capital improvements. Please let us know what you think needs to be done. The Building committee will make recommendations to the Board. Rabbi Jon has invited all those interested in participating in a monthly “Conversation with the Rabbi” to join him to discuss current issues facing us as Jews. The first conversation will be on November 8, 2017, starting at 7:00p.m. The Interfaith Action Communities (Islamic Center of West Chester, Beth Israel, St. Elizabeth, St. Matthew, St. Paul and St. Andrew) has several projects: November 9 we have been invited to attend the Islamic Center of Chester County for a tour and program at 7 PM; December 7 we have been invited to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and we will be collecting school sup-plies for the children of Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico and assembling School Kits at St. Matthew's Church at 6:30 PM. More information on this is in the BIC5 article in this newsletter; January 11 we have been invited to attend St. Elizabeth for a tour and program;

In conjunction with Lionville YMCA, we will be looking at supporting the “Day of Dignity”, a program to go out into a local community to provide meals, clothing and medical needs to the homeless. We will be doing this with the Islamic Center and the churches. N’aseh v’Nishma…..We will do and we will hear.

SISTERHOOD SNIPPETS

Join Sisterhood: A Health Club For Your Soul

I’ve been reading about mind-body connections and the relationship between stress and disease. I have found out that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman and the best things a woman could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. Women connect with each other differently and they provide support systems that help deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physi-cally, this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin -- a neurotransmitter that helps combat de-pression and can create a general feeling of well-being. Women share feelings, whereas men often form relationships around activities. We share from our souls with our sisters/mothers/friends, and evidently that is very GOOD for our health. Spending time with a friend is just as im-portant to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym. There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged. In fact failure to create and maintain quality per-sonal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking. So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself or doing something good for your health! We are indeed very, very lucky to have our Sisterhood. We have developed wonderful relationships and we rel-

ish our time at our get-togethers at our homes or at our choice venues. We work together to provide for our syn-

agogue’s Oneg and Kiddush after Services, for our special New Year’s feasts and throughout the year for our Co-

hen Religious School. In our activities we come together to solve problems and deliver kindness and compassion

to our fellow congregants in need. We continue to educate ourselves through our book club and our adult educa-

tion offerings.

So... let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health! Be a part of Sisterhood and join in the many activities that will increase your well-being and the health of our synagogue. Let us know what interests you, and we will match you up with an activity that you will love. It’s time again to develop a new slate of officers for Sisterhood and this slate will be calling our members to find out where they fit in to work on our varied pro-grams. Please share your interests when you are called and please accept one of the many slots when you are asked. We need you to step up and come join us. Here’s to your good health! Sisterhood Notes:

Wednesday, 8 November, 5:00 pm - 9 pm: Join us at 5 pm for dinner and 6:30 for a movie, Dimona Twist, at the Phila-delphia Jewish Film Festival. RSVP to Maxine Endy at [email protected]. See enclosed flyer. Sunday, 19 November, 10 am: Breakfast with the Rabbi "We Are All Jew-ish Now!" Join us for this interesting discus-sion on the various types of Judiasm, such as secular, humanistic, African American, culural, and denominational. See enclosed flyer. Since we are in the month of November and gearing up for the holiday of Thanksgiving, here’s a side dish that will put a little Jewish spin on your Thanksgiving feast, and help you reinforce the Jewish value of wel-coming guests – hachnasat orchim, with some Jewish comfort food.

Mini Sweet Potato Knishes Makes 45–50 mini knishes (Pareve)

Ingredients

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons canola oil

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons tepid water

1½ teaspoons salt

2½ cups all-purpose flour

3 large sweet potatoes or yams, peeled and cut into 2” pieces

4 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped

½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

½ teaspoon garlic powder

1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water

Mustard or horseradish sauce, for dipping

1. Preheat the oven to 400° F. In a medium bowl, combine ½ cup oil, water, and 1 teaspoon of the salt.

Mix in 1½ cups of flour. Gradually mix in the remaining 1 cup of flour to make a soft dough that pulls

away from the sides of the bowl. Shape into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest at room tem-

perature (do not refrigerate) for at least 30 minutes.

2. In the meantime, toss the sweet potatoes and garlic with the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a

roasting or casserole pan, and roast for 35–40 minutes, or until the garlic is golden brown and the

sweet potatoes are fork tender.

3. Mash the sweet potatoes and garlic with a fork or potato masher. Season the mashed sweet potatoes

with the remaining ½ teaspoon salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

4. Lower the oven temperature to 375° F. On a floured surface, thinly roll out the dough (about 1/8" thick). The dough will be slightly stretchy, so use some elbow grease when rolling. Using the rim of a large drinking glass, or a round 3” cookie cutter, cut out circles from the dough. Collect the scraps, combine, and re-roll them to use up all the dough.

5. Spoon 1 heaping tablespoon of the sweet potato filling into the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges together around the filling and pinch closed to form a purse. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough and filling.

6. Evenly space the knishes on two greased baking sheets. Whisk together the beaten egg and wa-

ter in a small bowl, and brush the knishes lightly with this egg wash. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm with the mustard or horseradish sauce.

always been your Men’s Club’ –(you just didn’t know it !)

We are proud and happy to be of service to the congregation, but we would like to do more social, education and

family activities and become a more active Men’s Club. We especially need more members who are interested in be-

coming more involved with leadership of the Men’s Club

There are still many synagogue members that have not participated in any Men’s Club events if not, why not ? Please

feel free to let us know what you are interested in.

Preschool & Kindergarten News

Adrianne Liebman

Do you ever find yourself moving through each day and forgetting to really think and be mindful about your surroundings? Do you take things for granted? Life is busy and we have a funny way of allowing this to happen. Hakarat Hatov--- the act of gratitude is so important. It is not just about saying thank you, more importantly, about recognizing your surroundings and the people who are in your lives and developing an attitude of gratitude. I have been told that in Judaism, there are 100 blessings per day that one should recite about things that we recognize in our surroundings and for which we are grate-ful. For example, each morning, are you grateful that you are able to move around without difficulty or pain? Do you recognize and feel grateful that there is food in your refrigerator? Do you feel grateful that the sun is shining or your grass looks beautiful? So how do we model this for the children? It is im-portant to label the value/feeling throughout the day, by mentioning Hakarat Hatov, I am so grateful that I am seeing the sun shine today. If this becomes part of our daily dialog, it becomes innate. Some people keep gratitude journals. If a child is too young to write, he/she can draw a picture in their jour-nal. This can also become a part of your dinner conversation. Have you ever played, roses and thorns? My rose today was being able to go to the zoo and see the giraffes. My thorn today was that we had to leave the zoo. This has the potential to change your frame of reference for the day and your mood.

When we start young, it becomes a part of who we are. How healthy and positive it would be to under-

stand from a young age that we are thankful for those around us and our surroundings ( it is not just

about the “stuff”). Yes, this is a lofty goal, but one worth striving toward. We have discussed this

amongst the Staff and we will try our best, to mention our gratitude aloud to the children. Modeling is

such a powerful way to teach. Perhaps you will choose to start your day with some things you are grate-

ful for each day.

Beth Israel is Participating in an Interfaith Effort

Collecting School Kits for Disaster Relief

Beth Israel BIC5 is collaborating with our partners in the Interfaith Action Communities to create “school kits” that will

be used for US disaster relief. Each faith organization in the Interfaith Action Community (including Beth Israel Syna-

gogue) will collect enough specific school material to create 20 “school kits” each. We are asking all interested Beth

Israel families to contribute the specific materials for this. Please read the materials list below.

Starting now until the end of November you can deliver your contribution of materials to the Beth Israel BIC5 collection

box located in the hallway outside of Rabbi’s office. We will post our progress of collected materials on the box so that

you will know what is still needed.

We will deliver these to St. Matthews Lutheran Church and will assemble the kits there on the evening of Dec. 7. All of

the kits will be then delivered to the church network of Relief Supply Storage locations. Ultimately these school kits

will be given to schools and families who are in need due to disasters such as the recent hurricanes that have hit com-

munities in the southern U.S.

THANK YOU!

Alexis Dubrow Bat Mitzvah

Alexis Samantha Dubrow, daughter of Adam and Aviva Dubrow, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on December 2, 2017 As a 7th grader at Lionville Middle School, Alexis has become involved in many activities and is enjoying each

and every one. She is part of 7th grade chorus and vocal ensemble and is hoping to have a role in the school

performance of My Fair Lady. To further her love of singing she is taking lessons and hopes to do more sing-

ing as time goes on. At the end of the summer she was awarded a purple belt in Karate for her many years

of attendance and assistance with the summer camp.

Her concern for helping others has spilled over to her Mitzvah project. She has organized a book drive to

benefit the students of Franklin Elementary School in Pottstown, where she is spending time reading to Ms.

Evelyne’s Kindergarten class. This book drive has yielded a bounty of books that will provide the deserving

kids of this school hours of reading enjoyment.

Besides her love of singing, Alexis enjoys spending time with her beloved Paco, hanging out with her friends,

art, and playing games with her sister and parents.

We are thrilled to have reached this day and can’t wait to celebrate this special milestone with everyone.

Mazel Tov and we love you so much,

Mom, Dad, and Alyssa
