WORD HAS IT… From Your Library

The Holiday Season; that wonderful time when families push aside differences and bestow love and warmth on one another. This can be shown in the form of a quick visit Christmas Eve at Grandma’s house. Maybe it shows when more family members start to fill up the pews in church. Even Grumpy Uncle George brings presents for the wee ones in the family. How about Cousin Alice bringing over one of her special apple pies. Teenager Maryanne offers to babysit while mom goes shopping. The kids all try to behave so much better in case the elves are peeking in the window. Families, a wonderful assemblage. Have you considered starting a new tradition in your family for the holidays? If you are looking for ideas, stop in The McNeeley Library and do a bit of research on the traditions carried out in Ireland. Ask our librarians what is available. Some of the old traditions performed without the aid of electronics just might be the most fun and interesting for your family. I would suggest you look in the 390 Section - Folklore, Customs, Holidays. There is:

“A Celtic Christmas” by Mairtin O’Griofa “An Irish Country Christmas” by Alice Taylor

“Christmas in Ireland” World Book Encyclopedia I am sure there are more if you look further.

NOTE:The McNeeley Library has their Cookbook, “MEALS & MEMORIES” available to purchase at many of the events at the Club, Contact Annie O’Donnell or any Librarian. Great gift item.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from ~ Rose Conley and the McNeely Library Committee

Mary Lou McNally For the hard work you took on to maintain the

pump house garden for the past several years.

Ross Bassett & Mike McGuire

Thank you for your service: As Trustees for the past several years you have been instrumental in maintaining our facility. Your dedication to the Club and its environs has been truly remarkable. Thank you both for all you have done to keep WSIA moving forward.

“I think I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.” (Joyce Kilmer)

Trees are one of natures greatest gifts. They clean the air, provide shelter, keep us cool in summer, drape themselves in brilliant colors in the fall. We lose a few every year due to age or storms. We will be planting trees to keep our grounds looking their best. If you are interested in dedicating a tree in memory or honor of a loved one, please call John O’Brien at 216-375-2890 for more information.

The Cleveland Ceili Club promotes the musical traditions of Ireland by providing opportunities for adults to enjoy traditional Irish music and dance.

Mary Lowry & Anne Neligan

Our History 1980 to 1985 - 2nd Edition By Peggy Calvey Patton

During the cold grey days of the winter’s new year, Sunday afternoons should be mandatory at the club. The

days are short, the roads are miserable, we are always cold and everyone has the winter blues. The cursed Irish melancholy is thriving. Come on out to the Olmsted grounds. The gardens are covered in snow and the little cottage out by the lake will bring back memories of Ireland. The fire will be lit in the pub and the front hall will be adrift with music and kids. St. Patrick’s Day, they will be marching in full uniform to “Gerry Owen” and other rousing Irish marching songs.

Don’t forget to enroll all the kids in your extended family for the parade. It is important they learn about Irish heritage and traditions and the pride we have for this holiday. Kids don’t have to be Irish to be in the parade, everyone is welcome and we all will be richer for the experience. When the marchers parade to the fife and drum, it is akin to a tradition still practiced in the old country and we should endeavor to carry it on in this country.

March 17th the parade will once again begin with Ellen Stall’s “the Little Bridgies”, an adorable collection of the youngest marchers. The 4 and 5-year-old girls steal the show and your hearts. Next come the WSIA Majorettes and Flag units. These girls can be 6 to 11 years old. It’s amazing how much they improve during the practice months and many of them form lifelong friendships. The Kilbane sisters Nancy and Maurita ran this unit for virtually all the 1960’s and most of the 1970’s.

In November of 1973, Gerry Lavelle, the club’s president at that time, proposed the creation of the “pom-pom” unit because there were too many majorettes. These girls range in age from around 11 to 15. They were an incredible show; precision marching and concise arm movements with their pom-poms. Eileen Stull was their leader for 15 years and now Patti Hanrahan, Heather Harvey and Kristi Cruz manage them along with the volunteer help of many former marchers.

The Ladies Drill team was formed by the late great Coletta Masterson Jablonski. She was the first female admitted to the all-male marching unit and believed women should have a larger part in the parade. She formed the women’s drill team and led it for twenty years. She liked to brag “The Ladies Drill Team never missed a parade, no matter what the weather was like”. This “Grande Dame” of the club also started the “Forever Young “ group many years later. I was lucky enough to know her.

In the late 1940’s a person, that by many accounts wasn’t Irish, took over. Her name was Betty James, a professional Majorette recruited by club member Bill Dvorak. She installed powerful marching ideals for the WSIA that continue today. After she stepped down in the late 1950’s, she was replaced by Mary Colleta Mackin, Bridget O’Donnell and Margaret McIntyre, and of course Mary McCluskey who was formally appointed in 1975 after leading the Ladies Drill for several years. Mary just retired after forty some years as major domo and will be replaced by her daughter.

With the move to Olmsted Twp. the Ladies Drill team dropped to less than a dozen. When I suggested to my friends, Maryann & Kathy Kilbane, Kathy Berry, Mary Keane, Joan O’Donnel, Eileen McIllwee and Nancy Wagner that we should join the drill team, they said no way because it was a “debutant group” of late teens and early twenty somethings. My answer: “Look, we beat a blank space and from twenty feet away and in the Aer Lingus uniforms, we could pull it off.”

That was the start of a great experience. Our drill team was a wonderful mix of women in their late forties and the high school girls. They had acne and we found our first grey hair, they worried about grades and boys and we took our first ocean cruise. They talked of going away to colleges and we became empty nesters. It became a wonderful blending of different generations.

Where are those teens from the early 1980’s today? The WSIA Club would love to see you!

The feeling of Irish pride marching down the center aisle of St. Colman’s Church to the booming fife and drums, and the bagpipes can’t be described. The parade makes you feel like a celebrity, cold weather, rain and snow just don’t matter, we loved the cheers and waves and the big Irish smiles that beamed at us. We stayed in the drill team for several years until there was a waiting list and then we passed our uniforms on to the new marchers, but I wouldn’t trade those Sunday afternoons for a million bucks.

Erin Go Braugh!

Here is your chance to demonstrate an act of kindness.

There are a number of current and former senior WSIA Members, who are unable to attend WSIA functions due to their age and/or disabilities. Maybe you would like to pick them up and bring them to a general meeting, or a concert, or bring them to the club on a Friday for some pub grub. Maybe you can just pay a visit and spend a little time with them. Whatever the case may be, if you are interested in giving a little of your time you will find it to be a time not wasted. Acts of kindness are a life-changing blessing.

Please contact Helen Malloy at 216-251-4075

Thank you to everyone who either dropped off or had bikes picked up at your home. There are many young boys and girls who are very happy that you did. The AT&T Pioneers have a program to repair bikes in order to return them to good condition. These like new bikes are then given to kids who have shown they are good citizens in their communities, achieve good grades and have an excellent attendance record. Needless to say, they are delighted with their bikes.

Thanks to Steve Pevec, AT&T Pioneer, he picks up bikes at the I-A and from homes in surrounding areas. A special thank you to Carol Andrews, an I-A member, who asked everyone she knew if they had a bike they weren’t using to be donated for this great cause. Carol has donated 47 plus bikes! Another one of our I-A good citizens. If you are unable to drop off a bike at the I-A, please contact Josephine Caffrey at 440-333-4992 and arrangements will be made to pickup the bike at your home.
