HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM CREATIVE PORTLAND
Jason Spooner, for designing our HEAR, HERE logo and webpage; andMayor Ethan Strimling, for joining the Creative Portland Board of Directors.
January in Maine launches a special year for women in the arts! With Janet Mills, the first woman governor of Maine, being sworn in on the 2nd, and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree serving as co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, the arts community has something to cheer about! Along with Julie Richard, MAC Director, who continually champions increased visibility and arts recognition, we have an opportunity to leverage even more investment in

the arts. Here’s some exciting news worth shouting out: women are basically running Portland’s cultural life! We’ve come a long way, baby (don’t worry, we love you too, Mark, Steve, Grant, Daniel, Ken, Derek, Chris & Jed).
We not only celebrate the historic centennial of suffrage next Fall, but we have a viable opportunity to build and brand Portland as a major arts hub of New England. We are already responsible for over $75 million in expenditures in the nonprofit arts & culture sector alone. That’s a significant industry - and it’s half of the state’s overall $150 million in nonprofit arts impact, according to Americans for the Arts' AEP5 study from 2017. It’s time to spread that buzz right here in Portland. Let’s celebrate our vibrant circle of women artists, executive directors, managers, and other creative leaders and entrepreneurs who make a huge impact in our creative economy through the arts.
On behalf of the arts and cultural community, let’s give a special shout out to all women who tirelessly, creatively, and graciously contribute buckets of love and art into our lives!
- Dinah Minot, Executive Director
