Formal and Informal writing

What can you remember about the features of either formal or informal writing?

As a class, discuss and edit this letter extract from it’s informal tone into a formal one.

Hey mate,

The Oasis is sick! Last time me and my old man went we went down all the slides and stuff and it was so fun! My brother was like, screaming as he went down haha! I bet you’d love it there but its a real shame that they’re closing it and stuff. If I was the boss id keep the place open.

See you later - Mr H

2 - 3 Chilli - convert this informal letter into a formal one.To the holiday people,

I reckon I should write to you because the holiday we had with you was rubbish. When we got there, we had to wait AGES for our caravan to be ready. When it was ready it was chilly and pretty grim. There was green stuff in the sink and everything.

When we went to bed, the bed was well uncomfortable and one of the kids decided to sleep on the floor! Can you imagine that!

When I went to reception the next day, the lady was well rude and I found her really annoying. Please can you fire her.

Anyways, you get the point that I am annoyed with you and you need to fix it.

Cheers,

Maths…

Today we are consolidating our knowledge that we have covered this week:- Regular and irregular polygons - Identifying 3D shapes- Identifying 3D shapes from 2D representations (nets)- Finding the perimeter of shapes and composite rectilinear shapes - Problem solving using shape knowledge

You are going to be creating a leaflet for next year’s year 5’s explaining the above topics! The next few slides recap that information but PLEASE revisit the slides from earlier on in the week to help you!

Maths recap… A regular polygon is… a shape which has all equal sides and angles.

An irregular polygon is…

3D shapes can be represented in a 2D way called nets.

You can discuss 3D shapes by describing the number of edges, vertices and faces that they have.

Maths…

Your leaflet should have the following subheadings: 1. Regular and irregular polygons 2. 3D shapes - what are they?3. 3D shapes in 2D form - shape nets!4. Perimeter of rectangles5. Perimeter of rectilinear composite shapes3 chilli/EXT: create questions for each section to test your readers knowledge. Think carefully about what your reader needs to know. What is the key information. Are there any key terms you may need to define? Use lots of diagrams to help explain your ideas!

Use the videos and slide information from earlier in the week to help you!

There are some great videos and info you can magpie from!
