Health Matters: Tell It to Your Heart

As we age, we find ourselves continuing to look for ways to keep our precious ticker happy. This is a wise venture since heart disease claims the lives of 1 in every 4 of us in the U. S. each year. So can we make a difference in our heart health? Absolutely! Here are some important tips to keep in mind.

Work to Maintain a Healthy Weight For good weight management, it’s important that you eat more nutrient rich foods.

-Enjoy your favorite fresh fruits and vegetables. -Add in whole grains more frequently. -Include omega 3 rich fatty acids on your menu. Omega 3 foods like flaxseed and winter squash are thought to provide defense for the heart and arteries. -Portion down your unhealthy fats and junk food. The key is to avoid foods that cause inflammation. Some good news: Small quantities of red wine and dark chocolate contain ingredients that can protect the arteries and reduce heart disease. Green and black teas contain flavinols which are also good for the heart.

One Word: Exercise Your heart needs it. Particularly endurance or “cardio” exercises is recommended for a healthy heart. Cardio work keeps your heart and breathing rates elevated for a sustained period of time. Check with your doctor to decide the best approach.

Emotional Health Studies have shown that chronic irritation, stress and fear can lead to heart problems. Three things can help outwit the troubled heart: -Attitude of Gratitude. A regular reminder to yourself about all the things you are grateful for and creating a list of simple things you really appreciate can regulate your heartbeat to a smoother rhythm. -Laughter! Stimulate laughter by nurturing your sense of humor and find friends who can trigger your giggles. -Connect with others. Find a group or class with similar interests as yours, get out or reconnect with an old friend. A lighter heart is a healthier one.

Get Your Sleep The ideal amount of sleep is 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to lower your risk for heart disease. En-courage a good night’s sleep by exercise during the day, keep a regular sleeping schedule, and avoid any electron-ic screens just before bedtime.

Good habits can counter the idea that simply aging af-

fects the cardiovascular system negatively. Utilize these

tips and make a new commitment to your heart.

Hospital Regulations Hospital rules state that patients checking out must have a wheelchair. One day a newly graduated nurse assistant came into the room to find an elderly man fully dressed. He was sitting on the bedside chair, with a piece of packed luggage at his side, all ready to go. When he was shown the wheelchair, he was adamant that he was fully capable of walking himself to the parking lot. But the assistant told him rules were rules, so he relented and let her wheel him out. In the elevator, the assistant asked the elderly man if his wife was coming to meet him. “I don’t think so,” he replied. “It takes her awhile to change her clothes, so she’s probably still upstairs in the bathroom taking off her hospital gown and getting dressed.

Pet Parrot A man buys a pet parrot and brings him home. But the parrot start insulting him and gets really nasty, so the man picks up the parrot and tosses him into the freezer to teach him a lesson. He hears the bird squawking for a few minutes, but all of a sudden the parrot is quiet. The man opens the freezer door, the parrot walks out, looks up at him and says, “I apologize for offending you and I humbly ask your forgiveness.” The man replies, “well, thank you. I forgive you.” The parrot then says, “ if you don’t mind my asking, what did the turkey do?”

Mathematical Paradoxes

Teacher Arrested at JFK Boarding plane for carrying ruler, protractor, compass, slide ruler and calculator. Accused of being part of the Al Gebra movement and carrying weapons of Math Instruction. Al Gebra is said to be a problem for FBI. They devise solutions by means and extremes and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code names like x and y and refer to themselves as “unknowns”. FBI determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis and go medieval with coordinates in any country. As the Greek philosopher Isosceles use to say, “there are 3 sides to every triangle.” The Attorney General said “teaching our children sentient through processes and equipping them to solve problems is dangerous and puts our governments at risk!

Dreams for a New Year!!

If only on this New Year’s Eve

We could turn a page

And find a bright and peaceful world

Without a trace of rage.

A world where children everywhere

Could learn civility,

And never have to turn their minds

To lethal capability.

Where every person in the world could follow

his ambition

In Universal harmony,

Instead of competition.

Alas, mankind has not yet learned

To be and let to be,

But Hope lives on courageously,

And starts with you and me.

You rarely see Mitzi Cohn without her “kids”, Lou and Sade. They are outside for their daily constitutionals. If you find her dogs fascinating, wait till you meet Mitzi. Born and raised in San Francisco, Mitzi has many stories of her childhood. One of her favorite memories is being able to go downtown San Francisco without her parents. Of course she needed to dress up for the occasion, including her Mary Janes, gloves and hat. She lived in an interesting neighborhood where Joe DiMaggio grew up and would come back to play basketball with the kids, Mitzi’s brother being one of them and of course Mitzi tagged along and played as well. Her grammar school was Winfield Scott. One of her classmate’s father was an executive for Standard Oil. She will never forget the time the king of Saudi Arabia and his son came to visit the school. No one was allowed to touch them and the visit was very formal. Love came her way when she went on a blind date with Irwin Cohn. They met in March and were wed in November. When they bought a home in Marin County they got their first dog, a basset hound. This is when her love of dogs began. Her family has had a variety of dogs for the last 50 years. Her current puppy dogs help keep her busy. When Courtyard begins the weekly walks in March, Sadie, Lou and Mitzi are the first on and off the bus ready to go for a Park walk.
