On Thursday 25 October, 12 Walcha Central School students, 9 steers,1 heifer and 2 truck loads of equipment travelled to White Park, Scone for the 2018 Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza. Students spent four busy days participating in educational workshops, meat judging competitions, junior judging competitions, beef parading competitions and the hoof component of hoof and hook competitions. Fabulous results were achieved by all students who attended. Year 10 student Hannah Dunn led her heifer, Willow, to 4th place in the hoof competition and placed 2nd in her paraders class. Year 9 students Abbey Mackaway and Olivia Bruce placed 1st and 2nd respectively in their paraders class. Abbey’s win resulted in her competing in the finals where she placed 3rd from well over one hundred entries. Sophie Worth, also in Year 9, placed 5th in her paraders class as well as placing 3rd in the junior judging competition from well over 100 entries. In the Year 8 paraders class, Lillie Chenoweth placed 4th and Jessica Wake placed 1st which resulted in Jess competing in the paraders final. Our youngest livestock team members were not to be outdone in the paraders class with Timothy Aspinall placing 4th, Marlee Wall placing 3rd and Olivia Haslem being presented a highly commended award. Walcha Central would like to thank both the parents and community members who continue to support our livestock team with time, expertise and livestock donations. Without your help, attendance and success at these events would not be possible. Also a big thank you to the students in the livestock team; the hard work, dedication, sportsmanship and team spirit that each of you displayed is to be commended. walchacentralschool A JOURNEY OF LEARNING FROM K TO 12 HAPPY AND SAFE STUDENTS 16 November 2018 NEWS AND VIEWS OF YOUR LOCAL CENTRAL SCHOOL K-12 NEWSLETTER WALCHA CENTRAL SCHOOL 154E North Street Ph: 02 67772777 WALCHA NSW 2354 Fax: 02 67771009 PRINCIPAL: Mr Mark Hall P&C School Pesident: Mr Cameron Hayton Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.walcha-c.school.nsw.gov.au CANTEEN ROSTER - Week 6 Term 4, 2018 19/11/18 Yr 11/12 Hospitality 20/11/18 Yr 11/12 Hospitality 21/11/18 C Overton R Smith I Hayton 22/11/18 Kylie Dunn 23/11/18 Yr 11/12 Hospitality UPPER HUNTER BEEF BONANZA Samantha Reeves

Albert Einstein claimed that he never taught his students. Instead, he attempted to ‘provide the conditions in which they learn.’ This statement is complemented by what you will read about in this edition of our school newsletter. Learning is no longer confined to the four walls of a classroom. Students can learn anywhere and at any time.

At Walcha Central School, we are proud to provide all of our students with not only diverse learning locations and situations but also opportunities.

Some of these include:

Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza

I had the pleasure of being able to attend the final day of the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza. The students, ably prepared by Mrs Reeves and supported by a team of generous and enthusiastic parents, were not only excellent ambassadors for our school but also achieved excellent results against some very stiff competition.

Canberra Excursion

In Week 4, students from Years 5 and 6 journeyed to Canberra for a week of learning in our nation’s capital. This has complemented their classwork on democracy and how our political system works.

Thanks to Mrs Watkins for organising such a valuable learning experience and to Miss Lawrence and Mr Williams who also attended. Also, a thank you to the parent volunteers who made this excursion possible.

Musica Viva

On Friday 26 October 2018, students from Years K-8 experienced Water, Water, Everywhere on behalf of Musica Viva in Schools. The performance was based on music by the Grammy Award-winning composer Tan Dun. This was an exciting cultural event for students and enhanced the student’s appreciation of music.

Year 1 Awareness Day

Students in class 1M held a Hug-a-Bear day on Wednesday 7 November 2018.

They chose Hug-a-Bear Day as they love having their bears with them at school and at home.

It is great to see our students always thinking of others through causes that promote wellbeing.

New Timetable-Secondary

Don’t forget that in Week 6, all secondary students will have a new timetable as they begin a new academic year.

Student success

Congratulations to all students who have represented the school at various events this term. We have achieved some excellent results and our students continue to represent the school capably and are a credit to their school, families and community.

Details of these achievements have been included in this edition of the newsletter.

As you already know, there is always something amazing and worth celebrating at Walcha Central School. This is just a taste of the many opportunities offered in our school and rest assured that there will be plenty more to come in the future.

In Week 4, 45 Stage 3 students made the long trip to Australia’s capital city, Canberra. Students had the opportunity to see many of

Canberra’s amazing attractions including: Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Mt Ainslie lookout, National Museum of Australia, High Court, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport and the Royal Mint.

Students are congratulated for their participation throughout the week. A huge thankyou also to our 2 volunteers who attended the excursion, Pam Makeham and Matt Andrews.

K-12 NEWSLETTER 16 November 2018

On Thursday 18 October, 30 students from Years 5 and 6 attended the Far Out Science day in Tamworth developed by the University of New England and the National Museum.

Students had a great time testing their physical abilities

with the UNE sports faculty, exploring mammals and electricity, seeing some amazing chemical reactions and catching, examining and classifying the pollinating bugs at Centennial Park.

We got very wet on one of our transitions to the town hall, but students were just so happy to see the rain that they cheered as they made their way along the whole length of Fitzroy Street!

On Friday 19 October, students in Years 3 and 4 attended the Big Bad Wolf performance at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC).

This performance was based on a modern fairy tale of friendship that explored what it’s like to be misunderstood and a little bit different. Students enjoyed the opportunity to see a performance live on stage with three people playing a range of characters.

Back to School Stationery

Requirements 2019

Students have been given a list of back-to-school

stationery requirements for 2019 as well as an order

form and price list for Walcha Newsagency for these

items. These lists can also be found on our school

website.

Please note that due to the compressed curriculum,

students in Years 7-12 will commence their subjects

for 2019 in Week 6, Term 4, 2018 and therefore will

need to have their required book packs and

stationery by Monday 19 November 2018.

K-6 will require their books at the beginning of

2019.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Students from our school are currently undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be participating in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

eGATS Celebration Day This year, 8 students from Walcha Central School in Years 5 and 6 participated in the electronic gifted and talented program (eGATs).

The following students attended a celebration day at Thalgarrah Environmental Centre where they presented their projects to an appreciative audience as well as participated in extension activities: Ali Nivison, Charlotte Overton, Sariann Andrews, Harriet Crawford, Emily Blake, Ali Kealy, Samuel Swain and Jemma Warden.

The students were great ambassadors for the school and gained valuable experiences in setting goals and working towards academic excellence.

The wellbeing team are proud to open the new wellbeing room, aptly named by students as the ‘Home Zone’.

This room is designed as a space where students can go if they feel they need some time to chill or to study. It is also a space where small group activities and programs will run. The chaplain and youth support officer will also be utilising this space to do their planning.

Hug-a-Bear

Day

Year 1’s awareness day was Hug-a-Bear Day. The

children wanted to celebrate their furry, cuddly friends.

My class are constantly bringing in a soft friend to

cuddle and play with and this day seemed to be

designed for them.

On Wednesday 7 November, students in Years K-6

were invited to bring a teddy bear to school and join

with Year 1 for a teddy bear’s picnic in the playground

at lunch.
