Union Point Class of 1956 Miss Lyrric Jackson, graduating Senior of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia was listed along with the faculty as a Choreographer during the 2013 Spring Concert. She designed a piece entitled "Drowning Under Me" for solo dancer, Jeremiah Thompson of Morehouse College. The composers chosen by Miss Jackson were Isan, "Cathart", John Baj, "Abstract Drowning", Thao Nguyen Xanh, "Sad Romance" and her own composition, "Forever Vortex". This work was Miss Jackson's Choreography II Course Senior Thesis. She also performed in the work choreographed by Professor Kathleen Wessel entitled, "Surface Tension". The composers were: Ezio Basso, "Before 6", and "Last Breath" and Spelman College Dance Theater Spring Concert and Awards Banquet PilotX, "Nine Solos". Other danc- ers included in Professor Wessel's piece were Brianna Harris, Devon Johnson and Peyton Johnson. On May 4, 2013 the Spelman College Spriggs-Burroughs Drama and Dance Awards Banquet was held in the Upper Manley Hall Atrium on campus. Miss Jackson was selected as the recipient of the 2013 "Outstanding Achievement in Dance" award for the entire department. She served as President of the Dance Depart- ment during her Senior year and produced the show for the evening entitled "All That" that featured the Freshmen class of Spelman and Morehouse College. Her parents, brothers and friends were in atten- dance to support her for the evening. It is a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities. This year’s Older Americans Month theme—”Unleash the Power of Age!”— emphasizes the important role of older adults. This May, communities across the nation will recognize older Americans as productive, active, and influential members of society. Older Americans Month celebrations will acknowledge the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities by making an effort to applaud recent achievements of local elders and inviting them to share the activities they do to unleash the power of age. The Greene County Senior Center encourages you to take part in the celebrations by sharing your Older Americans Month resolutions with the U.S. Administration on Aging. While the Greene County Senior Center provides services, support, and resources to older Older Americans Month 2013 Unleash the Power of Age! Chilly damp weather greeted us the month of May here in the Lake Country as umbrellas and sweaters took precedence over sundresses and sandals. Contrary to the weather ~ OPAS brightened our first May weekend at Eatonton’s Arts Plaza by giving us the fabulous “Almost Elton John”, on Friday evening and following up with, “Best Little Theater in Town” (featuring local talented teens) on Saturday. And ~ there is more to come as the month goes on. Greene County Players are back at Festival Hall in Greensboro once again ~ this time with the Southern- fried comedy, “The Red Velvet Cake War”. The plot revolves around the upcoming Verdeen family reunion. The younger generation’s outrageous antics have delighted local gossips of Sweetgum, and the eyes of Texas are upon them. Add to the mix, a one-eyed suitor, a tornado and a red velvet cake contest and you have the makings of one hilariously funny and enjoyable evening! Opening night ticket holders will be treated to a wine and cheese reception following the play. May 16, 17, 18, at 7 pm and a Sunday matinee May 19 at 2:30 pm. Tickets ~ $15 & $20 ~ 762-243- 8072. The city of Eatonton invites you to celebrate Patriotism with a Pre Memorial Day Celebration, May 23 on the Courthouse lawn. The celebration will include the Middle School Choir, High School Jazz Band and children’s activities (a clown and face painting). Come join the community at 5:30 pm in paying tribute to Putnam County Veterans. Eatonton’s Plaza Arts Center presents, “Billy Dean and his Guitar” at 7 pm, May 31, (on the lawn rain or shine). Billy Dean, an American country music singer and songwriter first gained national attention after appearing on Star Search. His studio albums have accounted for more than twenty hit singles on the Billboard country charts, including eleven Top Ten hits. Bring along your chairs and picnic baskets (or, enjoy a BBQ basket from GA Butts for only $5!). Tickets $35, children free. 706-923-1655. Madison is alive with music this month. Gazebo Groves, is an every Friday afternoon event in Town Park. Bring your lunch, sit in the sun and enjoy a Free concert from noon until 1pm. The evening of May 23 brings yet another Free concert with the talents of our Lake Country’s own, Pullin’ Strings to entertain you from 7- 9pm. Down Town Dance, on May 17, will have you dancing in the Park after dark to the melodies of J. Scott Thompson & Peachtree Station from 7:30-9:30pm. A $5 ticket will get you an enchanted evening under the stars. 706-342-1251 x208. The 11th Annual Madison Chamber Music Festival begins on May 21 and runs through June 16. Venues include Burge Plantation, Steffen Thomas Museum, Town 220 Restaurant and the Madison Morgan Culture Center Auditorium. Town 220 opens the season with a dinner/concert on May 21 with, Time for Three, the world’s first classically trained garage band. These versatile string players perform everything from Bach and Brahms to bluegrass and the Beatles. They’ve played Carnegie Hall, jazz clubs and in Europe. Dinner at 6pm, concert at 7:30. Doors open at 6 pm for concert ticket holders only (dinner reservations through Town 220 required – call 706-752-1445. Dinner not included in ticket price). Tickets: $25. The festival series continues with, Come to the Cabaret, starring two- time Grammy Award winner, Sylvia McNair, on stage at the Madison Morgan Cultural Center. Her renditions of Gershwin, Porter, Sondheim and Bernstein will give you the thrill of Broadway right here in Georgia’s Lake Country. May 31 at 7:30 pm. Tickets: $30/$5 for students. Sorrow prevailed over our town at the sad news of the sudden death of Mrs. W.R. Callaway, Monday evening at Emory University Hospital in At- lanta. Mrs. Callaway, the former Miss Ann Rhodes, was blessed with a charming personality, a friendly dis- position and attractive manner. Her five lovely children will serve as a memorial to the useful, worthwhile life she lived. Meet Penny! This face has trouble written all over it, but Penny is an absolute doll!
