Happisburgh News
Dear Parents / Carers,
I hope you have all had a lovely term and the children are well-rested and ready for the next few weeks of learning as we head towards the Christmas Break. This month has been filled with many exciting classroom activities including Horse Chestnut’s moving vehicles and Silver Birch’s bread - making, which you can read about overleaf. As we are very proud of our school, we have been in touch with the Town and Country newspaper and hope to have an article in November’s publication so keep an eye out for that! We also hope to appear in the Parish Magazine this month.
As you know, we had a County Review on the 11 October in order to evaluate the School’s provision and performance. There were many very positive comments made and we were given some areas for development. Over the next week, I shall be putting together an overview of our School Improvement and Development Plan and sending a copy out to you to keep you informed about the priorities for the school and how we hope to take it forward.
I have only been at Happisburgh for two months but it is clear that this is a fantastic school with the potential to become outstanding. Thank you for your continued support, your comments and your daily smiles.

Silver Birch News
This term we are learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’. To
kick start our topic, we made bread. We pushed and pulled the
dough and left it to double in size, then we moulded it into a roll
shape and baked it. Finally we tasted our bread. It was delicious
and the school smelt lovely.
We also collected dry leaves and sticks from the school grounds
and set light to them in a fire pit, we talked about safety around
fires. While we sat around the fire we used our senses to discuss
what we could see, hear, smell and feel. We will use all of these
wonderful words and ideas to help us to write a poem later in the
term.

Crucial Crew 2019
Y6 visited the Crucial Crew event at Gresham’s School. We went to nine workshops
highlighting how to stay safe and how to help in emergency situations we might find
ourselves in. We spotted fire hazards, learnt that a lit cigarette contains over 4,000
chemicals, how to be safe on-line, how to do chest compressions & about the recovery
position. Did you know you do not smell when you are asleep! That’s why a workable
smoke alarm is so important.
Cherry Tree News
We have had a fantastic week working with our class text, Pumpkin Soup. The
children have enjoyed investigating a range of pumpkins, squashes and gourds
using all their senses and a range of tools– they have been busy chopping,
scooping, tearing, hammering, cooking, counting and painting with the
vegetables. In fact, there’s very little they haven’t done with them!
We thoroughly enjoyed our cooking day on Wednesday where the whole class
worked together to use the whole pumpkin by toasting pumpkin seeds, roasting
pumpkin flesh and making pumpkin soup. All of the children were brave enough to try each of
their creations and say whether they liked it or not! In English we have been focussing on
hearing and saying sounds in words and the children have been practising writing these by
writing a list of ingredients from the story, for both a class list and individually.
Horse Chestnut News
The children have fully immersed themselves in their learning about the Stone Age.
They have produced outstanding homework projects and cross curricular work in school
to inspire and enthuse their learning about this period in history.
We have been joined by our families to construct Flintstone balloon cars and Stone Age
catapults. We have made stunning Stone Age necklaces using clay and shells.
We have sent rockets flying across our classroom to investigate forces and sent cars zooming down ramps to
investigate friction.
Our trip to Gressenhall was inspiring and enriched
the children’s understanding of the Stone Age.
The children have written Stone Age stories,
information texts and even instructions on how to
wash a woolly mammoth!
Friends’ News The Friends of Happisburgh Primary and Early Years School want to send out a massive round of thank yous to all of those who came and supported the fundraising Autumn Bingo event. In total, £554 was raised, all of which will go to helping the school pupils. What a phenomenal amount and a fantastic evening with lots of lucky winners on the bingo, raffle and pumpkin competition. The next Friends fundraising event is Christmas Songs around the Tree, taking place on Friday, December 13 from 4.30pm at the school. As well as singing some festive favourites outside the school around the Christmas tree, there will be a chance to warm up inside with a host of refreshments and food including hot mince pies and jacket potatoes. There will also be a host of stalls selling Christmas gifts, bric-a-brac and toys and a Name the Snowman competition. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Dear Parents/Carers,
We would like to thank you for your continual support in making sure that your child attends school
regularly in ensuring their best chances of a successful education.
As we know the government states; ’pupils need to attend school regularly to benefit from their
education. Missing out on lessons leaves children vulnerable to falling behind. Children with
poor attendance tend to achieve less in both primary & secondary schools’
To help strengthen attendance for pupils further here is a general reminder of school absence
procedures:
If a pupil does not arrive to school by the end of the close of register and with no reason given for
their absence, then firstly school will call home to ascertain why the pupil is absent.
If there is no response a further call will be made, failing this the child’s named emergency contact
will be telephoned. If school are still unable to make contact with the parent and are concerned
about a pupil then a home visit may be carried out.
In extreme circumstances a welfare check maybe requested, this is made by the police and/ or
referrals to other agencies made to help support the child in attending school regularly.
Joint enquires may also be made to Local Authorities to establish the whereabouts of the child
through Children Missing Education procedures. When other interventions have failed the local
authority may issues a penalty notice or consider prosecution. In some cases multi-agency
support may be required through children services.
So if at any point your child will not be attending school please always inform school in the first
instance possible. Please be aware that we do appreciate that lives are full and busy and we all do
experience challenging events from time to time, this is understandable. Please do not hesitate to
contact myself or Head Teacher Mrs Jackson if you feel you need any support, have worries or
concerns or need any advice regarding your child’s attendance at school. Like you, our focus is on
pupils having a positive & full experience of their education as they become successful learners,
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Egerton
