G E N E R A L M A N A G E R ’ SCorner

By the time this issue of HapPENNings arrives in your mailbox, the Class of 2016 will have established itself as the newest part of the Penn community. On behalf of the Penn Club, I would like to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to them and to wish them every success in their endeavors. In late July, the Penn Club had the privilege of hosting a reception for the New York City members of the Class of 2016 and their families. It was an honor to meet and socialize with such a bright and eager group of di-verse young people. Many of them will be future members of the Penn Club, and we look forward to being a part of their lives as they grow through the Penn experience.

Over the summer, I received and unexpected gift from the US Marine Corps. This is the branch of the military that oversees the annual collection of “Toys For Tots” that many of you have donated to at our annual Members’ Holiday Party. The Marine Corps wanted to acknowledge our past generosity with a plaque of recognition. This handsome piece is now on display in our Lobby, and I do hope you will take time to look at it and take pride in the part the Penn Club has played in this worthy endeavor.

Our membership renewal period for the July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013 year will soon be drawing to a close. A good majority of our members have already renewed their membership for the new year. If you are among those whose dues bill has been waiting for attention while you

enjoyed the distractions of summer, I urge you to renew today. Your membership continues to hold great value in terms of access to our wonderful Clubhouse, as well as our programs, events and worldwide network of reciprocal clubs. It is truly a pleasure to have you as a member of our Club community and the even wider Penn community, and I would not want any of you to miss out on the many advantages your membership carries with it.

Speaking of membership, I’ve been asked by the Member-ship Committee to remind you to do your part in helping our membership to grow and sustain itself. Every one of you is our best ambassador for our fine Club. You know what the Pen Club means to you, and we would hope that you would want to share that experience with your fellow alums, families and associates. There are many op-portunities to introduce new members to the Penn Club. For information on how to recruit new members, please contact our Membership Office.

My staff and I take great pleasure in being a part of your Penn Club experience, and hope you will continue to enjoy and share your Club in every way possible. We hope to see you often at your home-away-from-home in New York, and look forward to welcoming you back to one of the top ranked clubs in America.

Former U.s. secretary of commerce Barbara Hackman Franklin |

Tuesday, October 2nd. 6:30 p.m. When Barbara Franklin reflects on a career that has spanned government and busi-ness, with highlights ranging from her appointment as the country’s 29th Secretary of Commerce to founding her own international trade consulting and investment firm, she credits her success in part to the nation that nurtured her ambitions. “We are fortunate to live in a risk-based culture that is reinforced by a democratic system of government,” says Franklin. “As Americans, one of our competitive edges is

our ability to create and innovate, to change direction and try new things.”As U.S. Secretary of Commerce in 1992, Barbara Franklin reestablished ministerial trade contacts between the United States and China after they had been suspended for several years. One of the first women to graduate from Harvard Business School, Franklin is used to breaking down barri-ers. She has worked with five Presidents of the United States, founded an

international trade consulting and investment firm, and earned kudos as a corporate governance expert. Her Washington, D.C.-based firm, Barbara Franklin Enterprises, helps American companies navigate trade and invest-ment issues, especially in China and other Asian countries. Franklin continues to be a prominent advocate for women’s equality and empowerment in the workplace. In 1971, Franklin was hired as an As-sistant to Nixon where she was selected to recruit more women into the upper levels of the federal government. Her efforts helped to bring more than one hundred women into executive positions in the government—al-most four times more than in any previous administration. Moving easily between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, she has earned accolades as a corporate director and was a senior fellow at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin’s rich experi-ence offers much we can all learn from. $35 per member and $45 per guest plus tax and service charge by Tues-day, September 25th. $45 per member and $55 per guest for late reservations. Includes light snacks and an open bar of wine and beer.

everything You need to Know about Breaking into the startup scene |

Monday, October 15th. 7:00 p.m. New York has become the nation’s second largest hub for innovation and is nipping at San Francisco’s heels. With Gilt Groupe, Tumblr, Foursquare and Fab.com all emerging out of our city, tech has become

Yet how does one transition from the corporate world into the risky yet emotionally rewarding startup scene? Regardless of whether you are look-ing to start your own company or join an existing one, you will need to know some basic facts including the pros and cons of tech, why so many Penn grads are entering the space, and what you can expect in terms of lifestyle and compensation.

Attend this exciting panel of NYC-based Penn grads that have all made the transition in the past five years. They are happy to share their experi-ences with you — the next generation of successful entrepreneurs. Mark C. taylor: is Modern Finance Ruining Modern Art? |Thursday, September 27th. Wine Reception: 6:00 p.m.; Lecture: 6:30 p.m. From early forms of patronage to the

current global art market, art and money have always been closely related. But in the past three decades, the game has changed. A new form of

capitalism — finance capitalism — has emerged that has changed the economy and is transforming contemporary art. In his recent book, Refiguring the Spiritual: Beuys, Barney, Turrell, Goldsworthy, Professor Taylor analyzes the artistic responses to the commodification, corporatization and financialization of art in the work of artists like Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Damian Hirst. As financial assets become virtual and art becomes a financial asset, money and art enter into a symbiotic relation that is revolutionizing the currency of exchange. As bubble after bubble continues to burst, the work of certain artists provides an effective critique of the excesses of global capitalism.

Mark C. Taylor is the Chair of the Department of Religion at Columbia University. A leading figure in debates about post-modernism higher education, Taylor has written on topics ranging from philosophy, religion, literature, art and architec-ture to education, media, science, technology and economics. Taylor received a Doktorgrad (Philosophy) from the University of Copenhagen in 1981, a Ph.D. in religion from Harvard in 1997, and a B.A. from Wesleyan University in 1968. In 1998, he co-founded a company named Global Education Network, whose mission was to introduce high-quality online education in the arts, sciences and humanities to anyone, anywhere in

William H. Chafe’s Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal |Monday, September 24th. Cash Bar: 6:00 p.m.; Program: 6:30 p.m. Join us for an evening of conversation

with William Chafe as he discusses his most recent book Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal. Chafe’s many insights—into subjects such as health care, Kenneth Starr, welfare reform, and the extent to which the Lewinsky scandal finally freed Hillary to become

a politician in her own right and return to the consensus reformer she had been in college and law school—will add texture and depth to our understanding of the Clintons’ experience together.

William H. Chafe is the Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History at Duke University. He is the author of many books on race, gender, and politics, including, most recently, The Rise and Fall of the American Century: The United States from 1890 to 2008.

Copies of Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal will be available for purchase. This event is complimentary. However note that there is a $10 no-show fee. Advanced registration is required. Please consider having dinner back at the Penn Club following the event.
