Traveling with a Trico by Todd Leedy

Over the past 25 years I haveflown with bicycles to southernAfrica several times, but these

had been one way journeys for thebikes as I was leaving them behindwhen my stays ended. Therefore I hadsimply re-used cardboard bikeshipping boxes obtained from localshops. These trips also occurred inthat now hazy period when airlinesrarely charged for a bike box as longas it met their weight requirements. Most have since discovered bicyclesas an additional revenue stream.

This trip marked the first attempt at anout & back journey for a bike Iintended to keep - so using a real casemade sense. For a trip from Florida toCape Town, I knew only a hardshellcase would suffice. The Trico Ironcaseowned by GCC is a fairly simpledesign: a rigid plastic rectangular outershell with a layer of foam lining eachoutside panel and one foam layer toseparate frame and components fromyour wheelset. A closure system ofseven straps & buckles holdseverything together. Two small wheelson one end allow you to drag the caselike a somewhat unwieldy duffel bagshould you choose.

Packing the case takes a bit of effortso do not wait until your ride is about toleave for the airport. Despite using ahardshell case, I took the extraprecaution of covering as much of theframe with closed cell pipe insulationas possible. This is a cheap and quickextra measure of protection. My 56cmsteel road bike necessitated removalof wheels, pedals, handlebars andseat/post. I choose to place the frameinside facing drive side down to betterprotect the rear derailleur (if using asoft sided case you should perhapsremove it). Bars, pedals and seat/postfollowed in this layer, then covered bythe middle foam piece. Wheels areplaced slightly overlapping on top thenthe last outside piece of foamcompletes your steel (or carbon oraluminum) and foam sandwich.

At first it might look like this will nevercollapse to fit within the proper depthdimension of the case. Beforeplacing the cover on top, loosen thethree main straps somewhat thengently compress your "sandwich" inthe middle until that long strap can bebuckled loosely. Next buckle theother two long straps loosely. Nowyou can apply light pressure andwork each strap gradually tighter until

the two sides of the case overlapfully. Buckle and tighten the four endstraps, then re-tighten the three longstraps. You are done, save placingsome tag that identifies the case asyours. Taping on a large handwrittenlabel is the simplest option, howevermy crafty spouse made several tagscoated with clear packing tape whichwent around a strap on each side ofthe case. They are bombproof.

Do your research well in advance onwhat airlines charge for "oversize"baggage as rates do vary. If flyingdomestic, you might choose insteadto use a service such asBikeflights.com or have your localbike shop pack and ship for you. Butfor international travel, payingwhatever the airline demands is likelyto still be cheaper than shippingseparately. Delta charges $150 eachway if the bike is your secondallowed piece of luggage. Have yourcredit card ready - gone are the dayswhen you can slip an obvious bikecase through for free. Unless youpacked a lightweight road bike, you'llbe over the usual 50 lbs limit with aTrico case. For that extra $150 Deltadid not care as long as it did notapproach 70 lbs. Then be preparedfor a slightly annoyed TSA officer toopen, search, and swipe your case. You can watch and hope they haveactually closed it properly before itdisappears into the bowels of the airtravel industry. If you happen todepart out of an airport with a XL bagscanner this may not happen, butwell, good luck with that.

If you are traveling for any eventwhich you cannot control the starttime, think about traveling early. Then fly even earlier than that.Despite paying the extra oversizefee, any tight connections due toweather or equipment delays mayresult in your regular bag making itthrough the system while your bikesits and waits for a later flight. And ifthe next flight is not until 24 hourslater, well then things can get a bittense. Trust me, I know. Also beprepared for any connection througha non-partner local airline to chargeyou a second time at their ownoversize rate. I did not face thissituation but I have seen it occur. And just to keep things interesting,be prepared for a different ratecharged when you check in for thereturn flight - I saved $50!

In sum, taking your own bicycle foran international trip is an investmentof time, money, and sometimesnervous energy. Where suitablein-country rentals are available, it iscertainly an option worth considering. However, for some events - andsome people - using your ownmachine remains a necessity. I'mhappy to say the Trico case loanedby GCC got the job done quite well.

Statement Notes

The GCC had a down financial yearin FY2017 (July 1, 2016 - June 30,2017).

The biggest impact on our bottomline is how well we do at theGainesville Cycling Festival. Participation has continued on adownward trend; getting more of ourown members to participate wouldhelp significantly. As a lot of ourFestival expenses are fixed, increasing participation adds a lot tothe bottom line.
