HANGING OUT IN THE CLUBHOUSE At the end of the Monsters! exhibit, you’ll find a dreamcatcher, a Native American hoop for screening bad dreams from our sleep. In our version, visitors attach paper feathers on which they’ve written or drawn their worries or fears, so they can leave them behind when they go home. While adults tend to leave worries about jobs and health, kids tend to leave fears about spiders, sharks, vampires, zombies, and other creatures real and imagined. Children and adults also worry about family, as in these feathers, where two young visitors are worried for their brothers, but one appears to be afraid of her brother! HANGING OUT IN THE CLUBHOUSE

At the end of the Monsters! exhibit, you’ll find a dreamcatcher, a Native American hoop for screening bad dreams from our sleep.

Could it be that he’s the vampire in the drawing?

We have a brand new hangout spot for kids and families, the Monsters! Clubhouse. This fun area, next-door to the Monsters! exhibit, is outfitted with comfy beanbag chairs and stocked with storybooks and coloring pages all about monsters and magical creatures. Come by the Museum to relax and spend time together while discovering new monsters.

SHARING CHILDREN’S FEARS

It’s also filled with carpools, mostly to school, where, every morning, we hand our children over to relative strangers seven hours a day, five days a week. It’s a big leap of faith, but—judging from the global citizens that join me at the dinner table every night—I’ll admit it seems to be paying off. Surprise, surprise.

Whether it’s language and culture week, a novel about the civil rights movement, or a day in the garden discovering how the earth sustains us all, my boys are learning how to get along with others in an increasingly diverse world that feels smaller every day. They’re not only starting to understand that we’re more alike than different, but they’re also learning that they have a role in celebrating our common humanity, as well.

These lessons are becoming such a part of who they are, that it gives me real hope for the future of our world.

At the Museum of Man, we have a similar goal of creating and holding a space where the community can engage in meaningful conversation about topics that really matter. Whether it’s race, disability, human rights, or immigration, our vision is to be San Diego’s dynamic place to learn about each other, reflect on your place in the world, and build a better community. The world can use a lot more of that, if you ask me. Don’t you agree?

Here’s to the global citizens of the world—past, present and future!

Best wishes,

Micah D. Parzen, Ph.D., J.D.

We’d like to say a special thank-you to the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation for its crucial support of how we digitize and access our world-class collections. The two-year rollout process involves specialized software called CSpace, which uses cloud computing to make data available no matter where staff are working or what Internet-connected device they’re using.

The system has a complex interface that allows staff to create a standardized system to classify objects, artists, world cultures, and other important information about a single object. As a result, system searches will return more relevant data from the collections, making our objects easier to research and study.

In addition, a unique data hierarchy and barcoded labeling system will precisely track every object in our collections, from broad locations like storage rooms, to specific cabinets, shelf numbers, and containers.

As an added bonus, there’s no limit to how many users can work in the system at any time. More than 15 staff, volunteers, and interns will upgrade our digital collections records using the new system.

thank you to the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation!

Our popular Dirt Detectives summer camp series is back for

another summer of exploration and fun!

These exciting camps let kids experience the work of real-life

archaeologists by getting their hands dirty digging for artifacts in

a dig box, creating their own tool kits, researching artifacts and

creating an exhibit about them, and more.

Annissa, age 9, told us what she liked about Dirt Detectives:

“I really loved making fossils. We took some sponges and put them

in vinegar and water and then took them out to dry. They were

hard as a rock. I also loved digging for treasure. Touring the hidden

collections was so cool! I got to see all kinds of artifacts. Do you

know what an artifact is? It’s something that was made from people

a long time ago, like a thousand years ago.

“I really liked this camp because you get

to explore and touch things. You’ll make

some new friends, too!”

register, visit http://museumofman.org/camps.

Since 1999, the Museum has welcomed hundreds of elementary and middle school students through the dynamic School in the Park program. It takes education out of the typical classroom setting and into the cultural institutions of Balboa Park.

Students study Ancient Egypt, archaeology, the history of early man, and local Native American cultures. They also get behind-the-scenes tours of our collections and the Physical Anthropology Lab.

This year we’re pleased to welcome 628 students from Rosa Parks Elementary and Wilson Middle School of City Heights. Maybe there’s a future museum curator among them?
