  • Difference between Hand tool and Power tool Hand toolsNo External power source, other than the physical force applied by the user. Hand- tools include anything from axes to hammers, and screwdrivers to wrenches. Power ToolsRequire External power source to function -e.g.Electricity, compressed air, etc. or Internal (battery pack, etc.).

  • There are five basic rules that apply to all tools used either hand or power. Both kinds of tools require specific safety precautions to be followed, yet some rules will apply to both.

  • 5 Basic Rules FOR ALL TOOLS Keep all tools in good working order Use the tool only for what it is designed to do Examine the tool for damage before each use Always follow the manufacturers instructions when operating any tool Always wear the appropriate PPE when operating any tool

  • 4 Basic Practices using Hand tools Keep tools in good working condition- Do not use chisel with mushroomed head- Dull saws- Hammers with cracked handles- Wrenches that have spread jaws- Files with bare tangs- Screw driver with chipped edge1Basic Practice

  • 4 Basic Practices using Hand tools Use right tools for the jobs- Use crowbar not a file- A Hammer not a wrench- Proper size wrenches not a plier- A punch not a screw driver- A chisel not a file etc.,2Basic Practice

  • 4 Basic Practices using Hand tools Use tools properly- Do not hold job in hand and put screw - Do not pull the pliers towards you- Do not chiseling towards you- Do not pressure on sliding jaws instead of on fixed jaw- Do not hammer striking against hard face - Do not keep fingers / thumb close to hand saw blade3Basic Practice

  • 4 Basic Practices using Hand tools Keep tools in proper place- Do not leave tools on overhead shelves, Ladders, Scafolds,Pipe lines etc.,- Do not keep tools in haphazard way on workbench - Do not carry knives or sharp tools in a trouser pocket - Do not carry tools in hand while claiming structure or ladder4Basic Practice

  • General Safety PrecautionsAppropriate PPEs should be worn due to hazards that may be encountered while using portable power tools and hand tools.

Floors should be kept as clean and dry as possible to prevent accidental slips with or around dangerous hand tools.

  • The Greatest Hazards Of Hand Tools: Misuse / Improper Maintenance1) Using a screwdriver as a chisel Could cause the tip to break and fly, hitting either the operator or bystanders 2) A wooden handle on tool such as a hammer or an axe is loose, splintered or cracked The tool head could fly off and strike the operator or bystanders

  • The Greatest Hazards Of Hand Tools: cont. Misuse / Improper Maintenance3) Impact tools, e.g. chisels and wedges, are unsafe if their heads are mushroomed The heads might shatter on impact sending sharp fragments flying4) Wrenches must not be used if the jaws are sprung, cracked or twisted The wrench could slip off

  • General Safety rules for Hand Tools 2) Tag worn, damaged or defective tools and do not use them 1) Carry all sharp tools in a holster or sheath 3) Do not perform makeshift repairs to tools 4) Do not use cheater bars

  • General Safety rules for Cont. Hand Tools 5) Do not throw tools from one location to another or from one employee to another 6) When working on a ladder or scaffolding be sure you and your tools are secure 7) Do not carry tools in your hand while climbing, use a tool belt or host the tools by using a hand line

  • Safety Rules for specific hand toolsHAMMERS Use a claw hammer for pulling nails Do not strike a hardened steel surface with a claw hammer Do not strike one hammer against another hammer Do not use a hammer as a wedge or pry-bar

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdCHISELS Use only chisels that are sharp Do not use chisels with a mushroom head Use only hammers that are designed for use with chisels

  • Safety Rules for specific hand toolscontdFILES Never use a file as a Centre punch, a Chisel, Never use a file with a cracked, rough or loose handle Material to be filed is held securely in a vice or Fixture Do not clean a file by striking it against a vice or other metal object Arrange files neatly in different compartment according to size

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdHACKSAW Adjust a Hacksaw so that the blade will not buckle. Install the blade in the frame with the teeth pointing forward Apply pressure on forward stroke only Use proper blade for the proper materials. (Brass, MS etc.,)

  • Safety Rules for specific hand toolscontdSAWS Do not carry the saw by the blade Do not use any saw that has a dull saw blade Keep control of the saw by releasing downward pressure at the end of each stroke

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdSCREWDRIVERS Always ensure the screwdriver fits the head of the screw Do not hold the work piece against your body while using the screwdriver Do not use a screwdriver as a punch, chisel, pry bar or nail puller

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdSCREWDRIVERS Contd Do not use a screwdriver to test the charge of a battery Use blue handled screwdrivers when working on electrical Do not use a screwdriver to make a starting hole for screws

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdWRENCHS Do not use wrenches that are bent, cracked, or that have loose handles A hammer may be used for striking face wrenches ONLY If at all possible use socket or box wrenches Do not use a cheater bar

  • Safety Rules for specific hand tools contdSNIPS Wear safety glasses or goggles when using snips Wear work gloves when cutting material with snips Do not use snips as a hammer, screwdriver, wrench or pry bar Use the correct type of snips for the job

  • Power ToolsOffer - More power, - Adaptability and - Dependability than ever before.

With enhanced tool performance- Safety issues also increased

  • Types of Power ToolsBased on the power source they use: Electric, Pneumatic, Liquid fuel, Hydraulic, and Powder-actuated.

  • General Safety rules for Power Tools Do not use power tools you are not trained on. Do not lift or carry power tools by their power cord. Keep power cords out of the paths of the power tool. Do not leave tools unattended.

  • General Safety rules for Cont. Power Tools5. Do not stand in water or wet surfaces when running a power tool6. Hold all power tools by the plastic hand grips or other nonconductive areas.7. Do not plug multiple electrical cords into a single outlet8. Do not use power tools or extension cords with a missing prong9. Ground all tools unless double insulated

  • General Safety rules for Cont. Power Tools10. Be aware of all power lines, electrical circuits and water pipes that are not visible 11. Do not wear loose clothing, dangling objects or jewelry. Long hair must be restrained 12. All observers should be kept a safe distance from the work area

  • General Safety rules for Cont. Power Tools13. Keep cords and hoses away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.

    14. Disconnect tools when not in use, before servicing, and when changing accessories such as blades, bits and cutters.

  • Abrasive-Wheel Tools1) Before an abrasive wheel is mounted, it should be inspected closely and sound or ring tested to ensure it is free of cracks or defectsPowered abrasive grinding, cutting, polishing and wire buffing wheels create special safety problems because they can throw off flying fragments.2) To test wheels, tap them with a light non-metallic instrument. If they sound cracked or dead do not use them; they could fly apartPower Tools

  • Abrasive-Wheel Tools cont.Always use the right wheel or cup for the job you are performing. Be sure to match the RPM Rating with the tool. Finally, pay close attention to any special warnings, that the manufacturer may offer, such as do not use in wet or high-moisture conditions. Power Tools

  • Circular Saws 1) Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields2) Use a dust mask, especially when cutting treated woods 3) Wear hearing protection, especially during extended periods of operation

  • Circular Saws cont. .4) Use sharp blades, dull blades cause binding, stalling and possible kickbacks5) Use the correct blade for the job6) Ensure the blade guard is in working order, never remove it or tie it back7) Avoid cutting small pieces that cant be properly secured or the saw shoe cant properly rest

  • Drills Be sure the chuck is securely tightened to the spindle Tighten the bit securely and remove the chuck key Always hold or brace the tool securely and use any auxiliary handles if provided Dont force a drill. Apply only enough pressure for the bit to do the cutting

  • Miter / Chop Saws Because of the saws downward cutting motion, be sure to keep hands and fingers out of the blades path Be sure all guards are in place and working Ensure that the recommended size and RPM blades are being used
