Halls That Inspire (HTI) has been
spreading its concept of message-
based murals throughout the
Paterson School System over the
past two years. Founded by
Patersonian and Navy veteran
David Thompson in 2008, HTI
made Eastside High School its
model school by designing over 18
murals in the school’s academies.
But, the vibrant, eclectic and
edgy models didn’t just stop there.
The organization has worked
with students to paint some 100
murals in 15 schools in the district.
Over 4,000 hours of community
service by students and AmeriCorp
workers have been logged. In
addition, last year, HTI awarded its
first book scholarship of $1,000 to a
graduating senior of Eastside High
School’s Information and
Technology Academy.
HTI added three programs:
Murals and Mentorship, Paint the Halls, and Walls That
Inspire. The signature program, Murals and Mentorship,
focuses on providing supplemental education through the
arts by incorporating computer literacy, geometry,
leadership development, mentorship, and Paterson
history. “Halls That Inspire is such a needed
organization. There is no type of art recreation for
the students. These kids need a platform to
express their creativity, and Halls That Inspire is
that platform,” says David Thompson.
In spring 2014, HTI will expand its services
into other school districts throughout New Jersey.
Halls That Inspire is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization. With a focus on “beautifying the
halls” of schools and other community-based
organizations, the goal of HTI is to be a conduit
of change and art restoration in the community.
