3 causes of IDENTIFYING THE

GENETIC

The reason for a genetic disposition to hair loss (male pattern or female pattern baldness) stems from a hormone called Dihydrotestos-terone (DHT) and Prostaglandin D2 (PGd2) which is exacerbated by a imbalanced diet which influences toxicity levels adding to a poor environment for hair to thrive.

DHT and PGd2 both influence the normal growth cycle of hair resulting in premature shrinking of the hair follicle leading to apoptosis. DHT and PGd2 bind to the receptor sites in the hair follicle stopping the natural flow of hair growth. This type of hair loss is only seen on the top part of the scalp for men and women.

The reason for the difference in the pattern of loss is due to the way in which a man and women’s sweats, sweat is a carrying agent for DHT, men sweat in pockets on the scalp and a women sweats from the middle parting outwards thus these hair follicles are exposed to more irregularly cycles of growth.

GENETIC HAIR LOSS (MALE AND FEMALE PATTERN BALDNESS)

MEDICATION

Many commonly prescribed prescription drugs can cause temporary hair loss and potentially trigger the onset of male and female pattern baldness. Depending on the sensitivity of a person’s physiology will depict whether or not a person will be affected by these prescribed prescription drugs.

These drugs force your hair into a premature Telogen/Exogen (resting/falling out cycle) resulting in up to 50% of a person’s hair falling out within a short period of time. These prescribed drugs normally only showcase hair loss after 1-2 years of continual use. Younger girls in particular notice hair loss through certain contraceptives that disrupt the normal growing cycles of hair growth.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

A medical condition that influences your hair is defined as anything that changes the normal well being of a person’s physiology eg. Thyroid abnormalities, auto immune disease, pregnancies, stress, poor diets leading to acidosis, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, blunt trauma to a hair follicle ect.

This means resources are taken away from hair building and set towards defense from germs, microbes, bacteria etc.

Some people have argued that human head hair serves the purpose of conspicuous consumption much like a peacocks tail which serves no purpose but vanity but illustrates a gauge of health.

HAIR LOSS DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITIONALOPECIA AREATA

So in other words if a person losses their hair due to a medical condition then its your physiology’s way of sounding an alarm notifying of a change in the normal events of our constitution and potentially leading to hair loss.

The fundamental problem surrounding hair loss is the follicle’s neuro transmitters

being blocked by DHT and Protaglandin D2. Our products have been specifically

formulated to remove the blockages surrounding the follicle, renewing

communication between the body and hair whilst nourishing and replenishing

the hair and follicle with a highly concentrated herbal compound that anchors the

hair deeper for longer, prolongs the growing cycle, shortens the shedding

cycle and increases hair density by 121%.

[Jade] So your career started over 30 years ago, tell us about how it all began.

Well you know my career started as a young boy, I was in standard 5.. My mum always went to her hairdresser on a Friday and I was intrigued and fascinated to see what they were doing in the salon. And soon after that I got a job to sweep floors and started washing hair. And when I got to Matric I had my own clients. From there I started doing a correspondence course on hairdressing. Did my exams at college in the Free State, and so it began. I got introduced to the Fashion Academy, it was just amazing to learn the importance of color. As a hair stylist it is very important to understand color, you can’t sell a color to a client if you don’t understand the skin tone, the undertone of the hair color and the eye color.

I was very blessed, and soon after that magazines got involved. I did a couple of TV shows and magazine work, and got trained as a make-up artist and image specialist. We were traveling around the country doings courses and presenting workshops and opened up a couple of salons, and this is where Isjon was born. At a stage in my life I also won a competition for a Business Global Award and one of the prizes was to attend the UCLA in Los Angeles. From an artistic side and a business side this award really helped me a lot in my career to understand and excel in this industry.

We did a couple of videos and I also wrote a book called the Art of Accessories that was sold and given to customers as gifts. Eventually I joined a world wide hair organization called Intercoiffure, which is a fantastic organization to be part of as a hairdresser. I also became the Fashion Director for Oceania and South Africa for a couple of years. We did a couple of workshops and I presented Intercoiffure at an international level. It was a wonderful opportunity which really helped in opening doors as a stylist.

My latest baby is what we call Easy Plant, where we are using all the hair snippets that are landing on the floor which we are using that as a fertilizer. So yes, we are constantly looking for opportunities every day to innovate and give back. It is very very important to see what you can do for the industry and not just for yourself.

[Jade] Since then you have won multiple awards recognizing your color mastery, up styling and leadership skills. What do you believe is the recipe to your success?

My philosophy is what you see in my work, you see my soul. I love what I am doing. You know that is very important. If you work in a salon and you keep looking at your watch, thinking I wish I could go home; then you should rather leave. That shows your heart is not in it and you are not suited to this career. You need to be passionate about helping your customers, and to give them the best advice, service and products to help them achieve their goals and solve their problems.

[Jade] What advice could you give to stylists wanting to find their unique authentic voice in the hair industry?

I think the first step is you need to decide what type of hair dresser you are; a creative hair stylist or do you want to solve problems. I think you want to make money you need to sell beauty and solve your clients hair problems at the same time.

[Jade] How important is it to have role models as a stylist? And who are some of the role models you look up to?

Oh I have a few! One of the role models I have is a lady with the name Anne Minsey, she is a very well known spokesperson from America. And something that I have learned from her is that from a very young age you might have a little feeling saying ‘you can’t do it’ you know? Or ‘you’re useless’ and overcoming this negative voice and believing in yourself is something I have learnt from her. Another role model of mine is Mr. Rolf Loskin from South Africa. I can remember I did my first hair show from his salon, he retired a few years back but he is still doing hair and still training stylists. He is also involved with Crystal House where we as an organization try to help street children to teach them how to become hair stylists. I personally think sometimes as a business owner and a hair stylists, you can become depressed. Things are not sunshine and roses every day in this industry, but these moments always remind me to ask myself; What would Mr. Rolf Loskin do in this situation? This is why it is so important to have role models, to help you get through these moments in your career.

[Jade] Your clients look to you for guidance and advice, some of which have been with you throughout your career. How do you build this type of trust and commitment with your clients?

I personally feel proper consultation is priority. It is the way you conduct a consultation. So for instance some clients aren’t even aware that they are losing hair, so during the process of a consultation we first listen to the client and understand the clients hair history, their diet and medications they are on to better understand the current condition of the hair. Clients also don’t understand what is considered a normal shedding cycle and what is excessive hair loss, so consultation and education to the client is vitally important to build that trust and relationship that is needed for them to become a lifetime client.

[Jade] How important is proper consultation and prescription in the hair industry? And do you believe this is testament to your success?

“A client wants to know that the stylist understands their problems as well as fully understands the product that the stylist is trying to promote. This is certainly testament to my teams success, because we believe in educating and empowering our clients to solve problems with the products and services we provide.”

[Jade] How were you introduced to Newtrino?

I did a lot of research on Newtrino and it took some time before I approached your company. It was one night at a meeting we spoke about hair loss products, and I was referred to Newtrino by a colleague and I was really intrigued by what Newtrino has achieved in the market so far. The one aspect that I love about this product is the improved cellular communication within the follicle and hair which I love.

Clients are very educated and well-read on hair loss these days, and they are looking for products that don’t cause allergies and this is why I came across Newtrino and I love it. If you believe in something, you can sell it.

[Jade] You and your team at Isjon achieved some of the highest marks on the Newtrino Hair Loss Qualification, what do think is the reason behind your teams passion and dedication to hair loss and solving your clients problems?

I have a fantastic team. Years ago I did a course with the Human Specific Institute, and learnt how to select a winning team which I believe is the first reason for our success. But I have to say that I have never had such in-depth training and support like I have received from Newtrino. It took over 6 weeks, and there were certain times where we were unsure and uncertain, but our trainer never got flustered or irritated with us [laugh] and when we wrote and passed our Newtrino Hair Loss Qualification, we all felt confident to promote this brand to all our customers to solve their hair loss issues.

[Jade] How important is it for clients to start their hair recovery journey - sooner rather than later?

Funny enough I was a judge at a pageant the other night and there were quite a few youngsters on stage, and what we realize now is that teenagers from the age of 13 and 14 are already starting to loose their hair. And the sooner they come into a salon and undergo a proper consultation and analysis, the more hair they will be able to hold onto as they get older. Identifying the type of hair loss on the scalp is also very important, and as we have learnt from Newtrino is that the shape and pattern of hair loss assists us in understanding the cause and gives us the confidence to prescribe the correct products to address the problem. We also take photo’s of our clients progress every time they come back to the salon (every 6 weeks or so) allowing clients to visually see their progress and encourage them to stay committed to the prescribed program we have given them. We as stylists have the responsibility to educate customers on hair loss and guide them through the process.

[Jade] How can clients contact you or schedule an appointment with you or one of your team?

It is so easy, even the lady that is sitting in the Kalahari can contact us. We offer telephonic consultations, in-salon scalp analysis and free in-salon hair loss consultations to answer any questions you might have on hair loss. We will have an online consultation form available very soon for clients to fill in and send to us so that we can prescribe a solution to them. The actual hair loss consultation takes roughly 30 minutes. We have a salon in Woodmead and launching another salon in Midrand in a few months.

[Jade] As some of you may know, Johan is our First Quarter Finalist for our Stylist of the Year Competition, and has won an amazing prize of a 2 night stay at Sun City. And we are very proud and honored to present you with this gift and this certificate.. Congratulations!

Thank you very much, this is very kind of you, but if you don’t mind I would like to introduce someone to you that I believe truly deserves this. Many years ago I went to a movie house and I had a terrible headache so I popped into a chemist and there was this lady sitting on the floor sorting through some products, her name was Daline, and I asked her for some advice and the way she spoke to me and gave me more an more information about the product it was just incredible, and I said to her that night; I want you in my business. So today, she is still my manager and has been with me all these years. I personally feel that this award is because of my team, but most importantly from Daline and all years of dedication and incredible client service she has offered. Daline, this is prize is for you and your husband for a 2 night honeymoon at Sun City. Congratulations you deserve it!

[Daleen] WOW! Thank you so so much Johan! I love you to bits and its so nice working with you, and like our slogan says; our work reflects our souls. We love what we do and that’s what I experience here every day!

[Jade] Once again, it was an absolute honor to spend the afternoon with you and your team, to get to know you and thank you for supporting us and we hope to have a long standing relationship with you going forward.
