    INSIDE THIS ISSUEWater referendum

Voters say yes to selling water, sewer systems. PAGE 2

    By NICK COHENThe Sun

The date was Oct. 12, 1929. Longbefore the ivy began creepingalong the brick walls of WrigleyField. Even before the brilliant, blooming azaleas first grewacross Augusta National. On thisdate, the most famous flora infootball, the distinctive privethedges ringing the field at Geor-gia's Sanford Stadium, were firstplanted.

Now, Haddonfield MemorialHigh School Stadium has thesame distinctive flair thanks tosophomore Nick Bateman.

For his Eagle Scout serviceproject, Nick, 15, wanted to giveback to his hometown communi-ty. No better way than combininghis love of Haddonfield with hislove of his Bulldawg footballteam.

Nick chose to build a brick and

stone pedestal for a six-foot longfiberglass bulldawg and to plant atotal of 60 privet hedges flankingthe statue behind the end zone atthe HMHS stadium.

I talked with Mr. Banos (Had-donfields athletic director) andpeople on my end with the Scoutsabout what I wanted to do byplanting the hedges in the stadi-um, Nick said. I had to get ap-proval before moving forward

with the project and to make sureI could use it as my Eagle Scoutproject.

The addition of the bulldawgcame unexpectedly as Nicksmom, Tracy, found the fiberglassstatue in an antique store. After abit of refurbishing, the bulldawg

was donated to the school by theteam after last years state cham-pionship.

I thought it was a good addi-tion to the field and the stadium,Nick said.

    His teammates thought thesame.

They told me it was prettycool to have it in the stadium,Nick said. Its cool to have some-thing modeled after Georgia.

The installation of the bull-dawg, hedges and pedestal are tocommemorate Haddonfields 2013state football championship.

Nick has achieved the rank ofLife Scout in Haddonfields BSATroop 65, and a major require-ment in earning the rank ofEagle Scout is to lead a projectthat will be long lasting and bene-

188 hours, 60 hedges and one huge bulldawg

    Special to The Sun

For his Eagle Scout service proj-ect, Haddonfield Memorial HighSchool sophomore Nick Batemanbeautified the end zone at thehigh schools stadium. The proj-ect included building a pedestalfor a six-foot bulldawg statuedonated by the football team.

    The Camden

    County Freeholder

    Board and the

    Camden CountyAnimal Shelter

    want to share the

    joy of pet owner-

    ship with our Vet-

    erans. Camden

    County Pets4Vets

    provides shelter animals to veter-

    ans at no fee.

This program is a small thank

you to our Veterans who have

selflessly served our country. It isalso a great way to help find a lov-

ing home for our shelter pets. The

program is open to all active mil-

    itary, reservists or veterans.

    Camden County residents meet-

ing the criteria of the program

    will have their adoption fee

    waived.

    Shelter pets make great com-

panions and make a great addi-

    tion to your home. Camden

County is a very animal friendlyplace. According to the last cen-

sus, as many as 70 percent of our

    countys households have either

    a dog or a cat.

    The Camden County Animal

Shelter is located at 125 County

    House Road in Gloucester Town-

ship. Please visit the shelter if

    you are considering adopting a

dog or cat for your family.

    While there, you may notice

    some exciting changes taking

    place. The Freeholder Board is

    undertaking a $1.5 million expan-

sion of the Camden County Ani-

    mal Shelter.

    When completed, the facility

will have a dedicated area where

    residents can interact and adopt

    pets. The improvements to the

Animal Shelter will house an ad-

ditional 30 dogs and 50 cats. The

    improvements will

    include a new

    adoption wing that

will serve as thepublic side of the

    animal shelter.

    The Camden

    County Freeholder

    Board has made a

    commitment to

treat homeless animals in a hu-

    mane manner because we believe

it is the right thing to do. The

county has taken a holistic ap-

proach to animal managementthat includes the coordination of

    the Camden County Animal Al-

liance- a network of animal shel-

    ters located within the county

    working together to reduce the

    total animal population.

    They encourage the adoption of

    a regional standard municipal

    ordinance for animal manage-

    ment that embraces

    trap/neuter/release, a humane

effort to stabilize the feral cat pop-ulation. These efforts will even-

tually lead to the decrease in

stray cats, along with lower mu-

    nicipal animal control costs and

    intake at shelters.

The residents of Haddonfieldhave spoken: They are in favor ofselling the boroughs water andwaste-water utility systems toNew Jersey American WaterCompany Inc. for $28.5 million.About 65 percent of the voters

    chose yes for the municipalquestion.

I was mildly surprised; thenumber for the sale was strongerthan I thought. I am very pleasedthat it passed overwhelmingly,Mayor Jeff Kasko said.

The sale of Haddonfieldswater and sewer utility systemshas been a long, contested issuein the borough.

Before 2003, very little was in-vested into the water and sewersystems. If things broke, theywere fixed, but nothing systemat-ic was replaced, even when theyhit their expected service life, offi-cials said. Things werent failing,so the decision was made by pastcommissioners to keep the taxeslow and not invest in the infra-

    structure.However, since 2003, commis-

sioners realized the system wasgetting worse and money neededto be invested into it. Since then, the debt had accumulated toabout $16 million. The commis-sioners then made the decisionthat it would be in the boroughsbest interest to call for bids for thesystems.

In May, bids for the sale of thewater and sewer systems cameback with NJ American Waterhaving the highest bid for the util-ities at $28.5 million. This wouldcover the $16 million debt the bor-ough had invested in the utilities, leaving $12.5 million for the bor-ough to use in other projects.

    Some citizens who attended

meetings leading up to last weeksvote voiced their concerns thatNJ American Water would in-crease rates dramatically, ignorethe senior citizen discount pro-gram and take a long time to getback to citizens if they had anissue. They thought taking thecontrol of the water systems out

Residents vote in favor of sellingboroughs water, sewer systems

Its an accomplishment for anillustrator to get a deal to illus-trate a bookright aftergraduatingcollege. How-ever, it is an-other thing fora student com-ing straightout of high

school to get toillustrate abook. AysenGerlach, a 2014graduate ofHaddonfield Memorial HighSchool, did just that.

When Gerlach ran into a fami-ly friend, Beth Levin, at the sum-mer Haddonfield Crafts and FineArt Festival, she introduced Ger-lach to Trudi Clark, who had a

booth next to hers. Clark toldLevin she was working on a chil-drens book for which she neededan illustrator. When Levin recom-mended Gerlach, she and Clarkspoke about the book and her vi-sion, and the rest fell into place.

I was incredibly excited, a lit-tle overwhelmed, Gerlach said.

Gerlach illustrated for Clarksbook Willy The Bully, whichcame out in early October. Willythe Bully is about a young bullynamed Willy who meets a boy

who wants to be a bully like him.In the end, the boy teaches Willy alesson instead.

I hope many people get achance to read Willy The Bully! Its a very sweet story with an im-portant message for children,Gerlach said.

Gerlach has always been intoart, coming from a family ofartists. She has been drawing foras long as she can remember.

t first glance, the early results

    of last weeks midterm elec-

    tions show a nationwide back-

lash against President Obama and the

    Democratic Party.

    For the second straight midterm

    election, Republicans earned signifi-

cant victories, this time flipping at

least seven seats in the Senate to their

    side. Three incumbent Democratic

senators lost their re-election bids, in

    North Carolina, Arkansas and Col-

orado. Four other states Iowa, Mon-

tana, South Dakota and West Vir-

ginia also changed party hands from

    Democrat to Republican. And results

in Alaska, Virginia and Louisiana arestill out, as of this writing.

The Senate victories now give the

    Republicans full control of Congress,

with its majority in the House of Rep-

    resentatives being its largest margin

since World War II. In addition, Repub-

lican governors won election or re-

election in key states such as Ohio,Wisconsin and New Mexico, in Mary-

    land a traditionally Democratic

state and in Illinois, Obamas home

    state.

Data such as this would make one

think that voters are unhappy with the

    performance and direction of the

White House. And thats probably ac-

curate. Early exit polls found that

Obamas approval rating is down 10

points versus 2012, and more voters

said they were voting to show opposi-

tion to Obama (34 percent) rather than

support for him (20 percent). More

people also have an unfavorable view

of the Democratic Party than a favor-

able view (53 percent to 44 percent).

But even more people have a nega-

tive view of the Republican Party (56

percent) than a positive view (40 per-

    cent).

So what gives? Voters made a state-

ment directly to Obama with the

    midterm elections; they seemed to

vote against Obama instead of for the

    Republicans. Republican supporters

    could spin that to say its not true;

    Democratic supporters could say

things will change in two years when

    Obamas out.

In the meantime, we can all expect

two more years of jarring in D.C. with

not much getting done, since the Re-publicans in Congress will most likely

clash with Obama in the White House.

Voters are not happy, but who are

they most unhappy with? Thats some-

    thing the prognosticators will debate

heavily for the next two years, before

the next big national election in 2016.

    in our opinion

Voters dont like anyoneMidterm elections, early exit polls show discontent across the board

came my most preferred outletfor doing that. It wasnt until mysophomore year of high schoolthat I began pursuingit more serious-ly, Gerlachsaid.

At the begin-ning of highschool, Gerlachhad no idea whatdirection she want-ed to take her life. However, at Haddon-field Memorial HighSchool, in KarenActons art surveyclass, Gerlach becameheavily immersed in art and real-ized she wanted to pursue it.

I owe almost all of my artisticcareer to my teacher KarenActon. Shes an incredibly en-couraging and inspirational

teacher. My teachers Allie Wester-side and Floyd Hughes were alsoimportant influences on me; theyboth kept me pushing myself pastwhere I thought my limits were,

    Gerlach said.Gerlach has stretched herself

by illustrating thisbook, as she had alot to learn. Gerlachfirst had to work oncommunicationand compromisewith Clark soboth of theirartistic ideascould shinethrough. Theartists wantto, of course,

satisfy theirclient, but also keep true to

their art and style.Another thing Gerlach learned

was illustrating a book is quitedifferent than most visual art.Rather than thinking of the illus-trations as 16 individual pictures, they really are one connectedpiece.

Its a lot of work! Theres a lotof things to take into account, such as where the text goes on thepage, how to make what youretrying to communicate most clear

to readers, keeping things visual-ly appealing to children, etc. All ofthe pages have to have a harmonybetween them that keeps themlinked. Seeing the finished prod-uct is incredibly gratifying, Ger-lach said.

She is excited that her workwill be experienced by a large au-dience. Rather than just family, friends and teachers, childrenand their families can now expe-rience her work.

Gerlach is attending the PrattInstitute in Brooklyn where shemajors in illustration. She is alsoworking on Clarks second bookcalled Baby Fat.

[email protected] of Haddonfields hands would notbe the wisest decision.

NJAW offered a three-year ratefreeze, and has agreed to continuethe boroughs senior discountprogram for 10 years for seniorsalready in the program.

However, despite some of theconcerns of citizens, the Nov. 4election came back with a majori-ty of the citizens saying yes tothe sale. According to the unoffi-cial results from the CamdenCounty Board of Elections, 2,509of the voters said yes and 1,377said no.

I am very pleased with the re-sults. I think voters came out ingood numbers and made the rightdecision. The water and sewersystems will be in better handsgoing forward, and I believe this

is an excellent result for the bor-ough, Commissioner JohnMoscatelli said.

    According to Kasko, the bor-

ough will still be running the sys-tems until about February orMarch, as the transaction processwill take about two to threemonths to be completed. No deci-sion has been made as to what theborough will do with the $12.5million since the transfer of thefunds wont come until the clos-ing of the transaction. However, the money must be used towardborough debt.

The commissioners have dis-cussed three different options sofar. Since the money must be usedtoward debt reduction, we canuse it toward straight debt reduc-tion, toward the tax collectedmoney to reduce taxes or be usedtoward other projects like theroads program, Moscatelli said.

In the Haddonfield SchoolBoard election, the three seatsopen were filled by the unopposed

candidates Heather Paoli with32.93 percent of the votes, GlennMoramarco with 31.81 percent ofthe votes and Michael Hansen

with 31.74 percent of the votes. In other area elections, Demo-

cratic incumbent Cory Bookerwon re-election for his U.S. Senateseat over Republican candidateJeff Bell.

In the House of Representa-tives first district election, Demo-crat Donald Norcross defeated Re-publican nominee Garry Cobb.Norcross won 59.46 percent of thevote compared to Cobbs 36.97 per-cent.

Camden County Board of Free-holder Democratic incumbentsLouis Cappelli Jr. and Scott Mc-Cray also won re-election. Thepair defeated Republican nomi-nees Teddy Liddell and KimoneSmith. Cappelli and McCray com-bined for 62.9 percent of the vote.
