#weloveourlakelife The WHO, WHAT & WHEN of Beautiful Lake Jordan:

spotlight . . . on Kim Adams

Who is Kim Adams? Kim Adams and her husband, Vince Adams, re-

cently jumped feet first into active participation with the Lake Jordan HOBO

Association and we are thrilled to have them. Married for 29 years, they are proud

parents of two sons; Christopher Adams (SSgt in the USAF, stationed at Mildenhall AFB in England) and

Jacob (Jessie) Adams who lives in Titus and works for the City of Montgomery. They are faithful members

of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Elmore and share their home in Sears Slough with their

lab Molly, cocker spaniel Sophie, and two kitties Lettie and Gisele.

In addition to her shared Area 3 representative responsibilities with Vince, Kim has recently accepted

the position of Membership Coordinator for the Lake Jordan HOBO Association. An internal auditor for

Alabama Power for almost 32 years, Kim also serves on the Elmore County Children’s Policy Council

and sits on the advisory board of the Elmore County Partnership of Children.

Kim first came to know Lake Jordan in 1972 when her father, a member of the USAF, rented a camper

lot on Jordan Recreation Island. They enjoyed their vacation spot on the lake until the early 1990s. In

1988, Vince’s parents bought a cabin in Holiday Shores, which they still own, and Kim and Vince bought

their “piece of paradise” in June 2013. If you’re counting, that’s a total of 46 years on Beautiful Lake Jor-

dan!

When asked what her favorite season on the lake is, without hesitation Kim goes straight to “4th of

July.” She loves celebrating the holiday with a large crowd of guest and heading out on the boat to Jor-

dan Dam for the annual HOBO Fourth of July Fireworks Show.

She appreciates the lake’s year-round water and the close net family atmosphere, but if she could

change one thing about our lake it would be the amount of trash. She attributes the HOBO Association

for the wonderful job done every year

during the annual clean-up, but encour-

ages everyone to pick up trash as they

see it and keep the lake clean year-

round.

As for Kim’s greatest memory on Lake

Jordan, that’s easy. She and Vince had

their first date on Lake Jordan and luckily

many more followed. It’s apparent their

love for each other and Lake Jordan re-

mains beautiful to this day.

Lake Clean-Up 2018

Lake Jordan HOBO Association inconjunction with Alabama Power’s“Renew Our Rivers – The Coosa”campaign has scheduled our annuallake clean-up for Saturday, April 14,2018.If you are interested in keeping

Beautiful Lake Jordan beautiful, please mark your calendars now andplan to join us. We encourage allHOBO members to participate andto invite friends and family that enjoyour lake throughout the year.If you would like to volunteer,

please contact Allan or Brenda Bas-night at #334-399-7370 [email protected].

LAKE CLEAN UP is now scheduled for

April 14, 2018 due to Alabama A-day game.

As the weather starts to warm up and we emerge from our caves (soto speak), some of us will likely realize that the basic cleaning routinewe go through every week is mostly just scratching the surface. Spring isa time of rebirth and renewal; why not make that go for our homes aswell? Spring cleaning is a time-honored ritual for a reason - the fresh airand greenery outdoors make us want to prettify our indoor spaces too. Itjust makes us feel better. But if the mere thought seems overwhelming, here are a few tips to get you started.1.The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and sodawater. The bubbling action of the soda water combines with theabrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner. Don’t forget tomove your refrigerator out from the wall, sweep behind it and vac-uum the coils. Your refrigerator will last longer and cost less to op-erate.

2. The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet it is tolay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar and let it setfor an hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove.

3. Clean window screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a pow-erful brush that removes all the dirt.

4. Clean windows with a rag and soapy water, and then dry themwith another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store and buy awindshield squeegee, which cleans very well.

5. If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, removethe hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in the dryeralong with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 minutes. Hangthem back in the windows immediately.

6. Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a coat offurniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff.

7. Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don’t need to becleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long winter inyour closed-up home. Take them outside and hang them on aclothesline for a day if possible.

8. Machine wash all bed pillows (recommended at least twice ayear). Add ½ cup of baking soda with your regular detergent to thewash. Remove and place them immediately in the dryer with twotennis balls covered with socks to fluff.

9. Clean your shower drain. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down thedrain then ½ cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a wet cloth for 5minutes. Uncover and flush the drain for 5 minutes with hot water.

10. Think your dish washer is clean because it basically gets a bathevery time you run it? Think again. But it’s an easy fix. Place a cupof white vinegar in the top rack (sitting upright). Run a cycle on thehottest setting and you’re done! Don’t forget your coffee pot orKeurig too. Run a cycle of white vinegar and then one or two cy-cles using hot water only to completely flush.

It’s Spring, Let’s Clean!

If you own a boat and/or dock, take steps nowto help prevent a tragedy. The Energy EducationCouncil’s Safe Electricity program recommendschecking your boats and docks annually beforeboating and swimming season commences. In prior years there have been devastating acci-

dents near boats and boat docks both locally andthroughout the country. In July of 2012, a 26 year-old woman was swimming with family in the Lakeof the Ozarks and was electrocuted when shetouched an energized dock ladder. That sameyear, a 13 year-old girl and her 8 year-old brotherreceived fatal electrical shocks while swimmingnear a private dock on the very same lake. Offi-cials cited an improperly grounded circuit as thecause in both cases. In Tennessee, two boys, ages10 and 11, lost their lives as they were shockedwhile swimming between house boats on Chero-kee Lake, a result of an on-board generator currentapparently entering the water through frayed wiresbeneath the boat. An important step in helping prevent such

tragedies is to ensure proper installation and main-

tenance of electrical equipment on your docks andboats. Take the time now to inspect all of the elec-trical systems you own that are on or near thewater before Spring is upon us. Safe Electricity in partnership with the American

Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the Interna-tional Brotherhood of Electrical Workers/NationalElectrical Contractors Association recommend tak-ing these steps before boating season begins:

1) At a minimum, all electrical installationsshould comply with article 553 (residentialcode) and 555 (commercial code) of the2011 National Electrical Code which man-dates a ground fault circuit interrupter(GFC) on all dock receptacles. A GFCImeasures the current in a circuit. An imbal-ance of that current, such as a discharge intothe water, will trip the GFC and cut thepower.

2) A GFC should be tested a least once a monthor per the manufacturer’s specification. TheGFCI should be located somewhere along

Page 7: H O B LAKE JORDAN HOME OWNERS AND BOAT OWNERS … · plan to join us. We encourage all HOBO members to participate and to invite friends and family that enjoy our lake throughout

the ramp to the dock so it can be easilyfound and tested by local fire departments asneeded.

3) The metal frame of docks should “bondingjumpers” on them to connect all metal partsto a ground rod on the shore. That will en-sure any part of the metal dock that becomesenergized because of electrical malfunctionwill trip the GFCI or the circuit breaker.

Even if your dock’s electrical system has beeninstalled by a licensed electrical contractor and in-spected, neighboring docks can still present ashock hazard. Ensure your neighbor’s docksideelectrical system complies with the National Elec-trical Code and has been inspected. When it comes to your boat’s electrical system,

particularly those with onboard generators, keepthese tips in mind:1) If you are unsure how to install something,do not call your neighbor/electrician friend.Call an ABYC Electrical Certified Tech.

2) Household wire is not suitable for use onboats as houses are motionless and generallydry. Even marine-rated wire that is not sup-ported along its length will break with con-stant motion stress.

3) Do NOT use wire nuts or splice connectors.Wire nuts are for solid conductor wire, which should never be on a boat, and spliceconnectors cut wire strands.

4) Fuses are rated to protect the wire, not thestereo. If a fuse blows continuously, itshould NOT be replaced with a larger onejust to keep it from blowing again – some-thing else is wrong.

5) Have your boat’s electrical system checked atleast once a year or whenever something isadded or removed from their systems.

These helpful hints have been provided by theEnergy Education Council.

According to Alabama NewsCenter, a recordnumber of bald eagles have been counted on Ala-bama lakes this year. Alabama Power employeescounted a record 35 bald eagles on five companyreservoirs during the annual nationwide midwintersurvey in January. Surveys were conducted on Logan Martin,

Smith, Harris, Lay and Martin in early January. Twelve bald eagles were counted at Logan Mar-

tin (six adults and six juveniles), which is a recordnumber for APC reservoirs. Nine bald eagles werecounted on Lay Lake (five adults, four juveniles);nine at Lake Martin (six adults, three juveniles);five adult eagles on Smith; and none were seen at

Harris Lake. Active nest wereseen on Logan Martin, SmithLake and Lake Martin. Bald eagle surveys are con-

ducted across America duringJanuary because it is peak nest-ing season for the national bird.APC has voluntarily participatedfor more than 25 years. More re-cently, the surveys became aFederal Energy Regulatory Com-mission requirement as part ofrelicensing company dams.Although the bald eagle is no

longer listed as an endangeredspecies, the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protec-tion Act requires a 660-foot protective buffer zonearound an eagle nest tree during the October-Maynesting season; a 330-foot buffer is required duringnon-nesting periods.Overall, the bald eagle population appears to

be increasing statewide and on APC reservoirs. Thenumber of juvenile eagles recorded this year washigher than in previous years according to Biolo-gist Chad Fitch, which indicates that companylakes have suitable nesting habitat and a goodfood resource. http/www.alabamanewscenter.com/2018/02/08

Why is boat speed measured in knots? The custom of measuring a boat’s speed in knots comes

from the old method of throwing overboard a small plank at-tached to a line with regularly spaced knots tied into it.Speed could then be easily deuced by counting the numberof knots that passed through one’s hands in a given time. One common method for measuring the time was an hour-glass set for 15 seconds (1/240 of an hour). If the knots werepositioned at 1/240 of a nautical mile, or 7.72m (25.3 feet)apart, the boat’s speed could then be read directly in nauti-cal miles per hour.
