Fabric and fashion designer Jill McDonald’s successful
career reaches as far back as 1967. Recognised by
her peers for introducing hand painted fabric and
innovations such as the bikini, Hawaiian muu-muus to
the Sunshine Coast, Jill is now semi-retired from fashion
and can be found in her studio in Tin Can Bay creating
decorative collages, paintings, bikini and Hawaiian
muu-muus, home decorations and hand painted fabrics
and silk scarves.
Fresh local produce, historic buildings, winding country roads and too many swimming spots to pick from; there’s more than meets the eye in the Gympie region. Find more information at visitgympieregion.com.au.
Did you know recreational gold panning is only available in a few places across Australia? All are welcome to try their luck in the Gympie gold fields, just as our earliest settlers did in 1867. Fossicking licences for the Deep Creek Fossicking Area and equipment are available for hire at the Lake Alford Visitor Information Centre. Happy panning!
Quietly concealed in the Woondum National Park, the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools day area is the perfect family friendly location for a BBQ and a swim in shallow waters.
Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, local growers and producers sell their fresh-picked harvest direct to the public from 3pm to 6pm at River Road Marketplace. There’s fruit and vegetables, seafood, smallgoods, preserves, skincare, sweet treats and much more on offer. Be quick – many stallholders sell out fast!
For Gympie region locals or even those interested in family history, a Gympie Family History Society Cemetery Crawl night might be for you. Bring a torch along for a night out at Gympie cemetery, researching family heritage and historical plots. The Gympie Cemetery Burial Register dates back to 1869.

Beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and too many fishing spots to pick from, there’s more than meets the eye in the Gympie region. Find more information at visitgympieregion.com.au.
The quiet shores of Tin Can Bay are a perfect place for would-be sailors to test their tack. Book a houseboat, join a fishing charter or hire a beginner’s hobie cat for a day to discover the protected waters of the Bay. Have breakfast with the resident dolphins – Mystique, Patch and Squirt – who are waiting to be fed at the marina from 7am every morning.
Take a journey through time on the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail. This 88km recreational country trail follows the historic Kingaroy Branch Railway Line between Kilkivan and Kingaroy.
Once a month, Smithfield Street in the Gympie Town Centre comes alive with live music, street performers and gourmet food trucks. Enjoy a night under the stars in the revitalised Town Centre, or bring the family down for a night out at one of Mary Street’s many restaurants.
You won’t have to scramble for a spot along the Great Sandy National Park – with kilometres of open white sandy beaches, there’s lots of choice when it comes to throwing in a line. Rainbow Beach and Cooloola Cove are popular spots for open ocean fishing. Wash away the salt with a dip in the freshwaters of Seary’s Creek on the way home.
