PRINCIPAL’S REPORT I have heard wonderful reports from our students that have returned from the Great Aussie Bush Camp. Thank you once again to Mr Kite and Mrs McAlister for spending the week away from their families to take the excursion. As demonstrated at the Fete our staff go “above and beyond” the call of duty to support our students. Sun protection At this time of year it is particularly important that students wear hats when playing outside. Students currently have the option of wearing one of the following styles of school hats -broadbrim, bucket or cap. At last weeks P&C meeting is was proposed that the broadbrim hat be made a compulsory part of the school uniform, and that other styles be banned. Given that there were only a few parents represented at the meeting I welcome broader discussion and feedback. Perhaps it can be an item for discussion at our parent school planning workshop next Thursday.

Primary playground Funds raised at the Fete have been targeted to improve seating and shade in the primary playground. A committee met this week to discuss the options for the playground, and the placement of pavers from the previous P&C fundraiser. Keep an eye out for our new improved playground area. Anzac Centenary Tour 2015 We are very excited to be sending a Merriwa Central School student on the Anzac Centenary Tour in 2015. It is a fantastic opportunity for one of our students. Our fundraising is moving along steadily with Brian Selby approaching local business houses for support. We need to raise the deposit of $4400 by March next year to secure the berth. If you would like to support this fantastic opportunity donations can be made to Merriwa Central School, or speak to Brian about the program.

Our biennial fete which was held on Saturday 29 October was again a great success, thanks to all those in the community who supported us on the day – without you all the hard work would have been in vain. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank every one who helped out on the day, whether it was setting up, manning a stall, packing up or cleaning up – your help was greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank all those people who sold raffle tickets for the Monster Trailer Raffle, to Hunter Mutual for being the major sponsor for the raffle and to all the business houses and individuals who donated goods and services to the raffle. Congratulations to Fiona Wightman on winning the Monster Trailer Raffle.

Congratulations also to the winners of the cake stall raffle: Deidre Peebles – Winner of the iced

Christmas Cake – Donated by Fiona Wightman

Leanne Hook – Winner of the Christmas Pudding - Donated by Maree Goodear

Thank you to both Fiona and Maree for their kind donations and also to Eva Towler for selling the tickets for the cake stall.

In order to finalise all the accounts from the fete and get a profit figure, I would like to ask that if any stall holders have any dockets that they need to hand in could you please do this as soon as possible. It will be great to finalise this so that we can allocate funds to the rejuvenation of the area at the primary site where the old admin demountables were removed.

More thank you’s and details next week.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

It’s almost half way through term 4 and Cassilis has been enjoying some lovely smiles and hard-working students. We are a school were students must feel safe. This week, we are revising how we stay safe at school, the importance of speaking to the teachers and our parents if we feel unsafe and listening to Constable Singh on Friday. Kindy Orientation Kindy Orientation continues tomorrow from 9am-10:30am. It’s great having Noah and Isabelle at our school and they are quickly learning routines and already show fantastic behaviour. Year 7 Orientation Year 7 Orientation to Merriwa Central concludes this Thursday. I heard great reports from the year sixes last time they went, especially about how cool they thought the science equipment was. Students need to catch the bus to Merriwa from Cassilis in the morning and return the same way after school. AAS Thank you to Miss King for providing afternoon tea last week and for Miss Hodgson assisting with the coaching. It was brilliant to have Tom

O’Neill back again and great to meet Cam Armstrong. We are very lucky to have lots of talented role models in our community for our children. Thank you both very much for your expert tips! Active After School continues tomorrow with Mrs Leman and Mrs Nairne coaching and Miss Bell providing afternoon tea. Reminder that AAS concludes at 4:15 pm and all students need to be picked up at this time. Remembrance Day This Friday, Remembrance Day (11 November), marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Consequently, out school captains will lead a short assembly at 10:55am. During this assembly, they will read our some verses then the whole school will participate in one minute silence to show respect to the men and women who fought and continue to fight for our country. During this week, the students will be learning more about the history of Remembrance Day during their lessons. Please take the opportunity to discuss what the day means to you. Students may like to bring some flowers to place under the flag pole. Police Visit Constable Singh will be coming to Cassilis this Friday at 11:30am to educate our students further on the issues of road safety, stranger danger, being honest and appropriate touching. It is vital that our children continue to hear these important messages about safety.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Kindergarten has had a very busy year at St Joseph’s Merriwa. As we approach the end of the year the children are very excited at the prospect of being Year One students. They had a wonderful practise run in Miss Sullivan’s class last week and all came back to Kindergarten feeling very grown up!! When we talk about the weeks left until Year One we get very excited.

We have had so much fun this year and here are some of the things we have been doing this term: We all love our Reading Groups. During Reading Groups we get to work with our

wonderful parent helpers or on the Smart Board or with Mrs Peebles. We are reading so well and get so excited when we get a new book.

In Science we have been learning about weather. We have been keeping a class weather log on the computer as well as learning to read the weather symbols in Newspapers and online websites. We were very excited to see how we could go onto the internet and find out what the weather would be like in Merriwa on the weekend!

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties as well as time. We have become whizzes at telling the time on the hour!! We have also been adding numbers together and recording them in our books. We

are also b e c o m i n g very clever at ordering o u r n u m b e r s a n d counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

During HSIE we have been deciding what are our wants and needs. We all know the things we really want but have decided on the things we really need. Like clean water, basic food, clothing, shelter, love and a little money. We also have been discussing the wants and needs of others and how they differ depending on who they are and where they live. We don’t think living in an i g l oo i n Merriwa is a good idea! In Sport we have been working on our Gross Motor and Tennis skills. We are all enjoying the various activities which we have been participating in on a rotation basis. We have also become very good at the Daily PE activities and follow the instructions of our year 6 leaders to participate in a variety of activities. One of our favourites is the Fruit Salad game. We are

looking forward to starting our swimming lessons and the swimming carnival in the last week of term.

In Art this term we are looking at A n i m a l movement. We have b e e n looking at artworks by

Eadweard Muybridge and Gabriel Orozco to learn about the ways animal movement can be expressed through art. We have made a wonderful paw print collage and we are in the process of attempting to make a Paper Mache bird which will hang from the ceiling.

In Music this term we have been learning h o w d i f f e r e n t instruments make different sounds. Mrs Peebles tries to trick us and makes us close our eyes. But we are all too clever for her. It has been a wonderful 2011 in Kindergarten at St

Joseph’s Merriwa and we are excited about our last few exciting weeks of fun and learning!

DIRECTOR’S REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2011

Parents….We need your help. We are in the midst of preparing a reflective document called our Quality Improvement Plan, (to be ready by April 2012) which is part of our new requirements under National Quality Standards. Followed by this being submitted, an assessor will attend our service for a day, look at our plan, observe and speak with all staff, then give our service a ranking. In order to prepare our Quality Improvement Plan, we need to first look at the following areas of our Pre-school, and with your input, decide upon these areas that we do well, and those which we could improve further. The areas are :

Educational Program and Practice Children’s Health and Safety Physical Environment Staffing Arrangements Relationships with Children Collaborative Partnerships With Families and Communities Leadership and Service Management

We have put a pink cardboard rectangle on the notice board with these 7 different areas written on cards that can be moved around by you (according to whether you think it is a strength, or area needing development) and / comment may be written on them by parents. As parents have been with us for at least a year now, we’d really like to know your thoughts on

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL

the areas we need to focus more on. We look forward to talking with you about these. Staggered Enrolments for Monday /Tuesday / Thursday Starters in 2012 - Our Youngest Groups - As part of staff having more time to focus closely on settling children in at the beginning of the year, we plan on having our newest enrolments starting in week 2 of 2012. These starting dates will be reinforced on Orientation Day. Last year these staggered enrolments proved to be a great success. Re-enrolments (those currently attending) will begin in week 1 as per the starting date written on their new enrolment form which they will soon receive. Dates for Christmas Parties We have had some enquiries already about the dates for our end of year party/ concert days. Please mark these on your calendar: Monday 5 December 2011 (Week 9) Tuesday 6 December 2011 (Week 9) Wednesday 14 December 2011 (Week 10 –

Combined Wednesday and Friday Groups Thursday 15 December 2011 (Week 10) We are inviting parents to be responsible for the buying, preparing and serving of food for these parties (morning tea). Just one day would be a great help, with the help of a friend. Please see staff if you can help.

Parent Exchanges for Parents of Children who will move on to Kindergarten in 2012 - This is an opportunity for parents of children who will attend school in 2012 to meet with myself to go over their child’s collected child study information, with the opportunity to share information. Every year, parents seem to enjoy this opportunity to discuss their child’s progress. Parents are encouraged to phone or drop in to add their name to an appointment time as soon as possible. Parents have received an individual note about this. Please book if you haven’t done so already. Monday 7 November 2011 (Week 5) Wednesday 9 November 2011 (Week 5)

Friday 18 November 2011 (Week 6) Many Thanks We thank Grace Booth’s Grandmother, Shirley Booth for kindly sewing some rugs for our use at pre-school. Inservice Days There is so much change happening in the field of Early Childhood. Last week after Pre-school I attended a training session on just one of the areas to be addressed in the National Quality Standards (mentioned above) – Cultural Diversity. We looked at ways we can incorporate our ‘Merriwa’ culture into our service and will continue to look for ways to do this. We’d welcome any input from parents.

The importance of updating our Centre’s Philosophy with input from everyone (children, parents, staff, Committee) was discussed and soon to be developed further, as well as many other ways to reflect diversity within our service, some of which we are already doing. On Tuesday of last week I attended an Information Session in Newcastle dealing with the new Children’s Services Regulations which are directly linked to the National Quality Framework as well as policies. I hope to soon share some of this information with other staff, as an important part of the process of ranking our service will involve our assessors asking questions of all staff. There is so much to share and reflect upon amongst our staff, as one of the principles we are embracing is reflective practice…looking at what we do and why and perhaps looking at a different way of doing it. Orientation Day New parents have now received information via Australia Post in relation to our Orientation Day planned for Thursday 24 November 2011. We look forward to meeting all new children and parents. A reminder to please phone to let us know if you are able to attend or not. We are currently full on all sessions

PHOTO TIPS & TRICKS ALL ABOUT MEMORY CARDS

Another accessory you should purchase is a spare memory card. Most cameras are sold with a ‘starter’ memory card that is usually a low capacity card that’s enough to take a few sample photos on, but not enough for day-to-day use. A memory card is the little removable piece of plastic that your camera uses to store your photos. Memory cards come in different sizes and names such as Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD), Memory Stick (MS), Smart Media (SM) and xD. Running out of memory on your card is a little like running out of film in a traditional camera. Rather than purchasing a new film to take more shots though, you move your images to your computer or a CD and re-use the same memory card. Purchasing extra memory cards is a good idea if you’re on a vacation and want to ensure you can store all your photos. Fortunately, prices of memory cards have come down dramatically in recent times

Another feature to keep in the back of your mind when purchasing a new memory card is the card’s speed. The faster your memory card speed, the faster your camera can write its image to the card, and the quicker you can take another photo. The actual speed will be the lowest of either your camera’s fastest transfer speed (see your camera’s manual) and the memory card’s speed. If your camera can transfer at 40X speed, but your memory card can only handle 12X, 12X will be the actual transfer speed. Note that some cameras ignore the card’s speed and write as fast as possible all the time.

Memory cards, although they seem to be small and flimsy, can be quite robust. I’ve dropped one of my cards in a glass of coke and it has survived – although I don’t recommend you do this! It will also depend on the brand of card you purchase. More expensive cards tend to withstand more pounding. Most memory cards will withstand a small amount of misuse, but like any electronic components, take good care of them and they will serve you well.

HUNTER NATIONALS SUPPORT MINING OMBUDSMAN

A Mineral Resources Ombudsman could become reality if the Hunter Nationals get their way. At the NSW Nationals State Conference over the weekend, the meeting unanimously passed a resolution to support the Hunter community and its concerns around the issue on mining and coal seam gas. The resolution passed in three parts and states, That the Nationals Conference: Support the NSW Liberals & Nationals

Government in developing a strategic land use policy that seeks to strike the right balance between agriculture and mining;

Acknowledges the concerns of many regional communities about the potential impacts of mining, particularly coal seam gas; and

Support the appointment of a Mineral Resources Ombudsman, to be responsible for educating landholders and private citizens about their rights in relation to mineral exploration and extraction and representing the public interest by investigating and addressing complaints in relation to the industry.

The resolution was moved by the Young Nationals and supported by the Nationals Spokesperson in Hunter, Michael Johnsen. "This is a significant move forward for the Hunter communities and will provide independent information to address concerns for all parties. "In conjunction with the current work on the Upper Hunter Strategic Land Use policy, we are finally starting to see some real action and over time, I am confident that a balance will be struck that allows the Hunter to build on our lifestyle and provide great opportunity for future generations", Mr. Johnsen said. For further information please contact Michael Johnsen on 0419 696 756

DR STOKES

More and more I think we are living in a culture of disempowerment. We are constantly given excuses for not coping. We are told how stressful our lives are. We are told that it is too hard to stop smoking without the assistance of drugs or counselling, that we are incapable of losing weight without operations, weight loss programs, personal trainers. When we behave badly we are told we have mental health problems which take away our responsibly for our actions. When we fall over we blame someone else.

Unfortunately, although individually it can be comforting to be told that nothing is our fault, the result of this general attitude for our society can only be negative.

The truth is that humans are uniquely designed for stress. We have nervous systems and hormone systems which equip us to handle all the stresses which have traditionally been thrown at us. These include far greater challenges than most of us in our Western civilisation (where we generally have somewhere to live, have enough to eat, are able to feed, clothe and protect our children) will ever face.

The truth, in fact, is that historically we have achieved our best in situations where we are

under threat. As humans our ability to adapt and to rise to the occasion is the main reason for our success as a species.

Undermining our faith in ourselves is actually extremely damaging. As a culture, telling us that things are too hard and providing excuses for failing does not do any of us any favours (although it does provide employment for many people we then require to prop us up.) If we expect nothing of ourselves it is likely we will achieve nothing. Because our feeling of self-worth is dependent on our achievements, by limiting our expectations, we are actively crippling ourselves. What a shame.

We are going to run another diet program at the beginning of next year. This is not simply for those who want to lose weight but also for those who wish to be healthier, those who are unhappy with their current state of health or are concerned about future health, those who want to have more energy, take less medication, everyone who actually wants to be in control of their own health. It will be rather like a three month detox, with the aim of showing you how well you can feel if you eat as nature intended.

Anyone who would like to enrol needs to contact Carol on 6532 5013. It will not be complicated. You will be given advice and then left to follow it yourselves, with backup only as required.

We have an Antenatal Clinic every Thursday to assist anyone who is having difficulty travelling to Muswellbrook, Scone, Mudgee or Newcastle for their regular appointments. We also have an immunisation clinic on Thursdays. Appointments can be made by phoning Carol on 6532 5013

MERRIWA-THE EARLY DAYS

Mahngarinda On your next trip to the Merriwa rubbish tip take the opportunity to look at the view. When you are travelling down Depot Road past the Cemetery you are looking over the same ground which attracted the attention of George Wyndham 181 years ago. Armed with the approval to select four square miles as a Primary Grant, he selected the ground before you.

His grant, which he named Mahngarinda, extended from the Merriwa River in the west, to well over Flags Road in the east. This encompasses most of the catchment of Wyndham Springs Creek. Dalwood, near Branxton, which he purchased privately, was his primary place of residence. He was busy turning part of this estate from a grazing run to orchards and vineyards, some of the vines for which, he had obtained from Gregory Blaxland. Dalwood was to become well known and today Wyndham Estate Wines memorialises his contribution to its establishment. Later he took up a squatting run on the Richmond River near Kyogle and another called Bukkulla near Inverell.

Mahngarinda is possibly the least known of his properties. Although he was authorised to take possession at any time after 15 October

1831, he did not do so until Jan 1833. We know this because George Wyndham kept a detailed journal which is now available on-line at the NSW State Library website. His men set off at this time from Dalwood with a dray and 1073 head of sheep. This was really the date of his occupation and start of the task of establishing a new estate. By 1841, when the census was taken, it records that there was a sandstone house at Mahngarinda, one of the very few in the district at that time. (The only others were at Collaroy, Terragong and Cockrabil, the remaining large estates having timber houses.)

Mahngarinda was sold to Charles Blaxland in early 1846, and subsumed into his expanding estate of Cullingral.

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES Workers in Reserved Occupations (and obviously the physically unfit) were amongst those not allowed to join up during WW2. For instance, many food producers, those working at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory or helping manufacture Beaufort bombers were of more use there than in one of the Armed Services. One of my uncles managed a large irrigated vegetable production enterprise on the Lachlan River at Cowra, and though he tried to volunteer he was rejected because he was in a Reserved Occupation. So he successfully enlisted under a false name, but the police soon tracked him down and told him not to do it again because, while he would never be allowed to join the army, if he persisted he could finish up in jail. I was determined never to be conscripted so I had intended to volunteer for the AIF as soon as I turned 18, believing I would get parental approval. However, about mid 1944 one of my school mates told me that when he left school at the end of that year he was going to join the Navy. I said: “Don’t be silly, you’re still only 16”, but he assured me the Navy would accept him at 17. That set me thinking because I would turn 17 on 21 October 1944, and perhaps that date was symbolic as it was the 139th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. So, when I left school in mid-December I told my parents I wanted to join the Navy, and after they had recovered from the shock, and thought about it for a month or so, they said yes. This set in train a long bureaucratic process since, as I eventually realised, the Navy not only had plenty of volunteers and were therefore not in a huge rush to take me, but were also in a position to be very choosy about the physical standard of those they accepted, and this was reputed to be second only to Air Crew in the RAAF. So I wrote to the Naval Recruitment Office in Sydney and an eventual reply told me to return a signed parental approval form then go to my local doctor (Coonamble, about 160 kilometres away) for a medical, both of which I did, and then waited another month or more. Finally I was advised that I had passed the preliminary medical and I must now get a Reserved

Occupation clearance from the Department of Manpower, or some such organisation. In Sydney this Department would no doubt have occupied many floors in a very large building, but out west our Manpower Officer was Constable Burton, a well liked policeman at Carinda. I remember he asked my father whether he could manage without me, and he said he had done so for quite a few years in my absence, except when I was home during school holidays. Therefore he thought he could survive without me for another year or two, that being the period most people thought would elapse before both Germany and Japan threw in the towel, so Constable Burton signed the paper. Another month or more went by, and eventually I received a train voucher and a request to attend the Naval Recruitment Office in Loftus Street in the CBD in Sydney on a certain date, and I presented myself along with about 40 or 50 others. We sat around outside on ancient sandstone walls in the sunshine all that day and the next, being summoned from time to time for various reasons, and I know I almost failed the medical because of, for all things, flat feet. I overheard a discussion about this between two Naval Doctors and one said: “He’s OK otherwise, and he won’t need to do much marching!” and the other turned to me and said: “Can you swim?” and I said: “I can swim a mile or more, and I’ve done that many times!!”, they both laughed and I knew I was in. So, in late afternoon of the second day (May 1 1945), those of us who had passed were lined up and sworn into the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, handed our call up papers, and the atmosphere changed from “Please do this or that” to “Do this or that!!”. We were told we were now legally bound by King’s Rules and Admiralty Instructions, to report to the Rail Transport Officer at Central Station no later than 4pm the next day, that failure to do so would constitute being Absent Without Leave, or possibly Desertion, so we had better be there on time, or else. I never heard of anybody failing to turn up, what would be the point, we had not volunteered only to change our minds, so that night we all left on the Overlander which at that time was also troop train as required,

hauling as many troop carriages as were necessary with comfortable double deck wire bunks. In those days the railway gauge changed at Albury so we swapped trains after breakfast, and on that cold early morning it was announced that Germany had finally surrendered. This was not greeted with any particular joy or enthusiasm since everybody knew Japan was Australia’s main enemy and, knowing nothing of the atom bomb, thought there was still a long way to go to war’s end, so we all climbed back onto the train and by about midday we were at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne.

Our fundraising is moving along steadily with Brian Selby approaching local business houses for support. We need to raise the deposit of $4,400 by March next year to secure the berth. If you would like to support this fantastic opportunity donations can be made to Merriwa Central School, or speak to Brian about the program.

MHEG NEWS Welcome to more news from Merriwa Healthy Environment Group. As well as being the best food- producing land in Australia, Merriwa Plateau is also home to many endangered species of plants and animals. They shelter mainly in the Goulburn River and Coolah Tops National Parks which are the major conservation areas on the Plateau. Along with smaller State Parks and private conservation lands, these areas provide refuge for brush-tailed wallabies and quolls, broad-headed snakes and diamond pythons. Endangered birds such as beautiful regent honeyeaters and turquoise parrots can also be found there, plus powerful owls and barking owls, co-existing with iconic species such as koalas and kangaroos. One of the unique plants you can see on a visit to Goulburn River National Park is the graceful red/ orange floral emblem of the former Merriwa Shire, Grevillea Johnsonii. You can buy this from plant nurseries, to grow in your garden. Other endangered native plants growing on Merriwa Plateau include Ozothamnus Tesselatus, more commonly known as the yellow rice flower, and Homoranthus Cernua, which has pretty hanging bell-shaped flowers. Phone Mudgee National Parks and Wildlife office on (02) 6370 9000 for more information on restrictions for growing these plants. These precious plants and animals are living on Merriwa Plateau because the ecosystem is

perfect for their health, growth and reproduction. The temperature, rainfall, soil, air and water are all ideal. If you pick up endangered species from any location, then put them down into another ecosystem, it won’t work - they will not survive. People from near and far are telling the State Government this at the moment, as it has approved a system of “biodiversity offsets” based on the assumption that this type of relocation system will work. “Biodiversity offsets” are intended to preserve larger areas of land, of equivalent type, to that destroyed by commercial activities such as open-cut mining. In the case of endangered species, however, these offsets will achieve nothing: their main threat is the loss of their specific habitat. It is imperative that the conservation lands already present on the Merriwa Plateau be preserved, as part of Australia’s heritage - and as recharge areas for the aquifers of the Plateau on which we all depend.

SEVEN BILLION AND COUNTING It has been estimated that, sometime within the past few weeks, the world’s population has ticked over the seven billion mark. It seems we’re populating the world at an ever increasing rate. Fifty years ago there were about three billion of us. In half a century we’ve had to find room for more than twice the number of people within the same available space. So getting fat will become an even less comfortable option. Of course, being comfortable is probably one of the least of our concerns. Being overweight has some serious health implications Put simply, the cause of being overweight is too much energy in, and too little energy out. That is too much food, too little exercise. However, whilst the underlying cause of obesity is much more complex, the resulting problems are well known: most commonly type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, social exclusion and low self esteem. Worldwide, diabetes is fast reaching epidemic proportions. In fact, diabetes is the fourth main cause of death in most developed countries. In 1985, the best data available suggested that 30 million people had diabetes. Fast-forward 15 years and the numbers were revised to just over 150 million. Today, just another 11 years on, new data show that a staggering 300 million people are living with diabetes. In the next generation that number is expected to rise by a further 200 million. The latest figures from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas indicate that people in low and middle-income countries are bearing the brunt of the epidemic.

However, we Australians are certainly not immune. Studies show that nearly one in four Australian adults either has diabetes or so-called impaired glucose metabolism which is associated with a substantial risk of diabetes and heart disease. Diabetes is a condition where the body can’t use glucose properly – usually because of a lack of insulin or so-called insulin resistance when the body fails to respond to its own insulin. Insulin is the chemical messenger or hormone that controls the uptake of glucose by muscles, liver and fat tissues. In type 2 diabetes, which accounts for about 85% of all people with diabetes, insulin is still produced but for some reason it doesn’t work effectively. While it most often affects mature adults, more and more younger people, even children, are getting type 2 diabetes. It’s very much a lifestyle disease, and more young people are getting type 2 diabetes because more young people are getting fatter sooner. Clearly achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important; but being a ‘big loser’ with respect to weight doesn’t mean your new lower weight will be easy to maintain. New Australian research, published recently in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine has shown that, once we become overweight or obese, hormone changes reset what our body thinks is the ‘normal’ weight at this heavier level. It is much easier, therefore, not to become overweight in the first place. And if you need to lose weight, take it slowly. According to the Australian Diabetes Council website by losing just 5–7% of excess weight and participating in

RELAY FOR LIFE Relay For Life is now only a few weeks away. Book in Saturday December 3 and the following Sunday morning, and yes, bring your tent or swag. Be prepared to have some fun during this outdoor overnight fundraising event that brings communities together to celebrate and remember the lives of those who have battled cancer. Teams take turns to walk or run (I know I'll be walking!) around a track whilst enjoying entertainment, activities a n d m o v i n g c e r e m o n i e s . Everyone can get involved in Relay For Life. Some people do it in memory of a loved who has passed away from cancer. Some people do it to show how proud they are at having survived cancer. Some use it to show they are strong enough to beat cancer. And some just want to be involved and make a difference. Whatever your reasons, you'll never forgot your first, or your second Relay. There are no restrictions when it comes to Relay. It's about getting involved, regardless of your motivation and being part of something great. Teams are usually made up of 10 to 15 people and headed up by a team captain. You don't have to be over 18 to get involved and you don't have to be fit - anyone can do it! So get a team together! There are now 12 teams entered for Merriwa’s Relay. Early Bird registration is $15.00 if you register

by 19 November. After the 19, registration will be $20.00, so get in early and register now!

I think I've mentioned it before, but for your chance to win one of 3 double passes on a Wine Country Ballooning experience, register for Relay For Life and send in a Shop A Docket to the Cancer Council with your name, address etc. (Terms & conditions apply). Shop A Dockets will be available from Merriwa Hardware. Passes will be drawn at the Merriwa Relay For Life. An invitation is extended out to those who have lost a loved one to cancer, to bring in photos for the remembrance service.

Miss Relay will be held again this year, so to those who entered last time, enter again and throw down a challenge to someone you know. Got your frock ready? Let's see if we can get together another bevy of beauties.

I've been approached to see if we can do the steak hut for the campdraft this month. A brilliant idea as all profits will go to Merriwa Relay For Life. The Campdraft is being held on the weekend of 18, 19 and 20 November. If you think you could spare a couple of hours to volunteer in the canteen, please see Max McNaught for the roster.

Who will you relay for?

MERRIWA DISTRICT EDUCATION FOUNDATION

It is that time of year again where students who wish to apply for funding with their tertiary studies in 2012 need to get their application forms in. The closing date for the Merriwa District Education Foundation is 31 November. Applications are available from the Country Education Foundation Website (http://www.cef.org.au) by clicking on the Merriwa District Education Foundation. We are also holding our annual general meeting on the 25 November and would like to invite anyone who is interested in the Foundation to attend. Merriwa District Education Foundation AGM 25 November, 2011, at 6.00 pm, RSL Merriwa. Everyone Welcome Included in this article is a recent report from Kirsty Inder one of the students who we have sponsored this year. It is always rewarding to hear how they are going. Kirsty’s Report This year was the third and final year of my Bachelor of Business. The majority of the subjects I have/am completely this year have been electives and all have been based around my two major of Human Resource Management and Management. It has been a very full on year with more intense subjects and lecturer's expectations of actually remembering studies from previous 2 years. This year has also been more practically based, with one subject in semester one involving spending time in a workplace for the whole semester to develop a report with recommendations based on an issue identified by your workplace supervisor. The organisation I was matched with was Tomago

Page 35: g{xç á{tÄÄ ÇÉà zÜÉã ÉÄw? tá ãx à{tà tÜx Äxyà zÜÉã ÉÄw? Tzx ... · The Ringer will resume in 2012 on Thursday 2 February. The deadline will be 12 noon Monday

MERRIWA RINGER Thursday 10 November Page 35

Aluminium and my report was for their Human Resource Department addressing the issue of succession management. I really enjoyed being out at Tomago and learning about the organisation and how they operated. In addition to my studies I also participated in a mentor program run by the Faculty of Business and Law called the LUCY Program. It's focus is on getting women into the workplace and specifically into higher level positions. I was partnered with NIB and one of their executives Melanie Kneale and spent 35 hours during the semester break in their Newcastle head office. The program can be conducted any way you and your mentor agree and my time was spent learning about the organisation and each of their different divisions, talking to many different employees, especially females about their career paths, and also spending time with Melanie and learning what your position entails.

It again was another fun and interesting practical experience of being in the workforce. This year has also entailed applying for countless graduate programs, getting many declines, undertaking a few interviews/assessment centres and surprisingly a job offer. Subject to my final results this semester I will be commencing a 12 month full-time graduate position within Westpac's RBB division from January next year. I will be based in Tamworth and although I'm not 100% sure of my job title/description I believe I will be a part of their Agribusiness team in Tamworth for the majority of the year.

LADIES GOLF NEWS

Great weather brought out a large contingent of lady golfers to compete for the last monthly medal of 2011. Although some ladies were a little tired after the previous days Melbourne cup celebrations everyone completed the 18 holes of golf enthusiastically.

Welcome back to Lyn. It was wonderful to see Lyn back out on the course after her recent bereavement and we hope that the occasional game of golf and the company of others will help.

A few of the girls had satisfactory rounds with Didie’s 78 nett, Captain Di’s 75 nett, and Mary’s 74 nett amongst the better ones. Congratulations however go to Gay who won the medal with a very nice 73 nett on a countback from Sue. Gay was unaffected by the rough and putted well to have an easy day of it.

Mary secured the nearest the pins on both the 9th and 18th holes and De found the green on the 13th. The ball draw was won by Libby.

The official winter competition has been completed for the 2011 season and we will be starting the summer competition on 7 December. Golf will still be played every Wednesday with some interesting variations planned for the next couple of weeks.

Remember that the start time has been brought forward to 8am as the warmer weather has arrived. That means on the tee by 8am so allow plenty of time to assemble clubs and pay to play. Looking forward to seeing everyone bright and early at the course!
