First, PA LOTTERY RAFFLE TICKET STUBS AND MONEY…. And/or any UNSOLD tickets…
all have to be returned by the June Gathering… If you won’t be at the June Gathering and have tickets, stubs
and money to turn in, please contact Lee Little and/or me to arrange a time and place to get them turned in to
us. The chapter is responsible for them which means WE PAY for whatever tickets are unaccounted for in
the block of tickets allotted to us. As a reminder, every ticket sold brings a portion of the sale price back to
the chapter treasury. The District gains and so do we! Last year our chapter sold tickets that got us over
$160 back to us. This helps us meet necessary chapter costs like our GWRRA annual membership dues,
working funds for purchasing chapter patches, pins etc for our goodies store. This is the only fund raiser we
have this year. Your efforts are important to the chapter well being! Thank you.
May found our chapter quite active with various events. First, we said our sad goodbyes to two
valued long time friends and members, Craig Famous and Darlene Dusza. Their special contributions of
time and talents to our chapter will be felt and remembered for a very long time. Many Y folks attended the
PA District Rally in State College and had a blast riding in the area, participating in the fun activities,
admiring the incredible “light” show, gaining 3 more Roll for Dough points, and most of all, gaining more
rider/co-rider knowledge from the many seminars offered each day and working upwards in the GWRRA
Levels Program. Some of us have already reserved our room for next year’s rally at the same location.
Memorable rides to Kaufman’s Chicken Ranch (this one proved our claim as the chapter that rides!) and the
Wolf Sanctuary were well attended. Many of our chapter members went to Americade… can’t wait to hear
about all the events and bling purchases made there. Some supported our nearby Chapter A as they
celebrated their 35th
Anniversary, enjoying great friends, food and super weather. June 18 weekend will
find some at Gettysburg enjoying the riding around that area. I’m going to jump in and ride part way to Pine
Grove area for lunch and then return home… anyone else want to join in? Chapter Y continues to make a
valid claim… “We are the Chapter that Rides!”
Hope you’ll be around for our June 25 Gathering and ride after to Penn’s Peak Roadies for lunch. Its
always a favorite, for the ride there, the location and the food. June 26 has a bunch of Y folks riding to
Bloomsburg for the Chapter H Dice Run and BBQ. This too is a great scenic ride, super food and lots of fun.
Chapter Y does love RIDING, near and far!
With all this riding we’re doing… I’ll steal or reiterate our Rider Ed’s directive… TCLOC those
bikes regularly and ride safe.

From The Assistant Chapter Director… Michael Silverman, Assistant Chapter Director
Barbara and I attended the 34th Annual Americade Rally last week in Lake George, NY. It
was our second time since 2010 and it was wonderful. For Americade, the weather was superb
but the fellowship with several others from Chapter Y made it the best motorcycle event we’ve
experienced to date and the riding was excellent.
So many from Chapter Y attended that I’m a little afraid to mention names in case I mistakenly leave someone out, but here goes. In attendance were Jim & Jean Parker, Russ & Elaine Kriebel, Bob Cox and Catherine Green, Raven and Vivian Myers, Jeff & Pam Kratz, Jay & Debra Keck and Barbara and me. If I missed anyone I am sure one of the others will be sure to mention all who attended if they submit an article or email. We ran into Dave Buchert, and saw others we knew from other chapters.
The weather was cool early in the week but the rain held off for the majority of the time with interludes of rain…typical for Americade. Raven and Vivian led rides on two consecutive days. The first day was about 233 miles full of beautiful Adirondack eye-candy as we journeyed past Schroon Lake, Long Lake, other lakes and more lakes…and then to Lake Placid where we had lunch. Afterward he led us up to Whiteface Mountain but the entrance was closed upon our arrival. So, we drove another beautiful route back to Lake George along Lake Chamberlain. Not to be deterred, next day Raven led a hearty group of riders back to Whiteface Mountain again and made it in time to climb to the top. They returned very much elated but I will leave the description of that trip to one of them.
Some of us stayed in town at the Georgian Hotel while others stayed just outside at Country Inn Suites, the Clarion and Gray Motel. Most evenings many of us got together for dinner at the Log Jam, Marios (twice) and JD Montana restaurants for fine dining and fellowship. My only frustration, that I voiced on CB Channel 1 as we passed by so many beautiful lakes and ponds, was that I hadn’t thought to bring my fishing pole. But Jeff replied that he spent his down time fishing in the Vendor pond….so the next time you see him and Pam next to their white steed take special notice of how much BAIT he lost. The vendors were somewhat fewer than when we were there in 2010 but still enough to wear out your legs walking half the day or more visiting them all. BJ, from Montgomeryville Cycle Center, was among the vendors there and we enjoyed lots of conversation with him as well as giving up some more bait. The Parkers were also big winner from a drawing for a premier NE motorcycle trip this summer. Everyone expressed serious interest in returning again next year as this rally really tops them all.

Reading The Heat… Doug Little, Chapter Educator Hello Chapter Y
With the ups and downs of the temperature and humidity I have been asked to review hot weather riding as these changes have not been gradual but somewhat abrupt at times catching us by surprise. As our riding is in full swing and longer rides being planned, it is very possible to have a quick onset of high temperatures and high humidity. Let’s review Reading The Heat. Please take a few moments to read the symptoms and the corrective measures listed below. We should always be watching out for our fellow rider especially during extreme circumstances.
Can you Read the Heat? Not everyone can. When the riding season gets in full swing we will be at the beginning of the hottest part of the riding season. We have to watch out for heat related illnesses such as Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke. Everyone should be looking out for each other as the ride goes on, as you can not always tell when you are being affected by the heat, humidity and dehydration as early as you think you would. Let’s discuss the symptoms of these heat related illnesses and how they may affect us.
Heat cramps are painful muscular spasms that happen suddenly usually immediately after exertion. They usually involve the back, leg and abdominal muscles.
Heat exhaustion is characterized by heavy perspiration with normal or slightly above normal body temperatures. It is caused by water and/or salt depletion. Symptoms include severs thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes diarrhea. The person often mistakenly believes he or she has the flu. Uncontrolled heat exhaustion can evolve into heat stroke.
Heatstroke is characterized by two types: classic and exertional. Classic heatstroke, also known as the “slow cooker,” may take days to develop. It is often seen during the summer heat waves and typically affects the poor, elderly, chronically ill, alcoholic or obese. Those who have medical problems and are frequently afflicted, this type of heatstroke can cause a 50% death rate. It results from a combination of a hot environment and dehydration. Exertional heatstroke is also more common in the summer. It is frequently seen in athletes and laborers or anyone who often sweats profusely. This type of heatstroke is also known as the “fast cooker.” It affects healthy, active individuals who are strenuously working or playing in a warm environment. Because its rapid onset does not allow enough time for severe dehydration to occur, 50% of exertional heatstroke victims usually are sweating. (Classic heatstroke victims are not sweating.)
What to do for corrective measures: Heat Cramps – To relieve heat cramps (it may take several hours), follow these steps:
1. Rest in a cool place. 2. Drink lightly salted cool water (dissolve ¼ teaspoon salt in a quart of water) or a commercial
sports drink.

3. Stretch the cramped muscle.
Heat Exhaustion 1. Move the victim immediately out of the heat to a cool place. 2. Give cool liquids, adding electrolytes (lightly salted water or a commercial; sports drink) if
plain water does not improve the victim’s condition in 20 minutes. Do not give salt tablets; they can irritate the stomach and cause nausea and vomiting.
3. Raise the victim’s legs 8 to 12 inches (keep the legs straight). 4. Remove excess clothing. 5. Sponge with cool water and fan the victim. 6. If you don’t see any improvement within 30 minutes, seek medical attention.
Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately! Every minute delayed increases the likelihood of serious complications or death.
1. Seek immediately medical attention, even if the victim seems to be recovering. 2. Move the victim immediately out of the heat to a cool place. 3. Remove all clothing down to the victim’s underwear. 4. Keep the victim’s head and shoulder slightly elevated. 5. The only way to prevent damage is to cool the victim quickly and by any means possible.
Cooling methods include the following: Spraying the victim with water and then fanning. The water droplets act as artificial sweat and will cool through evaporation. This method is not effective in high humidity (more than 75%) conditions. Place ice bags against the large veins in the groin, armpits, and sides of the neck to cool the body regardless of the humidity.
As you see, being able to Read the heat plays a big role in the knowledge and safety parts
of our rides. Keep an eye on your fellow riders and co-riders. If you need a cool down break make sure you radio to the ride leader that you need a break quickly. Remember to wear light colored clothes, be well rested, make sure you are properly hydrated with water and/or sports drinks. Take a small cooler along on the ride. Use neck wraps when necessary and keep some extras in your cooler. By avoiding heat illnesses your ride is much more enjoyable. Take a look at the weather forecast for the day of the ride and hydrate yourself accordingly the night before and the morning of the ride.

MOTORIST AWARENESS… Doug Little, Motorist Awareness Coordinator
Motorist awareness is now included with the Rider Education Program. The following is the new description from the home page of GWRRA.
The Motorist Awareness Division and Rider Education Program, through a Team effort, are committed to a goal of establishing the safest motorcycling environment possible. While Rider Education trains and educates motorcycle riders, the Motorist Awareness Division (MAD) will focus on educating the motorist community. Our primary goal in motorist awareness will be to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes with other highway users, a reduction in the loss of life, and a reduction in injuries.
A New Era in Motorist Awareness - A Simple Plan ...
The Motorist Awareness Division of GWRRA, through a "Share the Road" campaign will pursue three aspects of motorist awareness. Each of these three are supportive of each other:
Awareness Education - Providing motorists with First Class, professional education through our certified seminar presentations. Our presentations will be developed for a multitude of audiences, educating them to a better understanding of motorcyclists, the risks involved, a heightened awareness of motorcycle presence and what they as motorists can do in the prevention of crashes.
"Drive Aware!"
Awareness Advertisement - Serves as a reminder to motorists that they share the road with motorcycles. Reinforced reminder to the education aspect.
Public Relations - Interaction with the motoring public has the ability to reflect highly on GWRRA and to mold public opinion on how they view motorcyclists.
Our goal in this area is to build a rapport with motorists and leave them with a feeling that motorcyclists are real people who could be their friend, neighbor, or even a relative.
The Motorist Awareness Division has already begun working with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and other organizations within the motorcycling community. Communications and the sharing of information between us and these organizations helps build our programs, sets the stage for success and benefits the entire motorcycling community. FROM THE TAILPIPE… Jeff Kratz, Ride Coordinator Well we finally got some decent riding weather this past month and were able to get most of our scheduled rides off as planned. The Boyertown Museum, PA 125, Conowingo Dam, District Rally, Kauffman BBQ and Wolf Sanctuary rides are all in the history books. Unfortunately the May 1st Chapter M Hobo Stew ride didn’t fare as well. It was rained out. All-in-all not a bad percentage given our April statistics. Hopefully June will be another banner month with a positive batting average. A few of the rides last month reoriented us with riding in the heat and how those first couple of hot days can catch you off guard. We’re not adjusted to the heat yet and often forget the basics of warm weather riding. Now that we’ve had a taste of what God made air shirts, air jackets, air pants, cool wraps and Baker Air Wings for, we’ll be better situated for the upcoming “Dog Days of Summer.” Normally drinking excess amounts of water leads only to more bathroom stops, but as we all know water is what keeps us hydrated and on-our-game in the heat. Keeping the sun off your skin is another important part of avoiding dehydration and heat exhaustion. Remember, keeping covered keeps you cool! Over the next month we have a bunch of great rides on deck so don’t forget to keep your eye on the website calendar (http://www.gwrrapa-y.com/calendar.html) for updates and important information. As always, we’ll be e-mailing information weekly as each ride approaches, so watch your e-mail. Roadies, Chapter H’s Dice Run, Waterman’s and the Jigger Shop are all on tap over the next four weeks so T-CLOCK those machines and get ready to roll! Before I close I have to put a shout out for Americade 2016. We had 17 Chapter members (that I know of) attend. What a blast! It was such a great week. The events were awesome, the roads were picturesque, the scenery was breathtaking and the camaraderie was off-the-chart! Some really great memories were made with a great bunch of Chapter friends. Even a few raindrops couldn’t dampen the experience! Bravo Americade 2016! I’ll close with wishing everyone a safe, healthy month. Hope to see you at the gathering on the 25th. MEC Corner… Pam Kratz, Member Enhancement Coordinator
With everything going on last month I apologize I didn’t submit a newsletter article. So as for this month, look out! I’m making up for it!
As a Membership Enhancement Coordinator, I am always talking with people in the Chapter and in the community. If you ride a Goldwing and there’s an opportunity to promote GWRRA, then we’ve probably met. I’m passionate about our organization and subscribe to the mindset, “If you’re living it, promote it!” We’re very fortunate to have a ride schedule that allows us to get out, have fun and meet new people! We’re also fortunate to have such gifted ride leaders, tail-gunners and ride participants! That’s what’s so amazing about who we are and how we ride. With that, we have opportunities to travel safely as a group to some of the most amazing places. That said, here we go with the rest of my article!
The Saturday after the District Rally we traveled to the Kauffman Chicken Ranch for lunch. It was a hot day, but a beautiful ride and a great lunch. The following weekend we traveled to the Wolf Sanctuary of PA. What an amazing place! The resident wolves are rescued from all across the country! I never knew there were so many breeds. They’re beautiful, have such personalities and the story behind each one of them is simply fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, particularly their howling when we went to leave. It was almost as if they wanted us to stay. If you ever get a chance to visit there, please take advantage of the opportunity. The preserve is completely funded through donations and visitors support.
By far, the best trip of the month was to Americade! I totally enjoyed the time we spent with our fellow Chapter Y Americaders! Jeff led the ride up and Raven tail-gunned. We had 5 bikes towing trailers and those two kept us safe the whole way. The weather was beautiful until we arrived in Lake George. We made it to the host hotel to pick up our registration packets and a storm hit. It was short lived but packed enough punch to get us good and wet on the mile ride we had to our hotel. Some of our members stayed at other hotels so we kept in contact and hooked up at the Expo (lots of goodies added to our bikes), ate together and grouped up for a few self-guided rides.
Jeff and I want to thank Raven and Vivian for leading the self-guided rides! Their knowledge of the area took us to some really cool places. I always wanted to see Lake Placid and Raven made sure we did, not once but twice! We ate lunch there Thursday and had a fantastic meal. Raven took us around a number of lakes in the area where the roads and scenery were simply breathtaking. Friday he led us to Whiteface Mountain. At almost 4,900 feet above sea level, you could see almost a hundred miles. Absolutely incredible! I’m so glad we went. What an unforgettable ride! It was amazing and it’s an absolute must see if you’re ever in the area! I’d definitely put this one on your bucket list of things to do!
There were plenty of photo ops that day and we all took full advantage of it! After a beautiful ride back we meet up with the majority of our Chapter members for dinner at Mario’s. Awesome food! And after dinner, fireworks! What a spectacular show. I can’t wait to go back again. There was so much we didn’t have time to see, and rides we didn’t have time to do, it will make going back even more exciting! So kudos to all our Chapter Y members for a great showing at Americade and a super fun week! It was so much more fun being with all of you!

I will say I donned my GWRRA garb every day and I talked to anyone who would listen to my sales pitch! If they asked a question about our Gold Wing or GWRRA, by the time they left they had quite an education! Ha!
Moving forward, we have plenty of rides planned this season. So hop on that bike and join us when you can! And if you go, don’t forget to thank those that lead and tail gun for us because without them, we would not have such safe rides! They are so essential to our organization! That said, a big thank you to Mike Silverman for tail-gunning on our way home. With 4 bikes towing trailers in the pouring rain it was no easy feat keeping us together and safe!
My hope is next year we can have even an even bigger showing at Americade. Not that 17 members wasn’t enough, but the more the merrier! Don’t hesitate to talk to one of the Americaders if you want more information or visit their website at http://americade.com/.

From the Web Side… Dan Reisinger, Webmaster Volunteering… (or What did I get myself into?)
I was reading the Northeast Region B newsletter for June 2016 by Tom and Renee Wasluck, Northeast Region B Directors, enjoying the relating of the many events happening around the region. From the New Jersey Shady Maple Smorgasbord ride-in to Pennsylvania District Rally in State College PA to future events (Americade that just ended and Wing Ding that is in a few months).
While at the Pennsylvania District Rally our Chapter Director, Peggy Kratz, was approached by Rick Riek, Pennsylvania District Director, to consider volunteering to host the next All Chapters East Rally and the group that was at the District Rally openly discussed the responsibility and labor to pull off hosting such an event. So what does that have to do with “What did I get myself into?”?
I’m so glad you asked… One of the highpoints of Tom and Renee’s article was the closing paragraphs. It discussed volunteers and a GWRRA slant. We know that our Chapter TEAM and Staff are all volunteers and enjoy the positions they have accepted. I approached Peggy and Ron about maintaining the website before Chapter Y had their first gathering! I knew going in I was going to be learning “on the job” but what a challenge! I am sure this has been the experience of all the members of Chapter Y’s TEAM and Staff this first year. We have been learning “on the job”! By definition; volunteering according to Dictionary.com means: (noun)
A person who voluntarily offers him/her self for a service or undertaking.
A person who performs a service willingly and without pay.

Well, I think you get the idea by now. Tom and Renee’s article presented a deeper and more concise definition that stands out for GWRRA. GWRRA volunteers don’t just OFFER themselves or PERFORM a service willingly and without pay; but the TEAM and Staff GIVE of themselves, believe in something or an organization (GWRRA), and have a DESIRE to help WHEREVER needed! The TEAM and Staff members of Chapter Y that were at the PA District Rally have all those traits but also knew the limitations of our young chapter. The Team weighed the challenges over the past year that were conquered in getting a group together for Friends, Fun, Safety, Knowledge and the expectation of hosting the All Chapters East rally and found we still have some growing before we can meet that challenge.

The one thing I would like to relay is there is so much joy in volunteering with our Chapter TEAM! Realizing that everyone has to take care of necessities of life; working, family, health, and other obligations; the more volunteers that find they can do that one step more than offering themselves or performing services, makes it not just FUN but AWESOME! I can be a witness that you don’t have to be an expert with Chapter Y! EVERYONE that has ridden on “my” rides know several things:
We are going to get lost! EVEN with my GPS.
We are going to make at least ONE BIG “U” turn. EVEN with my GPS.
We are going to put on 50 more miles than the ride was planned on. EVEN with my GPS.
AND I am going to be kidded about the ride for at least the riding season! I wouldn’t have it any other way! And for the record I DO NOT PLAN these mishaps, they just present themselves more readily to me! If you can’t kid your family (and GWRRA Chapter Y is family from different mothers and different fathers LOL) and laugh, who are you going to be happy to be with? So next time you see an opportunity to be of service unconditionally – step right up and offer your hand! You don’t need to be an expert – we are all learning on the job!

Pennsylvania District Directors… Rick and Andi Riek
At this time, Andi and I are finally able to relax from all the hustle and bustle of putting the 2016 PA rally together. Now we can get ready to do some riding and camping if Mother Nature cooperates. We have the trailer emptied and everything put away from the District Rally and are looking forward to the summer riding season.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the PA District Rally in State College. We hope all of you had a great time. Andi and I surely did. It was great seeing a lot of friends that we haven't seen in a while. We spoke to a lot of our friends and everyone had a smile on their face and seemed to be having fun. And that is what the rally is all about. We also heard that some of you already made hotel reservations for next year. That is great news.
Mother Nature cooperated Thursday and Friday but not so much on Saturday and Sunday. We did see members putting on rain suits on Saturday and heading out for some rides. Every time we passed the vendor area inside and outside there seemed to be people looking at their wares. The vendors seemed happy with the turnout and stated they would be willing to come back next year.
We also would like to give a big thank you to the PA District Team for all of their hard work in helping put the rally together. Without their dedication, the rally would not have been as successful as it was. We truly appreciate all that they do for the district.
In case you weren't able to attend our rally, here are some of the highlights. We started out Thursday night with Cliff and Kelly presenting the Trivia Feud Game. This was an exciting and nail biting game. Every chapter team entered in the game came away with some very interesting prizes. Later was the light judging show for our Gold Wings. There were some beautiful lit up bikes for the judges to decide the winners. Friday night was the ice cream social and talent show. Some of the talent may have kept people from getting a good night's sleep to say the least. Saturday was our dinner banquet and awards ceremony. We had 281 meals served to members from Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, New York and New Hampshire. Friday and Saturday saw members coming to fill our seminar rooms. Thanks go out to all our excellent training staff.
Congratulations go out to our new PA District Couple of the Year John and Glenda Leib from Chapter PA K. We are excited to have them join our district team in August. If you see John and Glenda be sure to congratulate them on becoming our District Couple.
Above are just some of the highlights of the rally. If we covered all the fun we had it would take 6 pages to cover all the fun we had. This should make you want to come to next year's rally and join the fun!
Don’t forget to make plans to attend our PA District Rally in State College next May 17, 18, 19, 2017. It will be held in the same location, the Ramada Inn Conference Center and Golf Hotel. Hope to see you there for some fun, safety and knowledge.
Ok. Now that it looks like summer is finally here, let's plan on doing some safe riding. If you go to the district website at www.codynparker.com you will see all of the rides that the chapters have scheduled. I'm sure there are some very interesting places to go see. Maybe some places you have never been to before. I can't think of better people to ride with than Gold Wing people.

While we were at the rally, many chapters brought their sold district raffle tickets to give to
us. We thank you very much and keep up the good work. Keep selling those tickets. That gives us money to help with next year's rally.
We are looking for chapters to host our District All Chapters East and West. We may have a host chapter for All Chapter East. Someone approached us at the rally in State College and stated they may be interested in doing All Chapters East. Let's hope this works out. We will keep everyone posted on what's happening.
