How can we get more people to our shows?

How can we make our website more effective?

Where do

we start?

How can we get press coverage?

Why do people think our

chorus

is old-fashioned?

What about sponsorships and grants?

How do we get more members?

Making a Difference.“It’s only one night a week” – that is what many of us heard when

we attended our first chorus rehearsal. We all know that it actually develops into much more than that. So what keeps us coming week af-ter week? First of all, it’s the love of the music and performance. Secondly, it is commitment – the price we are willing to pay to continue growing in our craft.

Commitment starts in the heart. Some peo-ple want everything to be perfect before they are willing to commit themselves to anything. Are you really committed to do what it takes to make your chorus successful? Commitment is tested by action. It is one thing to talk about commitment and yet another to do something about it. Sometimes we think we are committed to something, yet our actions indicate other-wise. Commitment opens the door to achievement. If you want to get anywhere worthwhile, you must be committed. When it comes to com-mitment, there are really only four types of people:

* COP-OUTS don’t commit at all* HOLD-OUTS don’t know if they can so they are afraid to commit* DROP-OUTS quit when the going gets tough* ALL-OUTS set goals, commit to them and pay the price to make

them happen. How committed are you? Are you achieving all that you believe you

can? Everyone must be willing to sacrifice time and energy to practice and prepare.

Are you willing to pay the price?

Membership and Marketing Coordinator, Kathy Wright Directors Coordinator, Karen MeadeMy term as your regional Chapter Coordinator (ChC), as well as the

position itself, ends in April due to a reorganization of the Regional Management Teams by International. It’s been exciting, interesting, fun, and challenging to serve on the RMT for the past three years, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know some of the individual chapter leaders and learn from each of you.

Along with other responsibilities, the ChC duties have been transferred to the new Mem-bership Coordinator position. Karen Ridout, elected by the regional membership, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the RMT and will represent the interests and con-cerns of the chapter leaders and the general membership admirably. Please show her the same cooperation you’ve shown me, offer your help, and say “YES” when she asks for your as-sistance and input.

I’d also like to encourage more of you to share your expertise and creativity and become a part of Region 21’s administrative leadership. You’ll have an opportunity to learn more and expand your horizons at the same time that you share your unique perspective and ideas of how to make our region even better. And you’ll have a chance to work with an amazing and talented group of women who are equally committed to making Region 21 the best in the organization administratively as well as musically.

FIRST & FOREMOST—It’s not too early to mark your calendar for the next Director Workshop being held June 27-29, 2008. Our guest faculty will be the incomparable BETTY CLIPMAN! Good luck to all the competitors in the upcoming competition!

And now, a little goodbye note.I have been a Sweet Adeline for 26 years. Three years ago, I joined

the Regional Management Team and what an invaluable experience it has been. I have learned so much about the “behind the scenes” workings of our wonder-ful region. It has also been my great pleasure to work with the other members on the team. Believe me, your region is in good hands. I will be leaving my position to an extremely talent-ed and committed lady. You know her as the awesome bass of SparX quartet and an assis-tant director of the Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus – Andi Rostel. I know Andi will be a great addition to the RMT. It has also been an honor for me to work with the talented direc-tors of Region 21. I have come to respect each of them for the huge job they do, and the role they play in teaching and sharing their knowledge with us week after week. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve on your RMT for the past 3 years. With all my new spare time now, my husband and I have decided to travel a little more. Yea!!!

I’ll see ya’ around! Education Coordinator, Patty Cobb Baker

Got Coaching? Did you know that choruses can receive musical or administrative

training from your Regional Management Team (RMT) or regional faculty through the Internationally Funded Chorus Visits Program? This program assists the region’s educational efforts by funding the transportation of training personnel to the chorus rehearsal/meet-

ing. A total of 15 internationally-funded education visits to chartered chapters is provided each fiscal year. The Education Co-ordinator, in conjunction with the Member-ship Coordinator, is responsible for sched-uling the visits and assisting with selection of appropriate training personnel. If your chorus is interested, please contact me at [email protected]. The start of a new fis-cal year is the perfect time to begin develop-ing your chorus’ annual education plan.

Fiscal year 2007-2008 will bring FOUR outstanding regional education events to you and your chorus. First up in May is our Marketing Boot Camp Leadership Seminar, where you have the opportunity to receive stellar marketing training, with hands-on applications, from regional faculty who are marketing pro-fessionals. In July, Åse Hagerman will be our guest International Fac-ulty for Summer Seminar, themed “Express Yourself, Body and Soul.” In November, the inaugural Fall MusicFest will take place in Albu-querque. This one-day musical workshop will feature International Faculty Laura Pallas, director of the 2006 Harmony Classic small chorus 2nd place medalists, the Santa Monica Chorus. Finally, in February 2008, “the Buzz”, 2005 International Quartet Champions, will be our faculty for a fabulous regional Quartet Workshop.

Check the regional calendar for exact dates and stay tuned for up-coming registration information!

Another Sweet Adelines year is nearly at an end. I have taken time this year to reflect upon what the Sweet Adelines organization and Region 21 means to me. I’ve discovered there are so many opportunities available to

each of us! My life has been enhanced in so many different ways throughout my years of membership in our organization. The education provided to us is outstanding; not only musical edu-cation, but training to enhance our leader-ship skills as well. The

friendships we’ve made are truly unique and will be with us forever.

My hope for you during this next Sweet Adeline year is that you’ll take time to reflect upon your own Sweet Adeline life and dis-cover new opportunities for growth. Take time to nurture your friendships and to make new friends. Take advantage of everything your chorus has to offer. Become part of your chorus leadership or regional leadership. Take advantage of educational seminars offered to you by our region and by Sweet Adelines In-ternational. You just never know where these opportunities might lead!

Introducing a new opportunity – Gifting.I would like to introduce a new opportunity

for all members to participate in the success of Region 21. The Regional Management Team has established a “Gifting” policy to encour-age members to remember Region 21 in their life planning. There are many ways for you to participate in this opportunity. You can simply donate whatever you desire whenever you wish. You could remember Region 21 in your will. You could es-tablish a gifting plan wherein you agree to donate a specific amount quarterly, annually, or some other regular interval. You may desig-nate a specific use for your donation; e.g., edu-cation, trial scorers, arrangers, or you may just specify the general fund. If you are interested in pursuing any of these opportunities, please contact me, Charlene Neblett, Region 21 Fi-nance Coordinator at [email protected] or at 858-759-0468.

One of my favorite parts of Spring Regional is the competition itself, that moment in time when all the hard work we’ve been putting in all year long culminates in six minutes onstage.

It’s the opportunity to show all that we’ve learned...and get feedback on how we can improve our performance.

And, as we look to improve our craft, we don’t have to look further than the many educational opportunities available to us in Region 21.

First up is an amazing Leadership Weekend, May 18-20 in Ontario. We have heard the concerns of choruses of every size across our region and they’re looking for help in their marketing programs. Whether it’s reaching potential members, making shows more profitable, hunting for corporate grants, or making your presentation more professional, leaders across the region are looking for new skills and techniques. Our marketing boot camp, “Shock ‘Em and Awe ‘Em!” will give you an op-portunity to improve your marketing techniques and come away with

new materials for your own chorus.Next up is our spectacular Summer Seminar, returning to the Ontario Marriott on July 27-29.

Our guest faculty will be Åse Hagerman who will teach how to “Express Yourself, Body and Soul.” A vibrant instructor, Åse has been a director in Sweden since 1984 and directs the Alba Show Chorus. The weekend also includes the Region 21 Young Women in Harmony Contest and the always entertaining Double Quartet Contest – you know you’ll want to be there.

Have a great contest weekend!

Do You Have Questions?

Come getanswers! Come to the Region

21 Leadership Boot Camp with an

emphasis on marketing issues:

The San Diego Chorus has been busy – performing! With our return from International Com-petition in Las Vegas, we jumped right into our yearly refresher course in Christmas music. Kudos to Cherie Frame for coordinating the massive number of requests for Christmas performances: this is NOT an easy job! We all had wonderful performing experiences, many from first time re-questors. Highlights included Balboa Park’s “December Nights,” where we also earned a substan-tial sum at our food booth. Thank you, Kathi Rheinbold and crew! And, talk about free publicity:

a double quartet sang at the inauguration of the San Diego City Coun-cil, followed by a Page 1 color photo in the San Diego Section of the Union Tribune. We know it’s a challenge for every chorus to gain recognition within our communities. We’ve been especially pleased in the last two years to

have Debbie Van de Riet working like the dickens to get our name out there. Her hard work has paid off in so many ways!

January had us “Back in the Old ‘Competition’ Routine” doing what we like to do best: prepar-ing for contest. Now insert Singing Valentines – our best year yet. From dawn to midnight, we could be heard from the Mexican Border to Temecula, providing yet another opportunity to share our love of Barbershop.

The San Diego Chorus bids all of you a memorable competition in Phoenix. Isn’t Region 21 the best? You bet!

–Becky Eveland

Ontario provided a marvelous opportunity to work with Tori Postma. She is such a wonderful and inspirational musician! She made us feel like we could do anything–we had an exhausting but super experience!

The month of March was a busy one. In ad-dition to competition at the end of the month, we performed as guests of the Riverside Poly High School Music Department at a show on March 16, featuring their student chorus.

Hope to see everybody in Phoenix!–Karen Pritchard Choy

Take the Harborlites Chorus, add about 250 high school singers from Southern California, Arizona and Nevada, plus Debbie Connelly and Pam Pieson and what do you get? The 2nd An-nual Harborlites “Diva Day” Young Women in Harmony Festival.

The day-long educational event taught high school girls the basics of singing bar-bershop style, vocal production, singing their part and choreography with Debbie Connelly as our clinician. The event culmi-nated in a performance for the community including the young singers, quartets, and the Harborlites and Westminster men’s cho-ruses. The memorable finale featured over 400 singers on stage under Pam’s direction!

Speaking of shows, save the date for the Harborlites Annual Show: September 15th at the La Mirada Theater. Our special guests

will be Vocal Spectrum, the 2006 Barbershop Harmony Society International Champion Quar-tet. For more information on or about any Harborlites event, visit www.harborliteschorus.org.

Harborlites is proud to serve Region 21 as assistance chorus for the 2007 Phoenix compe-tition. We hope every competitor has a “peak” experience onstage and enjoys everything this weekend offers. We send special good-luck wishes to “our” quartets competing this Spring: Pipe Dreams, Sky High, a.k.a., Razz’matazz, Sweet Synergy, and Elation, all of whom competed in Region 11, and Orange Crush, Commotion, Three and 3/4, Vocalteez, Road Trip, Portfolio, and Q.com, all competing in Region 21. We also send special congratulations to Shimmer! and SparX, both concluding their Regional Championship year in style and harmony.

–Kathy Wright

Inland Empire Chorus members were mighty busy in December, as we usually are, but this year was a little different. In October we initiated a Christmas Chorus Recruiting Program. We invited women to sing during the holiday season to see if “barbershop” was their “cup of tea”. They participated in several mini-performances and two shows in Decem-ber; as a result, the chorus gained two new members who will be competing this year!

pearance at Acker Night, an annual tradition of en-tertainment all over the city’s historic down-town. For three hours the chorus held forth, entertaining appreciative standing-room-only crowds. Jerry Jackson, a popular columnist in the Daily Courier wrote:

“From the Opera House we gravitated across the street to the Hassayampa, where the Song of the Pines women’s choir was hold-ing forth exquisitely. Flawless harmony and synchronization produced a special vibrancy, with our favorite being a haunting rendition of ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain,’ which sent

tingles up and down the ol’ spine.”Nice comments indeed! Small wonder the

How exciting to be competing in the beau-tiful new Phoenix Convention Center! Speak-ing of moving...Fiesta is now rehearsing at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany at Price and Broadway in Tempe, Arizona. It is a great facil-ity and offers us room to store our risers as well as multiple break-out rooms. These rooms have come in handy during our many coach-

ing sessions with Pam Pieson, Becky Larson, and Liane Harper. We are very grateful that these ladies share their talents with us.

Thanks go to the many friends, family and fans that attended our annual show at the Chandler Center for the Arts the last Satur-day in January. The legendary Fiesta wacki-ness was evident and key to the success of the show. Special thanks go to our chapter quar-tets Cul-de-sac, Musique de Soleil, MatriX and Q.Com and featured soloists Susan Stew-art and Mary Branham. We’d also like to con-gratulate all of the participants of our annual Singing for Scholarships contest. How proud we are of Anthony Jackson, son of Fiesta tenor Darla Jackson, for winning the big prize!

Since you could be reading this before or after competition, good luck and congratula-tions!

Music was an important part of Judi Choquette’s life, from her appearance on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour with her sisters at age ten to her last rehearsal with Har-borlites before her illness. In the interim she sang with various school and church choirs and choruses until she found barbershop, which became a passion with her. She sang with Harborlites until the family moved to Phoe-nix. She was singing with Scottsdale when they won the gold medal at International in Detroit in 2005. The family moved back to California and Judi continued to sing with Scottsdale, but when the commute became too difficult, she rejoined Harborlites. Even when she was in hospice care, music remained an integral part of her life. She would listen to her favorite music: classical guitar, barbershop quartets, and, of course, her two choruses–Scottsdale and Harborlites. And one would imagine that in her mind she was on the fifth row riser–her favorite spot–singing and dancing and performing with gusto.

As music was an important element in her life, her contagious smile and cheery disposition were important parts of her personality. She lit up a room with her good humor and friendly smile. She could literally fill a room with a joyful sound, all the way to the back wall. Yet behind her playful sense of humor was a backbone of steel. Throughout her ordeal she never wavered in her faith, and her indomi-table spirit kept everyone going. She had even purchased an AET to Calgary. Such was our friend and riser mate–Judi Choquette.

–Celene Pierce, Harborlites Chorus.

SAN DIEGO CHORUS BRINGS HOME 6TH PLACE MEDALS FROM LAS VEGAS In Memoriam

Dianne “Dee” DeFrank was one of a kind. She was hard-working, dedicated to whatever project she was involved in and, though born in Bell, California, she displayed a bit of the “Missouri” attitude. In other words, show me why we should do it differently—then I will consider it!

In 1971, she joined the Pomona Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines (now Sounds of Harmony) embracing the music and new friends whole-heartedly. She held almost every position in the chorus and served on the Golden West Regional Board more than once. She loved to quartet and won a Regional gold medal in 1982 as the bass of “Sounds Great”. She was a founding member and Financial Manager of Club 21 up until two days before she died. She is sorely missed and is our role model of how to continue to live through a deadly illness and bring courage and joy to those around her through it all.

Lynn Zacker was a member of the San Diego Chorus and the best advocate for Sweet Adelines that anyone could have asked for! Want to know some trivia? You could always ask Lynn. Lynn had a multitude of friends scattered around the world and, as often as possible, she gathered them together to sing in perfect harmony. Do you know that “Friendship is the only relationship bound only by love.” Lynn was loved and Lynn loved. Lynn made her mark in this world in her way, and our organization is better off because of the strengths, and laughter, and smiles, that she left behind. I’d be leaving out the most important part of all, if I didn’t say, we will miss the best statistical singer we will ever have. She will be greatly missed by the San Diego Chorus and Sweet Adelines In-ternational.

Lynn died on December 27th, 2006. “There will be mo-ments without answers and this is one of them.”

Where DOES the time go? That’s what we ask each other every year at this time. Our chorus has spent the time between contests doing what all our Sweet Adeline sisters do–practice; put on the annual show; prac-tice; sang for 16 holiday functions; practice; sang for 9 other func-tions throughout the year; practice; retreat; practice. Oh yes, and then a lot of us went to the annual SAI an-nual convention...and if you’re on the Board or music staff and a couple of committees along the way....and maybe you also sing in a quartet!!!

How DO we do it? I’m convinced Superman couldn’t handle what we do. That’s because we also juggle jobs, husbands, children, parents and all the attendant problems that go with each of these territories. We are truly Superwomen!! So, each and every one of you deserves a medal every year. It cannot be denied that we are all winners no matter what the ranking.

Enjoy the weekend and we’ll meet you in the auditorium after we sing. We’ll all be sitting in separate groups according to chorus costumes–yet we are the same. We are all WINNERS!

2007 for Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus (EMSC) is new, dif-ferent, and exciting. EMSC voted not to compete this spring so we can renew and rebuild, and focus on our long-term plan for growth and learning. However, many of us will be there – listen-ing, learning, and cheering on our sister choruses and quartets.

Speaking of quartets, we have two who competed in Las Vegas. We claim the rumble of bass singer Andi Rostel from SparX (14th place international quartet), and the lead and baritone, Michele Baldwin and Denise King in One Voice. Also competing this year is Southwest Edition – EMSC members Sue Bowdoin, Judy Moore, Marilyn Dickerson and CAL member Andrea Blumenthal.

Refreshing and rebuilding is quite a challenge...definitely NOT a time for resting. Our Master Director, Denise King, along with Music and Management Teams and the entire chorus have de-veloped a two-year plan that encompasses challenging learning opportunities, new repertoire and coaches.

January: Divas Wanted – four weeks of basic vocal production classes for guests and chorus mem-bers. “Graduation Night” welcomed 18 new prospec-tive members who performed music they learned in class. As of late Febru-

ary, four had passed their audition and three plan to attend re-gional convention.

February: all-day coaching with Kathy Carmody. We’ll contin-ue this superb education with Kathy in June, plus more vocal and choreography coaches.

January-March: new music, with a commitment to be “off pa-per” in three weeks. So far, we are meeting the challenge.

We wish all contestants this year the very, very best – we’ll be in the audience sending our love to all of you on stage! And just wait until next year when we introduce the NEW Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus!

–Mary Winters Morse

One of the bright lights of our chorus was extinguished. Our dear Dee DeFrank fought a valiant battle, but succumbed just a week before her birthday on August 19th. We feel her strong presence at every rehearsal and try to follow the high standards she set for herself and the chorus.

We enjoyed much success over the holiday season with our live singing telegrams for only $10.00 per call ANYWHERE in the World, which included such faraway places as South Africa, Ireland, Canada

and Kuwait!It was a joy

to sing at the Covina tree-lighting cer-emony, and the highlight of the season was partici-pating in the

Covina Christmas Parade and being the lead-in float for Santa Claus! We won a 2nd place trophy in the novelty float category (there were over 350 floats). Admittance to our Holiday Performance was by donation of an unwrapped gift for a child, which we delivered to the House of Ruth.

We are making inroads in membership growth, one of our major goals, by joining the Covina Chamber of Commerce. We are very ex-cited about the possibilities!

We’re nearly at the end of our “Extreme Makeover” program and contin-ue to proudly wear our pink t-shirts and pedometers. The chorus is divided into four groups, each group having a Head Coach and Assistant Coach–the competition has been tough, but it’ll be worth all the effort as we im-prove our stamina, strength and vocal ability on our “walk” to Phoenix!

“The Journey Continues.”–Marlene Yanow

Las Vegas…the lights! the shows! the rehearsals! the performances! What an honor it was to be representing Region 21 as outgoing International Champions at the 2006 Convention and Competition. From Tuesday night’s Showcase performance to our Saturday morning class with Lori,

the excitement was never-ending. Performing our outgoing package left us both grateful and humbled as we basked in the appreciation from an audience of 10,000+ sister Sweet Adelines, family, and friends. The week was truly an awesome experience.

Upon our return from Las Vegas, we launched into preparations for holiday shows, followed by Holidaygrams, then a well-earned three-week hiatus before beginning prep-aration for our February 25th annual show at the new Mesa Arts Center. Special guests on our show included top International quartet SparX and 2006 Region 21 medalist quartets Fast Track and One Voice.

A coaching session with the amazing and insightful Dale Syverson in February prepped us for Regional Competition as we worked diligently on “adding more tools to our tool-box” (ask us what “TNDC” means!).

We paused along the way to say a heartbreaking goodbye to our very own Judi Cho-quette who had accompanied us along our path to the International Championship. Judi’s energy, enthusiasm and always-ready smile was an inspiration to us all. We will miss her.

The friendships and learning never end as we continue on our journey, setting our personal bar higher with each milepost we pass. Best of luck to all of our regional competitors. And if you’re wondering if the reward is worth all of the preparation, trust us…it is!!!

Hello Region 21 Sisters in Harmony!Greetings from your proud current holders of the Third Place Small Cho-

rus ribbons! Unfortunately, we will not be able to defend our current title in Phoenix this time around, but, we will be cheering all of you on – some of us in person, and others in spirit!

Vista Hills Chorus has been busy getting out in public to introduce more people to our craft. At Christmastime, we were excited to perform our holi-

day standards throughout the community. In Febru-ary, we were proud to pro-vide the entertainment for a luncheon honoring retired service men and women at the Officer’s Club of Camp Pendleton. Our chapter quartet also entertained at a Valentine’s celebration din-ner for a very appreciative crowd.

We continue to work on sharpening our skills (and hopefully, not too many of

our notes!) and learning new songs in preparation for an upcoming show.Once again, we would like to wish everyone in Region 21 all the best, and

hope to join you next year in some friendly competition!–Rochelle Ribelin

Greetings Region 21! Well...here we go again! Razzcals would like to introduce our new bass Mary Segura!!! Yes...that’s right...we are on our 4th bass...(is it something I said?). But, this time it’s different. Mary can’t go anywhere be-cause she is the daughter of our lead Martha! We have gone through so many basses that we decided to grow our own. Mary Segura is 17 years old and she sang with the 2005 Ris-ing Star champions Underage. Now she sings with the “Overage” Razzcals! She is one heck of a bass, and we are having a blast!

Kim Chadwick (previous bass) had to retire from Razzcals due to family commitments etc.–we were very sad when she broke the news to us. We were not sure what to do next. Mary was a perfect fit into the foursome! She already knew most of our music, and she is a die-hard barbershopper–not to mention there is a great Lead/Bass match!

We are very excited to be representing Re-gion 21 in Calgary. Dana is really excited be-cause she will be competing with the AWE-SOME Harborlites too!! We have some shows coming up this spring in the northwest and, hopefully, we will see some of you at the West-minster show on May 27th! Mary was thrilled when we were asked to sing on that show. Hmmmmm...I wonder why???

Look forward to seeing you all soon and please check out our new website www.razzcals.com and sign our guest blog!

SparX would like to thank all of you for your support this past year. We have enjoyed representing Region 21 as your 2006 Regional

Champions. In October of 2006, SparX rolled the dice in Las Vegas

and came up with “14” the hard way =) and

are looking forward to returning to the Inter-national stage with the 2007 Region 21 repre-sentatives. We have been busy since you last heard from us. We are almost finished mak-ing a SparX CD! A little fun fact: between the four of us, collectively, we have been on 11 recordings, if you count records and cassettes. Whew, no 8 tracks! Anyway, we are very ex-cited about this and will have order forms at Regional and will be selling them at Interna-tional in Calgary.

We want to wish all the quartets and cho-ruses that are competing this year the best of luck, and, as always, are looking forward to having a high Regional representation in Cal-gary this year.

In Harmony,–Dawn Anne, Dayle Ann, Kathy, Andi

Do you know what activity, besides contest, earns your quartet accolades? Participation in the Tin Pan Alley program! You don’t know what that is? Well, let us tell you a story---

Music publishing offices of pre-World War I America were often located in close prox-imity to each other and the din of competing song demonstrations would spill out into the street inspiring the popular term Tin Pan Al-ley. Music publishers of the day would often work with a special group of people known as song pluggers. Finding an opportunity to get in front of an audience, these tireless performers would rush to the piano or onstage and per-form at the drop of a hat. The more famous stars of the day were often given free copies of publisher’s new numbers as the publishers recognized the opportunity of reaching larger audiences. (Paraphrased from Sheet Music Magazine 2002 and www.wikipedia.org).

Many parallels between that time and Re-gion 21’s very own Arranger’s Development Program (ADP) are evident right down to the role of the song plugger. As in days of old, your quartet can become a “Star of Tin Pan Alley” and have access to free arrangements, opportunities to perform and the accolades that will follow.

Now is the time to make plans for your

Hello Region 21 -Sedona Swing has been busy this past year

getting Prospective Red RockAppella cho-rus started. We are pleased that Lynnell, our baritone, is the Director of this new chorus!

After a successful educational program for Sedona Red Rock High School (SRRHS) by our quartet last spring, Anne, our bass, di-rected a weekly YWIH chorus at SRRHS this fall semester. The class highlight was a four song program presented during the holiday SRRHS Arts Night gala at the high school–first time ever for four-part a cappella har-mony at SRRHS!

Sedona Swing enjoyed being coached by Nancy Bergman during the Club 21 educa-tional weekend in November. What a won-derful educational opportunity that is!

Sedona Swing performs frequently in the Verde Valley for charitable events. Recently we have sung for a Verde Valley Womens’ Shelter, a Realtors benefit talent show, a church fellow-ship womens’ auxillary, the Adult Community Center, University Women, the Sedona Inter-national Film festival, and the Tlaquepaque Christmas Candle-lighting ceremony.

We look forward to seeing many of our Sweet Adelines friends at Region 21 compe-tition weekend. We will be bringing many of our new Prospective Red RockAppella cho-rus members to view what’s happening in Re-gion 21. See you in March!

Can Time Fly Any Faster?Where did the year go? Of course when you are on the

Fast Track, it’s hard to keep up with the weeks and months as they fly by. What a great year it has been for us! We must thank you all for your support on our journey to Las Vegas – our first International Competition. We had a great time and hope to have the chance to do that again sometime! Now we are ready for another great Regional Contest. As we celebrate another competition weekend together, Fast Track wishes all competing quartets and choruses the VERY BEST!

For those of you who have never competed in a quartet, we encourage you to give it a go. There is nothing more rewarding than combining your voice and skill with three other singers to create beautiful music. The synergy created by a quartet is thrilling, and the personal growth gained from this fun challenge is a benefit that you owe yourself. Get up the courage to put together a quartet for the Novice Quartet Contest, or the Double Quartet Contest. There are lots of experienced quartet singers out there to help you, maybe even sing with you. We challenge current quartet

members to help new singers realize that the reward is not in the scoring, but in the experience itself.Enjoy the music and let it brighten your life. Sing-cerely, Fast Track.–Connie, Barb, Della, Carolyn

Meet Portfolio…one of the newest quartets in Region 21. We got the “bug” to quartet at precisely the same time – communicating only by e-mail until a fateful first “rehearsal” in Las Vegas. The rest, as they say, is history!

Tenor– Kat Shaver – a dual member of Harborlites and Golden Sands Choruses. Kat is an art director and production manager at Reyn-olds & Associates in Torrance. Kat joined Sweet Adelines in 2003 and has sung in a couple of fun show quartets, and is thrilled to be singing in her first competing quartet.

Lead– Nanci Evarts – a Chapter at Large Region 11 member and avid quartet singer. You may recognize her as she has sung with a number of regional medalist quartets in Region 6 and Region 11. She’s looking for-

ward to her “debut” in Region 21. Nanci has her own marketing firm, Marketing Strategies Group.Bari– Barb Mattis – recently relocated from Michigan, Barb’s been a member of West Shore, Mason and Grand Rapids chapters. Her quartet

experience includes competing and placing Top 10 in tough Region 3. Look for her in the front row of Harborlites. Barb is the Customer Service Training Supervisor at Newport Meat Company in Irvine.

Bass– Linda Carlberg – a member of Harborlites, making her quartet debut. Although Portfolio is Linda’s first quartet, she is not new to the world of singing, having sung professionally with Celebrant Singers, a traveling women’s trio and a folk-rock “coffeehouse band,” among others. She owns Ideapolis, a full-service advertising agency.

This is radio station KADP.The following is a quote from a satisfied

member who attended a one-day workshop by the Region 21 Arrangers Development Pro-gram (ADP): “It gave me a real understanding of how our harmonies are put together.”

This member, who requested her name be withheld, felt that she had many unanswered questions before the workshop, such as “Why do Baritones have the left over notes?” “What is a chord, and how do they differ from one an-other?” “How is barbershop a cappella singing different from SATB choral arrangements?”

In only one day she received answers to these and many more questions. Ending the interview her final words were : “It started out a little intimidating, but as usual, our Sweet Adeline instructors are over the top fantastic. I’d do it again. It was fantastic!”

According to an ADP spokeswoman, the ADP Annual Retreat is open to Sweet Adeline members interested in learning more about the craft of barbershop harmony. To be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 18-20, 2007, Re-treat subjects will include a beginners’ class as well as advanced instruction in a musical laboratory-style setting. Faculty will be Nancy Bergman, MA, Suzy Lobaugh, CMA, and Jean Kane ADP Coordinator.

The schedule for future workshops in Scott-sdale, AZ and Vista, CA is currently under de-velopment, so stay tuned for announcement via the RING and communications to your chapter. For further information contact this station or Jean Kane, ADP Coordinator, e-mail [email protected].

Young Singers Foundation (YSF) Director Certification Program (DCP)

A lot of exciting things have been happening with the YWIH program in Region 21! And there’s just not enough space to do them justice. Here are a few highlights:

Song of the Pines chorus performed on the Prescott Middle/High School’s Holiday concert. Not only were they asked to perform again in their Spring concert but also to begin working with the music department to bring barbershop harmony into the school program.

Sedona Red Rock Chorus (nine students from Sedona Red Rock High School), under the direction of Anne Uruburu (Prospective Red Rockapella chorus), performed four songs at the Sedona Red Rock High School Winter Arts Festival. The packed audience was enthusiastic in their applause. Anne had been helping with the choral classroom program every week.

A Cappella Angels, under the direction of Cathie Sturm, joined the Voice of the Desert cho-rus for their Christmas performance in Glendale, AZ. They will also perform on the Voice of the Desert Annual Show in April. A Cappella Angels rehearse twice a month.

Almost Adelines under the direction of Lauren Altiere, Scottsdale chorus, recently traveled to Anaheim to participate in Harborlites 2nd Annual Diva Day.

Tucson Desert Harmony is assisting local Girl Scouts to start their music program, “Girl Scouts in Harmony,” under the direction of a former chorus member, Bobbie Baughman. Every-one involved hopes to get this program off the ground in April 2007.

Connie Gajewsky (also a former chorus member) has been working with visually impaired high school students. They named themselves A Cappella Vision. They are working on “Over the Rainbow”, with the help of the learning tapes.

Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus performed at the New Mexico Music Educators Association Conference in January. Students, parents, and educators just loved it!

At the Arizona Music Educators Association Conference, Jana Gutenson of Scottsdale, along with Dr. Dean Anderson and his Chandler High School choir, Treblemakers, presented a session entitled, “The Benefits of Barbershop Harmony in Choral Classrooms”.

Harborlites-sponsored “Diva Day” was a HUGE success! A total of 249 young singers from 17 high schools in the area (and from out-of-state, see above) had an unforgettable experience. The girls learned about barbershop harmony from members of Harborlites and the fabulous guest clinician, Debbie Connelly (lead of “the BUZZ” and a high school choral director in Florida). The event ended with the “Divas” performing on an evening show for the community. Second-place medalists, the Westminster Chorus (from the Barbershop Harmony Society) were guests on the show and were quite popular with the girls! The show closed with the “Divas” and 100 plus members of Harborlites singing together.

–Annie Hayes, Region 21 YWIH Coordinator
