Welcome back to the school year to our staff, parents and our students. I trust that you all had a very enjoyable and relaxing holi- day. The first few days of the school year have been very busy, but the children are settling well and enjoying being back at school. I would like to recognise the hard work that has been put in by many over the holidays to ensure that our start was smooth. It really is a team effort that shows the pride we all have in our school. Bruce has been a champion at getting all our classrooms sparkling and our teachers have all put in many hours getting their classroom set up. New Staff -We are delighted to welcome the following new staff: Teachers: Education Support: Laura Ferguson 2LF Rebecca Joyce Glenn McMillan 4GM Nick Sullivan Naomi Wright 1NW Mitchell Hutchings Shellee Kenna Students – We have welcomed 70 new Preps this year and there are 9 other new students in the school. Getting Help When Starting School As children transition to school, a change in behaviour is quite common. Children are adjusting to a new setting and forming new relationships with staff and other children. Why seeking help early is important All children adjust to new settings differently and some children may need extra support and assistance in settling into school. You may have some concerns about how your child is coping when starting school and despite the planning and preparation you’ve done in helping to get your child ready for school, they may be having difficulties adjusting to their new school setting. If you’re worried about how your child is settling into school these are some steps you can take that will help: Talk to your child’s teacher You know your child best and if you are, at any time, concerned about your child, a good place to start is sharing your concerns with your child’s teacher. We have a lot of knowledge about child development and learning, and have observed your child during the day with children of the same age. You can share any strate- gies that you have found useful in responding to your child’s needs and your child’s teacher will have suggestions about what strate- gies they have found helpful to support your child. Other things to do to help your child adjust Make sure they start the day with a healthy breakfast Set up a morning routine that will help all to be calm and relaxed- try giving your child some simple tasks like collect- ing their hat, reader, lunch and water bottle in their bag. Don’t worry if they are slow or make mistakes with these tasks at first. They will get the hang of it. Make time to chat to your child about their day at school. Remember that their emotional reaction to going to school will vary a lot during the first few weeks. Develop a bedtime routine so your child can wind down at the end of the day. A five year old needs 10 – 11 hours of sleep per night. Be kind to yourself and don’t put too many expectations on yourself or your child. The aim is for them to be happy and enjoying school in these early days. Grade 6 Leadership Day 2015 Next Wednesday 10 th February, we will be taking the Grade 6 students to Deakin Reserve for a day of leadership training. This is a precursor to students nominating for School Captain and House Captain leadership positions. We really value the contribu- tion that all of our Grade 6 students can make to promoting the positive culture within our school. The program will be based around activities to help the students develop skills in leadership and to understand its importance within our school environment. I believe that last year’s program was well received and we look forward to offering this opportunity to our Grade 6 students again this year. CommitteeCommitteeCommitteeCommittee

The Guthrie St. Primary School Fundraising Committee would like to

welcome everyone to the 2016 school year.

As a committee we are all keen, eager and committed to continue to

build upon our already great school not only for the students here to-

day but for those to come in the years ahead.

This year we have set ourselves a big target. We want to raise $35,000.

Yes it’s a big figure, but one that we believe is achievable with

your support!

We have chosen to raise funds for Air Conditioning in the Stadium and

the rooms within this facility.

It gets very hot in the stadium, and we believe the comfort of our stu-

dents and staff is paramount and that learning is enhanced & more en-

joyable when you are in a controlled climate. Hence the decision for the

Stadium air conditioning.

We are very excited with the fundraising events we have organised for

the year. We have three major fundraisers; A shuffle Party term 2, a Din-

ner term 4 and a sponsorship board where we will be out in the wider

community trying to source sponsorships for our stadium AC.

We will also be holding First Aid information sessions. All dates and fur-

ther details on our events will be in upcoming newsletters.

We are commencing our first fundraiser in a couple of weeks;

Cool The Stadium Coin Collection February 15th – 26th

Please see information sheet attached for further details.

You will be able to keep up to date with our fundraising progress

throughout the year through newsletter updates and we will also have

our fundraising total continually updated in the stadium

throughout the year.

We look forward to working with the Guthrie St Primary School com-

munity throughout the year so together we can achieve our target.

Grades Three and Four Grades Three and Four Grades Three and Four Grades Three and Four Welcome Back It was great to see our students arrive rested and ready to go for the start of our 2016 school year. Listed below are a few class routines we would like to remind you of. Drink Bottles On Tables. Students are encouraged to bring a drink bottle of water to have on their classroom table. This allows them to re-main hydrated during their work sessions. Fruit Break. We encourage our students to bring some fruit to eat during the fruit break organised for each classroom. School Hats. All students are required to wear a school hat for outside activities. Naming Clothing and Stationary. It is important that jackets, wind-cheaters and stationary items your child uses are clearly named. This helps avoid confusion when any of these things are misplaced. 3/4 Sport. Our classes will combine for a sports session on Tuesdays from 10:00 am until 10:45 am. Please ensure that your child is wearing suitable shoes for sport activities. Art Smocks and Library Bags. All students need an art smock to pro-tect their school uniforms during art / craft activities. Library books form a part of the valuable resources at our school. In order to help protect them and extend their ‘borrowing life’ we ask that students bring a bag to carry these books to and from the library in.. ICT and Excursion forms need to be returned before Friday Feb-ruary 5th.

All classes have begun to settle into their routines. This has been sup-ported by our fantastic students arriving on time and eager to be involved.

Grades Five and SixGrades Five and SixGrades Five and SixGrades Five and Six Welcome back to all 5/6 students, hope

you all had a safe and enjoyable break.

Students are required to bring back three

notes that relate to, the school's ICT poli-cy, PG movie permission/photo permission

and local excursion form. All forms need to be back as soon as possible.

Students are required to bring a drink bot-

tle into class as this is required during the

warmer weather.

Leaders Day is on the 10th of February. All Grade 6 students will require a hat and

their lunch. Grade 5 students will remain

at school.
