Do you want GPS canteen prices to stay low? Or are you okay with big price increases?

School Uniform All students are expected to wear a school hat to school, on the playground, during sport, PSSA or fitness time and to excursions. Hats are available from the school canteen for $12. Also, as the days become cooler, students need to wear a school jumper or jacket. No multi-coloured clothes or branded pants and jumpers.

National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Students will engage in classroom discus-sions and activities, illustrating their understanding of the history and culture of Aboriginal Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey; the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

Sorry Day – 26 May Picture book, Sorry Day by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler illustrates a timeline since colonisation. Maggie is safe with her mother watching the Prime Minister apologise for the actions of a country and government. This book is gentle and ends with hope. Teachers will share this book with their class during National Reconciliation Week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oPGJx5njjU

Extra-Curricular Activities Children who are selected for extra-curricular activities must turn up to all practices and performances, e.g. PSSA teams, Dance group, Choir. It is essential that every student selected is present so as to improve their skills and knowledge.

Grounds improvements Planned improvements for 2019 include: Courtyard upgrade with new surface and seating Carpark perimeter safety fence and new parking for 7 cars Hall and Kindergarten block toilets upgrade (underway) Centre of school or the flags area upgrade with sandpits, shelter and new surfaces (plan is being developed)

Car Park Safety It is critical that children and parents use the footpath along-side the car park to enter and exit school to Apia Street. No children or parents are to enter the car park unless permission is granted. Parents and carers are encouraged to be strict about this rule as the safety of children must be our number 1 priority.

Parent Excursion Community Liaison Officers (CLO) Zainab Ashrafi and Jamile Daher are organising an excursion for parents and carers to Kinokuniya Bookshop on Thursday 23 May. Kinokuniya Bookeshop has one of the largest collections of children’s and youth books as well as a large section of translated books and books with English and another language.

Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association update The P&C is currently in care-taker mode as the acting president, Fatima Saadeddine, has moved suburb and school. I thank Mrs Saadeddine for acting in the role and for her considerable impact on the P&C and students of Guildford. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 8th August where voting will take place for all positions. The P&C is an extremely positive way for parents to connect, build a stronger understanding of Australian school culture, and contribute to school activities and fundraising.

A Visit from the Director of Education Mr John Kennedy, Thursday 16th May

I, Mr Haberecht believe it is important that John gain an understanding of “What’s happening for students, staff and the community” by having a yarn with a cross-section of Guildford community members.

The conversations are designed to be informal and reflective. By providing John some context and a mixture of your observations and experiences, I anticipate John will be able to engage with me at a deeper level during my PDP discussion.

Kindy Regards Mr Chris Haberecht

2019

On Tuesday 2nd of April, our school had Cross Country. The 8’s, 9’s,10’s had to do 3 laps around Guildford Leagues and 11’s and 12’s had to do 5 laps, it was hard but it was good to see everyone trying their best. Most students participated in the races and every team - Wattle, Waratah, Blue Gum and Banksia all supported their team colours by cheering and encouraging them. There were points for participation, cheering, cleaning and a few more. It was a fun day and it was good to see everyone competing and having fun with their friends, it was also good to see students were encouraging their friends to never give up and shouting that they can do it and it is definitely true.

THE CROSS COUNTRY

Everyone was buzzing with excitement while we walked to Guildford Leagues Club. You could see all the smiles on every-one’s faces, you could tell they were ready to cheer for their teams. Once everyone arrived we started the races, but we ate some fruit first (we have to be healthy)! The races begun and all the teams (Banksia, Waratah, Wattle and Bluegum) began to cheer. All the vice captains and captains of each team were battling it out to see who could cheer the loudest! All students were all excited to travel the world (well an oval actually)! 8,9 and 10 year olds did 3 laps, while 11 or 12 year olds did 5 laps. The top 10 fastest people had their names written down. The top 6 fastest people will go to Zone Cross Country and represent our school while the other 4 will be reserves. The day was coming to a end but we had to do 1 more cheer. Banksia, Waratah, Wattle and Bluegum wanted to be the best but we can’t win them all or can we….. The last cheer was done and we started to walk back to school. It started to rain, but we got to school in no time. Everyone was tired, our legs hurt (well most of us) and we were wet but we did finish off the day with smiles and relieved faces.
