Guide to using the library search for finding the journal articles for the

Summative Assignment

Below listed are the 3 articles selected for meeting the objectives of our summative assignment.

I understand the links provided do not work for everyone all of the time, so I will demonstrate how

to find them using the library search.

1. Lakeman, R. (2012) What is Good Mental Health Nursing? A Survey of Irish Nurses, Archives of

Psychiatric Nursing, 26 (3), pp. 225-231. http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com/sp-3.13.0b/ovidweb.cgi

2. Gunasekara, I., Pentland, T., Rodgers, T. and Patterson, S. (2014) What makes an excellent mental

health nurse? A pragmatic inquiry initiated and conducted by people with lived experience of service

use, International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, 23 (2), pp. 101-109. http://0-

onlinelibrary.wiley.com.lispac.lsbu.ac.uk/doi/10.1111/inm.12027/pdf

3. Leese, D. (2014) Recovery-focused practice in mental health, Nursing Times, 110 (12), pp. 20-

22. http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com/sp-3.13.0b/ovidweb.cgi

The instructions are found within the module outline along with the date for submission, don't

forget to choose 2 (two) of the 3 (three) articles.

Example 1.

Lakeman, R. (2012) What is Good Mental Health Nursing? A Survey of Irish

Nurses, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, 26 (3), pp. 225-231.

Head to the LSBU library homepage - https://my.lsbu.ac.uk/general/library.aspx

Page 2: Guide to Using the Library Search for Journal Articles.compressed

Click on the tab that says Journals and type in the journal required, which in this case is Archives of

Psychiatric Nursing, and hit Search.

This will bring you to a screen that looks like this listing the results we want. It offers two links to find

the full text.

In this example we will try the top one that links to Science Direct.

It will take you through to the Science Direct page for this journal, where we can then type in the

required information to find the specific article.

Here in the boxes along the top I have entered the Author’s last name Lakeman, the Volume 26 and

the Issue 3, all which are written in the reference we were given by Linda.

Lakeman, R. (2012) What is Good Mental Health Nursing? A Survey of Irish Nurses, Archives of

Psychiatric Nursing, 26 (3), pp. 225-231.

Hit the search button, and you should hopefully see the following page returned. Check the

information against the reference we have, including the article title and year and you will be able to

open the PDF to download and print.

Example 2.

Gunasekara, I., Pentland, T., Rodgers, T. and Patterson, S. (2014) What makes an

excellent mental health nurse? A pragmatic inquiry initiated and conducted by people

with lived experience of service use, International Journal of Mental Health

Nursing, 23 (2), pp. 101-109.

Repeat the search process from above, searching this time for the International Journal of Mental

Health.

In this example 4 links were returned to this journal. I tried the last one from Psychology and

Behavioural Sciences Collection.

It will take you to Ebesco Host which is another site like Science Direct that contains journal articles.

If you click the link to Search within this publication, we can search the journal for the article.

The top box will already be filled in with information about the journal you want to search in, so in

the second box we can type further criteria. In this example I use part of the article’s title – What

makes an excellent mental health nurse? And hit search.

Above is shown the results. You will have to click the Link to Full Text.

It will then take you to a rather blank looking screen.

Here it can be a bit confusing as we are expecting it to have linked us to the full text, but it’s just a

couple more steps.

If you click on the link to Issue, it takes you to the Wiley Online Library.

And here we can see we are taken to Volume 22, Issue 2 of the International Journal Mental Health

Nursing, which is the one we want if you check the reference, and rather than searching further, the

article we want is listed at the top of Feature Articles. You can access it as a PDF or HTML.

Example 3.

Leese, D. (2014) Recovery-focused practice in mental health, Nursing Times, 110 (12),

pp. 20-22.

This last one for the Nursing Times is fairly easy, but I will show it as well.

Search Nursing Times in the library catalogue under Journals and it returns this page. I clicked on the

second result for the electronic resource.

This time there is only one link onwards. Sometimes when you leave the catalogue it will ask you to

sign in again, in which case you just use your LSBU login.

In the keywords bar, we can just type the name of the article – Recovery-focused practice in mental

health and hit search.

It is returned at the top of the search results here but just check that the author for example is

correct and then you can access the PDF.

I hope you found this guide useful to using the library search and navigating the e-journal hosting

websites. It gets easier with practice, and soon you will be able to do independent searches for your

further reading I hope.
