www.cdet.org.uk
Welcome to CDET’s 2013 Guide to professional
education and training in dance and musical
theatre, sponsored by Spotlight.
CDET members include some of the most
prestigious institutions in the UK. Our Board
draws on the industry expertise of such
organisations as Equity, The Society of London
Theatre, The Theatre Management Association,
international dance companies as well as that
of independent professionals such as casting
director David Grindrod.
CDET has proudly served the sector since 1979,
working closely with member schools and
awarding organisations to ensure standards
remain at a level that secures the supply of
quality practitioners for the future.
CDET also lobbies authorities about issues
of funding and policy on behalf of our
membership. Supporting the performers,
students and teachers of tomorrow,
we ensure that professional training
remains at the forefront of arts
provision nationwide.
We look forward to working with you
to make 2013/14 another memorable year
for dance and musical theatre in the UK.
Onwards and upwards!

Finding the funds to study on dance and musical
theatre courses can be difficult. A course at a
CDET accredited professional training school
can cost anything between £7,000 and £13,000
per year depending on where you study.
Different sources of funding are available.
Dance and Drama Awards (DaDAs)
Government-funded Dance and Drama Awards
(DaDAs) will continue to be available in
2013/14, for new students starting courses
as well as continuing learners. Awards for new
students will however now be income assessed
for both school fees and maintenance on the
basis of a national scale – with students from
lower income families contributing less and
those from higher income families contributing
more. Arrangements for existing students
who will be entering their second or third year
of study in 2013 will remain unchanged,
until these students have finished their
courses. For more information including the
national scale please click on the funding tab
on the CDET website.

Higher Education (HE)
UK and EU students entering Higher Education
are eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan of
up to £9,000 or £6,000 at a private university
or college in 2013/14. Students following
HE dance or musical theatre courses do
not qualify for DaDAs.
Further Education
Some courses may not be funded by any awards.
In these cases, students are responsible for the
full cost of fees and may need to secure private
funding via loans, scholarships and trusts.
Students may also wish to consider a
Professional and Career Development loan.
Repayment starts upon graduation.
The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) pays the interest
on the loan whilst the student is studying and
for one month after graduation.

Aspire is an annual joint initiative funded by CDET
working with londondance.com at Sadler’s Wells.
The three tiered dance mentoring scheme partners up a
young person showing particular promise and ambition,
with a professional dance student who is in turn
matched with a professional mentor. The objectives are:
Initiatives

enabling them to explore the pros and cons of
choosing a vocation in dance, via access to a
student mentor currently in full-time training
To provide a stepping stone between life
within a professional school and the industry
Students attending one of the Council’s accredited
professional schools will receive full information on
