Hello and a warm welcome to the 2020 issue of the Guidance Magazine. It's been a few years since we last produced the magazine and after a few people asking about it, we have decided to resume the yearly edit.

The magazine aims to provide teachers, careers and guidance staff with an insight into Glasgow Caledonian University's developments of courses, facilities and services, so that you are fully equipped to advise and support future higher education entrants to make the right choices.

Over the past few years the UK team has expanded, and you can meet the team on page 13. The team have been busy at various recruitment events around the UK. We have also successfully hosted various events on campus, including over 100 campus tours. The next year will be challenging for the team as we may not be able to visit as many careers fairs and events as we would like, but we do hope that the current pandemic will pass quickly to allow us to continue to interact and liaise with yourselves and prospective students.

We are keen to keep you informed of GCU activities and events that may be done virtually. All the information is on page 12.

I hope that you enjoy reading the magazine, and as always we look forward to hearing your comments or suggestions on how we can progress the services we offer to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Why Choose Social Work? The study of social work at GCU reflects the key principles of the Global Definition of ?Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing?. (International Federation of Social Workers, 2014)

At GCU our degree programme aims to blend academic theories, knowledge and practice experience. We believe that our graduates are equipped to enter their professional practice with the knowledge, skills and competences and principles to be critical practitioners.

Why Choose GCUAccording to a number of league tables we are currently- 1st in Subject in Scotland- 2nd in Subject in the UK (Guardian League Table)- Student satisfaction of 91% (National Student Survey)- Top 10 position for research impact for Social Work and Social Policy- 80% of research recognised as world leading and internationally excellent- 96% Employability post-graduation

In addition to these figures we also use some of the most modern simulation techniques to enhance our student learning. We can offer home placements for students from Northern Ireland and students also have the opportunity to engage with students from other European countries in an annual Global Teaching Week.

Study Biosciences at GCUBSc (Hons) Biological Sciences

2020 will be remembered as the year in which the world waged a war against a tiny yet deadly enemy: SARS-CoV-2, better known as the coronavirus. Bio-scientists were at the forefront of this fight, including the biomedical scientists who analysed patient samples, helping to diagnose the condition and map its spread, and the biological scientists who cracked the virus?s genetic code and worked to develop a vaccine.

In Scotland and beyond, many of these bio-scientists were GCU graduates, but even in more ordinary times our bio-science graduates routinely carry out work that is essential, challenging, varied and fulfilling, and which can sometimes be a matter of life or death.

To meet the demands of a rapidly changing world, the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences has recently revamped the programmes it offers.

Our main innovation is the creation of a new programme, BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences, which recognises that the interests of students may change and develop throughout their university career, and so provides them with the flexibility to study the subjects for which they have an affinity.

In Years 1 and 2 all students cover the core material that forms the foundation of their subsequent studies, while in later years they can choose from a wide range of modules, constructing a bespoke programme of study that reflects their own particular interests. Alternatively, students can choose designated routes through the programme, graduating with a named specialism that reflects the particular focus of their studies: BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences (Cell Biology) or BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences (Microbiology).

Students on the Biological Sciences programme will graduate not only with a deep understanding of their chosen areas of study, but a proficiency in essential practical skills. This is achieved by our emphasis on laboratory experience at all levels of the programme. In the early years, our students master fundamental techniques, honing their lab skills, while in their final year all students undertake an Honours project, a substantial piece of independent research. This combination of up-to-date knowledge and cutting edge technical know-how makes our graduates particularly attractive to potential employers.

Page 7: Guidance 2020 - gcu.ac.uk · - IB Diploma: 26 points - SWAP: Access to Humanities/ Social Work/ Social Sciences with ABB - Foundation Apprenticeship: Accepted as equivalent to one

Although BSc Biological Sciences is a new programme, all programmes offered by the department have undergone change as part of our recent overhaul. Our BSc (Hons) Food Science is the only course of its kind in Scotland. Approved by relevant professional bodies such as the Institute of Food Science and Technology, the course provides graduates with the knowledge and practical skills that make them perfectly suited to a range of careers in the scientific branches of the food and drink industry.

In addition to the traditional aspects of food science such as biochemistry, microbiology and nutrition, our Food Science students also learn about novel foodstuffs, food security and sustainability. As part of the revamp, and guided by input from food industry experts, the programme now includes two streams: a ?food safety? stream and a ?food & business? route. The latter introduces core and elective business modules to develop business acumen alongside scientific skills. In both streams, students gain a substantial amount of practical experience that includes a trimester-long industrial placement in Year 4.

Frequently, Food Science students so impress their placement supervisors that, on graduation (and sometimes in advance of graduation), they are ?head-hunted? by the company they spent their placement with. This demonstrates the quality and employability of our students but also reflects the demand for skilled graduates in this area.

Our long-standing and highly regarded BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme is the only programme of its kind in Glasgow that is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science. Revisions to this programme have been relatively minor. Modules have been combined and repackaged, but the essential learning experience is unchanged.

In Level 3 some of these students are selected to transfer to our BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science programme. The chosen students spend half of the academic year on placement, working in a hospital lab and experiencing the reality of life as a scientist responsible for carrying out clinical tests, the outcome of which will determine the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Indeed, this is the likely career destination of the majority of Biomedical Science graduates.

6

The final programme in our portfolio, BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, has undergone changes in module content and now includes a focus on ?bench-to-bedside? research. For this, pharmacology staff provide examples of how pre-clinical research leads to clinical trials in their own research area. As is the case for all our programmes, there is an emphasis on laboratory experience, culminating in the Honours project that provides the ideal springboard for a subsequent career in industry, healthcare, academia or research.

Private and public organisations are tasked with navigating an increasingly complex environment. As unpredictability continues to cloud the business horizon, the challenges posed by risk have never been more apparent. Health epidemics are at this moment, sending shockwaves through the very foundations of our business and society.

Cyber threats are silently infiltrating our information technology systems. Climate change is transforming what consumers and regulators demand of companies. Internationally, geopolitical tensions, populist forces, terrorism and escalating trade wars have distorted the once calm waters within which multinationals once conducted their operations. Corporate reputations have never been so precious or precarious, and a single judgemental error on social media can significantly increase the probability of a corporate crisis. The path to risk resilience is as exciting as it is complex and requires a new generation of skilled risk managers to lead the way.

Our programme provides a breadth of contemporary knowledge of risk in business and society. This includes crisis management, cyber risk, contemporary insurance practices, business continuity management, strategic and project risk management, health and safety and managing risk in a global context. The goal of achieving organisational resilience underpins all of these respective disciplines. Students will explore state-of-the-art risk management processes including the identification of organisational risk, analysis and modelling of the likely effect of those risks, design and selection of control measures and the monitoring and evaluation of these measures. As a result of this holistic approach to risk management, students will develop the skills which allow them to enter any industry sector on graduation.

Our programme is recognised by industry and professional bodies alike. In 3rd year, students will be able to take advantage of a unique opportunity to work in the industry and develop real-life risk management skills to complement

their academic work. Once they complete their degree, they will receive exemptions from both the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Institute of Risk Management who accredit the degree. This is the only programme of its kind in the UK and leading companies approach the University directly when seeking to employ risk graduates.

Opportunities will be wide. GCU?s Risk Management Graduates have gone on to work with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, GlaxoSmithKline, Morgan Stanley, Scottish Power, Aviva, Lloyds of London, Transport for London (TfL), Balfour Beatty, Camelot, Network Rail, Tesco Financial Services, Local Authorities and government organisations and the NHS.

Study Cyber at GCUBSc (Hons) Digital Security and ForensicsBSc (Hons) Cyber Security and Networks

The Department of Cyber Security and Networks at GCU are running a suite of programmes focused on cyber security skills with the objective of addressing the existing skills gap in the area. The programmes, Cyber Security and Networks and Digital Security and Forensics, provide an excellent opportunity for students to be at the forefront of defending cyberspace from sophisticated malicious attacks and future threats.

These programmes will prepare you for entering different roles within the cyber security industry. As a cyber security expert you will be able to defend computers networks and data from malicious attacks. Given that cyber security is becoming increasingly complex and vast, we expect our graduates to embark on a range of career pathways including government agencies, law enforcement or associated private sector agencies, in specialist roles that can vary from penetration testers to digital forensic analysts, from Security Operation Centre (SOC) analysts to threat hunters and many more.

The programmes cover a wide range of topics including computer networking, python programming ethical hacking, digital forensics, malware analysis, machine learning for cyber security and much more. It will inform you of the latest technologies, help you understand legal, ethical and professional responsibilities and provide a broad awareness of the industry.

To achieve these skills, students at GCU will benefit from the use of state of the art laboratories, to help them prepare for many roles in cyber security. We have recently opened a Security Operation Centre (SOC) lab in collaboration with industry partners, Proact UK, to ensure that our students will be able to learn the technical concept using NextGen SIEMs such as LogRhythm. We also have full industrial standard CISCO labs where networks can be analysed and investigated for vulnerabilities. These allow the students to plan, design, implement, secure and troubleshoot complex enterprise class networks. These labs are the largest in Scotland supported by over 200 devices.

We use virtual machines to simulate a wide range of different operating systems and environments to provide a safe resource for cyber security learning.

Students use industry standard tools such as Metasploit, Nessus to assess system security or XRY and Cellebrite for mobile forensics activities. Recent investments in our virtualized distance learning platform enables students to continue their learning off campus. This includes our innovative NETLAB+ online laboratory system supporting both networking and digital security modules.

Placement OpportunitiesThe programmes feature an optional one-year sandwich placement which can be undertaken after completion of Year 3. The placement consists of a year of practical paid work experience in a suitable company position. The different types of posts undertaken can be of quite a diverse range but will always relate to your area of study. Recently students have been placed with companies such as IBM, Dell Corporation, Baillie Gifford, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Police Scotland among others. The placement can provide valuable experience to enhance your career prospects following graduation.

The programme places a significant emphasis on developing advanced practical technical skills and then benchmarking these against industry standard professional qualifications, allowing us to assess students by a number of different methods, depending on the nature of the module studied. The programme of study develops the soft skills valued by employers, such as writing, research and team working skills. In keeping with the relevant nature of this course, students are expected to solve realistic problems drawn from industry.Students who follow this programme of study can expect to be taught in a suite of network and security engineering labs which are among the best in Scotland, and possibly the UK, providing an unmatched hands-on learning experience essential for a successful future career in cyber security.

With today's advancing technologies comes the increasing threat of cybercrime. The National Cyber Security Strategy makes clear the importance of good network defences in securing the UK and the requirement to address the shortage of skills to meet the UK cyber security needs across both the public and private sector.

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Pathways programme in partnership with the Glasgow colleges for students domiciled in Scotland. Pathways is a route into a number of GCU?s degree programmes, currently available through UCAS for entry in September 2020. This option may be of interest to students who have been late in applying, unsuccessful so far, or simply unsure and now wish to apply. The first two years of Pathways will be delivered in college, providing a transitional step between current study and University. On successful completion of the HND at the end of second year, students will progress to GCU to continue their studies without needing to re-apply, unlike normal articulation routes. At the end of their studies, students will graduate with a full degree from GCU ? this is simply another route.

As part of the Pathways programme, students are able to access GCU just like other first or second year students. Moreover, by the end of their time at our partner colleges they will have already gained an HNC or HND, as well as guaranteed progression to the third year of a GCU programme, depending on the successful completion of their studies at college.

- Glasgow School for Business and Society: GCU Pathways into Accounting, International Tourism and Events Management and International Business and Human Resource Management

- School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment: GCU Pathways into Cyber Security and Networks, Electrical Engineering Programmes, Mechanical Engineering Programmes, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Building Surveying.

- School of Health and Life Sciences: GCU Pathways into Pharmacology and Food Bioscience.

FAQs- How to apply and will it cost more?

How your students apply depends on what they have submitted so far: - If they have applied through UCAS, but not yet used all

5 choices, they can add one of the programmes above as a late choice.

- If they have only previously submitted one choice, they will need to pay the additional fee.

- If they have used all 5 choices and either been unsuccessful in their applications or aren?t holding any offers, they can apply to one of the programmes listed above through UCAS Extra. This is a free service available between 25 February and 4 July. If Extra is available to them, it will show up as a button when they sign in to track their application. Further info ucas.com/ sites/default/ files/ extra-applicant-faqs.pdf

- When will applicants find out if they have been successful? Once students submit their application to UCAS, they will receive an email confirming that their application has been sent to us. This email will also contain their Personal ID, which will enable them to log in to UCAS Track to check the progress of their application. If successful they will begin their course in August.

- Would I be a college or GCU student? They will spend their first two years studying at a local college, however they are very much part of the valued GCU community. They will be invited along to our induction activities, Freshers? week, and access GCU support facilities including the Sir Alex Ferguson Library.

- What if they want to know more? We have a dedicated team on hand to speak to you and your students to assist you through this process.
