“The people’s Almanac” When we speculate about whether other worlds will have “life-as-we-know-it”, our natural tendency is to think only of life form that supiciously resemble man, dogs, cats and, at very most, perhaps, something as fantastic as a giraffe. The fact is, however, that little is know about “life-as-we-know-it”, between 50 million and 4 billion different species of living things have lived on this planet and only a minimum plants and animal have been subjected to scientific classifications an chemical analysis. We are shamefully ignorant, and therefore have a biological myopia that drastically shortens our view of the dimensions of life. In order to theorize rationally about life on earth, we should take a closer look at it. Only when we begin to perceive the diversity of life on earth can we fully appreciate the possibilities of vastness of life beyond earth.

On the day that I left Saturn, one of my fellow prisoners told me that since she hadknown me; her opinion of “Greens” had fallen even lower than it had been before. This hit me especially hard because she was a woman whom I deeply respected andalso because I had secretly imagined myself to be living life as a “Green” witnessamong the rebels. She said that when I decided not to speak about my prison experiences because of the risks involved, she was hardly able to speak to me. She condemned me for professing to be a “Green” without having the courage to act like one.

It was then that I conceived that I owed it to the members of the camp to speak forthem and against Saturnian’s dictatorship. It became clear to me that, whatever thediplomatic or personal repercussions, I had to speak the truth quite openly to thosewho were prepared to listen. These words, then are written as the final stage of thefulfillment of a pledge* made to the women of Alamet prison on Saturn. Thesewomen are now free or living in exile, but other Saturnians have taken their place. Iwill write a story of what happened to me in a spirit of love and hope, for my

Page 10: Guia InglesVI

experience has convinced me of the incredible and unconquerable goodness inpeople.

When the world was still young, according to the Bible, the Tower of Babel roseabove the Plain of Shinar, and in it lived the descendents of Noah, all that were leftof the world’s people after the Flood. The Lord came to them, caused a confusion oftongues, and spread them over the earth. They could then no longer understand each other.

The world is no longer young, but its people, still plagued by a confusion of tongues, seem to have just as much difficulty understanding each other. Besides that, theworld has grown smaller. A person can now circle the planet earth in 36 hours.Telstar and other communication satellites beam television programs simultaneouslyto earth’s not-so-far corners. But, how universal is reception of those programs whenthe people of the earth speak some 3,000 different languages?

Many linguists, anthropologists, and other experts feel that the answer to such lackof communication is some kind of international language. It might be an artificial

I want to say a few things about the development of the contemporary theatre: thetype of drama associated with the names writers in France, Britain, Italy and elsewhere. Studies on theatre subjects tend to the ephemeral; in most book shops the autobiographies of star actors and collections of last year’s hits on the shelves have a tired look. I should not have written this if I had not been convinced that the subject has an importance transcending the somewhat confined world of theatrical literature. The theatre, in spite of its operant eclipse through the rise of the mass media, remains of immense and grousing significance precisely because of the spread of cinema and television. These mass media are too ponderous and costly to allow much experiment and innovation. No métier how restricted the theatre and its audience may be, it is on the living stage that the actors and playwrights* of the mass media the trained and gain their experience, and that the material of the mass media is tested. The theatre of today is perhaps the main influence on the mass media of tomorrow. And the mass media, in turn, shape a great deal of the thought and feeling of people…

I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day tosatisfy their bodies, education and culture to satisfy their minds; and dignity, justiceand freedom to satisfy their spirits… I still believe that some day mankind will bowbefore the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, andthat non-violent goodwill will proclaim the rule of the land. VLADIMIR MAYAKOVSKY. Russian poet and playwright, later canonized poetlaureate of the Revolution by Stalin, he was literary star of the post-Revolutionperiod of the 1920s. (He and rival Sergei Esenin contended for the role ofspokesman* for the proletariat and the new order). Although never a member of theCommunist Party, Mayakovsky became the troubadour of the Revolution andBolshevism, and he was a superb propagandist, creating thousands of poems, advertisements, posters, and slogans to sell Lenin and the Soviets to the masses.

Matching the age in which he lived, Mayakovsky was dramatic and demanding. Hisemotions-his love of women, his need for love, his need to belong, and his lonelinesswere, like his physical presence, larger that life.

“Everything enjoyable in life is illegal, immoral, or fattening.” Moan those who areoverweight. To help take the derivation out of dieting, the American food industryhas produced several kinds of dietetic foods for people who want to take off excessweight. Why all this emphasis upon staying thin? It is partly because doctors say thatextra weight decreases life expectancy. It is also vanity; a slim figure is basic to theAmerican ideal of feminine beauty, and a “potbelly” detracts from a man’sappearance, too.

Questions 21-26

Read the following paragraph.

The returning boomerang is constructed in such a way that it sails on a circular trajectory and returns to the thrower. A trained hunter can throw a boomerang so that it will sweep up to a height of 50 feet in diameter, and then spin along several smaller iterative circles before it lands near the thrower. Experts can make boomerangs ricochet off the ground, circle, and come back. Hunters use them to drive birds into nets by making the boomerang spin above the flock sufficiently high to fool the birds into reacting to it as if it were a predator. Ordinarily, a returning boomerang is 12 to 30 inches long, 1 to 3 inches wide, and less than half an inch thick. Its notorious pointed ends are not honed enough to allow the boomerang to serve as a weapon or to be even remotely threatening. By contrast, the nonreturning boomerang is substantially heavier and can be used as a weapon. This type of boomerang is made to be 3 to 5 inches indiameter and 2 to 3 feet long, and may weigh up to 2 pounds. The power with which the boomerang hits its target is sufficient to kill or maim either an animal or a foe. All boomerangs are hurled in the same manner. The thrower grasps one end, pointing both ends outward. Having positioned the boomerang above and behind the shoulder, the thrower propels it forward with a snapping wrist motion to give it a twirl. The quality of the initial twirl conveys the propulsion to the weapon and provides its distinctive momentum.

COMPUTERS.MAN HAS USED COMPÜTERS POR ABOUT THIRTY YEARS.ROW,HE HAS USED THEM TO COUNT MONEY,TO SOLVE MATHEMATICAL PROBLEMS,TO SEND SPACECRAFTS TO THE MOON...AND TO FIND HUSBANDS AND WIVES FOR PEOPLE.

AT FIRST COMPÜTERS WERE VERY BIG ÁND DIFFICULT TO OPÉRATE.THE OPERATOR PUT CARDS WITH INFORMATION INTO THE COMPUTER AND THE COMPUTER PRINTED THE ANSWER OR SOLUTION ON A SHEET OF PAPER.BUT SINCE 1960.OPERATORS HAVE USED TAPES AND DISCKS IN COMPÜTERS AND THEY HAVE ASKED THE "QUESTIONS" ON A KIND OF TYPEWRITER.(YOU CAN SEE THEM IN BANKS AND AIRLINES OFFICES).

RECENTLY,SCIENTISTS HAVE DEVELOPED THE "MICRO CIRCUIT".NOW A COMPUTER CAN BE AS SMALL AS A CIGARETTE PACKET. THE COMPUTER CIRCUITS ARE PRINTED ON VERY SMALL PIECES OF SILICON,AND LATELY PEOPLE HAVE MADE LITTLE COMPÜTERS TO PUT INSIDE YOUR TELEPHONE OR GAS STOVE.THE COMPUTER SWITCHES THE GAS STOVE ON OR OFF,OR CHANCES THE PHONE-CALL TO A DIFFERENT NUMBER.

MAN HAS INVENTED AND DEVELOPED MANY WONDERFUL THINGS BUT HE HAS NEVERN HAD A "THINKING" MACHINE BEFORE.
