Queensland, the Sunshine State
Australia consists of six states and two territories with English
being the official language. Queensland is one of the fastest
growing states in Australia with a seaboard to the Pacific Ocean.
It has a subtropical climate of mild winters and warm summers with
average temperatures ranging between 9-20C in mid-winter
and 21-30C in mid-summer. It has beautiful forests and surfing
beaches, national parks, mountain resorts and a safe, secure and
clean environment. The Great Barrier Reef and the Gold Coast are
among internationally famous tourist destinations in the state.
One of the greatest aspects of life in Queensland is the high level
of personal freedom that comes with a truly multicultural society.
People in Queensland have a wide variety of beliefs, philosophies
and practices and live harmoniously with personal freedoms and
rights protected by law.
The Cities of Brisbane, Gold Coastand Logan
Brisbane
The capital of Queensland is Brisbane, with a population of
approximately 1.6 million. It is a beautiful city set on the
Brisbane River with gardens and entertainment along the
riverbanks. In cosmopolitan Brisbane you can easily find foods
from all over the world catering for Queenslands multicultural
population. Brisbane has a vibrant Chinatown, performing arts,
entertainment and sporting complexes and the world famous
South Bank Parklands. Visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au
Gold Coast
One of the most multicultural cities in the world, the Gold Coastis about 45 minutes drive south of Brisbane, with a population of
approximately 425,000. It is one of Australias most popular
holiday destinations, offering international cuisines, a range of
entertainment, cinemas, theatre, theme parks and sporting
facilities. It also offers beautiful sandy beaches, national parks
and wildlife sanctuaries. Visit www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au
Logan
Situated 20 minutes drive south of Brisbane, Logan is
Queenslands third largest city and one of the fastest growing
regions in Australia. Logan is home to more than 170,000 people
from 161 different cultures. It boasts many varied activities,
including bushwalking in natural bushlands.
Visit www.logan.qld.gov.au
During your stay in Queensland you will have access to a wide
range of entertainment, a variety of restaurants and outdoorcoffee shops and extensive parklands. You can shop in the city
centre or at major suburban centres. During weekends there are
several markets, including Brisbanes Riverside Markets and
Carrara Markets at the Gold Coast.
If you begin your study in Semester 1, you will arrive in
Queenslands mid-summer; and the mid-winter if you start in
Semester 2. Up-to-date weather conditions in Queensland can
be found at http://weather.yahoo.com
The table below indicates the average temperature, humidity and
rainfall patterns, which will help you to prepare for the climate.
Dress
In Australia, the dress code is casual. Most students wear jeans or
trousers with casual tops and running shoes. More formal attire is
required if you undertake training in an industry environment and
for some social occasions.
If you are from the tropics, our winters may seem quite cold and
you will need some warmer clothing. Some people in Australia
wear shorts, brief tops and similar light clothing during summer,
so be prepared for different styles of dress from those of your
own country.
Swimming
The main swimming beaches are located at the Gold Coast and
the Sunshine Coast (about one hour from Brisbane).
You need to be very careful swimming in the surf and follow
some important rules. Safe swimming areas are identified by red
and yellow flags and are patrolled by lifesavers. Swim between
the flags! You should learn the rules of safe swimming and only
swim when lifesavers are on duty. Whenever you go into the sun,
use a high protection (SPF 15+) sunscreen and wear a hat.

Australian Government Visa Entry
RequirementsAll International students must obtain a student visa to study
in Australia.
For information, please refer to your Letter of Offer
accompanying this booklet and contact your nearest Australian
Diplomatic Mission (Embassy, High Commission, Consulate
General). As an international student, you must maintain a
full-time enrolment (minimum 30 credit points per semester).
Health Insurance(Overseas Student Health Cover OSHC)
International students (and their dependants) are required to
subscribe to the compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover
(OSHC) scheme for the duration of their studies in Australia
as a condition of the student visa.
The International Office will arrange your first payment of
OSHC with Worldcare Assist prior to your arrival. See the
Worldcare Assist website for information about health cover
www.worldcare.com.au
Australian Quarantine and Customs
Australias quarantine laws are very strict and many foodstuffs,
plants, animal products and some medicines may not be
brought into Australia. You MUST declare these items on the
Incoming Passenger Card that you receive on the aircraft before
arrival. These restrictions also apply to items being mailed to
Australia, so while staying in Australia you should let your
friends and family overseas know about declarable and
prohibited goods.
If you declare an item of quarantine concern as you arrive in
Australia, or if it is sent through the mail, it will be inspected by
a quarantine officer and returned to you if it passes inspection.
Articles may need to be treated before being returned to you.
In this case, you may choose to pay for the treatment or
re-export of the article, or have it destroyed. If you do notdeclare items of quarantine concern on arrival you may be liable
for on-the-spot fines or prosecution. Prohibited items sent to
Australia by mail may result in prosecution.
If you are unsure about whether or not your goods are
prohibited, you should declare them anyway and ask a
quarantine officer. You can check in advance by visiting the
Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) website:
www.aqis.gov.au
If you or your parents send belongings, such as a stereo system,
clothing or other personal items as unaccompanied luggage
before or after you arrive in Australia, you may have to pay GST
or duty on them.
Bringing a computer from home
If you choose to bring your computer with you, you should note
that there is a high Customs charge. However, if you declare:
> that the computer is for your personal use for the duration
of your study
> that you will take the computer back to your home country
when you leave Australia
and
> have a student visa
> have proof of your enrolment with Griffith University,
for example a copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment
> have with you, proof of purchase of your personal
computer showing that you have had it for 12 months
or more, then there is no Customs charge
You must be able to verify these points.

When to arrive
Orientation and enrolment programs take place before classes
begin in February and July. It is compulsory to attend
Orientation. Make travel arrangements that will allow you to
find accommodation and attend Orientation sessions before
semester begins. Failure to attend means that you will miss vital
information and experience delays in your enrolment. This can
make settling in more difficult. Please refer to your Orientation
program for dates - this program will be forwarded to you with
your offer.
Arriving in Australia
Before you leave the aircraft you will be asked to complete the
Australian Immigration Form and Customs, Quarantine and
Wildlife Statement given to you in transit. Keep all of these
documents with you. They will be required soon after you land.
Immigration check
When you arrive, your documents will be examined. You may be
asked some questions before your passport is stamped and you
are allowed to enter the baggage collect ion area.
Customs
A Customs Officer will check your Customs, Quarantine and
Wildlife Statement. If you have no items to declare you may
proceed via the green route. If you have declared goods you will
proceed through the red route. Even if you have nothing to
declare, you may be selected for a random baggage check.
At this point, your bags may be opened and checked.
Customs Officers may wish to interview you and will take
you to an interview room for your privacy. Penalties will be
imposed if you do not declare prohibited items or those on
which duty is payable, and for showing false receipts. If you are
concerned about your ability to communicate in English askfor an interpreter.
Please note: it is illegal to use a camera, video camera or
portable telephone in the Customs areas of the airport.

On-campus accommodation(Nathan and Mt Gravatt only)
You will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the
world for a well-rounded education, which includes academic
and peer support as well as an exciting calendar of sporting,
cultural and social events. At the same time, you have the
convenience of computer access to University resources and
library databases from your room.
There are six Colleges, which provide comfortable accommodation
for some 950 students. Approximately 45 per cent of the
residential population are international students who have come
from more than 30 different countries. As part of a supportive,
culturally diverse community, you will have an ideal opportunity
to learn about and share cross-cultural experiences.
Mt Gravatt and Nathan campuses are set in natural bushland
surroundings that give a unique character to the communal
lifestyle offered at Griffith. The Colleges are situated close to a
range of University facilities, including gymnasiums, ovals,
swimming pool, squash, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts,
general store, a range of food outlets, post office, Credit Union,
medical centre, hairdresser and travel agent.
The Colleges are an integral part of the Universitys academic
community. They provide attractive, comfortable and safe
environments for living and learning attractive not only in the
physical facilities provided but also in terms of convenient
access to classrooms, library and sporting facilities. They are
comfortable and safe in terms of personal security, and equally
important, as living and learning environments that set a tone
of acceptance and respect for residents with diverse
backgrounds, life experiences and points of view.
The collegiate and educational aspects of each College are
managed by a Head of College assisted by live-in Residential
Advisors. These staff members are also available to provide
academic and personal assistance to residents. Social, sporting
and cultural activities are organised by the Residents
Committees, elected each year by the residents.
Griffith Accommodation provides an Ethernet port in each
room, allowing students to connect their own computer to the
University network. The University network can connect to the
Internet, however this requires a computing account and
password issued by the University on enrolment. For this
reason, it may take a few days to access your email account and
the external Internet. Students are responsible for obtaining the
appropriate interface cards. Please note that Internet quota vary
between schools and may be based on the number of credit
points you are enrolled in.
Each room has a telephone with its own number. This means
that upon arrival callers can ring you on your own number
(this phone number is not available in advance).
Other services include:
> Voicemail
> External calls can be made to freecall 1800 numbers.
This includes the access numbers for most prepaid
phone cards.

Off-campus accommodation
Griffith Off-Campus Accommodation Service provides
assistance to international students who wish to live
off-campus and need help finding that accommodation.
Tips for finding off-campus accommodation:
> Arrive before Orientation this gives you time to look and
the chance to meet other students who are also looking for
accommodation and may like to share.
> Settle into your temporary accommodation then contact
Griffith Accommodation to discuss your off-campus
accommodation needs.
Staff will be available to give you advice on the most suitable
areas to find accommodation and take you to view such
accommodation at local real estate agents. While assistance is
provided, it is your responsibility to find your own permanent
accommodation and so it cannot be arranged on your behalf
prior to arrival.
Important note: You should not sign any legal document or pay
a bond until you have read and understood all the terms and
conditions. Griffith Accommodation or the International Student
Advisers are happy to help you if you are having difficulty
understanding these requirements.
Off-campus accommodation options available are:
> student accommodation
> rental accommodation houses, apartments/flats or units
> boarding houses
> share accommodation
> homestay
Note: You must make your own arrangements and pay the cost
of moving from temporary to permanent accommodation.
When you rent or share accommodation you will have initial
expenses that include a security bond (equivalent to one
months rent) connection of services (electricity, gas,
telephone) and purchase of furniture and other items.

While the Gold Coast and Logan campuses do not have on-
campus residential accommodation, both locations have
conveniently situated student accommodation within walking
distance to each campus.

Homestay accommodation
Homestay is accommodation offered to students by families
who live within commuting distance of Griffith University.
Homestay provides a supportive family environment to students
newly arrived in Australia.
Your homestay family will take an interest in you and your
studies. We hope that you become part of the family during your
time with them. The cost of homestay accommodation in 2004
is $175 per week and includes breakfast, dinner and a packed
lunch, if required. Washing, ironing, telephone and transport
costs remain your responsibility. Payment is made directly to the
homestay family and two weeks notice should be given to the
family if you decide to move to other accommodation.
All homestays are different. In some households students will be
required to prepare their own breakfast and lunch and will also
be required to clean their own bedroom and make their own bed
and generally lend a hand as do the sons and daughters of the
household. In Australia it is quite usual to take two buses and
travel for 45 minutes to your destination and it is also quite
usual for both homestay parents to be out at work all day.
Homestay should not be considered a substitute for temporary
accommodation. Minimum time in homestay is 4 weeks,
payable in advance.
To arrange this type of accommodation, please return the form
at the back of this booklet.
Please note that if you choose to stay in homestay it is not
appropriate to expect the host family to offer accommodation
to parents or other relations travelling with you. You will need to
book hotel accommodation for your guests in this case.

Q. My family and I plan to arrive in Brisbane two weeks
before the course begins. Could you please arrange
accommodation for myself, wife and two children?
A. We do not have any family accommodation but we can arrange
temporary accommodation for you. It can be expensive and for
this reason we advise you to come alone at first. Once you have
found suitable accommodation, then send for your family.
Q. Will I need to provide my own bedding or is this provided
in your College?
A. You can purchase bed linen from Griffith Accommodation if youdo not wish to provide your own. For your first two weeks these
are provided free of charge. In addition, reasonably priced bed
linen and pillows can be purchased from discount stores such as
K Mart, Big W or Target.
Q. Because of religious dietary requirements I would not
require meals prepared by the Colleges. Would it be possible
for me to have a self-catered room?
A. You can either apply for a self-catered room in one of the flats
or arrange with the Manager, who is sensitive to students dietary
needs, to have special meals. Also note that fridges and cupboard
space are shared.
Q. I am a mature-age student. Because of this, I do not want
to live on campus with noisy young undergraduate students.
Do you have accommodation specifically for mature
students?
A. Carnarvon College is set aside solely for postgraduate
students.
Q. Is there a limit to the time I can live in one of the Colleges?
A. No, there is no time limit but you must be an enrolled student.
Q. Would I be able to make payment by using my MasterCardor VISA card?
A. You can pay by credit card at the University Cashiers Office
only, or credit card details, including the expiry date and your
name, can be faxed to International Accommodation.
Q. Am I guaranteed on-campus accommodation if this is my
first choice?
A. No, each year the demand for all types of on-campus
accommodation exceeds supply. However, we make every effort
to assist you in finding suitable affordable accommodation.
Q. What happens if I dont get into Universityaccommodation?
A. There is a plentiful supply of affordable housing to rent in the
private sector. Griffith Accommodation will help you to locate
somewhere to live. You should plan to arrive early so you have
time to find a place to live.
Q. If I dont get into College in my first semester, can I do so
in other semesters?
A. Yes, you can make an application and put your name down on a
waiting list.
Q. I have special accommodation needs, how can you help?
A. You should apply to the Manager as early as possible by letter
and attach any supporting documentation.
Q. Will I have to take out insurance to cover my personal
belongings?
A. To protect your personal belongings you are strongly advised
to purchase insurance before you leave home or from a
reputable Australian company located in the Yellow Pages
telephone directory.
Q. Can I use appliances?
A. Australian electricity is 240v, 50 HzAC. You will need your own
voltage adaptors.
Q. Can I obtain a meal plan if I live in the postgraduate
College?
A. Yes. You may choose to purchase a full meal plan oralternatively purchase just some meals in the Residential
Dining Room.
Q. How can I pay my fees?

Frequently asked questions abouton-campus accommodation

7/30/2019 Gu.edu.au
23/36
Griffith University:ESSENTIALINFORMATION:International students2004
Orientation and enrolment
During the orientation program a number of important issues
will be covered for your information:
> enrolment and school information
> study skills and information about the academic culture
at Griffith University
> meeting key staff and finding out about services on
campus that will help you in your studies
> social activities, both on and off campus
> credit advice for students with qualifications fromprevious studies
Please note: Attendance at Orientation is compulsory. Late
arrival and enrolment will make your adjustment more difficult.
What to do on arrival
Attend a Pre-Orientation Session to be eligible to collect your
enrolment kit. This kit will provide you with information and
instructions on how to enrol in your program on-line at Griffith
University. Griffith University has an on-line enrolment service, enabling all students to enrol themselves in their programs using
the Griffith University Learning@GU website. You do not require
your own computer as the University will have specifically
designated computer labs available. Your enrolment kit will
contain information on how to use the on-line service and
directions to the Universitys on-campus computer facilities and
help-desk services.
At the first session of Orientation you will also be given a kit
that contains all the information you need to participate in
Orientation Week. International Office staff look forward to
meeting new students in person, and may be able to help if you
have any concerns.
Understanding the universitysystem
In Australian universities, students are encouraged not only to
learn, but to think critically, about issues being considered.
There is often lively debate in lectures and tutorials as teachers
and students analyse and discuss their ideas. As you become
more confident, you will learn to join the discussions and share
your ideas and experiences with others. You will learn from each
other and develop important social and interpersonal skills.
The academic year is divided into two semesters. There is a
vacation of four weeks between the two semesters and aone-week vacation within each of the semesters.
Please take time to visit the Griffith University website at:
www.gu.edu.au to become familiar with your program and
University policies and rules. Most courses at Griffith have an
on-line component and students are expected to be familiar
with the Griffith website.
To satisfy visa conditions, international students must be
enrolled on a full-time basis. A full-time load is a minimum of
30 credit points.
Teaching and learning
Depending on the nature of your program, you are likely
to experience some of the following methods of teaching
and learning.
Lectures
Lectures allow lecturers to give information to a large number
of students. This form of teaching is the most traditional in
higher education.
Tutorials and seminars
These are smaller groups that allow the tutor to discuss your
work in depth and give you the opportunity to ask questions
and develop your understanding of the subject. Tutorials often
are casual and do not require the formality of raising your hand
to ask a question. During the semester you may be required to
present a seminar paper to fellow students. This will require
more intensive research of the given topic. Prior preparation
will enable you to get maximum benefit from the tutorial
or seminar.
Workshop, laboratory or studio sessions
In a course with a practical element, you will spend time
developing skills and expertise through practical work and
experiments. It is likely that afterwards you will have to write
up the results of the session.
Field study
Your studies may involve trips outside the University ranging
from one-day excursions to longer periods.
20
Starting university
-
7/30/2019 Gu.edu.au
24/36
Private study
You will be encouraged to be an active, independent learner.
Studying on your own will include reading, making notes,
researching, writing and revising. Tutors will be available to help
you but you will have to decide how much to put into your
learning and what methods suit you. Further information on
study skills will be available during Orientation.
Credit applications
If you wish to apply for credit towards your degree on the basis
of studies completed elsewhere, fill in the Application for Credit
Transfer form at the back of the Undergraduate or Postgraduate
Prospectus. Attach certified true copies of your academic
transcripts, and a syllabus and handbook from that institution, plus English translations if applicable, and send them to the
International Office. After submission of your credit application,
you will receive a Credit Pre-assessment, but must submit an
Application for Credit Transfer form, along with your Credit
Pre-Assessment letter, to Student Administration or
Postgraduate Student Services Centre on arrival.
Academic support
It is important to ask for academic support early in the
semester so that a small problem does not grow into a large
one. During Orientation you will be provided with information
on whom to contact for assistance.
Assessment
Assessment will vary depending on your study program but you
can expect reports, essays, tests, seminar presentations, small
group work and examinations at intervals throughout the
program. In many courses, students are expected to pass each
piece of assessment in order to successfully pass the course.
Students are not automatically entitled to repeat a piece of
assessment (e.g. examination) that they do not pass. Read your
course outline, which is available on the website, very carefully.
For information about rules relating to assignment deadlines and
assessment and examination guidelines, check with your school
office, course convenor, Student Administration or on-line, at:
www.griffith.edu.au/ua/aa/sta
Appeals
Where a student believes an error has been made or an injustice
done in respect of the grade awarded for a subject, they may
request a review of the grade. International Student Advisers at
the International Office can provide assistance and advice on
lodging an academic appeal. Please refer to the Student
Grievances and Appeals Policy website:
www.griffith.edu.au/ua/aa/studentappeals
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is viewed as a serious matter and may result in
exclusion from your course and cancellation of your enrolment.
If this occurs, your visa will be cancelled and you will be required
to return to your home country. Plagiarism includes:
> copying word-for-word sentences, paragraphs or
extracts from any source without acknowledgment in
the form of referencing
> submitting another students work in any form
> using other peoples ideas or research data without
acknowledgment
> references to a specific source that the student
has not read
If in doubt, check with a Course or Program Convenor.
WARNING: Students are expected to exhibit honesty and
ethical behaviour in undertaking assessment requirements of
courses. Deliberate plagiarism is considered to be cheating and
serious penalties may be applied.
REMEMBER: Do not copy anything without clearly identifying
the source.

Adjusting to a new culture
When students first leave home to study overseas, they
experience a period of adjustment. In Australia you have to
become familiar with a different academic system and adjust to
living with a new culture.
Most people who move to a new country experience what is
often referred to as culture shock. It is a perfectly natural
experience that almost everyone has when they move to a new
country. At first, you may be excited by the adventure and the
new experience of studying in a different country. Once you
become involved in finding your way about, learning our transport
system, looking for somewhere to live and other day-to-day
things you could do easily at home, you may become frustrated.
There may be many things you do not understand or know,
such as how to shop or the manner in which you should
communicate with other people. The meanings of some phrases
and gestures may not be easily understood. Be prepared for
different experiences when you arrive. Remember, many other
people have experienced how you feel but have gone on to
learn about their new culture and to feel comfortable and
familiar with their new surroundings.
Most Australians will understand the difficulties you may have
and be willing to help you. Australias population is made up with
as many as one fifth of citizens born overseas and many speak
other languages. There will be no expectation that you should
give up your own culture. Like many other new arrivals to this
country, you will be able to retain your own cultural heritage
but adjust to life in Australia as well.
Personal independence is emphasised in Australia. The broad
family support systems that exist in many other countries are
less common here. People often pursue their own relationships
and careers in a way that prevents them from being deeply
involved in the lives of their family members.
Australians tend to plan their time, work to schedules and
expect punctuality from others. Appointments, including
informal ones, should always be kept or an apology sent
beforehand. At the same time, Australians are friendly and open
with others. You might even be shocked on some occasions by a
persons willingness to talk about more personal issues even
though they may not know you well. Australians seldom use
titles and refer to most people, including important people, by
their first names. Most people you meet will expect to call you
by your first name and you should introduce yourself in a way
that will allow them to do so.
Take your time to settle in and be open to the new experience.
Try not to expect too much, too quickly and most of all, dontbe afraid to ask for help!
Cost of living
NOTE: The figures supplied in this section are estimates only.
All prices are quoted in Australian dollars and may be subject to
inflation or currency fluctuations.
Money and banking
In Australia, currency is based on a decimal system of
100 cents to the dollar A$ or AUD. Notes are issued in the
following values: $100, $50, $20, $10, $5, which differ in
colour. Coins are issued in: $2, $1, 50 cents, 20 cents,
10 cents, and 5 cents.
Personal cost of living - how muchmoney will you need?
You will require approximately A$15,000 - $18,000
(dependent upon your program) to meet your expenses each
year for accommodation, text books and other study materials,
as well as your personal expenses, including transport,
entertainment and recreation costs. This amount will not cover
major expenses such as the purchase of a car, television, stereo
or computer.
Motor vehicles are expensive in Australia. A new small car costs
at least A$14,000 and a reliable second-hand vehicle costs
about A$6,000. Car insurance and registration costs are about
A$1,000 per year. A television or stereo costs between A$400
and A$2,000 and a basic computer could cost up to A$3,000.
We recommend you bring at least A$3,000 with you to meet
your establishment costs (for example, bonds on rental
property, telephone connection charges, text books). It is
advisable to carry travellers cheques in Australian dollars as
these are secure and can be exchanged for cash at banks and
other locations such as major stores.
You should bring either some Australian currency with you or
exchange currency or travellers cheques at the airport on arrival
to pay immediate expenses. If you bring in Australian or foreign
currency of more than A$10,000 value, you must report this to
Customs Officials on arrival. Failure to report is an offence.
22
Settling in useful information
-
7/30/2019 Gu.edu.au
26/36
It is advisable to open a bank account immediately on arrival,
either on campus or close to your accommodation, so you can
transfer funds from overseas. Electronic transfers are
recommended because bank drafts from overseas will take a
minimum of 45 days to be cleared in Australia. You will needyour passport to open a bank account. International credit
cards, including MasterCard, VISA Card and American Express
are widely accepted in Australia. You may also be able to use
Diners Club and JCB cards.
If you transfer money from your country either by draft or
telegraphic transfer, you will need to allow A$15 to A$40 extra
for Australian bank charges to clear your funds.
Books and other study costs
Depending on your program of study, the cost of textbooks
varies between A$600 and A$1,000 per semester. You should
buy essential textbooks and use the University library for
supplementary reading. Textbooks, reference books,
publications of general interest and stationery are available at
bookshops on campuses.
Please note that your study program may involve additional
incidental expenses such as materials or field trips, which you
will be informed about at the beginning of your classes.
For example, if you undertake Queensland College of Art courses,
you can expect to spend between A$1,500 and A$2,500 per
year on materials and art supplies.
Computers
All students have access to 24-hour computer facilities.
However, you should be prepared to wait in line. It is advisable
to buy or rent your own computer for extra convenience.
If you choose to bring your computer with you, you should note
that there is a high customs charge. Please refer to the Before
Departure section in this booklet for more information.
Shopping for food
To be successful in your studies, it is important to eat well and
stay healthy. If this will be the first time you have lived away
from home, it is useful to learn some basic cooking skills before
you leave your country.
There is a wide range of ethnic foods available including
speciality shops catering for Indian, Fijian, Chinese, Korean,
Indonesian, Malaysian, Japanese, Filipino, Thai and
European cuisines.
It is important to know that Australia has a fixed price system.
There are ample options in the neighbourhood of the University
campuses for grocery supplies. Halal meat is available from
several outlets in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Addresses will
be available during Orientation Week.
Clothes and personal items
A full range of clothing is available for purchase in Brisbane and
the Gold Coast, ranging from low cost clothes to high fashion.
However, as clothing may be more expensive in Australia than
your own country, you are advised to bring sufficient clothing
with you, rather than buying clothes here. Prices vary and you
are advised to talk with local students about preferred places
to shop.
Property insurance - house contents
Although Australia is considered to be a safe country, burglary
and theft do happen. All students are encouraged to take out
contents insurance to safeguard their household contents such
as stereos, computers and other valuables.

DIMIA website: www.immi.gov.au Take your completed form tothe International Office for verification, then submit to DIMIA.
Please note that part-time work is not always easy to obtain
and there is no guarantee that you will find a job.
For information concerning employment, contact the Careers
and Employment Services Officer at Brisbane and Logan

hours per week after obtaining permission from DIMIA, you
should not expect to support yourself financially from casual

and affect your results.

Before leaving for Australia
useful tipsObtain a certification letter from your medical doctor if you
bring pharmaceutical drugs required for your medical treatment
into Australia. Customs Officers may ask you to explain the
purpose of your medication.
Have your teeth checked and any necessary dental work
completed in your home country. Dentistry is not covered by
the basic medical insurance.
Pack prescriptions for regular medications that you need
to take.
Bring a spare pair of spectacles or spare contact lenses, as
these may be expensive to replace in Australia. An optical
prescription may also be useful.
Purchase an adaptor to use your electrical appliances in
Australia. The standard voltage in Australia is 240 volt and
standard plugs have three flat pins. They are available from
most electrical retail or department stores.
Bring certified true copies of your academic transcripts,
relevant syllabus and handbook from that institution, plus
English translations, if applicable, if you wish to apply for credit
towards your degree on the basis of studies completed
elsewhere.
