Guardian is a sustainable solutions based program dedicated to reducing island dependency on imports- particularly energy and food- and developing opportunities for economic growth on islands

A P P R O A C H

Guardian brings together expertise from around the world, forming a team of individuals who have worked with a number of organisations in the drive to demonstrate both the necessity for a response to climate change, and the economic opportunity that this presents.

The Guardian approach focusses on two key components for successful sustainable development:

1.Creating a systems integration of utilities and infrastructure to establish the foundation from which sustainable communities can be effectively built- the goal is to build a community eco-system that is seamless and fully integrated

2.Building projects which demonstrate that sustainable solutions are profitable, developing a platform of projects that have strong revenue generating components embedded in each

Our model is centred around the Tourism sector, developing integrated pathways and tourism related businesses that ensure revenues remain on island. Our goals are to:

• Establish Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to enable projects

• Capture 30% of the current tourism market, building also a model for Tourism that meets the requirements of future markets

• Integrate project infrastructure (energy, water, waste, agriculture, transportation) to increase efficiency and reduce the local burden that has been encountered by tourism growth

• Diversify the job market, enhancing job creation and opportunities, keeping local talent and skills on island

• Establish a model which presents a platform of self funding opportunities and projects by Year 7 of the program

The Guardian solution builds tourism related business initiatives that bring together local expertise and skills and regional initiatives, developing a platform of opportunities for the market. Recognising the changing needs and wishes of the tourism market, and underpinning global commitment to a sustainable future, our approach opens up a wealth of tourist activities focussed on:

1.Mari-tourism (Sea)

2.Geo-Tourism (Land)

3.Agri-Tourism (Food Production)

4.Cultural Tourism (Communities)

waste water to grey water for use in our landscapes • Solid waste recycling and conversion to electricity • Organic waste composting for use as fertiliser • Eco transportation vehicles used on site,

including solar powered golf carts, seaways and biofuel buses

• Solar powered night lighting • Smart grid for both electricity and water

conservation efficiency • Green building materials, including furniture,

fixtures and equipment • Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) that

monitors performance before systems failure • Food production, e.g. greenhouses, vertical

Bringing together science, technology, innovation and economics, the Guardian program will implement and integrate a range of revenue generating projects on a number of islands.

The key outcomes of these projects will impact capacity building, job creation, capital independence and health and well being on islands.

The program identifies a portfolio of projects per island, including sustainability focussed lodging together with adventure/experience type activities and parks. Implementation of these projects follow a phased approach to achieve the program aims.

Andre Moltschaniwskyj and Craig Loomes, represent a New Zealand based naval architectural office with a world-wide reputation for the design of highly innovative boats covering a broad range of industries and applications. From the outset, their apprhas focused on designing efficient, lightweight boats using intelligent design and comprehensive R&D programs to go faster further with the least energy possible. In recent years, their work has formed a logical platform for the demonstration of sustainable technologies, resulting in boats such as the current world power boat circumnavigation record holder ‘Earthrace’ (later ‘Ady Gil’) which was powered by renewable bio-fuels – and the 31m photovoltaic powered catamaran PlanetSolar MS Turanor which became the first solar-powered vehicle to circle the globe.

Gaie Alling and Mark Van Thillo have been conducting coral reef research, data collection, and restoration for over twenty years. Their primary goal is to inspire intelligent stewardship of our earth’s biosphere. They achieve this objective by (1) implementing conservation programs which are community-based and sustainable; (2) creating educational programs that inspire people to care for the biosphere and get involved to make a difference; and (3) providing an unbiased, “trusted source” of data about the biosphere to users around the world. PCRF is unique in having a sailing ship to voyage the seas and work off remote Islands in Asia. Mir’s homeport is located at Raffles Marina, Singapore Gaie and Mark work hand-in-hand with indigenous peoples to help solve environmental challenges. They are “called to action” by the families living on shore who suffer from the decline in fisheries and not enough means to live in the modern world. Because each situation is different, they learn about the unique challenges and provide expertise to empower the community learn how to more effectively steward their land and sea.
