GTA V Remastered: 10 Reasons To
Revisit San Andreas
http://www.gamescdkey.com/news/gta-v-remastered-10-reasons-to-
revisit-san-andreas
It’s not uncommon to see massively popular games being re‐released for the next‐gen consoles –
Tomb Raider received a Definitive Edition earlier this year and The Last Of Us is coming to the
PlayStation 4 in a re‐mastered format too. Both games were phenomenal on the older systems last
year so it’s unsurprising that their developers wanted a chance to shine the games up that little bit
extra and re‐release them to up their sales a bit more. Grand Theft Auto V was also released last
year and, unsurprisingly, Rockstar have decided that their biggest title to date should find a new
home on the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 and the PC. In order to entice gamers back into San
Andreas, Rockstar are claiming that the game will have significant improvements to graphics with
improved weather effects and an increased density in population (both traffic and wildlife), thanks
to the superior hardware. That means that the highly controversial GTA Online will also be arriving
on next‐gen hardware this year. The game had a rough start to life as the servers crashed under
the millions trying to access it on launch; Rockstar is still trying to win fans’ approval back. The
next‐gen versions will allow you to port your Online character from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation
3 to whichever next‐gen platform you’ve selected which is a neat way to get people straight back
into the action online. Those are the ‘official’ reasons on why we should be rushing out to re‐buy
Grand Theft Auto V though. There’s nothing worse than a gamer feeling short changed, and so
we’ve come up with a list of reasons to revisit San Andreas with the updated version of Grand Theft
Auto V. Half of the selections in this article are missions which are exciting, funny, memorable and
deserving of another playthrough, whilst the other half are improvements we think will be
implemented thanks to the improved hardware of the next‐gen platforms or things you may have
forgotten about since your first trip through the game. Every item on this list is something we’re
looking forward to revisiting when GTA V hits shelves again; hopefully you’ll find something to
entice you back into the crazy world of Grand Theft Auto V too.
10. Father/Son
Watching Michael De Santa unravel as his past comes back to haunt him is one of the most
entertaining plot threads in Grand Theft Auto V and a lot of his issues are showcased in this early
mission. Michael’s son Jimmy tries to sell his father’s yacht for drug money; but instead the buyers
steal it with Jimmy still cowering inside. You can almost feel something inside Michael’s mind snap
as he frantically decides to chase the yacht down to rescue his son and save his beloved boat.
Luckily, he brings his new protégé Franklin along for the ride, who actually does a lot of the work
in this mission; climbing onto the moving yacht, fighting off some of the ‘buyers’ and helping Jimmy
get out. Michael’s main role is to stick close to the boat before catching his son as he hangs
precariously – and hilariously – over the highway from the yacht’s boom. This mission is highly
memorable for bringing back the series’ wacky sense of humour that was somewhat lost in Grand
Theft Auto IV and it sets the tone for the rest of the game perfectly. Revisiting it on next‐gen
platforms can only improve the experience too; Rockstar are apparently making the streets more
condensed with traffic, a change which would immediately add to the mayhem and challenge
to this mission. Having doubts about whether GTA V will be able to pull you in again? We’d wager
that Father/Son will feel like a massive homecoming.
9. Online Fun
People seemed to lose interest in GTA Online very quickly. Many were left disappointed by the
delay of online heists and a problematic launch period didn’t help either. Rockstar have tried their
best to make amends but for some, it was too little too late. Were those people being too hasty in
abandoning GTA Online for good though? There’s still a ton of fun to be had if you can put the time
in – thanks to the new creation tools, there’s a wider variety of races and jobs to undertake as
shown previously in series’ like Halo and Trials. A game’s community can make highly original and
entertaining content with the right tools, so if you were tired of driving the same courses over and
over again, you’ll find there’s a better mix now. Getting some friends together in Free Mode is a
guaranteed source of hilarity too, as you drive motorbikes off of Mount Chiliad or raid San Andreas’
military base for a chance to grab the jet plane stashed away there. Rockstar have been pretty good
at adding regular updates to the game too; they may not be as substantial as people desire but
adding new cars, weapons and missions on a regular basis helps keeps things fresh. GTA Online is
the sort of game which sucks hours of your life away at once, even if you were only going to do one
race or deathmatch, Rockstar will definitely use the power of the next‐gen consoles to enhance
the experience too, hopefully making GTA Online the multi‐year long experience we all wanted it
to be.
8. Grass Roots – Trevor And Michael
The Stranger missions in Grand Theft Auto V lead into some of the game’s… well, strange
encounters. All three protagonists will meet Barry, an advocate for the legalisation of marijuana,
but Trevor and Michael’s confrontations are particularly bizarre, thanks to some sampling sessions.
Both have vivid hallucinations which see them slaughtering their fears and laying them to rest –
literally. Trevor gets confronted by a rogue gang of clowns while Michael has to avoid an alien
abduction with the help of a minigun. Mowing down clowns with Trevor is particularly entertaining;
the horns of their clown vans creates a circus atmosphere and they even stop to do a little dance
before being riddled with bullets. How sweet. Afterwards, Trevor seems to lay his fears to rest;
Michael’s obsession with aliens continues throughout the game. At the very least, Grass Roots
shows just how unhinged our protagonists really are. Will the next‐gen releases increase the
entertainment of these missions? Who knows – at the very least, we could get some next‐gen
1080p drug haze effects. Remember kids, drugs are bad, m’kay?
7. New Single Player Content?
San Andreas is a big place, which means there’s still a lot of stories to be told in it. That’s the beauty
of Rockstar’s worlds; they’re so big and chaotic that we can quickly attach ourselves to new
protagonists and greet them like old friends. Grand Theft Auto IV had two single player add‐ons
which intertwined with the game’s main story beautifully whilst also introducing new lengthy story
arcs and characters. Grand Theft Auto V already has three protagonists but they all share one fairly
complete story; expanding the GTA V universe could allow us to see San Andreas in a different light
or simply continue the fun. And hey, if Trevor, Michael or Franklin want to pop up and make a
cameo appearance, who are we to argue? Of course, Rockstar could always lengthen the stories of
our ‘heroes’. We’ve seen a glimpse of Trevor and Michael’s past; perhaps we’re going to explore
their shared crime history more? However Rockstar choose to revisit San Andreas, it’s sure to be a
blast; The Lost And Damned and The Ballad Of Gay Tony added a significant amount of content to
GTA IV, each with a slightly different take on life in Liberty City. Re‐launching the game on Xbox One,
PlayStation 4 and PC gives Rockstar a great chance to add new single player content to the game.
It’s unlikely that any content would be exclusive to those platforms but introducing it first on next‐
gen platforms is a great incentive to buy the game all over again. Either way, adding a single player
to expansion to GTA V is a surefire money maker for Rockstar; we’ll undoubtedly see it sooner or
later. Owning the game on your new console means you won’t have to go digging for your 360 or
PS3 when the time finally arrives.
6. Friend Request
Grand Theft Auto isn’t all about guns and violence; some of the series’ most memorable moments
are found in its parodies of real‐life events and companies. The lives of the people of San Andreas
have been invaded by a new social network by the name of Lifeinvader; how unrealistic. Seemingly
everybody in the game has a profile and looking at the site though the in‐game internet can lead
to some funny references to past events in the game. Lifeinvader plays a key role in the mission
Friend Request; Michael has to infiltrate the company’s offices and plant an explosive device in a
prototype new phone. He buys some ‘youthful’ (garish) clothing and poses as an employee, leading
to him being mistaken for a tech support guy. This leads to a pretty funny mini‐game where you
have to click through a series of pop‐ups on a computer to run anti‐virus software on the
employee’s work station; the raunchy nature of the pop‐ups leave us with no questions about the
sort of sites this guy was visiting. This is the sort of stuff that showcases GTA’s humour perfectly –
it’s a simple comedy mission which sticks in the mind while being pretty inoffensive. Well, until you
dial the prototype phone whilst it’s being showcased at a press conference by Lifeinvader’s founder,
blowing his head off and allowing your friend Lester to generate a huge amount of profit on the
stock market. Come on, it’s Grand Theft Auto, you didn’t think it was going to stay inoffensive for
long, did you?
5. Online Heists
Without a doubt, the biggest complaint about GTA Online right now is the lack of online heists.
Originally promised as part of the GTA Online unveiling, a troubled start to Online life saw Rockstar
delay the Heist update repeatedly. They’re reportedly due to be released imminently but at this
point, who knows. By the time the next‐gen versions of Grand Theft Auto V roll out in “Fall”, online
heists should be up and running, so let’s discuss what we hope is included with this highly desired
updated. In the single player campaign, planning a heist is just as important as the actual heist itself.
Allowing us to plan our own heists online would add replay value by the bucketload; using different
routes, different escape vehicles and hitting up different areas would all contribute to providing an
experience that changes every time. Of course, it’ll be limited in some regards (there will probably
only be a couple of heists to begin with) but Rockstar will undoubtedly keep adding more with
every content patch they make. Plus, if they’re smart (which they are), they’ll open up the creative
tools to the community, allowing users to create their own heists from scratch. That might be a bit
of a stretch but it’s entirely possible. Hopefully, this will all be up and running fully by the time the
next‐gen versions of GTA V roll out, meaning there will be a wealth of content for you to enjoy if
you wait patiently for the updated versions of the game. Even if you do return to the 360 or PS3 as
soon as the heist update launches, the nature of these missions should keep you coming back for
more. Then again, Rockstar might delay the update till next year and we’ll watch as society tears
itself apart in fury. Come on Rockstar, release the update soon; the fate of the world may depend
on it.
4. Mr. Philips
The true breakout star of Grand Theft Auto V is a certain Mr. Trevor Philips. The anarchic business
man (hey, drugs are serious business too) captured gamers hearts when the game first launched,
thanks to his unique mix of insanity and heroism (well, he murders bad guys; that’s heroic, right?).
Trevor is introduced as a protagonist while Michael and Franklin are laying low after their first heist;
we’re introduced to Trevor’s misadventures in the desert with the mission Mr. Philips. Within the
first cutscene of this mission, we’re introduced to Trevor as he watches TV and learns that Michael
(his former partner) is still alive… all while he’s having sex. We’re then reintroduced to Johnny
Klebitz (protagonist of GTA IV’s Lost And Damned) before Trevor brutally murders him – all in the
same cutscene. Unhinged doesn’t even come close to describing Trevor’s state of mind. The
mission then consists of him mowing down the rest of the biker gang including Lost And Damned
supporting characters Terry and Clay as he seeks to consolidate himself as the leading meth dealer
in Blaine County. He also rams the trailer of another rival gang’s leader into the local river – all’s
fair in love and war, right? As far as introductions go, Trevor’s is perfect; Mr. Philips is a great
example of the chaos and destruction that Trevor will be bringing throughout the remainder of the
game. Replaying a mission usually makes it less fun but hopefully with the improved graphics of
the next‐gen version, we’ll be able to enjoy Trevor’s brand of mayhem even more.
3. San Andreas Itself
One of the problems with Grand Theft Auto IV was the setting; Liberty City was small and lacked
variety. GTA V’s San Andreas is huge by comparison and it’s got a great mixture of cityscapes and
rural areas. You’ll spend the majority of the game in Los Santos; driving and flying among the
enormous skyscrapers of the city’s central district, but the scale is obviously impressive, but it’s
beaten when you realise just how big the rest of San Andreas is outside the main city. Standing
atop Mount Chiliad and looking around is already a breathtaking sight – it’s hard to imagine what
it’ll look like with the improved draw distances of the next‐gen release. Improved lighting effects
will work wonders in the underwater ecosystem created by Rockstar and the added weather effects
will help make San Andreas even more realistic; Rockstar’s world already looks amazing, it seems
remarkable that they’re going to improve on it. These improved visuals also give you a good reason
to go back and explore the finer details of San Andreas; namely the easter eggs you missed the first
time round. Did you ever find the Vinewood Zombie? The No Country For Old Men Easter Egg? The
ghost that appears by the lighthouse? Rockstar love their hidden trinkets and secrets so you can
expect all of these to return as well as some new secrets. Most importantly though, the
improvement in graphics will make your in‐game selfies look better; and that’s an enhancement
that everybody can get behind… right?
2. Did Somebody Say Yoga?
Michael’s obsession with aliens comes to a head in this mission; who would have guessed that a
mission about yoga could be so damn entertaining? The mission begins with Michael’s wife
Amanda encouraging him to try yoga to improve his lifestyle. He reluctantly accepts and the player
takes part in three yoga mini‐games (including one which serves as a reference to the awesome
Dark Souls) before Michael gets annoyed at the instructor’s advances on his wife. After failing to
hit the guy and falling into the pool, he leaves to spend some quality time with his son… or, as it
turns out, to help him score some drugs. We’ve already established that Jimmy is a little tearaway
though, so he drugs Michael and steals his car. Michael endures some amazingly trippy scenes,
including the incredibly colourful free‐fall you can see above. He also receives a visit from his
favourite foreign bodies ‐ the Aliens – putting us under no doubt that Michael is very much on the
verge of a nervous breakdown. Like Grass Roots, the next‐gen version will probably do little to
enhance this highly memorable mission; it’ll simply be a great opportunity to revisit it.
1. The Paleto Score
When you look back on Grand Theft Auto V’s story, there’s probably a few missions which stick out
in your mind (hopefully, some of them will have featured on this list). Arguably though, there’s a
mission which stands head and shoulders above the others. The Paleto Score is a heist mission
which comes quite late on in the game. The actual heist is a small part of the mission, largely told
through a cutscene. The actual mission sees you controlling Trevor and Michael’s escape (plus the
hired hand you’ve selected) and to put it bluntly; it’s insane. Our heroes emerge from the bank
dressed in Juggernaut suits, ready to endure the police assault waiting for them outside. Trevor
ups the ante though, wielding a minigun which he uses to destroy a helicopter. Rhino tanks are also
flown in as Franklin turns up to help the crew escape in a bulldozer (he carries them in the front
loader). They then make their escape to the nearby train tracks via a Cluckin’ Bell factory. It’s
unadulterated mayhem and it’s exactly the sort of action that has made the Grand Theft Auto series
so highly praised. There’s even an optional challenge within the game (needed to get a gold medal
in the mission) to cause a million dollars worth of damage – it’s clear that Rockstar designed this
mission simply to let players cause havoc with a minigun. According to the press release on the
new next‐gen re‐releases, damage to the environment will be more evident; if that’s the case, The
Paleto Score should be a great showcase of that. Watching the damage a Rhino reaps on a small
town would be amazing if the upgrades are as good as they sound and Trevor’s minigun might be
able to match it. Of course, you won’t be able to level the entire town (sadly) but actually seeing
the effects of a rocket shell narrowly missing you and plowing into a wall would help increase the
action dramatically. Above all other missions, The Paleto Score could benefit drastically from the
improvements to the game’s graphics and physics. Let’s hope Rockstar felt the same way.
