or this issue, we asked several mem-bers to name some of their favorite spots
around San Diego for food, wine, shopping, and just about anything else that spells “good times.” We would like to know about your particular
favorite hotel, restaurant, coffee shop or place to hang out. Email me at [email protected] and I’ll keep a list so we can include more selections in upcoming magazines.
I’ve mentioned before how important tourism is to our local economy. And when you increase LGBT tourism to San Diego, it benefits a number of businesses, not just those directly related to the usual ones you might think of. With the higher cost of luggage on flights, more tourists are picking up items in town. They bring their pets. They recreate too strenuously and need a massage or chiroprac-tor. And of course they frequent restaurants, bars, and shops not only in Hillcrest but also in other
neighborhoods. Finding them is our goal. To that end we developed our tourism website: www.gs-dgt.com and an app so tourists can load it on their favorite electronic device and refer to it while they are here.
In the coming months we will be adding some ex-citing features to our tourist website that can be of value to you as well as your out-of-town guests. Hotels, restaurants, bars, and tourist attractions will be able to post video or pictures and offer discounts there.
We’ll keep you informed as the tourism website develops and our outreach efforts to bring more LGBT visitors to San Diego expand. We’re team-ing up with Palm Springs, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle to grow all of our tourist markets in the west. Spread the word!

We San DiegoLocals Share Some of San Diego’s Coolest Neighborhood Favorites
San Diego is a city of unique neighborhoods with their own individual style and flavor. Kensington is as
different from East Village as that is from Pacific Beach. Charming, fun, urban and sometimes edgy – There’s something for everyone in these modern villages. Our diversity is what makes us great – and that diver-sity is reflected in our neighborhood restaurants, bars and shops. You may find an Ethiopian restaurant next to an Irish Pub next to a gay nightclub – and everyone pretty much gets along.
The favorite ‘gayborhood’ is Hill-crest, with its giant rainbow flag and an assortment of gay-friendly bars, restaurants, and shops who cater to LGBT people and all that are hip and open-minded. San Diego is a BIG place with fun and vibrant neighborhoods that are changing all the time.
When I travel to a new town I want to hang out with the locals and see the city from their perspective. So where do you find the real hotspots- those tried-and-true favorites? Ask the locals. They’ll point you in the right direction and even tell you where to find the secret parking spots. Here are some of our favorites:

Holiday shopping shouldn’t be a bummer. And frankly, I’d rather get something fun in my white elephant gift bag instead of a Snuggie. Here are some of my favorite holiday gift sources:

ctually, one of our favorite neighborhoods technically isn’t a neighborhood at all. Adams Avenue stretches west to east through some of San Diego’s most diverse neighborhoods – from University Heights, through NorthPark to Normal Heights to Kensington and beyond. A portion of it is even dubbed
‘Antique Row’ for the myriad of eclectic stores that line the street, along with coffee houses, bars, restaurants and small shops.
If you like to play a few games with your pitcher, make a stop at the Triple Crown Pub on Adams Avenue for the usual suspects like pool and ping pong plus darts and shuffleboard. And a large smoking-friendly patio! Plus every NFL game broadcast on multiple TVs. www.triplecrownpubsd.com
Hanna’s Gourmet is the best of both worlds – stop by the cozy café in the heart of Antique Row for an inventive breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or choose from the delectable catering case and take some salads and cookies with you. Either way you will find yourself tantalized by Hanna’s gift for preparing world cuisines. www.hannasgourmetcatering.com
Make a point to stop at this place at least once a week to see what’s new and fabulous. Stuff Furniture Consignment Shop is constantly changing with unique, one-of-a-kind, restored and repurposed pieces includ-ing antiques, garden ornaments, desks, bookcases, original art, and more.

welcome to Mo’s UniversePut on your space suits and let’s have a cocktail!
Crest Cafe425 Robinson Avenue(619) 295-2510crestcafe.net Open 7am to Midnight364 days a year
There is a new mural on Robinson Avenue that is turning heads at the Crest Cafe. This new Urban Art Installation utilized
textures and colors that change as the sun pass-es overhead and now activates the largest empty space found in the immediate area. An employee of the Crest Cafe, Tom Gochenour, came with the idea to the owner, Cecelia Moreno, with the intention to erect the mural to commemorate the 30th Anniversary. “Cecelia took this idea to the next level,” said Tom. “I mentioned it to her in April and by May she had selected the artist, Cody Griffith, by June she had a raffle to see which of our customers would be immortalized in the mu-ral, and by July it was finished. Tom added,“I am incredibly thankful to the entire Moreno family for full-heartedly supporting this idea. The entire community now shares this gift as the cafe hits this great milestone.”
Does everything Chris Shaw touch turn to foodie gold? Well, yes. With four awesome, fun, and festive establishments under his belt, we’re waiting to see what Mo’s Universe does next. Meanwhile, if you have friends come to town, you may never need to leave this popular group of restaurants for your three square meals a day. And they even have a shuttle to transport you between the venues. How cool AND green!
They’re colorful, they’re fun, they’re Urban Mo’s. An adult playground where you’ll have the best time on any given afternoon, and an even better time in the evening while serving up the Best Burgers in Town!
Perhaps the perfect trifecta for a Sunday afternoon indulgences includes Gossip Grill, Baja Betty’s and Hillcrest Brew-ing Company. All are within a block of
each other in the heart of eastern Hillcrest.
Decked out with feminine inspired, post-Dada art and serving up Happy Hour 7 days a week with a side of American Comfort Food that will send your taste buds dancing. Gossip Grill
Serving colorful people colorful drinks and a hearty plate of Mexi-fresh cuisine, we showcase over 100 tequilas on our shelves, ensuring there’s always some-thing new to tickle your tongue. Baja Betty’s
The World’s First ‘Out and Proud LGBT Brewery’ is where we specialize in hand-crafted beer and stone oven pizzas with bottles, growlers & kegs to-go. Hillcrest Brewing Company.

As it turns out there there are a ton of great productivity apps designed for business owners to make some of the the most mundane tasks
more bearable but at the very least, quicker and easier to complete.
The following is a list of five productivity apps I really like and personally use with my busi-ness. Some of them are mobile apps (apps that you download onto your mobile device) and a few are web-based apps (apps that you access through a web browser on your computer or mobile device). All of these apps work on both the iPhoneTM and AndroidTM smartphones.
1) Evernote (Mobile/Web App) - One of my all-time favorite apps! Get organized, reduce paper clutter and increase productivity with this incredibly versatile application. Looking for an extension of your brain so you never forget anything? You’ve found it!
2) FollowUpThen (Web App) - Have you ever read an email but can’t deal with it for another two hours? Forward it to [email protected] and you’ll receive an email reminder in two hours! Go to www.follow-upthen.com for more information and all the combinations that are available.
3) Pixlr (Web App) - Want to modify a photo but don’t want to spend a ton of money on a photo editing program? Pixlr is a free service that has a ton of functionality and is perfect for the more advanced user. You can access this service at www.pixlr.com.
4) LogMeIn (Mobile App) - Have you ever wished you could access the computer back in your office because your forgot something? LogMeIn allows you to do that not only from another computer but from your mobile device as well! This is a free app and there is a no-cost option but if you want more advanced features, there is a yearly fee.
5) 1Password (Mobile App) - Do you struggle trying to find all of your passwords? Worse yet, do you use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of them all? 1Password not only stores all of your passwords in an extremely secure and encrypted manner, it will gener-ate random passwords for you and will even store credit card info, banking info, and any other information you need hidden away. The mobile version is $14.99 and the computer version is $49.99.

5 Great Productivity Apps for Busy EntrepreneursIf you’re an entrepreneur, chances are you prob-ably own a smartphone of some kind and maybe even a tablet. But turning these “pocket com-puters” into a productivity tool as opposed to an expensive toy to play games or waste time can be quite a challenge. And with the thousands of apps available for download, how do you know which ones are worthwhile?

Coit’s got Cleaning Solutions!
GOT
Got dirt? (And maybe some spilt pasta sauce?)Sure you do! Imagine you’re at an important business meeting, or on a hot date, or even your daughter’s graduation dinner. Suddenly, you drip linguine sauce on your new blouse or shirt. What do you do now? Many of us grab the napkin, make a request from Heav-en above that it isn’t permanent...and begin rubbing in the sauce. This is exactly what NOT to do! Here is your Cleaning Tip for the Day:
1. Pinch off as much of the sauce, or whatever you dribbled onto your shirt, using a napkin.
2. Place a cloth or paper napkin directly underneath the stain, inside the blouse or shirt.
3. Apply water (Club Soda would be better) with an-other napkin or cloth using a dabbing motion. (try not to spread the stained area)
4. Check results
5. Repeat using a fresh area of napkin and adjust the napkin underneath
6. Check results
Through this technique, you are “extracting” the spill in both directions and minimizing its permanent staining qualities. Of course some fabrics such as Silk or Suede require more professional techniques and applying water could aggravate the stain.

dirt ?. . .
You know they were in your kitchen.
They must have been — there’s a brand new stove
where the old one once stood. And yet, you still have
your doubts. The doorway’s not nicked. The floor is
not scratched. No footprints or gum wrappers lie in
their wake. And then, it dawns on you: these bootie-
wearing, vacuum-toting ninjas have indeed left you
a calling card — written in invisible ink, and it says:
“Here’s to Living Joyfully!”
Trained and certified to work on each and every type of appliance product that we carry, our very own Delivery, Installation and Service Team is unlike any other in America, because it’s internally staffed, and never outsourced. “Ten years. It’s an eternity and a split sec-ond. CityBeat’s first issue came out on Aug. 21, 2002, and it seems like a lifetime ago, and like yesterday.”
So said David Rolland in his “Editor’s Note” in CityBeat’s recent 10th-anniversary issue.
“One of the reasons CityBeat started was that no local mainstream media were provid-ing progressive perspectives,” Rolland con-tinued. “There’s a liberal alternative weekly in every large city in the country, and in most college towns, as well. But San Diego’s domi-nant weekly, The Reader, was—and still is—an anomaly in our industry; it doesn’t do liberal opinion. So, we stepped in, and I’d like to think that, as time passed and more and more people came to know us, we’ve increasingly made a difference. At the very least, we’ve voiced opinions that had been missing in the local press. Who knows, maybe we’ve even helped get some people elected.”
The Aug. 22 “Editor’s Note” went on to list CityBeat’s top 10 passions, one of which was LGBT rights: “Marriage equality is the civil-rights issue of this era, and CityBeat is proud to have been a vanguard in the battle against those who want to deny same-sex couples the same rights afforded to heterosexual couples. It’s fascinating that those people can’t look into the future and see themselves as equal to the bigots who fought against interracial marriage.”
CityBeat is the essential alternative weekly print and online guide to San Diego, and the best way to reach a diverse, open-minded audience. Our readership relies on us to find out where to go, what to do and how to get the inside scoop on what’s happening in Greater San Diego, each and every week, all year long. With many multi-media advertising options available with your GSDBA member discount, CityBeat can build an advertising package that best fits your budget and goals. Whether it’s print, web, email blasts, social media or events, we have what it takes to increase your bottom line and get new business through your doors. Having good vocal variety and using it in the right places in your presentation can make all the difference between being big
news and being a big snooze!
When I’m coaching, I encourage the use of what I call the Seven Variants of Vocal Variety. These are simple things that one can work on varying to make a moment in your presentation different from the one it follows. Some might be incorpo-rated into the same sentence while others might be a whole section done a certain way, especially if you’re creating a character to differentiate indi-vidual speakers in a story.
Let’s look at the seven points, from simplest to those requiring more practice:
1.Volume. It may sound simple but some people don’t vary this factor. I don’t want you screaming at your audience or making them strain to hear you, but boosting volume can point out passion for a word or phrase vs. lowering volume to convey softness and ease on a topic.
2. Pitch. Singing is not the only place that pitch is important and luckily, with speaking, you don’t even have to be “on pitch”. You just have to vary it. Whether you tend to have a high- or low-pitched voice, you are capable of going higher and lower than you typically do. Try saying the following phrase all in the same pitch and then again saying the italicized words at a somewhat higher pitch:
“We don’t sell like that and I can’t imagine why we’d want to!”
See how that sentence sounds more lively that way? I’d bet you increased your volume a bit as well, which is great, too (unless you’re reading this column in a cubicle…)
3) Speed. Some of us naturally speak faster than others and that’s okay, so long as you’re not losing the audience members who might not keep up. Yet too slow…and some attendees, especially younger ones, will lose interest. The key again? Variety.
Let’s try saying this example all at one speed and then again picking up the pace of the italicized portion and then finishing the phrase extra slowly:
“A key to customer loyalty - and this is especially true with women - is to show you’re really listening.”
If your pitch went up in the middle too, good for you! Why is this effective? Because the return to the slow-down for that last phrase now makes it seem more significant.
There’s so much to say on vocal variety that I’ll save the other four points for our next column.

The GSDBA now has its own Toastmasters club. A Toastmasters Interna-tional meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and parliamen-tary procedure. All of this in a positive, LGBT-friendly environment. Please join us as a guest at our next meeting to see what GSDBA Toastmas-ters is all about and how you can become involved. NEW MEETING LOCATION!The group will now meet every Thursday from 5:30 - 7 PM at the Inn at the Park Restaurant (street level) at 525 Spruce Street, San Diego, CA 92103 . There will be no meetings on GSDBA mixer nights.
Visit www.gsdba.org/group/gsdba-toastmasters for more information.

In case you hadn’t heard, our own Tracy Paye and Bill Bailey won the TMI area contests for best Tall Tales Speech and Best Evaluator. Both will represent the group in the district competi-tions and hopefully beyond! Not bad for a group only 6 months old!
Q: I’ve been told that I ought to use more vocal variety, but this doesn’t come natural to me. What can I do? - W.L., Tierrasanta, CA
