the history of unexpected

The Girl Scouts of America (GSA) is a youth organization for girls in the United States and American girls living abroad. GSA has been titled “The world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls.”

From the original 18 girls, Girl Scouting has grown to 3.7 million members. Girl Scouts is the largest educational organization for girls in the world and has influenced the more than 59 million girls, women and men who have belonged to it.

MARCH 12, 1912Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout Troop in Savannah, Ga.

1922The Girl Scout magazine The American Girl suggested cookie sales as a fund-raiser and provided recipes.

JUNE 10, 1915The organization was incorporated as Girl Scouts, Inc.

During World War I, girls learned about food production and conser-vation, sold war bonds, worked in hospitals, and collected peach pits for use in gas mask filters.

During World War II, Girl Scouts oper-ated bicycle courier services, invested more than 48,000 hours in Farm Aide projects, collected fat and scrap metal, and grew Victory Gardens.

Girl Scouts sponsored Defense Institutes, which taught 10,000 women survival skills and techniques for comforting children during blackouts and air raids.

the legacy of daisy> How Juliette Gordon Low brought American girls to modern era.

Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, was born Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon on October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Ga.

“Daisy,” as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was the second of six children of William Washington Gordon and Eleanor Kinzie Gordon. Family members on her father’s side were early settlers in Georgia, and her mother’s family played an important role in the founding of Chicago, Illinois.

Juliette Low was very athletic. From her childhood on, Daisy was a strong swimmer. She was Captain of a rowing team as a girl and learned to canoe as an adult. She was also an avid tennis player.

On December 21, 1886, her parents’ 29th wedding anniversary, Juliette married William Mackay Low, a wealthy Englishman. Although the couple moved to England, Juliette continued her travels and divided her time between the British Isles and America.

During the Spanish-American War, Juliette came back to America to aid in the war effort. She helped her mother organize a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers returning from Cuba. Her father, who had been a captain in the Confederate army, was commis-sioned as a general in the U.S. Army and served on the Puerto Rican Peace Commission.

At the end of the war, Juliette returned to England and to a disintegrating marriage. The Lows were separated at the time of her husband’s death in 1905. Juliette Gordon Low spent several years searching for something useful to do with her life. Her search ended in 1911, when she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, and became interested in the new youth movement. Afterwards, she channeled all her considerable energies into the fledgling movement.

Page 16: GSA Igniting Power And Achievement

page 16

Less than a year later, she returned to the United States and made her historic telephone call to a friend (a distant cousin), saying, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!” On March 12, 1912, Juliette Low gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. Margaret “Daisy Doots” Gordon, her niece and namesake, was the first registered mem-ber. The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year.

In developing the Girl Scout movement in the United States, Juliette brought girls of all backgrounds into the out-of-doors, giving them the opportunity to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness. She encouraged girls to prepare not only for traditional homemaking, but also for possible future roles as professional women—in the arts, sciences and business—and for active citizenship outside the home. Girl Scouting welcomed girls with disabilities at a time when they were excluded from many other activities. This idea seemed quite natural to Juliette, who never let deafness, back problems or cancer keep her from full participation in life.

Juliette Gordon Low accumulated admirers and friends of all ages, nationalities and walks of life. By maintaining contact with overseas Girl Guides and Girl Scouts during World War I, she helped lay the foundation for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. After her death from breast cancer in 1927, her friends honored her by establishing the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund, which finances international projects for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world.

clearing out the ashesThe image of the Girl Scout brand in the past.

GSA was a pioneer in bringing leadership and empowerment for young girls. How-ever, during the past 20 year the focus has shifted away from the feminist themes, and concentrated in other current topics like physical health, illiteracy, and nutrition advise, which has cost GSA its leadership position in girls empowerment.

Fire is a powerful force of nature. It is a symbol of passion, rebirth, and revolution. Fire on a torch symbolizes knowledge, wisdom, tolerance, and open-mindedness. Every nation on earth needs fire to survive, it unites us as one tribe.

GSA uses symbol of fire in its new logotype because like Phoenix bird it will be reborn from it’s own history creating a new Girl Scouts of America that is more powerful, more equal, and more accessible for girls across the continent.

Secondary

Colors in primary and secondary color palette represent different stages of burning. Ash, Carbon, and Charcoal stand for what is left after burn-ing. Colors named with different temperatures of flames imitate the actual color of flame in that temperature.

Flame 1500°F is the color of small f lame in the colored GSA logotype. Flame 1100°F is the color of small flame in the GSA Research Institute logotype.

Fire has different colors depending on the material of burning. Some chemicals and metals, such as magnesium, burn with blue flame due the tempera-ture of the reaction. This type of burning is often associated with science. This is why we chose it as the color of GSA Research Institute.

The symbol of fire presented in the GSA logotype can be used as a graphic element in designs. In this context it needs to be used as a separate element without the letters g, s, and a. It is recommened to blow the size up to create rather abstract feeling.

Colors used in this context should be Charcoal black on dark grey [C: 0, M: 0, Y: 0, K: 95] , Flame 2200°F yellow on white or Flame 2200°F yellow on Charcoal black. See the color guide for color values.

Some workshops and clubs, like chess, science, mechanics, computer programming/coding, and robotics will be arranged as ongoing year round hobbies. Others girls can add to GSA wish list, and if more that 5 girls in the same area are interested in particular area of interest GSA will strive to arranged a seasonal workshop for that, as well.

All the instructors in GSA Equal Skills workshops are acknowl-edged and experienced female instructors. It is important for girls to see that women can teach any of these skills and areas of inter-est, and that you don’t have to be man to fix a car or bike.

A girl who has already completed a workshop—or has an extensive knowledge in the field—can perform as an assistant to instructor or a tutor in this particular workshop. This will teach girls leader-ship skills, and social networking.

A girl has a dream job she wants to pursue, but she has no support network or adult in her life to tell her more about it. She wants to know more but doesn’t know who to talk to. Maybe she is willing to learn new skills.

After girls have completed their mentoring workshops and meetings, they can become tutors or network managers. Tutors participate in other meetings to assist the mentors, and network managers will find other girls interested in the similar field, and keep up the communi-cation among these girls.

Language and framing your speech are important skills. You can turn the debate to your advantage with just few sentences if you know how. Sometimes it is equally important to understand what other people are referring to. It’s not always easy to recognize derogatory language, especially if it happens in an unexpected situation.

How we speak defines the world and the society we live in. Learning to frame your speech right, and standing up for yourself is necessary for gender equality.

learn to listen and speak> Making world more equal starts from framing you speech.

GSA is inviting the most acknowledged language and speech experts—both men and women—around the world to share their wisdom in GSA’s biannual Stand Up For Yourself language and speech seminar. Our seminar performers vary from Hillary Clinton to George Lakoff, and Dalai Lama.

This seminar is open to both girls and their families, as well as non-members. However, GSA members pay notably smaller entrance fee or can volunteer and be rewarded with free entrance.

fight back

Walking out after dark. On you way home from piano lessons or that concert you’ve been waiting to see. It’s not late yet, but there seems to be dark alleys everywhere, and not nearly enough people around. Was that shadow moving? Is someone following you? You know you’d be worried unless you took self-defense classes at GSA. Now you know what to do if you have to.

GSA Fight Back self-defense workshop teaches girls of ages 10 to 18 years old to defend themselves from physical attacks. Workshops consist of basic self-defense training, self-awareness training, and reacting in a threatening situation.

After the beginners course girls can participate in our martial arts training, and along the way become martial arts instructors, if they will. The goal is to help girls to take charge of their safety and their bodies. The class also helps to form healthy body-image and self-esteem.

know how to defend yourself> Your safety starts from right skills and knowledge.

All the instructors in GSA Fight Back workshops are acknowledged and experienced female self-defense or martial arts instructors. It is important for girls to see that women can teach these skills and no testosterone is required to be proactive and fight back.

A girl who has already completed a workshop—or has an extensive knowledge in the field—can perform as an assistant to instructor or a tutor in this particular workshop. This will teach girls leader-ship skills, and social networking.

GSA Girl Intervention is an annual event that gathers girls and their parents together from all over the USA. The event is about girls themselves, and about unexpected or unwanted physical encounters that girls can have.

An unwanted or unexpected physical encounter can be a date rape, violent attack, bullying, sexual harassment, or even hostile or sexual suggestions about girls physical appearance. This even will strive to find ways to prevent these encounters and an open line of communi-cation about them.

stop unwanted physical encounters> Everyone should have right to live without fear of being harassed.

GSA Girl Intervention is mostly peer and instructor organized event that aims to give voice to the experiences girls have had. The goal is to start a conversation between girls themselves and their families about the physical harassment or sometimes even physical assaults girls have to encounter.

This seminar is open to both girls and their families, as well as non-members. However, GSA members pay notably smaller entrance fee or can volunteer and be rewarded with free entrance.

Throw like a girl. Talk like a girl. Fight like a girl. No wonder girls feel discouraged in this world when so many phrases that use the word “girl” have derogatory meaning. Wouldn’t you want to retreat yourself every now and then into environment where you are fully accepted and can express your girly thoughts and feelings freely without judgement?

GSA Room XX is a safe place for girls to express themselves, be themselves, and be girls without judgement, criticism, or mas-culine demands. It is a club house for GSA members to meet each others, arrange peer counseling or just hang out. The reviving experience of not having to be ashamed of being a girl will improve their self-image.

The spaces are specifically designed to make girls feel comfort-able and safe in them. Girls have had chance to participate in the process of creating these spaces.

asylum from the patriarchal world> Open the door to environment free of stress and judgement.

GSA Room XX is a club house environment dedicated only for GSA member girls. These club houses usually have a lounge, library, class room, bathrooms and a kitchen. Instructors are always present in Room XX during opening hours. Club houses can be used for trainings or workshops.

Room XX, as well as GSA, of course, accepts trans gender girls to enter the premises. Men and boys are not allowed in since this is “a girls only environment”.

find your own path in life

Everyone else seems to know what they are doing, right? You feel all alone with your troubles and questions about life. Who am I? What am I going to do tomorrow, next year, after high school? How does my future look like? Will I find a soulmate? Do I want children some day? What do I want to do with my life? Everyone has these questions, and now you can ask them out aloud.

feminine wisdom

History often was written by men. Therefore it is easier to find heros for boys than it is for girls. But this does not mean heroines do not exist. Imagine a girl growing up knowing great stories, quotes, and historical facts about strong women who were heroines, leaders, and equally powerful than men. This girl would grow up to know that her future is not pre-written.
