Dear LSA Family and Friends,

God has called each one of us to fulfill his purpose. The theme for the 2013-2014 school year is “You are Called” based on Romans 8:28. My prayer is that God will use Lutheran South Academy to bring children and their families into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. I know I speak for our entire staff when I say that I feel so blessed to be a part of this ministry.

I would like to thank you for your outstanding generosity in years past. We are truly grateful to have such strong support from our school families, alumni, and friends. You have helped to create a school climate that reinforces the excellent standards that we strive to achieve in all aspects of our students’ lives.

This past year, all three of our campus fundraising efforts had outstanding success. Through our Annual Fund, Gala, and Golf Tournament, we were able to raise over $380,000 to enhance and support the campus life for our students. Thank You!

It has been an exciting year at LSA! As we move forward and plan for the expansion of our campus, we are going to continue to have faith in your support. Not only financially, but also through prayer. As we grow, please pray for our students, families, faculty, and staff. Pray that God will use each one of us that He’s called to Lutheran South Academy to glorify His name in all that we do and that He would bless our efforts and open hearts of generosity.

Thank you in advance for your continued support of Lutheran South Academy. May the Pioneer spirit be alive in each of us as we glorify His name through our lives of service to Him.

Partnering in Christ,

Sheila PsencikHead of School

I was fortunate enough to

drop by LSA on opening day

and see some of the bright and

excited faces of the children.

Wow... there is a lot of them!

We, the Board, are thankful for

you parents entrusting your

children to LSA to receive a

Christian Quality Education.

Exciting things are happening

at LSA as the Capital Campaign

is in the process of moving

forward to provide for

additional facilities. We trust

that as Alumni, Parents, and

Friends you will be a part of this

venture. Thanks for your help in

the past as we look forward to

the future.

Sincerely,

Ben Schoppe – ‘55Chairman of the LEAH Board

This is a common question that gets asked by students and families who are new to LSA. They’ve heard of pioneers before. What they really want to know is why a “Pioneer” is our school mascot.

The word “pioneer” has its origin in the same word that gives us the words “peon” and “pawn.” These words don’t sound too glamorous as mascots. However, a peon originally was a person to whom a king would give land on the outskirts of a castle or kingdom. They were rugged individuals who were the first ones to confront invaders trying to overthrow the king. In the game of chess, pawns perform a similar function. They form the front line of battle, block the lines of easy enemy attack, and claim territory that will eventually be controlled by other pieces. If you’ve ever played against a skilled chess master, you’ve probably seen how important (and annoying) the seemingly insignificant pawns can be. Eventually, “pioneers” came to be the name given to a particular part of an army. The pioneers were the brains of the outfit, skilled mathematicians and engineers who figured out where and how to build roads and bridges and plotted the strategy that allowed the body of the army to advance

into enemy territory. While doing these jobs, pioneers had to be cunning and alert to avoid detection.

This concept came to be generalized to anyone who went somewhere or did something before others. That’s how we get pioneers of the American West, pioneers in science, pioneers of television, and so on. So, a pioneer is not just a hero in buckskins, but someone with skill, courage, spirit, and foresight who goes into new territories first in order to lead the way for others who follow. Sounds to me like an excellent name for a school’s mascot!

Who is the greatest pioneer? In Revelation 22:13 Jesus calls Himself the Alpha and Omega (or First and Last). St. Paul calls Jesus “the Firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20-23). This means that Jesus is our Pioneer over death. Hebrews 12:1, 2 says, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith.” In our adventure of faith Jesus leads the way. Jesus is THE PIONEER for every Pioneer at LSA. I can’t think of a better name than “Pioneer” to represent our school.

GROWING

GROWINGLSA

At Lutheran South Academy we are striving to “Secure Their Future” by providing the best possible Christian education that focuses on excellence in everything that we do. Our steady growth has given us the opportunity to share the Good News of Salvation with an increased number of students and their families, allowing us to live out our mission on a larger scale. With 880+ students and growing, LSA has adequate classroom space for up to 925 students but lacks the infrastructure to support the diverse needs of our growing student body. Throughout the years, we have done a great job of keeping up with the physical space for our academic needs but we have outgrown our current common use facilities. What a great problem to have!

In December of 2012, LEAH purchased 21.1 acres of land adjacent to our current property. Our plan is to develop this land to enhance this ministry. LSA has launched a $16 Million “Growing LSA” Capital Campaign to address the needs that our campus is facing. The term “growing” not only indicates what is happening to our school population and our campus, but also what is happening to Christ’s Kingdom through the Holy Spirit at LSA. We are so blessed and hope to prepare this ministry to meet the needs of a full campus for years to come.

12

The history of Lutheran South Academy extends back to 1949 when the original Lutheran High School of Houston on Woodridge was founded. In 1982, the school moved to the South 610 Loop and became Lutheran South High School. While on this campus, the school added a junior high. With changing times and demographics, it was determined that the school needed to relocate in order to grow. In 1998, the school relocated to its current location outside of Beltway 8 just north of Dixie Farm Road. With this move, the school changed its name once again to more adequately reflect its identity as it now included opportunities for Pre-K through 12th grade. Lutheran South Academy now serves over 800 students and their families from the Baytown, Clear Lake, Friendswood, Galveston, League City, Pasadena, and Pearland areas. While the location and offerings have changed through the years, the goal of the school has always remained constant. We exist to provide a quality Christian education to children.

Lutheran South Academy is a fully accredited college preparatory school through AdvancEd and NLSA. LSA was granted “Exemplary” status by the National Lutheran Accreditation Commission for the 2012-2013 school year. Lutheran South Academy was the first school in the state of Texas to achieve this status. This award is a testament to the culture of excellence at Lutheran South Academy.

A Chapel/Auditorium Facility Chapel services and fine arts performances are currently

conducted in the cafeteria using a makeshift stage requiring daily setup and take down. A more appropriate and

dedicated worship space is needed as well as a venue for Fine Arts productions including; Drama, Dance, Musical Theater,

Christmas Program, and Band and Choral Performances.

Expanded Cafeteria & Serving AreaCurrently, lunches begin at 10:40 and are served until after

1:20 pm to accommodate our 900+ students and staff. Lunch times had to be shortened to a 25 minute time

frame in order to service everyone.

Additional Gymnasium SpaceOur current gymnasium is used by 27 physical education classes daily, 6 volleyball teams, 12 basketball teams and

even our spring musical. Classes and teams are limited to short inconveniently timed practices. Locker room, weight room and training facilities were designed for 200 students

(in 1998) and do not meet the demands of our current study body of over 880 students.

Tennis CourtsCurrently, we rent court space through a contract with Bay Area Racquet Club for close to $30,000

per year for practices and meets.

New Track & Football/Soccer Stadium Our current track has suffered slab damage (due to the drought) and is no longer safe to use for competition. Our current football field is overused to the point that

we cannot keep the grass growing. Placing the new gymnasium complex on the current football field

site would require the move of the field.

A Nurse’s StationCurrently, we have makeshift medical stations

in 4 different locations.

Additional ParkingParking is at a premium on the LSA campus and during

special events it is so inadequate that we have people parking throughout the neighborhood creating some friction with

our neighbors and safety issues for our visitors.

Renovate our current gymnasium/locker rooms into a chapel /auditorium with stage, lighting,

sound, fixed seating and ancillary rooms.

Expand and redesign the current cafeteria with an expanded kitchen and larger seating area.

Build a gym complex adequate in size to meet the instructional and training needs of

880 students and athletes. It will be centrally located on campus for easy access by all grade levels—

built on our current football field location.

Build our own tennis court facility that would allow our tennis teams to practice and compete on campus.

Build a new football/soccer stadium using synthetic turf on the newly acquired land. Build additional

practice fields on the newly acquired site.

Renovate our current athletic office into a school medical clinic.

Construct additional parking spaces on the recently acquired land with access from both Ryewater and Dixie Farm Road.

Master Site Concept

Future PlansSince relocating in 1998, Lutheran South Academy has been growing and building. With the purchase of the 21.1 acres adjacent to our current football field, Lutheran South Academy now has the opportunity to expand and enhance our facilities. The improvements that are itemized on our ‘Needs List’ will make our school unparalleled in terms of the facilities that we would be able to offer to our students and families.

The Lutheran South Academy Annual Fund consists of hundreds of operating gifts from LSA’s loyal alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends. These contributions benefit LSA students and faculty by helping to provide items and pay for events that may not be included in the operating budget. Last year, the Annual Fund provided nearly $80,000 to enhance the ministry at LSA. The Annual Fund is a key source of expendable support that impacts virtually every program on our campus. Gifts to the Annual Fund: • Further our community service efforts • Enhance academic and student life • Advance our Christian mission • Support our areas of greatest need • Provide the “extras” that help make LSA unique

Last year, contributions to the Annual Fund were used in many different areas of campus life including: • Student Travel Expenses • Technology Upgrades • Professional Development • Community Events • Academic Contests • Campus Facility Repairs & Beautification

You may wonder…why give to the Annual Fund? Here are just a few great reasons: • Changing the life of a student is a pretty good return on investment. • Giving back to Lutheran South Academy because Lutheran South Academy (Lutheran High School, Lutheran High South) has given so much to you. • You love Christian education.

Partners in Christ:During the summer of 2012, Ms.

Kerri Rapp went on a service trip with Glorybound Texas during the Texas Youth Gathering to Comunidad de Gracia Lutheran Church in Houston. While there, Ms. Rapp met Perla Rodriguez, one of the lay leaders at this LCMS Hispanic Mission Church.

It was not long before Ms. Rapp, a current LSA Middle School teacher, discovered that Mrs. Rodriguez is a former Lutheran High South student. This meeting has resulted in a partnership between LSA and Comunidad de Gracia (formerly St. John’s Lutheran Church and School). The church building was built in 1948 and throughout it’s time as St. John’s was primarily an Anglo congregation. St. John’s Lutheran Church closed in 1996. In 2005, Rev. Nelson Rodriguez and Perla were called to be the lay leaders (missionaries) to Comunidad de Gracia and start a Hispanic mission church at the site of the old St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Throughout the service event, Ms. Rapp felt a calling to help this church and Mrs. Rodriguez beyond this event. When Ms. Rapp returned to LSA in the fall, she shared the needs of the mission

with the Middle School Principal, Jeremy Brumm. From there, several service days were set up for LSA students to travel to Comunidad de Gracia and help out. After two successful trips to the mission, more dates were set up as it became clear that not only were our students helping the parishioners but the mission was changing the lives of our students and families as well.

“Our partnership has become more so of that of a family. We love LSA because they have embraced and shown love to our ministry, our congregation, as well as to our community. They have shown us the love of Christ without any boundaries. They have extended their help to us in our time of need and its clear that they have responded to God’s voice, as He called them to do His will. They all (students, parents, and faculty) have shown us much love and extended their friendship to us and are always ready to lift their hands to carry out God’s plan” said Mrs. Rodriguez. “I feel that our partnership with LSA is unique; one that every ministry, such as ours, seeks and needs. We are truly very blessed and thankful for their partnership and each one of them individually.”

Comunidad de Gracia and LSA have partnered together to reach out to the community through the mission’s food pantry. LSA has helped Comunidad de Gracia with their ministry in more ways than one. The students have served at many food pantry events to assist the mission community with food distribution. LSA has also done “can drives” and “toy drives” at their school to provide food for the pantry and toys for Christmas. This enables the church to feed and reach out to over 200 families in the community with the love of Christ at their many events. The mission church currently hosts food distributions twice a month.

One of the other needs that LSA has met was providing new sanctuary doors. Since moving into the building in 2005, the church has been praying for a way to replace the broken down doors. Through the partnership and a very generous LSA family, a new set of doors has been installed to welcome parishioners to the church.

As Lutheran South Academy and Comunidad de Gracia continue their partnership, they continue in a common goal – to bring people closer to Christ.

Mr. Gary Himmler was selected by the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program to serve as an AP Physics Reader at the Annual AP Reading. The AP Program offers 34 courses in a wide variety of subject areas. In May 2013, more than 2.2 million exceptional students from around the globe took approximately 3.9 million AP Examinations. In June 2013, Mr. Himmler traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to evaluate and score free response answers on the AP Physics Exam. The careful evaluation of students’ work is one of the most important aspects of the AP Program. The AP Program’s acknowledged success is due to an evaluation and scoring process that reflects the high standards of faculty members who, by virtue of their experience and expertise, have the appropriate student performance expectations within their respective disciplines. Congratulations to Mr. Gary Himmler on being selected for this important role.

Each year, the LCMS Texas District Office recognizes outstanding educators from across our state. This year, two LSA teachers were selected as finalists for this award. Mr. Bruce Baacke (HS Registrar, Assistant Principal and Math Teacher) and Mr. Archie Buchman (HS Social Studies and HAMUN sponsor) were both honored for their outstanding dedication to education. Both of these men were publically recognized during the Texas District Educator’s Conference that was held in Austin on November 18 - 20. At this conference Mr. Bruce Baacke was selected as the LCMS Texas District Educator of the Year. Congratulations to Bruce and Archie on this honor!

On the afternoon of February 6, 2013, Lutheran South Academy welcomed a former Pioneer back to campus. George Schmidt (‘57) from Virginia Beach, VA stopped by to say hello. He was visiting Houston before boarding a cruise out of Galveston with friends from around the world. While in high school, Geroge earned his Amateur Radio License and started up the very first Ra-dio Club at LHS. The club had it’s very own radio station located in the science laboratory and was sponsored by Mr. Gummelt. This is a hobby that he has kept up with ever since. In fact, the friends that he was meeting on the cruise were all HAM radio enthusiasts as well. When George left LHS, he enlisted in the Navy and made a career out of it. He started off as an enlisted Aviation Electronics Technician, advanced to Senior Chief Petty Of-

16

George SchmidtPioneer,

ficer, and then was commissioned and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. George married his “Memphis Belle”, Evelyn, and they were married for 46 years before she was called home in 2007. George and Evelyn were blessed with 4 children.During his visit to LSA, George shared that he has a couple of other hobbies that keep him busy too. He is a model train enthusiast and a licensed private pilot who is a proud owner of a 1945 Piper J3 Cub.Throughout his life, George has remained active in his faith and in his church community. He currently is an Elder at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where he also sings in the choir. In addition to church, he holds a District office with Lutheran Layman’s League and serves as a Port Chaplain in the Seafarer’s ministry.

After graduating from Lutheran South Academy I headed up north to study biology at Wheaton College in Illinois. Aside from my studies, I’m planning to get involved in a local church, a dance group, and small group activities in my dorm. One of the main reasons I chose Wheaton was because at LSA I had such caring teachers and enjoyed being able to talk to them both inside and outside the classroom. At Wheaton there is a similar importance placed on student-teacher interaction.Rachel JohnsonSalutatorian 2013

After an intensive college search, I have committed to the Business Honors Program (BHP) at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas-Austin. In addition to BHP, I plan to double major in actuarial science and continue to pursue Spanish courses. My 10 years at LSA have provided me with many opportunities to explore my interests and talents as well as to continue to grow in my spiritual faith. LSA’s small Christian environment has prepared me academically, socially, and spiri-tually for the vast opportunities that UT and Austin have to offer. I am more than ready to begin this new adventure! Always a Pioneer, Mariette PeltierValadictorian 2013

The stained glass windows that were donated by the Classes of 1962 and 1965 have been restored and are back on display to shine the Light of Christ for all to see. These beautiful windows have been in storage for over 33 years. Last year, they were uncovered while the current administration was organizing our storage room. Right then and there, it was decided that these incredible pieces of Pioneer history needed to be restored and showcased. Members of these two classes graciously donated the fund to have these windows restored. The Class of 1962 window is on display in the Administration Office to welcome all guests to our campus and the Class of 1965 window is located at the entrance of the High School building as a great reminder of our Lutheran heritage.

36Thank you Class of ‘62 and ‘65 for these beautiful pieces of LHS history!
