From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

If you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.

Let them grow together until harvest……(Luke 13.27)

I gave my first homily as a priest in my first parish assignment 33 years ago this weekend. The gospel was to-day’s gospel about Jesus’ advice that it is better to let the weeds and wheat grow side by side so as to save all the wheat. I shared with the parish that I was glad that God hadn’t harvested me because up to that time there had been more weeds than wheat. As a teenager and young adult I had be-come out of control and rooted in in-appropriate behavior—kind of like a weed! I would say again today, thanks to God, for giving my life a chance to bear good fruit! Jesus counsels a divine patience and acceptance that might be hard for us to grasp. Look at Jesus on the cross, arms outstretched, as if to say, “I em-brace it all. On the one hand your success and best efforts to draw near to Grace, and on the other hand your refusals to come to me.” Jesus em-braces our “yes” and makes the most of it; Jesus accepts our “No, no way” and patiently waits until we might give a different answer.

Continued in next column...

Today Jesus en-courages us to be patient and compassionate: With our-

selves as we strive to move out of behaviors that have perplexed us for a long time. God does and will set us free; we need to be accepting of small steps that eventually bring large changes.

With our family members as they, like us, wrestle with the challeng-es of 2020. The Holy Spirit is ready to give us extra doses of pa-tience, humor and creativity to make the most of these days.

With our leaders, as they, just like each one of us, are responding day to day to many new challenges.

With Jesus to guide us we can work together for the good of all.

Value Them Both Amendment The 2020 Primary Election & the “Value Them Both” Amendment Voting began Wednesday for many primary elections in Kansas. As Catholics, we are called not simply to vote, but to be well informed voters who in casting our ballots apply the moral principles and priorities of our Faith. The Catholic Church does not tell its members how to vote. At the same time, it is the responsi-bility of the Church to help form the consciences of her members to understand the principles and priorities that should guide their decisions as vot-ers. The Catholic Bishops have once again identi-fied the protection of the unborn as the pre-eminent moral priority. Archbishop Naumann states, “The Value Them Both Constitutional Amendment needs to be adopted by the citizens of Kansas. We need elected officials who will take action to defend the innocent life of the unborn and their mothers.” To see Archbishop’s full state-ment on the moral responsibility of voting and to learn more about the “Value Them Both” Amend-ment, please visit www.archkck.org/prolife. The USCCB’s Forming Consciences for Faithful Citi-zenship can be found at: http://www.usccb.org/issues-andaction/faithful-citizenship/index.cfm.
