Growing as a Prophetic Singer Chapter 7 Reflection

In chapter 7 of Growing as a Prophetic Singer, Anna Blanc addresses fear, under the apt title

of “Facing Fear ”. She talks of the different ways fears can encounter you and what you can do to

combat it. One of the greatest challenges not just in singing, but with any type of performance

art, fear is something that all musicians share.

Fear is something that one will never be truly rid of, Blanc writes, and is a tactic the enemy is

more than happy to use in order to prevent us from fulfilling our calling. We must not allow it to

gain a foothold in our lives, however, but overcome the gripping power of fear with intercession.

Fear is not a gift of the Lord, it is from the enemy. Sometimes, if you have a sudden feeling of

intense fear, you may have evil spirits working against you. The good news is that we have

authority over all darkness in the name of Jesus. Prayer can be a powerful tool in overcoming

fear, and help us step out with boldness to our calling. The name of Jesus is more powerful than

any other, and no matter how strong we may feel, we can rely on His power. Our confidence

rests on God, and we are responsible to help enforce the fruits of His victory in our lives.

Fear can also come from a preoccupation on what man thinks of us. Instead of setting our

eyes on God and serving Him, we give power to the opinions of other people and try to please

them. Whether struggling with fear or pride, we must remember that worship is for glorifying

God, not ourselves.

As someone who has struggled immensely with fear for years, this chapter really spoke to me.

Without a doubt, fear of failure has been the number one roadblock in my musical journey. I

agree with what the author says, and that earnest prayer can and will intercede on your behalf. I

can’t remember a single time when I was afraid and God didn’t show up after prayer. While I

haven’t overcome the problem, and probably never will, I know I can rely on the power of God

to send breakthrough.
