SummaryAt the european level it is recognised that the formal education system, alone, cannot do enough for the students and non-formal activities are recommended in order to fill the gap.

Education does not stop with school - non-formal preparation happens in companies, in associations, outside the formal system and demand the motivated involvement of each participant.

Education is everywhere! If the parliament issues each autumn a new law of education, if the teachers do or do not earn a salary, if the students are motivated or not, if what you learn in school grants you a workplace or not, even if it’s not Romania’s priority right now, education is the highlight of what builds the Romania of tomorrow.

The School of Values assocition and AIESECRomania provide students with the possibility of developing personal awareness, trust in themselves and control over life choices - vital caracteristics in today’s society which can be earned only through non-formal education.

Since the begining, GROW has provided nonformal education experiences to:

3,700 high school students,

170 international trainers,

270 volunteers,

16 cities.

About GROWGROW represents a long term, non-formal educational engagement designed to improve the quality of education in Romania. It is a program organized in partnership Scoala de Valori - AIESEC that addresses high school students in Romania (age 14-18). Through the GROW program, they can follow a complementary four-year educational cycle.

The program offers high school students a professionally designed educational curriculum that complements the formal education system. It has been developed with the support of an Educational Board, gathering personalities and top-notch experts in education and adolescent psychology, especially to address key needs of the development of teenage participants.

GROW in 2011 took place during three different editions (GROW 0.9, GROW 1.1 - 1.2 and GROW1.0) in fifteen AIESEC cities across Romania. The project involved 163 high schools and students from 21 cities across Romania: Arad, Bucureşti, Braşov, Cluj, Constanţa, Craiova, Galaţi, Iaşi, Oradea, Ploieşti, Piteşti, Sibiu, Suceava, Târgu-Mureş, Timişoara Râmnicu-Vâlcea, Lugoj, Curtea de Argeş, Campulung-Moldovenesc, Balş, Turda, Dorohoi.

The courses included trainings like presentation skills, public speaking, personal awareness, personal effectiveness, project management skills, Romanian values.

The main goal of this program is to build a constructive attitude for a sustainable change among teenagers in Romania. GROW aims to be the number-one national education program addressing high school students as it is unique among any other program:

• it is a long term program (2010-2015)• it has the magnitude of a nationwide project • it has a specific approach for each high school level: 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders.• the courses are delivered in English by international trainers• the courses were designed professionally by consultancy and adolescent psychology specialists

Train the Trainers is the preparation conference for GROW trainers, where local project managers and international trainees, together with the School of Values and AIESEC members, discuss the curriculum, how the trainings align to the delivery standards of the project, and ways to implement the project.

Train the Trainers is also a motivational conference because of the presence of a large number of international people, combined with the idea of being a part of a movement and thus leads to the creation and deepening of common directions and values, shared by all the people involved in the GROW project.

The international trainers involved in the project came from 42 countries: Bulgaria, Brasil, Russia, Poland, India, Greece, Malaesia, Portugal, Slovakia, Austria, Georgia, Estonia, Australia, Serbia, Rwanda, France, Lithuania, Venezuela, Cameroon, Tunis, Moldavian Republic, Nigeria , Cambodgia, Taiwan, Japan, Ukraine, Germany, USA, Pakistan, China, UK, Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Hong Kong, Mexic, Ireland, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Portugal and Denmark.

Train the Coordinators is the preparation conference for local project managers. There, the project’s vision is discussed and shared. Besides this, everybody has the chance of creating action plans, brainstorming and aligning the strategies. Finally, all the projects’ details are defined for a smooth implementation.

Also, each of the local project managers who have already implemented the project, during the conference, get to know each other better and share their experiences with the local project managers of the future GROW edition. They can also meet all the international trainers present at this conference.

TTT and TTC conferences took place 3 times in Predeal during the following intervals: 28th february and 4th of March 2011 (70 participants), 27th june and 1st of july 2011 (over 100 participants), 31st of october and 4th of november 2011 (over 70 participants).

“GROW is a great program that will help teenagers develop themselves and find their way. I think teenagers represent a country`s future. Both teenagers and trainers benefit a lot from GROW. GROW is a brilliant future.” (Xi Chen, China, GROW trainer)

“I remember myself being a teenager and going to Germany for the first time. This experience made me think who I am, what are my strong points and my values. Now it is the time to show this experience with other people. I joined Grow to give the Romanian teenagers an international exposure and help them find out who they are and might be in the future.” (Marta Jarzabek, Poland, trainer Grow 1.2)

As a long term objective of the GROW program, we aim to make an impact on 11,300 (100%) participants by 2015, increasing the number of participants each year.

1,025 (9%) high school students participated in our sessions before 2011 (in 2010) and 2,696 (24%%) in 2011. As a result, we still have 67% of our objective to reach in order to achieve our target of 11.300 of participants by 2015.

“For me, the GROW project was one of the most amazing summer experiences I have ever had. I never thought you can make so many amazing friends while learning such useful things that are never explained in school. It also gave me the opportunity to practice my English speaking skills. I would never hesitate participating in another GROW-like project.” (Paul Solomon, high school student)

“GROW has been for me a window that opened and expanded my horizons, helped me discover new things about myself and how things work in society. GROW successfully combined learning with fun and I think that was the thing I liked the most about it. It was a great project and I wish it never ended. I would participate over and over again.” (Csernich Florin, high school student)

”I consider that the GROW project promotes basis values in building healthy communities. It teaches teenagers to communicate in a more relaxing way, creating an environment in which trust, mutual respect, friendship are respected. After participating at a GROW project, teenagers manage to know themselves better and appreciate their beings more, they are also more opened in relating to others, no matter the culture they come from, they are more daring. GROW is an opportunity of personal development no teenager should miss.” (Dana Ungur, Headmaster at Waldorf Highschool, Timisoara)

”In my opinion, teachers should encourage their students to participate in extraactivties or to do volunteering. I have always supported educational projects that really have to offer something to the kids, and GROW is what teenagers nowadays need. I am really glad GROW ”visited” our school too, because even if we are not in the top of the highschools, our students were very enthusiastic to participate in the project and I was a little afraid they might not be accepted, which was a bit foolish, because this program is DIFFERENT. And it offers something valuable to the students, something they can later ( because it is hard to be aware of it at this age, a few do ) use and also develop. I think if school does not do it, GROW does it.” (Vionelia Ștefu, Informatics teacher at Henri Coandă Highschool, Timisoara)

Outside class activitiesThese are outdoor activities, besides the trainings (movies with debriefing, educational games, learning and discussion circles), designed to strengthen both links between pupils and connections between trainers and participants and also to deepen the impact curriculum, all of these being based on unconventional education.

Extracurricular activities organized in 2011 during the GROW program were: learning circles, movie sessions, team-buildings, company visits, cooking events, establishment visits, free hug events, flash mobs, charity activities, international picnics, discussions and meetings with successful people (athletes, entrepreneurs, teachers and artists).

World Wide WeekendWorld Wide Weekend (August 6th-7th, 2011) was an entire weekend where GROW participants from all over the country were a part of an international cultural fair.

They had the opportunity to mix internationalism, cultural sensitivity, creativity and team work while having fun and practicing some of the skills gained during the project.

The participants, along with the international trainers, presented their assigned culture in many creative ways. The fair was open to many visitors, parents and students that had the opportunity to “taste” this international experience.

World Wide Weekend took place the same weekend in 11 Romanian cities: Arad, Bucuresti, Brasov, Cluj, Constanta, Iasi, Oradea, Pitesti, Sibiu, Targu-Mures, Timisoara and involved around 550 high school students and over 7,000 visitors.

Impact analysis

This report was commissioned to analyse the feedback written by the teenagers who have taken part in the GROW 0.9 2011 Spring edition.

The method of analysis includes online feedback given by the participants from all over Romania. The research draws attention to the fact that approximately 90% of the participants found the program very useful for their educational needs and applicable in their daily life.

The main goal of this report is to show the impact of GROW on its participants. Results of data analysed show that there is a positive change in the students’ answers before and after the project, especially in the areas of self esteem, sense of direction and the idea of having information at their fingertips.

In the next pages you will find excerpts from each evaluation report of the three GROW editions in 2011.

The GROW program is the best way for the participants, despite their young age, to be prepared both for their future challenges at work and in their everyday life at school and university.

Data for the analysis come from First and Final Evaluation Form, which the participants were required to fill out online at the beginning and at the end of the project. For this report, only the participants’ responses who have filled out both First and Final Impact Evaluation Form were used. This way, it is possible to observe how or if the answers have changed due to the project.

Both of the Forms contained the same questions divided into 5 groups. Each of the groups investigates another area of participants’ personal development (so called the five pillars of the “Internal Structure”): self esteem, sense of direction, self awareness, exposure to the role model, and information at the finger tip.

In both Evaluation Forms, there were three types of collecting data: an open question (exposure to the role model), a polar question (sense of direction), and statements (self esteem, self awareness, and information at the finger tip). For each statement, there were five options of the answer (always, usually, sometimes, rarely, and never), from which the participants had to choose the one which the best describes them.

Our questionnaire was applied on 533 participants, approximately 31% of the total number participants. The cities from where we took teenagers answers were: Arad, Brasov, Bucuresti, Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Lugoj, Oradea, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Ramnicu-Valcea, Sibiu, Suceava, Targu-Mures and Timisoara.

GROW 1.1 GENERAL IMPACT

1. I have already begun to plan my career.

First, after Grow 1.1, 75% of the participants have already begun to plan their careers. GROW 1.1 increase their number by nearly 25%.

Second, Grow 1.1 has a motivational effect on the students. It is to see especially in the topic where by around 20% has increased the number of students who believe that they can always handle anything.

Third, it is significant that Grow 1.1 participants’ awareness about themselves has increased during the program.

The number of the participants who always know what they are good at and what is difficult for them has increased with 24% - this is one of the main goals of GROW 1.0. The number of those who knew rarely or sometimes decreased by 12%.

The teenagers are more informed. After GROW 1.0, the teenagers are more capable of becoming independent learners. They are more capable to find the information they need by themselves, they have the tools to stay informed about the topics they are interested in and they are more opened towards sharing the information they have with other people (~25%).

Grow 1.1 improves the participants’ sense of direction. They are more aware about their future plans. Moreover, they start to be creators of their own future. It is particularly shown in the topic “I have already begun my career”

The goal of the four-year GROW program is to develop a new generation of Romanian teenagers who will have skills and courage to make a change.

According to the feedback, teenagers are very interested in learning practical skills which are in the centre of the sessions’ activities. They learn how to express their own ideas, find arguments to defend them in front of the others, respect the other people’s ideas, know how to give feedback etc.
