Group Assignment

INTRODUCTION

The desert view primary was school built in 2005 for approximately 200-250 local students

running classes from class1 to class 6. After a state government funding, it has allowed to

school to provide notebooks to all year 5 & year 6 students for assignments and accessing

internet.

The school infrastructure is such that it has two wings east and west wing with majority

classes on east wing and couple classes and offices, library on the west wing.

ICT REQUIREMENTS

The school has 10 teaching staff, 3 administrative staff and a cleaner. The 10 teaching staff is

to be provided with desktop support each in office. Other requirements are desktop support

and an online printer for all class rooms. The year 5and year 6 students having notebooks are

also to be having support, web server support and web content management.

They have 10 staff members so they will be having 10 desktops on their desk but sharing

same internet connection coming through same routers. The east wing will be having classes

from prep to class 4 which means total 5 classrooms having a desktop each and a connection

to online printer. The west wing which will be having 2 classrooms, for students year5 &year

6, the principal’s office ,library, staff office and a reception room.

Above floor plan shows that Desert primary school has two wings and one admin building

with principal office, two assistant principal offices, reception and admin staff that use for

education purpose and for teaching staff. The east wing has 5 classrooms with three

additional classrooms for future use and enrolment for children. On the other hand this

building has west wing including year five and six, two additional room for students. Close to

west wing it has also one library and resources room for students.

As the west wing has administrative office it will be having a web server, an application

server, a database server. These can work on a single server or can be connected to more if

the load on these servers increases and the requirements of the school increases.

A firewall has to be implemented at the appropriate position in the network for the security

and restriction to pornography and other illicit web content. Lite speed will be used as web

server to host the web pages and serve the requests being made to server. But as the school

has 2 wings namely east and west wing both will be having some distance between them so

they will be need switches, routers, server, Vlans. It would be shown on a network model

with all the devices and intranet model & all devices or applications use.

Based on the school requirements LAN is to be setup in each wing in which class desktops

are to be connected in east wing and west wing which consists of the staff computers, and

connected printer. These two LAN’s in turn has to be connected with each other for the

effective communications and for printing commands.

The TCP/IP Network Model is based on a four-layer reference model. All protocols that

belong to the TCP/IP protocol suite, such as TCP, UDP, HTTP, FTP, etc., are located in the

top three layers of this model.

TCP/IP is a layered set of protocols. TCP/IP applications use 4 layers:

an application protocol such as mail

a protocol such as TCP that provides services need by many applications

IP, which provides the basic service of getting datagrams to their destination

The protocols needed to manage a specific physical medium, such as Ethernet or a

point to point line.

TCP/IP is a group of many separate individual protocols that work together and is often

called the TCP/IP protocol suite. These protocols handle many different tasks, most of which

run in the background and don't require any custom configuration from the average computer

user.

Network Layer:

In this proposal the network layer is providing a remote delivery between client and server.

This layer is also known as Internet layer. The main purpose of this layer is to organize or

handle the movement of data on network. By movement of data, it means routing of data over

the network. The main protocol used at this layer is IP.

Some specific features of network layer are:

Routing: The movement of the data across a series of interconnected networks. It is the job

of the devices and software routines that function at the network layer to handle incoming

packets from various sources, determine their final destination, and then find out where they

need to be sent.

Datagram Encapsulation: The network layer normally encapsulates messages received

from higher layers by placing them into datagrams or packets with a network layer header.

Data Link Layer:

This layer is also known as network interface layer. This layer normally consists of device

drivers in the OS and the network interface card attached to the system.

The main task of data link layer is:

Transfer data from network layer of one machine to network layer of other machine.

Convert raw bit stream of physical layer into group of bits.

List of devices used in all layers:

Physical layer = Windows, operating system, server.

Data Link Layer = Switches.

Network Layer = Router.

A security firewall and an Intrusion Detection System “Snort” has been implemented on the

main computer for the secure login and to find the unauthorized persons logging into the

network or trying to do unauthorized things with the school data .

The internet come through the main server in principal office providing network connection

to PC,Netbooks,ipad and other devices. The main server connects to the LAN network which

gives the internet through network provider.

In this admin building we have one principal office with connecting two assistant principal

offices and close to principal office they have one reception counter which connected with

the wired printer and desktop. All office has one desktop computer and one staff room has

four desktop computers available for teaching staff and admin staff. We connect the network

using different types of switches [switch 1=8 port] and one router is connected with main

server which is working as a Web server, Mail server etc. And switch number 1 is connecting

with this router to transfer the information.

Just closest with the admin building they have the library and resources room for students

that they can get printout from the wireless printer and in this room we connect the ten

desktop with Switch =2 and this switch connect to the wireless router which is connected

with the main server and this router is came with latest technology and high speed standard so

it gives very high value.

The school has east wing and they have five classrooms with Pre to Year 4 students and each

class has 20 students. For those students we give each of them desktop for study and Pre to

year 3 has one ipad for education purpose and year 3 and 4 has one netbook to access the

internet. We use the Switch no 3 and 4 port no 48+48 and Switch no 5 one 16 port switch

which is connect to the two additional classrooms for enrolment purpose and each classroom

have four desktop. And the entire desktop also connects with wireless router.

The west wing has class for Year 5 and Year 6 with two additional classrooms. Now they has

Switch no 6 ,port no 48 and Switch no 7 ,port no 16 for connecting to the internet and pass

the application to the web server.

All the Switches connected with router and wireless router and this router connected with the

main server which is in principal office in admin building.

Description of Equipment’s

1. Switches: A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers

together within one local area network (LAN). Technically, network switches operate at

layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model. The use of switches in computer networks

is usually takes place in the in one or more layers of the Open Systems Interconnections

protocol which include physical layer, data link layer, network layer or the transport

layer. The role of switches in networks which are commercial networks is in the form of

built-in or modular interfaces which make it feasible to attach various kinds of networks,

such as Ethernet or Fiber Channel. Switches in networks are also used for interconnecting

different networks at third layer of OSI model with the help of routers.

Cost:

Catalyst 2960C Switch 8 FE, 2 x Dual Uplink, Lan price 300 Australian dollar

for each. So switch 8+8+8 = 900 dollar

For 16 ports switch price Australian 800 dollar each. So switch 16+16= 1600$

For switch with port 48 price 4000 Australian dollar each. So switch

48+48=8000$

2. Router: It is the physical device that joins multiple wired or wireless networks together.

Technically, a wired or wireless router is a Layer 3 gateway, meaning that the

wired/wireless router connects networks, and that the router operates at the network layer

of the OSI model.

The router ensures that information doesn't go where it's not needed. This is crucial

for keeping large volumes of data from clogging the network.

The router makes sure that information does make it to the intended destination.

3. Wireless Router: A wireless router is a device in a wireless local area network WLAN

that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its

destination. A wireless router works in the same way as the router in a hard-wired home

or business local area network LAN, but allows greater mobility for notebook or portable

computers.

Over here this wireless router would be placed in west wing of the school for the web access

of year 5 and year 6 students having notebooks. A security firewall and an Intrusion

4. Wired printer: we set up with one wired printer in admin building to provide print

services for admin staff and teaching staff with latest technology with high speed and for

each printer they cost about 340 dollar.

6. Netbook:

For two netbook connection we need fastest and current features technology that student

can use for educational purpose so we have 100 dollar price for each netbook.

7. I Pad:

Due to ICT requirements they wants the three ipad for some classes so each ipad cost 400

dollar so the total cost is 1200 dollar.

8. Wireless Ethernet. In some existing schools it may not be possible to install a complete

cabling installation. These may include a listed building, an existing larger school with

limited distribution zones or existing remote blocks. In these cases wireless Ethernet may

be considered as a component of an overall structured cabling infrastructure.

9. Services Infrastructure: This section details the mechanical and electrical services

associated within principal office and maintenance of central file server also maintain

through this office.

10. Data Communications Centre (DCC) : A local electrical sub distribution board shall be

provided in the DCC. The design capacity will need to be established on a single-phase

electrical supply shall be provided.

A dedicated earth from the main earth bar at the main LV switchboard shall be provided to

the DCC to serve each of the data cabinets. The design capacity will need to be established on

plan.

11. Sockets: Sockets shall be of a single piece rugged construction. Modular socket

assemblies will not be accepted. The supplier shall provide samples of sockets for

approval.

12. Warranty: A ten year warranty is required on the fibre optic cable installation and all

other associated fibre optic components. A link performance certificate for horizontal

cabling is required, specifying that all such cables meet or exceed the requirements of

ISO11801 Annex A. A proprietary testing devise shall be used to test the installation as

recommended by the cabling manufacturers and approved by the Building Services

Consulting Engineer.

13. Horizontal Cables All cabling, connections and accessories in the structured cabling

system shall conform fully to standardise. Cable shall be of a low smoke type and shall

conform to building standards for plenum cables.
